Out of Character Chat

This thread is for chat related to the game, but not in character.

This is what a post looks like that's fully out-of-character. This is a question about the game at large or the current situation, or any question or comment not tied to some words or actions that your character is making.

We're assuming that everything in this thread is out of character, so there's no need to utilize the OOC mark-up tag, unless you just want to.

Xowin reaches into his belt and pulls out a small smooth black stone. He throws the stone onto the ground at his feet and a plume of smoke erupts, engulfing and hiding him from sight. When the smoke clears, he's nowhere to be seen.
OOC:
Xowin is using his special item that he received in the last quest that provide him with a smoke screen and single-use invisibility.

And this is how you would use the OOC tag in the main game thread to describe something out-of-character, but related to the character's action.

A little about formatting. It's customary on this site to "quote and bold any in character speech" and to italicize anything your character thinks to him/herself.

We certainly don't have to do anything like that, or we can come up with our own system. But, I think it does help when scanning back through older posts.

Just a thought.

Can we also institute a rule that says that if one character suggests that the group do something, say "pitch camp" that doesn't hurt or endanger any particular person and no one contradicts it or says they will do something different, then after a certain time it just happens?

I don't want to codify it with a number, but that's sort of how things will go, yes. That is keeping in mind that I'm only expecting a commitment of 3-5 posts per week. So, I'm going to wait to give everyone a chance, say, over a full workday and evening before I progress without their input.

It's a difficult transition, as the tempo of play-by-post is much slower than that of in-person play.

I'm expecting this to be more character development and roleplay, and less action.

That's actually a paladin proficiency. :)

So, as a general rule, the way rolls should work is this: you tell me what you want to do, I tell you if and what you need to roll. This is especially true with PC interactions. I'm not going to force a certain player to roleplay their character a certain way based on a dice roll. In this case, each player can decide how much they want to share, if any.

And, with NPC interactions as well; I'll call for roles as I need them.

Mostly, if y'all are rolling contests against each other, something has gone terribly wrong.

OOC:
Beside the fact that the main one is a human with pointy ears (that's what i take "man" to mean), can i tell anything about the four figures yet? Do I know the language? Is this a levitation spell? (if it is: "A creature must be willing to be levitated, and an object must be unattended or possessed by a willing creature." I would need to do a constitution save against levitation.)
I'll generally use "man" to mean "male of a sentient race" (and "woman" similarly). I'll use the word "human" to specify race/species.

It is a levitation spell, but you didn't get to resist because you were paralyzed from the Hold Person spell. For the purpose of this spell, it makes you an object, not an unwilling creature.

You'd have to tell me if you think Rhiv would recognize elvish. If you want to know more about the figures, you'll have to roll a perception.

Chris, I don't think you speak dwarvish. I just looked, and I can't see anything in the Half-Orc or Druid sections that would indicate an opportunity to pick up dwarvish.

The fact that orcish and dwarvish use the same script means that the letters don't look entirely foreign to you, but you don't get the meaning of any of these particular arrangements of letters.

Think of what it is like to read spanish (assuming you don't speak spanish). You know what the letters sound like, more or less, but just because you know vaguely how to pronounce a word doesn't help you understand what you are saying. Make sense?

Josh is really concerned with consistency of dialogue presentation, and possible misuse of the "quotation" button. So, for standardization purposes, let's use the quote button for referencing other people's posts. For character dialogue, just bold it in the text box.

Chris, there's only one box on the character sheet on GP labeled Total HP. To'ot's currently says 17, but that's probably from level 2. Your current level 4 hp max should be 31. (Also, be sure to update anything else that's changed as you gained levels.)

I recommend keeping track of your hp as it changes in another box on your sheet, maybe just Notes. For you, it'll be different because of the way hp works for druids as they use Wild Shape, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.
