Down in the Depths

May 4, 2022 6:44 pm
It has been a couple of days since your recovery of Krinn, but he has been somewhat silent at this point. Kevin has interacted with the docent, getting some information about the project that he has managed for the Cul'sir Dominion many aeons ago. Krinn didn't understand at the time, but he now realizes how far in the future he (and you all) really are compared to when he was commissioned to his task.

You all have attempted to investigate some of the tunnels, but realize that the tunnels are different than even Krinn's maps indicate. But he says to Kevin, "Something is coming. The giants had me monitoring the shifting of the moons, the times when our planet became coterminous with other planes, and they devised these caverns as a means of containing and funneling threats, and also as a means of traveling to those planes."

He shows you an astral map, showing Eberron in the center, the Ring of Siberys, and the whole planet orbited by 12 moons ,each labeled with the moon's name (and in parentheses indicating the plane and domain associated with the moon), and a 13th black space with a label that says "Crya (Dal Quor)".

"If you are up on your ancient history, the giants and the denizens of Dal Quor got into a major war, which ended in the Cul'sir Dominion destroying Dal Quor's access to our plane. They did that through access to these planar tunnels and caverns.

"Now watch this:"
The cycling of the moons seems to fast-forward to the current date, and he says, "There is an unprecedented event that will occur, which hasn't occurred in about 35 million years: we will have a multi-planar convergence. Each of the moons of Eberron will affect our station here in Stormreach all simultaneously.

"We will need your help to manage and mitigate the disaster that would ensue if that were to occur. Also, we do not know how Dal Quor might be affected by this convergence. Will the destroyed bridges to that plane be fixed? Will denizens from other planes conspire with those Quori spirits to infiltrate this world? I just don't know what the implications are. I know that Xoriatites are meddlesome beings, but who knows if Thelanisians are equally meddlesome. Do you get my meaning? This is a strange time for us to deal with, and we have many places to visit if we are to mitigate the chaos.

"Will you help me?"
May 4, 2022 8:17 pm
"This sounds disastrous," the decay druid grumbled, "and far beyond our capabilities alone. We should seek help from amenable powers in Stormreach. Perhaps such powers can provide resources we lack for both exploration and combat."
May 4, 2022 11:28 pm
Mrak pulled his lip thoughtfully for a moment. "How much time have we got?"
May 4, 2022 11:59 pm
Gunnar's eyes open very wide. He speaks as close to a whisper as he ever gets (which isn't very).

"What a legacy we could build under such dangerous times! The legacy of the Mror Howlers could be secured for all time."

As Mrak hears Kevin's retelling of Krinn's words, Mrak touches the ball in Kevin's hand and he sees the docent consciousness and the same things that Kevin is seeing: the labeled moons, the planet Eberron with its surrounding Ring of Siberys.

He asks the above question, and the consciousness says, "Based on my estimations, it will happen in about 2 months' time.

"There may be a way to circumvent this convergence. There are ancient notes and tomes in the catacombs, one particular esotericist by the name of Gryndl'sir, he was a brother of one of the giant emperors, and he studied these comings and goings of manifest zones and such. Perhaps he wrote something that could tell us how to mitigate the effects of the convergence."
May 5, 2022 12:28 am
"Who are we to say that his convergence is a bad thing? All we really know is that is it different and that there will likely be change. Change is a good thing! The world can be so boring sometimes. This would surly spice it up." Alin raises and eyebrow and scans the other for reaction. "I think good Gunnar and I are on the same page, this event may be a way to build something new."
May 6, 2022 7:53 pm
Setting yourself on fire is also a change from the boring life.
There is a potential for something really bad, but we find Gryndl'sir notes down below, they could make a more informed decision whether or not we should work against or with this change.

Grab what you need for an underground treck and lets get down there.

The question is how long do we want to stay underground at a time? Having a city above our heads will make it convenient to come up for air and supplies."
May 7, 2022 11:22 pm
"I wouldn't count on taking a trip to the store too often. If there will be more portals, I foresee the danger of somehow ending up in one of the less hospitable planes. Even if we don't get sucked down a dimensional hole, we've already seen one thing that can come through them to our world, and slaadi are only one of many such horrors."

Awesome everyone! From your adventure in recovering Raelyn, you all received 2,500 gp for your services (500 gp each).

You all can purchase equipment at listed prices in the PHB, and your standard healing potion (the 2d4+2 healing kind) costs 50 gp each.

If you are interested in magic items to purchase from a magewright or artificer, perhaps we can discuss what you would like in the OOC chat forum, and I will tell you what the timeframe is needed to produce such an item, if it is at all possible.

Go ahead and purchase what you want, adding it to DNDBeyond, and then confirm that you are ready to go, and Krinn will lead you to the first floor of the dungeons under Stormreach.

Lets go then. Kevin takes a few steps and his battle cat raises with the smooth sound of polished metal against metal. In the door he looks back to see if there is any objections.

"I feel as ready as I will ever be, have you consulted our spherical friend on the destination?" Alin thinks for a moment "Can you do some of your fancy tinkering to make its map visible to us all or to allow it to communicate to the group?"

After some time taken, Kevin fashions a pairing between his metal companion and Krinn, where a speaker and a small 3-dimensional projector are controlled by Krinn, but higher functions of Kevin’s cat are still controlled by the cat itself.

The projections that Kevin witnessed are now viewable by the whole group, and Krinn’s "voice" can be heard by the group with the speakers.

"Alright, our point of entry is found here:" and a map of Stormreach’s surface appears, and a red waypoint is added to the map, and a little image of the ball floats over that waypoint marker (it is in the Marketplace district).

"The first level of the place is a junction for the many caverns of this place.

"The first place we could head to is a small library in the first floor, and maybe we can find some of the writings of Grendl’sir."
May 18, 2022 1:02 pm
"Then let us not waste any time, and be away to this library." Mrak takes the lead to the Marketplace district.
May 18, 2022 4:24 pm
"Yup. Before I get any older," the druid grumbled but had a smirk on his face. "I came to Xen'drik hoping to find rare plants and fungi. There should be wonderful specimens down there."
May 18, 2022 10:30 pm
Gunnar doesn't complain. Gunnar has a love of stories, but books? He prefers the stories told the old fashioned way, around a campfire by a seasoned orator. But this wasn't an excursion for pleasure reading. Many a power-hungry being in search of dark secrets and lore were attracted to libraries, and it would grow his reputation to add a wizard or three to the notches on Fuldmåne.

He hops to his feet, ready to strike out into the underground.

Alin brushes some unseen dirt from their tunic and follows Mrak in silence. As Alin walks, they toy with the ornamental dagger that never leaves the sheath at their hip.
May 19, 2022 6:05 pm
Everyone prepares and heads out to the Marketplace, and you identify a secret tunnel entrance in an alleyway, and you manage to discretely open it, enter it, and close it behind you. The tunnel is dark, but you see it is about 15 feet high and wide. You walk along the path for a time, and over time the path narrows down to about 10 feet by 10 feet. Eventually you see the low-light din of everbright lanterns along the walls.

Kevin, the second in the marching order, followed by battlecat, agrees with assessing of the continual flame spells. They are very common

He studies the map to find the best route to the library. He questions Krinn about different markings on the map and is perhaps more engaged in that conversation than in the current tunnels there are in.

You walk 80 feet down a corridor, take a right, and after your first step, Mrak becomes motionless and suspended as if in mid-air, and he cannot breathe.

The person immediately behind him realizes what has happened to Mrak: he steps into, and is engulfed by, a gelatinous cube!
OOC:
Combat starts. Players have first action, first-come, first-served, and then the ooze will act.

Mrak, since you are engulfed, an option for you would be to use your action to roll a Strength check to see if you can escape the cube unassisted. I am open to creative solutions, also.

Jun 7, 2022 11:19 pm
"I would suppose they are not actually cube shaped in natural caves, there would be little point in that. I could be wrong about cleaning though, it could be guarding the tunnel, sliding back and forth endlessly. That seems rather dull." Alin ponders "Krinn, must we go down this particular tunnel?"

Kevin grunts an affirmative as Alin querries Krinn

Perhaps I can move the cube behind us with the same trik I used on Mrak
Jun 14, 2022 5:39 pm
You all step aside as the cube comes slowly through your direction, and then continues on its path southward, opening the northern pass that it previously occupied.

https://i.imgur.com/QbUKwlm.jpg

After some exploration in these halls, you find an empty closet, one unassuming dead end to the west, and one dead end to the east with a strange divot that looks to be the size of Krinn. There is also a path northward that seems to continue on into the dungeon.

"Kevin, can you place me into that groove? I haven't seen this section of this floor before. I want to know what's going on here."

Once it is placed in that groove, you see the various gems encrusted into the docent glow in a strange interval, and then those gems pulse with light all at once, and then the lights stop pulsing.

Kevin gets the sense that the integration is done, and he removes Krinn and places him back onto his iron companion, and Krinn says,

"We should head northward. The northern part of this floor has the first library that we should investigate.

"Be careful, though. According to the interface, there are monsters roaming the halls."

The thorn whip goes into the swirling metal-looking liquid, then seems to reflect off the surface of the swirling metal, but seems to enter at the point of reflection, simultaneously (it is a weird behavior, to be sure). Ghillie surmises that this is some kind of portal, but requires some kind of key in order to pass through to the other side of the portal.

Alin analyzes the double doors, they determine that there are no traps, and the locking mechanism is easily undone by the rogue. He opens the double-doors to find a strange, very large room and a giant-sized statue, with its head missing. There is a broken statue head lying on the floor nearby.

Not without crouching here.

Based on what Gunnar can surmise (being from the Mror Holds and understanding tunnels and digging), these tunnels would not be able to accommodate a giant with their crawling in most of the areas.

It seems like these were built for smaller creatures, like their drow slaves and what-not.

Cull Seer
Grass grows from the stone-hewn ground, reaching up to grasp the ettin, but he is strong and able to escape its hold.

The psychic blade lands on the giant-kin, while Kevin and his battlecat assault the large, gross monster. Kevin lands a mean stab into the side, just under the ribs of the ettin, and some nasty-smelling, thick, dark blood starts to pour out of the wound.

Gunnar shakes his head, and gains control of his person again.

The monster's left head lifts up, while the right head looks away from the foes. The left head then opens its mouth and points it in the direction of Kevin, Gunnar, and his steel defender.

Thankfully, the assault from all of the allies pounds into the creature, and it falls, defecating on itself as it takes its final breath.

Inspecting Cull Seer's remains carefully, you come across a strange pouch, with copper wires connecting into the creature's chest.

With a whispered word, ten bright red berries grew on his moss armour.

"Take three each. I'll keep one for myself. They're nutritious and each can heal just enough to stave off death from you or someone you feed one to."

Ghillie walked to Kevin and offered, "I can heal you a bit more if need be, son, but I'm told you shifters have uncanny healing abilities."

You all walk past the ettin, down 10 feet of steps into a conjunction of several passageways.

To the west, you step up 10 feet of stairs, and you see a bunch of niches, and upon inspection of the first few niches, you see an oval mirror at the end of at least the first couple niches (I am not going to progress down that hall more unless you indicate you would like to).

To the north, you step up 10 feet of stairs, and you see a hallway end 50 feet into a T-intersection, and you see a 20-foot hallway that opens eastward, ending in a closed door.

To the east, there are 10 feet of steps that are 20-feet wide, and you see a couple of large murals on the walls.

"Be thankful they did, Alin. Some part of it was alive... and I'm glad that part is dead," Ghillie said. "A mist-making ring, eh? Seems like you'd create the mist around you then run like hell from whatever's trying to kill you."

"Alin deserves the credit. They sliced the giant statue's mind apart. A feat worthy of even a dwarven blade."
Jul 26, 2022 7:07 am
"Gives new meaning to 'sharp witted' eh Alin?" He slaps Alin on the back in a congratulatory manner.
Jul 27, 2022 2:32 am
Alin takes the slap on the back with a exaggerated wince, more as a reaction to the pun than from the rough dwarven hand. If I ever meet my children, I will tell them tales of how this ring was won.
Jul 27, 2022 3:36 pm
"Oh, you're a parent, Alin?" Gunnar says with a bit of surprise. Gunnar wasn't young anymore by Dwarven standards, and after the war ended his mother had been pestering him about starting a family. That was half the reason he was on Xen'drik.
Jul 28, 2022 1:28 pm
"Yes….a mother and a father." Alin smiles whistfully "The little ankle biters are being raised in a community away from human society, where they can wear their own skin and not be persecuted. Shall we move on?"
Jul 29, 2022 6:50 pm
Could we move on please?
Jul 29, 2022 7:08 pm
"It's good that your young can grow without having the norms of others forced upon them, Alin. That may happen later but the young should be free," Ghillie said with a smile. "But now... Let's continue to search this place and see what else fails to kill us."
Jul 31, 2022 12:55 am
Gunnar is also intrigued by Alin's story, but acquiesces to Kevin's eagerness. "Lead the way, battle smith!"
Aug 1, 2022 3:34 pm
HeroAmongMen says:
You all squeeze through the tight space, and it leads you down the path. The path turns southward, and the path slants downward, deeper.

You walk into a dark room with a slanted floor, the eastern side being roughly 6 feet higher than the western side, with a nasty, gray sludge (which makes the floor difficult terrain). Towards the western side of the room, there is a huge gray statue of some kind of giant, which animates when you all enter the room.
https://i.imgur.com/pdbKV1r.png

Before you leave this room, Kevin realizes that the sludge must escape from this room somehow, or else it would fill this room (since, for some it doesn't accumulate more, even though it continuously flows).

He inspects a little bit, and finds a grate that descends, with a ladder fixed in-place.
OOC:
There are two paths to descend: one back where you came from, to the north, and another down the grate, to the south.

Which direction should you all go? Multi Public

Aug 3, 2022 8:59 am
OOC:
South we go
Aug 9, 2022 6:22 pm
You all begin descending, the sludge is slippery, but taking care, you are able to descend the ladder safely. It goes down...down...down...until you get to a place so dark that you can barely see the light from whence you came.

You find a solid floor, and after feeling around along the walls, you make your way out of the sludge, after traveling about 100 yards along a long, squarish tunnel.

Krinn remarks, "I have no knowledge of this specific place. Interesting. Documenting and mapping now."

After some traveling in the dim light of Gunnar's darkvision, you make your way to a very large cavern (probably 500 square feet), and Krinn says, "Wow! I recognize this now! This is the planar observatory!

"Gunnar, place me over there!"

Gunnar sees a spherical imprint in the wall that Krinn would fit into, and he places the docent into it. Once placed there, the entire cavern lights up, and just like you saw in that room that you met Krinn, you see a much larger-scale version of the moons of Eberron orbiting the planet. Eberron itself is about 15 feet in diameter, and the moons are of varying sizes, but seem to be between 6 feet and 10 feet in diameter each. Each moon has a elliptical line that passes through the center of the moon, which shows the path of orbit for each moon.

https://www.worldanvil.com/uploads/images/0fb662d500df4397dcebe4187effe4c2.jpg

There is a 13th sphere, which seems like an empty void, but it still orbits like the other moons.

And then there is a strange object in the far distance, in the far corner of this cavern, with a trajectory line that does not follow the path of an orbit around Eberron. It seems to head in the direction of the farthest moon, Vult (associated with the plane of Shavarath).

Krinn says, "That strange object is headed in the direction of Vult. It is set on a collision-course with Vult, and should impact it in about 10 days.

"What is that thing?"
OOC:
This is where you all can send me what sort of knowledge you may have studied that might have been connected to identifying what this thing is.

Mechanically-speaking, you tell me how your knowledge in a skill or in a set of tools applies to knowledge that might help you know what that is, and if your story is meaningful, I will give you advantage in an Intelligence version of that applied skill or tool proficiency.

As an example, if you have spent time in Arcanix's planetarium or anything like that, you could use a Intelligence (Cartographer's Supplies) tool check or an Intelligence (Perception) skill check with advantage.
Aug 9, 2022 8:11 pm
Kevin gives Gunnar a look and then he himself releases Krinn from his mount in battlecat and places him on the stand.

As a soldier working with the warforged and advanced war machines, Kevin has an intuitive sense of weight, speed and trajectories. Is that a piece of the missing moon?

Gunnar shrugs at Kevin and doesn't interfere with the artificer handling Krinn. If they built an observatory below ground then he was out of his depth because none of that made sense to him.

The little ball sure does make a pretty light show, he reflects as the cavern begins to glow and reveal its luminous secrets.

Gunnar thinks about the heavens and anything his clan elders might have tried to teach him about it. If they had, he remembers none of it. Probably not enough fighting to spark his interest.

The Traveler
Ghillie knows that this is no moon of Eberron; in fact, this is nothing natural, at all. It seems constructed by some form of...magic, maybe?

Kevin knows that it is not orbiting anything; it seems to violate the rules of natural space-time. It heads directly in the direction of the moon Vult, like its intent is to collide with that moon. He also figures, based on its angle of trajectory that with a slight adjustment, it would head for the next closest moon

Gunnar doesn't recall any history in that hollow cranium of his (j/k), but Alin seems to remember something in his studies of the Traveler.

Alin connects lines from various written and oral scriptures he has read regarding his god:
Quote:
Massive but slow waves roll across the sea. Between their peaks, a long, low line of pale stone is visible in one direction, probably less than a half mile away...

Uneven causeways only a few feet higher than the sea's surface cut across its face, forcing the great waves to continually break. Massive, worn, and ancient, the causeways are arranged radially with a series of concentric bridges, like a spider’s web. At the "web's" center, an enigmatic city skyline of irregular towers and pale walls overlooks the red waves...

Rivulets of dark cloud stream past overhead, obscuring a weirdly textured, solid "sky" above them...
OOC:
I am going to change this to a spoiler, so that you all can see it, but your characters would not know about this happening to Alin, obviously.

Somehow somewhere someone is directing that huge ball of stone towards one moon, perhaps two. And it will hit in about 10 days, right? Krinn please tell me that the controls are in this complex. Otherwise, the only thing we can do is find a good place to watch the fireworks.
Aug 18, 2022 8:57 pm
Krinn says (audibly in the speaker system in this cavern), "I was not made aware of these parts of this facility. It seems that in the floors below this one, each of the subsequent 13 floors of the dungeon are connected through astral projection to each of the various moons and their associated planes.

"Perhaps travelling to the floor associated with Vult would give you a better sense of what is going on there, and perhaps you can find a way to stop that thing from there. That's the only thing I can come up with as a way to stop that thing.

"I am open to some non-linear thinking from organics, such as yourselves, for a way to manage it.

"You could also reach the library adjoining this cavern, to see what Gryndl'sir might have known about this body. He was a formidable polymath; he may have knowledge or thoughts in the library about this new celestial body."

As the group contemplates tries next move, Alin is silent. Their face becomes very pale as the enormity of their realization sinks in.
"Did everyone hear that?" Alin whispers.

Alins skin continues to lose colour, more than a paleness of shock, it’s as if the paints had been washed away from the canvas and only the sketch were left. Rather quickly, their hair grows white and lifts from their shoulders. Finally Alin’s eyes lose colour and any definition of pupils or iris. Shorter hair, slightly smaller in stature, Alin stands amongst the others in their true form.

Ghillie nodded at Alin once their reversion was complete. It was rare to see changelings in their natural form.

"I heard, kid, but I'm not panicking yet. Let's see what this great Gryndl'sir might have known about this unnatural object. Perhaps there may be the means to gain further knowledge within his sanctum, too."

"By stepping under the projection of Vult (you can see the sort of shadow/outline that it casts on the floor), you will be teleported to that floor.

"To return to this cavern, you simply have to go back to that teleportation circle on that floor.

"There are other entrances and exits between floors, but this is the most direct path to any one floor, or back here.

"I will not be in contact with you on any of those floors, but I hope that you can come back and relay what you have seen.

"Remember this issue with convergence, also. We are butted up against two big, scary issues here, but the satellite crashing into Vult is supposed to happen sooner than the convergence; I will let you all decide which to deal with first.

After Krinn says this, you notice runes outlining the shadows cast by each of the projections of the moons. You do not see a shadow cast by the strange satellite object aimed to collide with Vult, though. However, you do see runes outlining the shadow of the empty void that represents where Crya should be in orbit.

"Think of each floor like a glimpse into the plane you are in. Certain dangers and creatures and land and obstacles manifest, as if you were in that plane of existence.

"Since you are traveling to Vult, for example, (due to its association with Shavarath, The Eternal Battleground), you will see and interact with legions of angels and demons fighting continuously in battle. Anything that is part of that plane may be present at the time you travel down to that floor.

"This is according to the records left behind by Gryndl'sir; he doesn't really explain mechanically how this happens, but a docent is the energy source needed for the two-way teleportation to be possible."
OOC:
Essentially, each floor will act as a holodeck, with a lens into that particular plane. This holodeck has the safety measures turned off, so you are in mortal danger, and should be at the ready for encounters that may come your way.

Krinn doesn't know if it is purely hologram you will be interacting with, or if you are actually interacting with a portion of that plane, or if there is some other explanation for what you are seeing and interacting with.

Of course, I know, and you'll find out as we go down in the depths. ;)

"I’d rather like to see a glimpse of Xoriat, perhaps we’ll get that chance. I am not keen on a war between celestial beings we must keep out of the middle of the battle." Alin pauses and seems to finally consider the whole conversation "What do we look for once we get there? How far astray will we let ourselves go into this piece of plane? It seems very critical that we do not lose sight of the portal to get back here…."
Aug 27, 2022 1:15 am
"I've got enough crazy thoughts in my head already, Alin. I don't need those crazy thoughts manifesting outside," the druid grumbled. "What precautions should we take, Krinn?"
Aug 27, 2022 6:38 am
"Well, according to my interface with Kevin’s battle cat, you recently finished a century-long conflict.

"I expect that your visit to Vult may be reminiscent of that.

"The is conjecture and hypothesis, based on the information that I have on Shavarath."
Aug 27, 2022 12:12 pm
You are sure the portals are two-way? That we can pop in, and pop back out it they are not done fighting?
Kevin is itching to get underway, but that

Aug 31, 2022 12:04 am
You each step through the portal, and as you do, you seem to be spun in a circle, as if you were caught in a whirlpool. You spin, and as you spin, it is as if the surroundings stretch below you, until you don't see the cavern anymore. After about 20 seconds of this disorienting spinning, the spinning begins to coalesce, as you feel your weight shift from a weightlessness back to standing on solid ground. As the weight shifts, you each take one knee, and a loud sound emanates from your space, like that of a sonic boom.

You find yourselves in a somewhat ethereal place, and you all look at each other and see yourselves as translucent vestiges of yourselves. Your surroundings seem to be in the dim light of darkvision (grayscale colors), but you can see the distances as if it were day.

You are standing in a teleportation circle on the floor, which is located at the bottom of a 6-foot trench.

You peak out of the trench, and you see a network of trenches like this one, but whereas yours seems abandoned, those trenches hold angels, spectral conscripts, and sword wraiths, looking ahead at other trenches that house various demons, devils, other conscripts, and other sword wraiths. There are massive banners of either side and you see and hear enemy arrows, magic missiles, and other energy blasts zooming out around in your direction before you duck back down.

The trench leads in one direction (you're not sure which way is north yet), and then sort of veers, but in the distance you see a huge city, rivaling the size of Sharn, in that direction. Unlike Sharn, this city has been weathered and impacted by the war that rages outside of it.

After taking in all of this sensory information, you all notice Battlecat sniffing and paying attention to a strange coin on the ground (it is the size of a US quarter).

Those who hold the coin feel an ever-so-slight tug upward.

Each of you that handle the coin look up in the sky, and you see the moon Vult in the sky (about the half the size of Earth's moon in the sky), Eberron (a lush green and blue planet with a ring of asteroids and gaseous matter surrounding it, about the size of Earth's moon in the sky), but none of the other celestial bodies that you know should surround Eberron. And you see, pretty large in the sky, the strange celestial body in the sky (about twice the size of Earth's moon in the sky).

Alin does not glean anything religiously from the coin; on the back, though, is one of the signs of the Traveler.

"Hey guys! Gan you hear me? You need to go the City of Knives. There is a vantage point that is high enough to get a good look at the celestial body.

"It's called the Tower of the Arcane."

The transmissions cuts out there.

As you travel through the trench, you see that the trenches have been dug in such a way that they connect to other trenches. You see the images of soldiers from various ages of your world, some wearing armors you recognize (but all spectral), and others wearing armors you have not seen in your lifetimes.
