@Daglin & Thallan: Thankfully, the rock Thallan had found himself is easily large enough to hide two—perhaps even three if you squeeze close enough to each other—so Daglin has no problem joining Thallan behind his rock...

@Baelrick: The large man, perhaps finding this whole hiding game a bit foolish, or perhaps still being slightly hungover, simply sites himself on a large rock and waits. Though he had the wisdom to not sit himself in front of the breach in the wall (the check wasn't a critical failure after all), he is still plainly visible, and if anyone comes around the breach, it is entirely possible that the first thing they'll see will be Baelrick sitting on his rock...

Hrmph! Baelrick settles into his spot with a daring glance towards any who look at him with confusion. It wasn't like he was going to hide out here anyways.

While we're waiting for Arthur's response...
Eventually, those looking at the cavern entrances/crumbled section of the wall, will notice something large exiting the northern cavern, and slowly making its way toward the crumbled section of the wall. Before whatever it is reaches the wall, your animal companions start acting nervous, and the least brave of them are looking for a place to hide. The form finally reaches the wall, and uses it to prop itself up. This is when you notice it is a large bear. It sniffs the air, and lets a few plaintive grunts, looking in your general direction.

Tyr examines the bear closely, attempting to ascertain its nature. Was it the goblins pet? Or a dangerous competitor in their demense?

The big man guffaws as the bear emerges from the cave. It was no goblin, and it appeared the rest of his travelling companions were getting worked up over nothing! Sure, it could split them in twain. But only if it was really, really hungry. And suddenly his laughter stops. After all, Baelrick would make a pleasant meal for a bear...

"What now, brave companions? Shall we run in fear? Try to drop some stones on its head? Or perhaps let it wander while we finally enter yon dark cave? My buttocks grows weary of this rock."
OOC:
Are you spending a Fate Point to reroll? Or is there a reroll mechanic I'm missing?

Daglin does not know if he should be relieved or wary, but he slowly goes out of hiding. He figures that a bear would certainly not attack several humanoids if he didn't have to. "I guess we can wait for the beast to move away and have a peek...".
Jul 7, 2022 11:21 pm
Thallan tries to get a hold of Daglin's belt before he slips off. "Dam!" he whispers to himself as he just misses stopping Daglin. He knocks his bow and takes the high ground on top of the stone, in case the bear attacks Daglin.
OOC:
How big is this bear? If it's polar bear sized, or hell, even Kodiak sized, we are in for a hell of a fight!

OOC:
About kodiak-sized. You can make a Nature Lore or Perception check if you want...

Peli is blissfully unaware of what is happening at the cave entrance until Bean starts growling and all other animals appear various degrees of stressed. That actually prompts the halfling to abandon cooking and make her way back towards her companions, sticking her head out of the bushes. "Hey, Thallan was correct about it being a bear lair!" She notes aloud, seeing as everyone else are already out in the open and decidedly not stealthy. "But it can't be the source of nightmares...right? Unless it's a cursed bear?"

Peli watches the animal for a moment longer, then glances over her shoulder back at the clearing housing their "camp". "Do you think it will leave if we just don't bother it? We should probably move back to assude it from going after the bison and the mule."

"Wildling, you seem to know your way around an animal. Perhaps convince it to find berries elsewhere?" Despite Tyr's claims otherwise, it would see Baelrick still saw the man as something... lesser. Perhaps in time he would change his mind.

The bear looked delicious. Massive well fed, fat, and beautiful. Tyr didn't understand what Baelrick meant by convincing it away but was of the opinion that this close they could all take it with a surprise attack. He took three smooth stones from his pouch and loaded one into the slingstaff. Signing that everyone should ready themselves he looked for a point of egress that would suit and the took aim for the bear's skull.
Jul 13, 2022 8:05 am
Tyr planted both feet, taking a deep breath as he aimed for the bone at the base of the bear's enormous skull. It was a proud and magnificent creature. Not a Grizzly Bear, A Fellgrim Black Bear. Ordinarily only the size of a man, this magnificent creature had to have smelled them. It didn't care, and that alone made it a threat to all the creatures that lived so far.

"Beauteous creature
It's time you give up your throne
You are no forest God
I know Her Personally
Go to her with my blessing."

Tyr pushed his toes into the dirt bringing tension through his entire body. He waited for the opportunity. The bear lowered its head. With all the speed and grace of an Elf Tyr stepped into the mighty throw. And the stone hit the bear before the screaming sound of the shot.

p.29 of TAOS states that the maximum bonus for aiming is +50%, so your total score would be 109%, and by the looks of things, your first roll would have been a success, so no need to use a Fate Point to reroll it. Also, in order for the codes to work, please formulate your roll as "reason for rolling: XX%" without quotation marks. Now you just need to roll for damage, the bear won't dodge, it's sort of surprised even if it suspected you were there, and probably won't care for a small rock thrown it's way, until it learns about momentum the hard way... While I wait for your roll, I'll prepare the battle map as I hadn't predicted an encounter there...

"Wait, are you sure you wanna do tha... Hey! Hum..." Mumbles the dwarf, but too late to prevent the warrior from throwing his rock at the bear. In his defense he didn't think he would actually do that, as it came out of the blue. Daglin looks anxiously at the bear, then at his other companions, lost for words.

Watching the sling stone whizz through the air and get lost within the bear's hair, Baelrick can't help but guffaw while holding his belly. This wildling was so intent on his path, and was apparently doing everything in his power to be mauled by a bear. Did it even recognize the man as a threat?!
Jul 13, 2022 11:35 pm
When Tyr came out of hiding and took some time aiming and twirling his staff sling around, the bear reared up on its hind leg, roaring to intimidate Tyr who then let his stone fly... only to bounce harmlessly on the bear's thick hide... The bear then proceeded to drop on all four again, roar one last time (allowing you all to notice a missing tooth), and ready to charge at Tyr.

Combat has started!

First round of combat.

(I went ahead and placed you where it would make the most sense given the narrative... I still don,t have a token for Arthur, but since we haven,t hear from Unnaceptableusername in a while, we'll consider Arthur was off-map checking something else. If Unnaceptable pos back in, we should easily slide him into the battle...)

Sigh. It would not do to allow his... ally, perhaps, to be mauled by a wild animal. But perhaps there was a way to just scare it off, rather than have to fight the creature. Baelrick rises from his stone perch to his full height, raises his arms, and starts hooting and hollering! He bangs his hefty staff upon the rock, waving his arms, showing his own size against the bear. With any luck, the animal will be frightened off... or at least decide the group isn't worth tangling with.
OOC:
Baelrick will try to Intimidate the bear on his turn.

OOC:
The rules also states that if the enemy is at full strength, only a critical success on the Influence check, followed by a failure on the Resilience check will make the enemy back down... However, even if this bear hasn't been wounded yet, it is not exactly at full strength... I think given the situation, the +25% bonus to its resilience would be the most appropriate, or at the very least, the best approximation to the current situation, so I'll go ahead and roll with that.
The bear's attention suddenly turns to Baelrick. The bear rears up again, emits some roars, but they are pitifully weak compared to the bellows of your large companion. The bear then turns, emitting some plaintive groans, and slowly heads back up towards its cave, stoping from time to time to look back as if to see if Baelrick is still there and then noticing he still is, so the bear continues on until it disappears in its cave.

Seems the battle is over...
