Ch. 2 - The Grand Finale

May 10, 2022 9:00 pm
The sun begins to set over the northeastern coast of Xhorhas, and the sound of rhythmic drumming echoes throughout the Jumble, summoning the participants and onlookers of the Grand Finale to the city's paddock (area 5), which has been cleared of horizonback tortoises. The two Elders of Jigow, Elder Ushru, the elderly orcish priest from the swimming contest, and Elder Colbu Kaz, the goblin with a pot as a hat from the Rhymes and Riddles contest, stand in the middle of the road atop a platform of wooden crates. Eventually, the drums die down, and Ushru smiles, "Mighty warriors from here and far, brilliant strategists of young and old, you have impressed us with your feats of strength, your incisive wit, and your sturdy bellies," he booms proudly, and the crowd chuckles politely. "But the main event, as you know, is still yet to come! Only two teams will be chosen to compete in the final challenge—a race through the Emerald Grotto, in the depths of which the greatest prize awaits!"

Elder Ushru explains that he and Elder Colbu Kaz will choose two teams from among the festival’s most successful contestants and invite them to engage in a race through a submerged grotto to retrieve a jeweled icon that has symbolized the competitive spirit of Jigow for generations: the Emerald Eye. The winners of the race receive 100 gp and are hailed as the city’s Champions of Merit for the next year.

Elder Colbu Kaz joins Elder Ushru on the platform, where they consult briefly, pointing at figures in the crowd and whispering to each other. The crowd grows excited, waiting for every second to pass as countless groups recount the collective medallions. Finally, they seem to come to a conclusion and face the crowd again. Elder Ushru speaks up, "We have decided upon this year's Grand Finale competitors. First up, we have a team led by a Jigow native... the team with the second most known medallions... Ayo, Dermot, Maggie, Irvan, and Galsa..." the final couple names are hard to hear as the crowd erupts in cheer and drums bang on. Not far off from the group, the five people the party had met throughout the festival are all standing together, smiling and showing off all of their hard-earned medallions. Dermot the small goblin is close to Ayo, the water genasi's, side as Maggie towers above them with Irvan, the human, and Galsariad, the drow, on her shoulders.

The crowd dies down and the Elder speaks once again,"And for our second competing team... we have chosen a team that is certainly new to this town, but whose contributions to our city have not gone unnoticed... we have chosen... the team of... the Elder really milks that suspense, "Ardeth, Calla, Faelen, Kailani, and Tereze!" The crowd cheers once again, but mostly looks around unknowingly, waiting for someone to claim the name.
May 10, 2022 9:00 pm
The characters and the other party proceed with the elders to the southeastern edge of Jigow with what seems like the entire population in a procession behind them. The atmosphere is one of anticipation and excitement.

The characters and their rivals follow the elders as they wade through the shallows, from one island to another. When they reach the smallest island, the Elders stop and wait for the rest of the crowd to catch up. Elder Colbu Kaz places several potions of water breathing in front of the contestants—one for each of you. "Their magic lasts for one hour, so hopefully you're quicker than that" he says with a smile and a wink.

The other party immediately take the potions and they all begin chugging them, besides Ayo, who takes the potion, but places it into her bag instead. The other party are suddenly very busy making preparations. They all tighten their armor and prepare their weapons. Ayo casts a spell and ten magic berries appear in her hand, she then disperses them among the members of her party. Galsariad takes a moment to place a hand on each of them, and after he does so, faint, glistening lines of some kind of magical armor begin floating in the air gently around each of them. Dermot places a dunamantically-shining hand on Ayo's hip, and she faintly glows with holy guiding light.

Maggie, Dermot, and Irvan each give your group a respectful nod before assuming readied positions next to Ayo and Galsariad, with Ayo at the front of the pack.
OOC:
You know that you are about to enter an underwater race. You have a few moments to prepare, what would you like to do?
May 11, 2022 12:22 pm
As the other group is announced Ardeth cheers and lets out some whoops, giving Dermot a thumbs up and a wink. As their own names are announced she gives another cheers and starts to hug the others.

'Only together for a couple of days and already a great team. We've got this!'

-----

As the others start scrabbling to prepare Ardeth does the same chugging the potion then mumbling some words, her eyes glowing faintly. If there were any invisible tricks or secrets coming up in this race she would hopefully spot them.

Just as they go to begin she suddenly remeberes the medallions around her next and grabs the one from the maze, tracing it, and moving closer to the front. 'I think I may be able to guide us.'

"We've faced these competitors before" Tereze notes. "We can beat them if we keep on top". Her voice is strong and confident and she swigs a big mouthful of the potion.

"It'll be nice to hear our voices called out as the champions" She smirks and gives a wave to Irvan across the way in friendly competitive spirit. This time, it would have to be more than a one-bite lead.

The nerves continue to grow along with the size of the crowd as the final stragglers arrive on the small island. The small island has shallow, rocky beaches on every side, and a small cave entrance that quickly turns downward into a dark pool of water.

Elder Ushru
Elder Ushru stands before the mouth of the cave and addresses you and your opponents. "You brave and valiant individuals have triumphed in many challenges this day; now, the final Test of Merit awaits you!" He pulls a palm-sized gold-and-emerald amulet from his robes, holds it aloft, and declares: "This medal’s twin has been placed in the deepest cavern of the Emerald Grotto. Be the first to claim the Emerald Eye and return it to this place to be declared Jigow’s Champions of Merit! Begin now!"

OOC:
How This'll Work!

This race will be tracked in rounds (the amount of rounds you guys take to reach the final room vs the rival party), and because of the nature of PbP, this might get a little awkward, but please bear with me. If I have a post up for a room and you're not quite sure what to do or how to interact with it, or even if you have nothing to add except 'i just keep dashing', please say so! It's assumed that everyone is using their actions to dash forward, unless otherwise specified or because of some obstacle. However, in my opinion, this module does a really good job of rewarding player exploration in general, and I don't want to take away from that by just continually pushing you through each room.

To begin, I'm going to roll initiative checks for each team using the average of your initiative bonuses (rounding up), and go from there! This initiative will be used to determine ties in round count. Good luck!

If you want to retroactively use a spell, feature, item etc etc, let me know and we can retcon what we need to!

Another post incoming, please hold...

At the Elders' words, the crowd erupts and the two parties immediately dash headfirst into the pool of water, finding themselves in a small cavernous room. Your bodies (except Kailani's of course) panic as you take in the first breath of water, but then the magic kicks in and it begins to feel simply like heavy air. The light that trickles in from the grotto’s entrance is blotted out by enormous and thick patches of kelp that fill this underwater chamber. The tops of the kelp fronds brush the ceiling, but between the stalks you can spot a glimmer of light coming from two points further ahead, which lead off into two separate tunnels.
OOC:
It is a DC13 Strength group check to reach the other side of the room. A success means that it takes your group 1 round, a failure means that it takes your group 2 rounds. To succeed on a group check just means that at least half (so just 2 of the 4 of you, 3 of the 5 of them)) of you succeed on the DC.

Rolling both parties' group checks below...

Round Counter: 1
Both parties easily push their way through the mess of kelp and weeds, but the rivals pull just a bit ahead of the party. There are two tunnels that lead away from the kelp-filled chamber, a southern and an eastern one. The other party, following a swift decision from Ayo, heads down the southern path, but Maggie the 12-foot ogre stays behind and stands at the mouth of the tunnel, readying herself to force you to follow the eastern tunnel.

The Maze medallion around Ardeth's neck glows, and they instantly understand the differences between the two tunnels. Both tunnels seem rather equal in length, but the southern one is indeed shorter distance-wise. But, Ardeth senses some kind of interference, leading them to believe that the southern route is a high-risk-high-reward path, while the eastern path is a safer, albeit just slightly longer, route.

Da Map!
OOC:
Would you guys like to head down the eastern path, or attempt to bypass Maggie for the southern one?

After resting for a while and still digesting the pastries, the noble feels ready for another challenge. Typically he would call it a day, but a fight is over when you've won or lose and not when you desire it. So he ralleys up this "troops" and sways them to the entrance of the narrow cave where they are greeted by Elder Ushru. Eyeing the other team and seeing all their preparations, the fighter feels a little bit underprepared but obtains nothing to offer to help his team in the upcoming contest. Loosening his muscles, he makes sure that nothing of his equipment gets in his way and that this blades are ready when he needs them.

Finding his place at the start line, he listens carefully to what their objective will be in this event. Maybe they could take a page out of Ayo's book and let the other team complete the work for them and then take the medallion from then when thereafter. This would be a marvellous change. And ... there is one more thing he could do to alter the odds in his friends favor.

At the word "Begin ..." Faelan doesn't hurl himself in the water, but quickly casts an old charm, evidence of his heritage, that should provide them with a small advantage if things get messy. Losing sight of the others, as the vanish under water, the noble can see the yellow flames marking their position for a moment. At least some of them seem to have fallen under his drow magic. That's something. Satisfied he dives behind his friends and into the race.

The group reaches the fork, where Maggie stands shimmering in magic but firmly blocking entry into the southern path. After a brief exchange of looks, the party decides not to start a fight just yet, and heads down the eastern path. As you begin to leave, Maggie looks relieved, and gives you all a nod of respect before heading off down the southern tunnel to catch up with her own group.

The tunnel winds corner after corner as the tunnel grows darker, until it begins to light up again. The tunnel spills into a slightly larger chamber (E4) than the last. The walls, ceiling, and floor of this underwater chamber are covered in beautiful bioluminescent algae, which emits a faint bluish glow that dimly lights the wide cavern. Two large, jagged stone pillars, also coated with algae, stand at opposite ends of the chamber. Surrounding the far pillar and growing out to cover the room's exit is a thick patch of bone-white seagrass that gently drifts in the water.

Map!
OOC:
The base number of rounds (just based on average swimming speeds according to book) to get through this room is 2, which might be added upon depending on what happens next.

You can deal with the strange bone-white seagrass in any way you wish, but if you wish to simply swim on through, roll a DC12 Dex save. This doesn't have to be a group decision, you can decide on a course of action individually for this part.
May 18, 2022 10:29 am
Coming up behind his team Faelan recognises the two pillars as their way forward and aims right between them to get to the next room. With a little luck, the other group has had their troubles with the direct way and they would meet in the next passage of this race.

As Faelen glides swiftly through the patch of stark sea-grass, he senses in his periphery the grass grow closer to him. By the time most of his body has made it to the other side, he feels the grass attempting to grasp onto his feet with a foul energy. Luckily though, he manages to kick away the faint grip it had on his shoes before it can get a firm hold on him.

Kailani follows Faelan's lead and shoots through the strange plants with elegance. She stops at his side and glances back to the rest of their crew. The young woman takes another moment to gaze at the cavern with awe. It was truly beautiful and somehow ... otherworldly. Rival Party Round Counter: ? wouldn't you like to know ;)
With the help of her new friends, Tereze yanks and bites herself free from the necrotic grass. With that, the party continues down the tunnel into the next room. The tunnel opens into a cavernous space. Rays of dusklight shine through a wide crack in the ceiling, which sits ten feet above the water level. One side of the chamber is covered in the crumbled and muddy remains of a recent landslide.

As you swim into this area, ripples course through the water and the sediment in the walls of this room seems distrubed yet again. Large chunks of dirt, mud, and craggy rocks slide and fall through the water, some from beside you and some from above. When the dust settles, there doesn’t seem to be an obvious way out of the room besides the way you came.
OOC:
Rolling a DC14 Dex save for everyone, or will take 3d6 bludgeoning damage. [EDIT]: Kailani and Faelen take 11 bludgeoning damage.

Looking over, she notices that a tiny cave has been opened at the top of the slope of the debris on the east wall of the room, and dusklight shines through the settling waters. Additionally, which really catches her attention, is the fact that there is something shiny on the ground of the small underwater side room, glittering in the light.

Following the glimmer of something shiny, Kailani swims up to the top of the landslide-created slope and enters the small hidden room. There is much in the room beside fallen rocks and debris still settling, but sitting snug in a tiny alcove is a small vial of red liquid (easily identifiable as a basic healing potion), and a soggy spell scroll of Thunderwave (link).

Kailani pockets her loot (assuming) and dashes back down the slope of the room to continue with the rest of the party to the next room.

A small mass of wriggling bits dashes across the walls and ceilings before clumping together to form a school. The tiny fish have crazed eyes and long sharp teeth. With a hungry rage, the school of fish charges the party as they enter the room.

Kailani sees the fish coming and blocks their assault on Faelen. The toothy fish stop their advance as a few of them drown in air bubbles. Seizing this momentary confusion, the rest of the party unleashes hellfire, making easy work of the killer school of mad fish. Well, wouldn't it be funny if I told you that you and the rival party tied? Well, hold on to your butts!
After swiftly dealing with the swarm of fish, the party races through to the next chamber, the biggest one they've seen so far. Silvery light dances along the walls of this underwater cave. The water here is a little warmer, and a gentle current gently pulls you toward a crevice in the south wall that emits shimmering golden light. Prowling around the cave’s pillars is a truly massive faintly magically glowing shark. A gold amulet hangs from a very thick rope tightly tied around the shark’s body.

Ayo Jabe
Emerging out of a tunnel on the opposite wall at nearly the same time as your group, you see the rival party, looking about as tired and exhausted as you all are getting, but they look determined. Ayo notices the party and immediately begins doling out orders.

"Sorry about this pals, but we're here to win! Gal, you slow them down, Dermot, give us all a boost, Irv and Maggie, let's get that jewel!"

Ayo dashes forward toward the shark, takes out a long harpoon, and jabs it at the ropes holding the Emerald Eye to the shark's neck, attempting to sever them. But each time she thrusts the harpoon, the shark shifts at the last second, surprisingly nimble for its large size.

Enraged by the attacks, the moonshark extends its jaws and bits at Ayo. The moonshark takes Ayo by surprise as her entire arm and shoulder are swallowed by its staggering maw. Ayo yells out in pain and then wrenches her arm free, but not after multiple nasty gashes open up along her biceps and chest.

Irvan and Maggie rush up to the shark quickly after Ayo. Irvan gets to work on the rope with a small dagger while Maggie tries to wrestle the shark. But the rope is too thick for Irvan's dagger, and the shark's hide is too slick for Maggie to get a hold of.

Smelling the blood in the water, the shark enters a frenzy and takes another humungous bite at Ayo and chomps down on her forearm. She yells out again and punches the shark in the nose, which startles it just enough to release her arm and dart away from the people around it (from H9 to K3).

Taking the situation in, Faelan feels dread in his heart as the shark rips into Ayo and gorges on her flesh. An attack like that one would claim his life in an instant!

Whispering to his friends, he proposes: "Let's get over there. We can't allow them control the exit, or Maggie will block us again and we have already lost." Starting to swim empty handed, the half drow uses all his power to come up as unsuspiciously as possible next to the shiny ogre and the bloodied Water Genasi.

"Puh! You are a lot tougher than you look!" he compliments the blue skined woman earnestly. At that point he extends a hand and sends the third shadow dagger on this way against a sea creature. "What a beast!" the fighter calls out in awe while doning his shield. While doing so ostentatiously, in another corner of the underwater chamber, the shadows rise in secret and try to stay unnoticed.

Ayo, still wincing from the massive wounds, seems to appreciate Faelen's pleasantries during the midst of this chaos. "Damn straight. Though I thought I looked pretty tough, I think these shark bites will go a long away in helping with that."

Faelen summons his shadow, which seems to go unnoticed by everyone in the room.

Galsariad, the handsome and elegant drow mage, skirts around the massive shark, careful not to draw its ire by backing away too far. Following Ayo's orders, Galsariad begins chanting an invocation. A sphere of dark, dunamantic magic forms between his swirling hands and he hurls it towards the cave wall behind Kailani, Tereze, and Ardeth. The three of them instantly feel the gravity shift around them. The currents, once gently pushing them towards the crack in the other end of the room, now forcefully and violently pull them towards the wall.

Tereze, in her bulky, soggy, heavy armor fights the current, but Kailani and Ardeth are yanked back, crashing into the wall behind them. But, it seems like the drow is merely trying to distract you all, as he pulls the punch just short of doing more serious damage.

Seeing the slender drow before it glow, the moonshark lunges its jaws outwards towards Galsariad. An absolutely devastating bite wounds Gal to near unconsciousness. Both Ayo and Irvan yell out in unison, "GAL!" as a panicked look crosses their faces. When the shark retracts its jaws from the drow, all of the better-than-thou snobby confidence and upitiness is gone, as his life flashes before his eyes.

"What's your problem? Are you crazy?" Incredulously she shouts at Ayo and shakes her head. "Don't you see we got bigger problems than your petty run for glory?" She points at their severly injured mage, then gestures for Ayo to emphasise her bewilderment. Were they ready to give their lives for something as trivial as this?

Kailani saw the movement of a fin and quickly blasted her energy in the general direction, before she dashed south to be closer to Faelan and the exit his shadow was guarding ... unbeknownst to the other team. She didn't care about the medallion much at this moment, but they shouldn't allow a beast such as this to rowm in the depths. This was against all balance. This was an abomination. Her spine started tickling as she thought of what was roaming in the distance far below all things; and out of nowhere, a shape made from strangely moving water appeared between them and the beast. A tentacle like entity made entirely from magic and water, it struck forward demonstrating its purpose.

Ayo Jabe
Ayo looks back and forth between Kailani, Gal's dazed look, and her own wounds for a moment, deeply considering something, before gritting her teeth and internally pushing through something. She yells in response,

"We came here to win, we're gonna get that damn necklace! You're free to leave!

"Dermot, help us out, please!"

The small goblin man looks the most terrified out of everyone. His face is lost in thought but his hands and mouth immediately does what Ayo asks without hesitation. His symbol of the Luxon glows darkly and three beads of pure possibility shoot out through the water and are absorbed by Ayo, Maggie, and Irvan.

"We'll not sell your lives out for a hunk of metal" Tereze says, though her eyes remain firmly locked on the shark.

Kailani and Tereze blast and bite the giant shark thrashing before them, and though their attacks are certainly wounding it, the strong and hearty beast seems to barely notice the damage they've done to it.

Ayo, with a look of pure determination, moves quickly through the water towards the shark. "Again, you're free to go!" she calls out to Tereze, rather brusquely.

Galsariad the drow mage seems to come back to his senses somewhat at Kailani's questions. He immediately looks to Ayo, and sees her determination, and turns back to Kailani. "Unfortunately we've- I've got too much riding on this. We must see this through."

Ayo reaches the shark and makes another two stabs at the thick ropes around the monstrosity's neck. While one strike gets momentarily stuck in the shark's thick hide, the other pierces through a couple of the strands of the rope.

Enraged, the shark spins around and chomps at her again. This time when the shark releases her from its maw, she does not move, and begins slowly sinks into a crumpled pile on the cavern floor.

Irvan gasps and rushes over to her, taking a potion from his pack and immediately administering it to her, fighting fiercely to keep to potion from joining the blood clouding the water around the shark. Ayo jumps back awake terrified, but with even more purpose and anger in her resolve. She places a grateful hand on Irv's shoulder, and leaps off the cavern floor back towards the shark.

As all of that is going on, Maggie wordlessly decides (under the influence of magic) to simply nope out of this situation and swims back down the tunnel they emerged from.

With so many options around it to choose from, the shark bites indiscriminately. The first bite lands on nothing but bloody water, but the second one leaves Gal's motionless body thrown against the rocky wall behind him.

From the relatively safety of his position, Faelan sways his head at Ayo's stubbornness. This girl was raised by some specially obdurate dwarves, with lots of elder brothers as it seems.

This shark is no joke - but at least the other team is coming to the realization that hitting his team does not represent the solution to this challenge.

Looking at Kailani, the half drow winks and points unobtrusive with his chin at the shark. His dark eyes convey the message: be ready when it happens. As unseen as it has appeared a few heartbeats ago, the Shadow moves behind the stone and glides through the murky water with all the blooming blood clouds and viciously attacks the rope that is slung around the beasts head.

Underwater the rapier feels unhandy and out of place so a sharp dagger is the weapon of joice.

The changling grits their teeth as they see the shark rapidly take down two of their opponents. If someone else wanted ld to get close they could, but she was vehemently going to be 'not it'.

As Ardeth looks at Gal she hestitaes a moment, wanting their rivals out of the way, but also not wanting to leave the drow to die. Similar she may be able to do enough to Ayo to take the genasi out again, but this was a friendly competition, not a murderous one.

'Ayo, Irvan, if you don't flee you will get eaten!' She uses the same trick again even as she swims closer to Gal, ready to drag the unconscious drow out with their team if Dermot couldn't.

"Fools", Kailani mutters. They will not stop, not even if it costs them their lives. If she wants to protect her own people and maybe save one of theirs, she has no choice, but to act. Kailani feels for the power of the deep sea and distracts the massive shark by a lash from the tentacle shaped entity. Although it does not harm the predator, the tentacle opens up a small opportunity and Kailani dashes towards the rope with all her speed. She unleashes a smaller, more precise beam of energy to sever them and then grabs the prize while dashing back to a safer direction behind Faelan and her magic support.

Ayo's eyes glaze over at Ardeth's words and for the first time since you've all met her, that extreme look of determination falls from her eyes. She dashes as quickly as she can towards the exit, following in Maggie's trail.

The second Kailani successfully removes the prize medal from the its neck, the magic shark’s form begins to fade. It lets out a deep earth-shattering roar that reverberates through the water in pulsing waves, displacing rocks and causing pillars and structures to shift to list. Somewhere near the entrance of the Grotto, the two elders of the city of Jigow feel the rumble under their feet and share a knowing smile. The thought of complete collapse enters your minds as you begin to worry about the structural integrity of the room.

In frenzied death throes, the shark dashes around the chamber before crashing into one of the pillars on the far side of the room. As the shark's magic form finishes disapparating, the pillar concealing the source of the light behind it slowly falls to the chamber floor.

After a moment, the rumbling of the waters calms, and the room is filled with a gleaming light emanating from the south end of the room. Where there was once the small sliver of light poking through, a gaping hole of pure brilliance now sits. There is something magic- no, something divine about it, and it calls out to you. In the stunned silence of the room, you swear you hear someone desperately trying to reach you, using every bit of effort they have to get your attention and call to you, you personally, for help.

Dermot, before even noticing the light show, rushes over the Galsariad's slumped body and cast a healing spell on him. Gal slowly blinks back awake, and immediately has to shield his sensitive drow eyes. The look on Dermot, Galsariad, and Irvan's faces all show deep curiosity and intrigue in the beaconing room, but with both Ayo and Maggie currently fleeing from the race, they look confused as to what to do, whether to follow the deserters, to grab the prize, or to answer this call for help.

Swiftly, Faelan reaches out his inky dark fingers for the locket to keep it from sliding to the bottom of the suddenly brightly lit cave. His eyes, also sensitive, require a few heartbeats, but then the half drow can lower his left and no longer need to veil his eyes.

Risking a questioning look at his friends, the warrior breathes a sigh of relief. This competition had been harder and above all more dangerous than he had asumed.

Slowly, the nobleman moves in the direction of the call to perceive what it's all about.

Barely a moment to relish in Kailani's ingenuity, Tereze speaks up. "We must keep moving! Someone, or something is calling for our aid"

Tereze wades forward to the front of the group to direct them. Though, it's getting pretty tiring doing so much swimming with this heavy equipment.
Jun 10, 2022 6:43 am
As Kailani grabs the gem Ardeth let's out a cheer that is quickly silenced as the light appears.

At the sense that someone needs help Ardeth is immeadiatly moving, lacking the caution of Falen as she swims towards the light, falling in behind Tereze. Most thoughts of the battle had already left her mind but as she moves past their bewildered opponents she does call out to them.

'Ayo and Maggie should be back in a moment. We should help whoever this is first, then we can fight over the gem later.'
Jun 11, 2022 7:52 pm
Kailani quickly stuffs the medal down the tight front of her dress. If anybody wanted to steal it from her, they would have to get real close. Then she joins her people. She keeps a bit more distance to the source, though. She does not see a reason to get too cocky. Who knows what all this is about...they might not be out of danger just yet.

On her way, she unscrews the potion she found in the other room and drinks from it. She might need more strength to deal with what's coming - or at least a distraction from her injuries.

The party funnels through the shining hole in the cavern wall. The watery environment gives way to a cavern dotted with trees and pools of water. The walls are covered in vines of green ivy interspersed with colorful flowers. Part of the cavern is open to the sky, where the moon shines brilliantly through.

In the middle of the cavern is a sphere of pale light surrounding a crystal pedestal, upon which rests a golden pendant attached to a fine golden chain. The object on the crystal pedestal glitters like the sunrise.

The rival party file in behind you guys, and are immediately shocked by what they see. They look incredulously at each other and then all focus on Ayo's reaction, but she seems unsure of what to do.

Kailani immediately feels calm and safe. This feels right. The cave feels alive.

She trusts her instincts and touches Faelans arm lightly before she walks towards the pedestal. Kailani lets herself we guided by the deep humming magic that reverberates through her body. To her this cavern smells like sea and rain and stone with a hint of freshly cut parsley. An interesting sensation. The young woman goes to the light in a straight line and does not hesitate to reach out for it once she arrives at her destination.

They have come this way, they have met the challenges and now they will learn the secrets hidden.
Jun 14, 2022 7:11 am
Tereze's eyes linger on the sky, basking in the glow of the moon. The light reflects off her armour in a shimmer as she walks forward confidently after Kailani, placing her hand on the pendant, brushing Kailani's own hand.

Tereze closes her eyes, faithfully trusting what would happen next.
Jun 14, 2022 9:40 am
The changeling's eyes flick from side to side, uncertainty and confusion on there face as their form keeps shifting, as if trying, and failing to keep up with what they are seeing. Eventually the form settleson one the others would not have seen before. An incredibly pale humanoid with white hair and solid icy blue eyes.

They tilt their head listening, before slowly following after Kailani and Tereze, their hand also extending, eye full of curiosity.
Jun 14, 2022 11:08 am
Leading their small group to the pedestal, Faelan feels full of wonder in this cavern, filled with vines and flowers. Perhaps a monument to the Melora, the Wildmother?

Holding his hand back while he listens intently to the voice in his head, all the women rest their hands on the golden pendant. So the noble is the last one to lay his dark, caloused hand in between them, touching it as well and opening his senses. Maybe this ... whatever it is - could help him, on his personal quest - more than someone from over twenty years ago.

Looking at Kailani for a heartbeat, the half drow overs an encouraging wink.
Jun 16, 2022 2:07 pm
As each of you approach the pedestal, the light around the pedestal fades and a spectral figure in the form of a male human rises from behind the amulet. He is dressed in leather armor and a tattered red cape and wears a shield. His face is framed by curly brown hair and bears a melancholic expression. He pleads in a voice that sounds far away and muffled, "I-I am imprisoned. Please, please help me. Find me."

Suddenly, the ground vanishes beneath your feet and you fall, suddenly tumbling through a vortex of golden light. You fall deeper, deeper, deeper, then stop. The golden light subsides, and you find yourself suspended in a pitch-black expanse. You feel water buoying you and currents pushing your hair in strange directions. A vermilion light appears in the distance, illuminating the melancholy warrior, who is shackled to the ground by disgusting strands of a fleshy, crimson substance. He cannot see you.

He raises his gaze to the heavens and, sobbing, chokes out, "Moon Weaver, I beg of you. Guide those with the power to save me to the site where first I prayed to you." He looks around, and his eyes settle on you. He speaks in exasperated breaths, speeding through his words for he doesn't know how long he has. "Oh, gods, thank you! There you are! My name is Alyxian and I-I-I am lost in darkness. Long ago, I prayed to Avandra, the-the Change Bringer, in the heart of a temple of great evil. I beg you, take my jewel and…"

His words become fuzzy ad distorted as you feel consciousness leaving you, as if the growing pressure of the water were crushing the life out of you. One final plea in Alyxian’s voice is the last thing you hear before you pass out. "Save me. Please."

Distant voices begin to bring you back to the real world.

"Did you guys hear that voice, what did it say about the jewel, is it magic?"

"I don't know, but they're all still breathing, I think they're going to be okay. See if you can wake them."

"Did you see where they put the prize?"

"Really, Ayo? This is not the time for-"

"Friends! They're waking up!"

Slowly, you begin to regain your consciousness, coughing to expel ancient, vermillion tainted water from your lungs. You all wake up side by side, slumped against the pedestal with a hand glued to the jewel, with the rival party backing away now that you are conscious to give you space.

https://i.imgur.com/tJGbCTZ.jpg

Dermot is the first to move, getting down on one knee with his hands out in front of him and nothing but concern written on his face, "Are you guys all okay? You scared us, that's for sure."

Galsariad butts in with curiosity and the beginning hints of jealousy on his face, "Did you see something? We heard a distant voice rambling about temples and jewels and-"

Irvan slaps Gal on the shoulder gently, "Gal, give them a second." Galsariad looks slightly ashamed and sheepish after Irvan's scolding.

"Back off." Kailani snaps as she pushes the offered hand away. She turns away from them, and uses the edge of the pedestal to stand up. Kailani feels dizzy and has a bitter taste in her mouth, but manages to inconspicuously feel for the medallion she has hidden away earlier. It is where she has put it.

She turns back again and glares at the other party. The way they have been going after the medal, risking their lives for a game - maybe this is the true reason. "Now you tell us what all this is about. And truthfully. This isn't some silly game to win favour in a small town, is it? Tell us what you know - you owe us that much." Her angry stare focuses on Ayo.

Tereze groans as she tries to shake off the grogginess of unconsciousness. "I'm.. Fine.." She manages as she readjusts to the cavern

As Faelan opens his eyes and sees the other group standing so close, a feral grunt escapes his throat as the fighter sits up and his hand starts for the heft of his long steal. Stopping this reflex as he becomes aware of their surroundings, the half drow hoists himself up and eyes the Ayo and her friends suspiciously. The contest is over. Isn't it? This is something on a whole another level.

Hearing Kailani's brusque words the noble from Rosohna recognises the truth in them. The other team had known more, for sure!

Turning his gaze back to the jewel, the half drow tries to take his hand away from the pedestal. Is it possible? Yes? But can he take the jewel in his possession? The voice had told them, to take it and to find "Alyxian" in the temple of great evil. And save him. A follower of the moon weaver as it seems. Thinking about the melancholy warrior, Faelan tries to recall details. As a fighter he may recognise the style, origin, or time period of the armor and equipment.

They suddenly stop as if startled by the sound of their own voice and look over to the arm stuck with the others. another wave of confuse, then panic crosses their face, before they rapidly shift back into the form everyone knows best, the half-drow Ardeth.

'I'm fine. Parts of me have ben through worse, I'm assured.' She grins, before finally reading the room and realizing some of her companions are less happen with the other group.'Do you know more? If you do it would be helpful...?'

Recognizing the hostility and tenseness of the party, Dermot immediately takes a step back with his hands above his elbows as a sign of peace. Maggie the ogre and Irvan the human immediately follow suit. Galsariad remains far away from the party, but does not put his hands up, keeping his eye fixed on the jewel. Ayo takes a protective half-step in front of Dermot without raising her hands. It is clear that Ayo is the leader of this rival party, but they are not a cohesive unit yet. However, the one thing that is consistent throughout all of them is that they all look just as surprised and curious as you about this room, the events that have unfolded within it, and the jewel on the pedestal (that I don't believe any of you have picked up yet, unless Faelen was trying to, in which case he can pick it up without issue).

Ayo
Ayo seems frustrated, both because it seems that her team has lost the race and that your party has taken an accusatory tone towards hers. "Listen here, I don't know who you are, where we are, or what is happening at all! Last I checked, you were in this race too, so don't pretend you weren't putting your lives in danger for the prize as well. We're a newly formed adventuring party and I just wanted to fund our first journey out of this shithole town I've been trapped in my entire life."

Dermot
Dermot speaks up leaning around from behind Ayo's hip, "Truthfully, we did not know what to expect from this race, it was a lot more dangerous than we thought it would be, especially that shark. When you guys went unconscious, we heard a very distant voice, but it was hard to make out what they said. We don't mean you any harm, we just really wanted to win, and now we're a little curious about this jewel and stuff."

Faelen thinks back on the dress of the man in the vision, but cannot place the región or time period exactly. However, it does strike him as very old.
Jun 19, 2022 7:03 pm
Kailani looks at the members of the other team for a moment longer. Then relaxes visibly and says:
"Alright then. I believe you. Forgive my bluntness. Where I come from, trusting strangers, especially rivals, just isn't a thing."

The Ashari woman looks around with big eyes. She asks noone in particular: "Do you reckon there's a shortcut, or shall we return the way we came?"
Jun 20, 2022 7:51 am
"It's worth looking around" Tereze nods. She gives the human a slight elbow. "No hard feelings? We should share a drink together when we get back. Maybe we can find some coin in the prize money to help you four out" She adds kindly.

Catching Ardeth's change only out of the corner of his eye, Faelan feels unsure what just happened. Shining eyes? Chalk-white skin? Is his new friend a fae touched creature? And if not, what is she? Glancing over to Tereze, the noble is even more unsure what is up with her. Coming to the conclusion that a talk between friends will be one of the following step of their acquaintance, the fighter stuffs the newly found jewel underneath his dripping studded leather armor and closes the front up to his neck. He still doesn't know whom to trust in this strange environment. Even if everybody seems to relax at the moment.

"Okay. Let's move out and end this game." he announces as the steps forward and out of the circle of his friends. Tereze's idea of allocating some of the wealth they may get, to apiece the other team, sounds like a cunning idea to the man from Rosohna. Coins come and go, but you can never have too many friends. Favouring the heavily armored woman with a pat on the shoulder while passing her, expressing approval to the priest's idea, Faelan starts moving to the exit they know. If the other group blocks his way out, he holds and looks at them askance.

Ardeth watches as Faelen takes the jewel, her hand hesitating briefly as he takes it away from the rest of them, but she lets it go, a curious look still on her face, before you turns to the others.

Drink and food sounds good. We can definitely help if you want to leave the town. Sometimes you just got to take a leap. And sometimes that leap leads you to a graveyard where you find a bunch of others also trying to be adventurers.' She grins as she tries, and likely fails, to throw her arms around all three at once.

At Kailani's relaxation, all of the rivals also visibly de-tense and put down their surrendered hands. Maggie begins exploring the cavern you and the rival party find themselves in. She takes out a notebook, large to any average-sized humanoid but puny in her ogre hands, and she begins drawing, writing, and sketching in it, trying to gather as many details as she can about this beautiful location.

Ayo Jabe
Ayo's furrowed brow and the small stream of steam flowing from her ears are clear signs she is still hung up on the fact that they've lost the race, but she can't help but chuckle in agreement with Kailani, "Same goes for 'round here, everyone's always competing and it's always the rule of the top dog. Gotta earn every bit of trust and help in this town."

Ayo looks completely shocked and baffled by Tereze and Ardeth's offer of aid, "Oh, um, really? You guys would do that?" Dermot smiles and pats Ayo's leg, "See, told you there are still some good people out there." he looks at each of you with respect.

In his hands, Faelen feels the weight of the shiny new Jewel, and feels a divine sense of importance emanating from it. Just by holding and wearing the Jewel, there is a profound pull somewhere deep within him that is quickly deepening to spend some time with it, attune to it, learn its powers, and strangely, listen to what it has to say.

Throughout all of this, however, Galsariad almost never takes his eyes off Faelen, who is now wearing the Jewel. His gaze is not vindictive or threatening, but pure, magical curiosity, betraying a intense thirst for knowledge and magic in the drow. The rival party does not block anyone's exit, and instead begins walking with you back the way you came (as it does not seem like there is any shortcut out of this room), with Maggie pulling up the rear trying to spend every extra second she can inside the strange cavern.

Galsariad
Galsariad falls in step beside Faelen. "Would you mind telling me what happened when you all went unconscious? I must admit that I am very intrigued by this Jewel that you have found, and wish to know more details about it and the events that just occurred." There seems to be a slight twang of regret that he waited around for Ayo's orders and didn't pounce on the Jewel himself, but he is not coming off in a menacing way.
OOC:
Will move on to the end of the race eventually, but wanted to resolve the conversations with the rivals before we get back to the celebreation.

Ardeth begins considering the 'temple of great evil' this strange apparition spoke of, and something of a past life's memory burbles up from the back of their mind. The memory is foggy and feels... old, but Ardeth remembers a military outpost/settlement Southeast of Jigow called Bazzoxan (pronounced: "BAZ-oh-zan", can see it on this map), where the Aurora Watch (basically the Dynasty's military) protects the Kryn Dynasty at large from the demons and aberrations that spill from some ancient temple that dates back to the Calamity.
Jun 23, 2022 8:51 am
Getting caught by Ardeth's embrace, the noble stiffens for a heartbeat before blushing and relaxing into it. At that point in time he smiles warmly at the ... friend momentarily known as a half drow and restarts his way out of this cave. For the day, he had had enough action and visions the fighter thinks by himself. But he still hadn't found Belana. Maybe a bit later after their victory party or tomorrow?

Suddenly the Echo Knight becomes aware of the pull the magical Jewel exorcises. Conceivably Kailani could take a look in a private moment? She seems to be the most gifted of their small group.

As Galsariad steps beside him, Faelan let this train of thoughts pass and raises an eyebrow inquisitively. Listening, he wages his options before choosing: "I can't tell you much. For me it was like a hazee dream... Of a man in none distinct armor. Talking about being lost in darkness." There Faelan stops and determines the reaction of the drow mage. He is not sure what to share and what to withhold from Galsariad.
Jun 23, 2022 3:50 pm
Faelen looks at Galsariad’s face, drow to drow, as he tells him of the vision they experienced, and Faelen sees nothing but extreme curiosity. Galsariad is hanging on every word, deciphering and searching for every possibility of new knowledge.

Elder Colbu Kaz
The rivals and the party make their way side-by-side back to the entrance of the Emerald Grotto. Along the way, the party fills the rivals in on what they experienced, and they all seem very curious to know more, Galsariad especially so.

WHen you reach the entrance, the rivals step back to allow your party to all break the surface of the water together before them, with the prize medallion in tow. You present the prize to the Elders of Jigow, who smile and bow to you. The pot placed precariously upon Elder Colbu Kaz's head just barely avoids falling off.

Elder Ushru
Elder Colbu graciously takes the medallion from you as Elder Ushru procures a heavy bag of coins and places it in your hands, informing you that you have also won a free night's stay at the Unbroken Tusk Inn (the inn atop the horizonback tortoise, where the pie-eating contest was held earlier today. As he retracts his hands, it almost seems as if he hears a far-off sound calling his name. He looks confusedly between the lot of you, his quizzical gaze lingering on Faelen the longest, but seems to find nothing of interest and returns to a rickety clap of his hands.

You are immediately surrounded by the crowd, children race to the front to get a glimpse of the winners before large ogres and orcs emerge from the crowd and gleefully hoist you up onto their shoulders and carry you back to town like the champions you are. The sun has fallen and the town of Jigow is fully in party mode.

The rivals generally celebrate with the crowd and follow behind you. Maggie and Irvan seem joyous and just happy to have been a part of the race. Galsariad looks lost deep in thought, mentally attached to his physical body just enough to not get lost in the crowds, all the while the intense furrowing of his brow gets progressively deeper and deeper. Ayo looks jealous and is sulking a bit, but Dermot walks at her side trying to both cheer with the rest of the crowd and cheer Ayo up, reassuring her that this is a good outcome, and pointing out how there are few people he would rather lose to than your party.
OOC:
You have won Jigow's Festival of Merit!! You have earned 100 gp (25 split to each of you, or you can start a group fund, up to you) and an all-expense-paid 1-night stay at the Unbroken Tusk Inn!

I will be setting up some individual threads for some individual plotlines to shake themselves out. But please feel free to post here anything your character might do after winning/the rest of the night or RP you want to do with your party/rivals!
Jul 2, 2022 10:40 am
Laughing and cheering Faelan let himself lead by the crowd of children and lifts up his arms in triumph and smiles broadly at his teammates. A victory won as a group! They had done it. Their perseverance and ingenuity had brought them in the end this win!

Letting Tereze seize the money and see to it that the other team get some of the spoils, as promised, the half drow is in the mood to party! His wounds are not grieve enough to hinder him this night. Clasping Kailanis arm, the noble leads their group to the Unbroken Tusk Inn and orders a round for them and even Ayos team if they are in the mood to come along.

Naturally he wants to find out the things about his uncle, but at the moment a celebration is the appropriate thing to do!

Putting a frothy beer in Ardeths hand he clinks his jug with hers and takes a big gulp. Smiling he wipes the foam from his lips. Not a noble thing to do, but not improper of the fighter who won the Festival of Merit contest.
Jul 3, 2022 6:22 am
You might think Tereze had enough of pie from the failed pie eating competition, but it is exactly what she wants to celebrate their victory. Pies all round! And wine! It might not be as good as the stuff she's used to, but it doesn't matter once there's lots of it.

Not too long into the night, Tereze has a captive audience for her heroic retelling of the day, including arm wrestling interludes with the crowd.

I mean it's yall's gold so I don't want to be the decider of this decision lmao. They'd be happy with 10 gold, 20 if you're feeling generous.
The rivals partake in the evening's celebration as well, happily taking rounds of pies and shots and ordering a round for everyone as well. Irvan and Ayo take to the partying well, encouraging the arm wrestling competitions and any drinking games specifically designed to get everyone drunk, not just the losers, and especially the audience. Galsariad, Dermot, and Maggie are happy to sit around a table to the side of the action. Galsariad reads and thinks and researches, sipping on a finely aged wine. Dermot makes idle chitchat with anyone who stops by their table but is content to sit quietly, refusing any drink with an alcoholic content above that of water. Maggie pulls out a pair of glasses fit for someone of Dermot's size and writes in a journal, occasionally looking to a random corner of the room, deep in thought until the words finally arrange perfectly in her head or she needs a sip of a fanciful fruity cocktail.

A cool salty breeze seeks out Kailani in her sleep in the hours just before dawn and finds her in the chamber's bed. It caresses her back as she lies on her stomach. She wakes. She lifts her left hand from the flawless green skin, careful not to disturb the dreamer beside her and stretches like a cat, extensively and utterly silent. Noiselessly she puts her bare feet on the ground and walks the few steps towards the window. Kailani wraps herself in a coat made from light fabric and sticks her head out the window a bit. Immediately the breeze catches her locks. It plays with the young woman's hair for a moment, then the wind returns to the sea. It leaves a tangy smell and a yearning.

She makes her way through the dark room and steps outside. In a few minutes Kailani crosses the distance from the inn to the docks. She sits down at the end of the closest jetty and breathes in the smells that make her think of home. Cross-legged she feels the wood underneath as well as the slightest swaying caused by the movement of the sea, that seems to her like a living breathing organism calling for her embrace. Kailani thinks of the last few weeks, the friends she has found and the challenges they have overcome, the vision and the marvellous festivities in their honour. She has savoured all that has been offered, has enjoyed the town and it's temptations to the fullest. She feels full of life, content and hopeful as she lowers her feet into the surprisingly warm water and waits for the first light of the new day.

Beforing going off to somewhere else, Faelan tries to catch Ardeth in a quiet moment and asks her amicable: "What is up with you and your many faces? What are you? And why the many changes?"

The noble seems rather intrigued by the ever-changing woman and is interested what lead to this kind of behavior.
Jul 15, 2022 5:15 pm
Ardeth happily joins in with any festivities, mingling with both the group and their rivals, plenty others as well, drinking and celebrating away, her form shifting as it does every now and then. As Faelen approaches at a moment of her sitting down and catching her breath from dancing and celebrating him she gives him a grin and raises her tankard towards him.

At his question she pauses a moment before grinning and shrugging. 'What's with you and your single face?' She teases, taking a big sip of her drink before sticking out her tongue.

'My many faces are all me. Other times I was watched by the Luxon. Right now I am Ardeth, but ..' She suddenly shifts into the male orc who rode the the tortoises.

Arkas
'...like this I prefer to go by Arkas, as I did in life. As do our 'many faces as you put it.' He chuckles and takes another swig. ' Tell me friend, have you heard of changelings? There are a few of us around here and there'

Badly stifling a laugh to Ardeth's retort, Faelan raises his cup in salute and takes a big gulp himself, before looking amused at the woman. An amusement that dwindles rapidly as soon as he understands the many faces have their origin in the rebirthing powers of the Luxon. Of course! So, suddenly somber for a moment, the noble bows his head and replies with the formal greeting: "Light be with you." before weighing his answer to her last question.

"I've heard of your kind Ardeth, but as I understood it, your people a few and enjoy a life of secrecy." Beholding his friend: "But you are an excaption of this "rule", as I see it." Having many questions, like if it is true that changelings are fae that where placed in the cradles of unsuspecting humans by faeries who stole their original child in exchange, the fighter is lost for words as he feels it is not appropriate to ask something like that right now. Instead, he inquires a different, but much more interesting fact: "How many lives have you experienced? How many names do you recall? Do change into all of them?"
Jul 18, 2022 5:01 pm
Veliath
The form shifts again into the haughty drow from oustide the maze , speaking in a tone more familiar to that of a nobles. 'Did you just ask our age? She holds Faelen's gaze a it to long as she seems serious in asking the question, before the form shifts back to Ardeth.

Ardeth
'That is a hard one. I mean.. it's the more recent of us who come to the forefront the most, but there are a lot of us. We all help out. I me there's me, I only died like 20 years ago, then Veliath was before me...was it arArkas or Grana next.. um Girik was in there somewhere,... as she speaks she keeps shifting. Back to the drow from a moment ago, the male orc, a female Goliath, a goblin too swapped in the robes to tell...

' Like occasionally one I don't even know about will turn up if it hey can help. But I guess the answer is a lot. The more recent the easier it is to access the memories though, to change. Not that we're only limited to herself? She suddenly flashes a grin and Faelen is looking back at a copy of himself, before she's back to being a half-drow

Very much in awe by how fare the changeling could remember her lineage, the fighter still smiles a wry smile at Ardeth's reply if he is inquiring about her age. Isn't age just a number for an elf? Faelan wants to retort, but decides to listen a bit longer. His curiosity is being stilled as they speak.

As Ardeth - she will be Ardeth for him he decides in this moment - takes on his face, Faelan barks a laugh. "Of course! All this talk of lifes lived could make a man forget." Coming a bit closer, his eyes shine in an inner amusement, with maybe a touch too much ale in them as well, as he welcomes her again: "I am happy you are in my team. You and your powers, so strange they seem to me, are more than welcome. I've got the feeling that you will have plenty of opportunities to put them to good use."

At last he raises his cup and clinks it with Ardeth's in acceptance and even a bit admiration for the woman.
