Dengus the Ditch Digger
Dengus makes his way carefully into the cavern-room after the door is opened, and the bizarre scene revealed. Sword in hand, he kneels near Dahut. "Captain de Keradel's consort, wasn't she?" he asks the others. Gesturing to the scroll near the candle, he hopes one of the others knows how to read.

"What's it say? That woman Belamina knows how to read, if she's needed."
OOC:
Examing the body, pick, and anything near it more carefully.
Belamina the Fortune Teller
Outside, Belamina is unaware she's been named. She's feeling better though, and now paces the deck, reading from the book with gusto and emotion, letting everyone know just what transpired aboard.

"A reef-wraith!" she repeats fervently, raising her voice and a clenched fist!
OOC:
She's totally hamming it up now... and is still reading!

Merilda Hovelsworth

Eggo and Merilda resolve themselves to follow the demon-slayer into the bowels of the ship; down beyond the bloody work they had done earlier!

Merilda Hovelsworth
"Lead on, stranger!" she says to the man who has kept a tight lid on his lineage. And then her and Eggo slink down the ladder behind him, weapons at the ready!

Gryff and Bryson look about the room, and then examine the petrified woman.

The baker boy leans down to touch the woman’s strange skin, when Gryff wallops his hand.

Gryff the Elder
"Dont touch that! Could be catching!" he says, reproachfully.

Diverting his hand instead, the baker boy picks up the pick and feels it’s weight for swinging!

Bryson
"What happened her, then? Magic?"
Jan 1, 2023 1:01 pm
Bryson attempts to pick up the pick but it is mid-transformation into stone along with the body. As Dengus looks closely, he can see the stone ever so slowly growing on her body as its slowly transformed. You see no injuries and judging from the scroll that is open you conclude it is the work of magic. Unlike the other rooms there is no destruction or blood.
Belamina reads another entry: "Four more taken tonight! Crew on double shifts. Some of the crew have been heard whispering ‘skrag’."
The narrow ladder from the main deck descends into the ship’s cargo hold. The area is dark and cramped, and smells of yeast, rot, and whale oil. The entire area is crowded with crates and barrels carefully stacked and tied together. Along the bulkheads of the ship, tied down with numerous ropes and elaborate knots, are several masts, sails and other items in order to repair the ship while at sea.

Both fore and aft, you see many posts with rows of hammocks fastened between them. The crew’s lockers are neatly stacked against the port and starboard bulkheads. Five unlit lanterns sway over the bunks.

Several corpses of sailors lie rotting on the deck. Like the others you’ve seen, they are bloated and rancid, and appear to have been disemboweled. Rats feeding on the corpse’s extremities scurry away as you approach.

Exits include a ladder leading upwards, the cargo hatch overhead, and a smaller closed hatch in the deck.

Dengus the Ditch Digger
"Leave it, lad!" Dengus says as Bryson attempts to pick up the miner's implement. "There's foul sorcery at work here, can't you see? Look at her skin -- there! And there! This woman is turning to stone before our eyes!"

Crossing to the candle and parchment, he grabs and paper and heads outside, towards Belamina. "Watch her! See if there's some way to slow the change!"

Belamina the Fortune Teller
Outside, Belamina gives up her ranting for a moment so she can read the scroll Dengus brings her...

Eugene the Raving Lunatic
Above, Eugene tucks away the spyglass and starts to descend from the crow's nest.

Brother Longfoot
Longfoot gives out a shout of joy when he hears Eugene exclaim the other ship has seen their signals. With the essential mission accomplished, he descends with Eugene. As he does so, he remembers the old stories of Klabutermen, who are rumoured to fix the ship when summoned with song. Brother Longfoot, somewhat abashedly, will begin to sing a Klabutermen song to bring them to light.

Baldwin
Deep in the bowels of the ship, Baldwin will call out to the shadows "Show yourself, demon!" When nothing materializes, he stows his hammer at his hip and begins to ransack the cargo, hoping to find barrels of whale oil (but willing to find other interesting things). He explains his plan: "When we are rescued by the other ship, we will light the whale oil barrels on fire and set the whole ship ablaze! The beast will burn!" He doesn't mention he plans to go down in a fiery blaze if he dies, too.

Bryson looks at Gryff with a shrug then.

"Watch her." he says, repeating the request. "Well, let’s close that door first of all!"

Bryson crosses the room and closes the door Dengus just left by. It’s just the three of them now, and he felt that little bit safer!

Merilda looks down at the waiting Eggo and a moment of understanding passes between them. They split up, and both begin searching the cargo, too. They try to make quick work of it. Quick, and quiet!

Eugene the Raving Lunatic
OOC:
Depending on how much time passes here, should probably note that Eugene’s next stop is to investigate the bottles and ointments and such that were in the room with the body…
Jan 6, 2023 12:45 pm
The scroll Belamina reads is a spell called "Sleeping Stone." It puts the caster in a sleep-state while turning their body to stone to protect it. The spell is set to end when a pre-determined interrupt condition is said during the casting. Along with instructions for casting, it also describes how to reverse it before the interrupt condition is met. Two methods are detailed: one is the use of a dispel magic spell, and the other is through a ritual called "blood from a stone" where someone must draw a few drops of blood from the affected caster's heart before it turns to stone.
Brother Longfoot sings to the Klabauterman. There is no immediate response, but he hears an answering song blow through the rigging on the ship. It seems to be a sign of acknowledgement.
As Bryson, Eggo, and Merilda start searching through the expertly stacked and packed cargo, Bryson unwittingly unties a group of barrels that begin crashing down.
OOC:
I rolled everything to speed it up. Only Bryson failed, but by one point. You can spend 1 Luck otherwise take 1d6 damage and most likely get smooshed.

Belamina the Fortune Teller
Moving into the room where the woman lies in repose, half-transformed to stone, Belamina relates to anyone listening what she learns from the scroll.

"This is Dahut here on the floor!" the dark-haired fortune teller says, "just as I foretold! And this parchment here, this scroll -- it is the very magical spell which put her there, slowly to petrify and turn to cold stone! For her protection or for some evil intent, she has been ensorcelled!"

She taps the scroll. "The spell will end when some condition is met, but we have no way of knowing what this condition might be!" Kneeling, Belamina examines Dahut carefully, grazing the skin on the other woman's cheek and throat with her fingertips. "The magic can be dispelled by someone knowing such things, a wizard or the like... or there is a ritual! But to complete it, we need a few drops of her blood. Taken from her heart!"

Dengus the Ditch Digger
Dengus returns to the room as well, intent on turning it over, searching for some other clue that might unlock the mystery.

Eugene the Raving Lunatic
In the next room, where he intends to pilfer all manner of things, Eugene begins searching for a long needle or some other means of extracting blood from deep in the human body...

Not exactly an agile young man, Bryson doesn’t have the time to dodge out of the way as the barrels behind to fall down around him; and heavy ones too, laden as they are with good!

One cracks him in the forehead and it all goes dark for him. He makes a confused, pained sound, and then nothing! Silence, as blood behind to ooze from a fine dent in his head.

"Those wizards are too clever, by half!" calls to Belamina from where he sits nearby. He feels stronger now, and his interest is piqued.

"I don’t suppose it’s as simple as all blood comes from the heart, and we might simply prick her finger? It seems like something one of those odd fellows might take delight in designing!"

Eggo and Merilda both dive out of the way of the barrels, as one takes the baker boy in the head. It’s apparent that there’s nothing to be done for him. They look down at him a moment, not undisturbed by the act… and yet they turn back to their work a moment later, once the boy has departed this plane. There’d be time for grappling with what happened here later!

Dengus searches the room but finds no other clues. Eugene finds an assortmant of personal items but only one able to draw blood from the heart: a tattooing needle.
Down below, Eggo finds two spare anchors while Merilda finds sail cloth.
Baldwin tries to bravely draw out the creature but gets no response. He thinks he hears thumping on the outer hull, almost like footsteps. But maybe it was a shark or debris in the water.

Eugene the Raving Lunatic
Eugune, wild-eyed and with his bird mask firmly in place, arrives in the room with the stone-slumbering woman and several fellow former prisoners. "I have this!" he says holding up the tattooing needle. "It will draw! It will draw ink sigils on flesh... draw blood from her breast!"

Belamina the Fortune Teller
Belamina nods at Gryff -- it's worth a try -- and then flinches a little at Eugene's outburst... before taking the needle from him, delicately...
OOC:
What does the ritual consist of? How long does it take, what to we need to do, etc.?
Jan 9, 2023 12:34 pm
OOC:
The ritual takes only a few minutes. Draw the blood from her heart, put the drops in a bowl, say the incantation written in the book, and presto. It's going to be a DC 17 Agility check. Failure will be...not good.

Brother Longfoot
Encouraged by the results, Longfoot continues to sing his song to the Klabautermann, hoping that it can magically fix that helm so they can move toward the passing ship! Meanwhile, he keeps a careful eye open from his high vantage point for the beast that Eugene spotted earlier.
