Aboard the Star of Nostro

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

The sounds of waves and the smell of salty air peels you away from the torpor of sleep. Fighting a headache and a stiff back, you open your eyes just wide enough to realize you’ve been chained to a pole deep in hull of the sailing ship The Star of Nostro.

Your last memory was sharing a goodbye dinner your neighbors, the ship’s captain Kristene de Keradel, her consort Stone Dahut, and the ship’s crew. You were all celebrating your last night on your island home before departing to seek a better life working in the copper mines of Lys, where the promise of wealth and opportunity awaited. The crew even tattooed several of you during the celebrations.

After your eyes adjust to the dark, you realize you are bound to a wooden pole with 2 others—three-to-a-pole—by a rusty chain shackled on your wrist.

To add to your misery is the gagging odor of rot and dank earth. The source of the earthy smell is not obvious, but it’s easy to spot what reeks of decay: over half of the passengers—aspirational miners like yourself and similarly shackled—are starting to burst from the bloat of death.

Suddenly, someone shrieks out in terror. Turning towards the noise, you see one of your shackled neighbors struggling against a small black dragon! With a quick snap of its jaws, the dragon completely severs the man’s hand, ending his mining career in a single bite. As you struggle against your chain, several more of the vicious creatures approach.
OOC:
Escaping out of the chains requires either a DC 12 Strength or Agility check, or you can spend two rounds attacking the chains. May the dice gods bless you!

Bryson
Bryson awakes with a jump as the man’s scream fills the cabin below. Groggy, but heart pumping with sudden adrenaline, he takes in the scene. Out of the gloom, serpentine… reptilian figures begin to poke at those below.

To his side he sees the figure of Gryff the Elder. How had he ended up bound to the old moneylender? No matter…

Seeing the lizards come forth, the man rips his hands free of the rusted shackles, and clambers away.

Gryff the Elder
Gryff the Elder looks on as Bryson finally wakes. The moneylender nods to the baker, and raises his shackled hands to show their shared misery. The scream didn’t bother Gryff. He’d heard enough wailing and gnashing of teeth today to steel himself against it now.

Still, he’s not one to wait for death, and when Bryson lifts their shared beam to break free, Gryff watches on and copies the movement almost exactly. Once free, he steps towards the baker, away from the lizards, eager to have strength in numbers.

Eggo
Eggo sniffs deep, smelling every bit of the blood and bone and rot and bloat. And then the somewhat familiar scent of scaled bodies. Ones that walk on all fours, though. No lovers of the two-footed, and especially not a runt like Eggo. He coughs, in a hoarse, reptilian way, as the musty air seeps into him.

He feels them pressing in around him; licking their lips at the quick snack that he would make. He pulls against his chains, scratching his foot claws into the wet wood of the cabin below. He pulls again. Nothing. He sits there, chain clattering against the floor, announcing his helpless presence.

Merilda Hovelsworth
Merilda watches as the creature, Eggo, tries to free himself.

Pitiful, contemptible creature… she thinks dryly as the thing is unable to free himself. But not her. Her instructor had trained her for this very occasion.

Get captured and have father pay a ransom? No, no, no…

With a strained effort, she fights against the chains, until they finally give way and snap. She looks again at the pitiful thing, Eggo, wondering if she ought to help the thing. But the creatures are advancing.

Baldwin
Baldwin is first to awake in his row. Ah, the stage was set for his new role in this drama the playwrights called "Copper Miner!" They had convinced Baldwin this was the biggest part in dramatic history, and he knew it to be true because they wouldn't have asked Baldwin to perform any lesser role, for so great was his talent.

Looking about, he couldn't believe how realistic the set was. Those bodies even smelled dead! Very positive for a method actor like himself to get into character. He hadn't received a script yet (not that he remembered anyway) but this theatre seemed very experimental. Cutting edge.

When the black dragon appeared, tearing apart the screaming man, Baldwin winced. That actor was nearly as good as he! He almost believed he was being torn to pieces. Incredible realism.

This kind of avante garde theatre required him to think fast, and fortunately for Baldwin, this was his specialty. Improvisation was the best kind of visation, he always said. And so he took on the role of the young hero, at the start of his journey. What would a young hero do? Why, break free of these bonds! He flexed his manly muscles and mightily tugged at the chain restraining him, while rousing his fellow seat-mates.

"Rise and shine, my friends! Come with me if you want to live!"

Brother Longfoot
Longfoot awakens to Baldwin's loud voice and sound of the hapless victim victim being torn to pieces. No words come to mind, only a desperate, primal need to get as far away from here as possible. He turns to run but is snapped back by the chain, which he then begins to try frantically to wiggle free from.

"Fuckfuckfuck!" is mostly what is coming out of his mouth.

Sandra
Sandra wakes up in a similar desperate fashion. The Halfling latches on to the big, handsome Baldwin who is wrestling his chains. She follows his lead unquestioningly, and similarly writhes to get free.

"I do want to live!" she says, pathetically.

Joseph
Joseph wakes up in a similar manner to Longfoot and Sandra, and likewise panics. Breaking chains is a lot harder than breaking wood, so he hops on the bench and leans back, hoping his body weight will break the bolt out of the wooden floor.

"Hgggnnn! he goans.

Dengus the Ditch Digger
"Watchit!" Dengus cries when he's woken, and when he sees the sorry state they are all in. Bonds, bodies, and black wyrms, eating up the survivors! So much for a new start, then! The burly man twists and tries to break his chains as he shouts to everyone in the hold.

"Wake up, everyone! We're to be a feast for these scaly fiends! And why is my name in pink?!"

Belamina the Fortune Teller
Belamina the fortune teller wakes next -- and she shrieks when she sees what's happening! The shapely gypsy isn't made for this, any more than she's made for being a miner!

(And in fact, her intent is to be a camp follower, making her living by taking the valuable metals off those who find them in a whole variety of ways.)

Writhing, she tries to pull her wrists free of the manacles and slip away to the far end of the hold.

Crox the Avarian Spy
"What treachery is this?!" Crox cries as he gets to his clawed feet, his voice precise and strong. "We agreed to dive into the black earth and rob her of her gemstones and ore, not feed these drakelings with our feathers and flesh! Fight, everyone! Rise, slip your bonds, fight!"

His black eyes twitching, his wings fluttering, Crox tries, like Bela, to slip free of his iron manacles.

Eugene the Raving Lunatic
Eugene says nothing as he too rises. No scream escapes his lips, no words of worry or inspiration, no curses aimed at their captors or hungry attackers. Instead the man smiles, then begins to laugh. His disturbing cackle grows in intensity, rising from a a mirthful chuckle to great guffaws and peals of laughter that fill the room. "Dragons!" he shouts in glee. "They've given us dragons to ride!"

Wild-eyed as he continues to laugh, the man viciously tries to free himself from his bonds...

Gerdich

Without much haste, he tried clumsily to free himself from the chains.

Oh. Oh dear. Those are the worst rolls I've seen in a single post lol. Ok, first for posting your character art, you have to click on your character sheet under the dice roller. Then scroll all the way to the bottom of your character sheet where you see their art and click on the picture you want. Anything you type after that will show up next to their portrait. For dice rolling, click the box labeled "Check" next to the appropriate character and it will add the correct dice and labels for you. I'll include some screenshots.

Hm, maybe you can just save what you wrote, delete the post, then make a new post and copy over your dialogue lol? Also, for everyone, you are chained up and obviously have had all your possessions taken from you :( But the good news is they are stashed somewhere on the ship!

Ok pushing on. Also wow they all passed their luck checks! Everything is perfectly balanced lol.
The baby dragon-like creatures advance on the party as you struggle to get free. Three of the creatures attack some poor souls who hadn't even woken up. At least they die unaware as their torsos are chewed into and they quietly bleed out. The sounds of ripping flesh don't last long and they are drowned out by your shouts, screams, and the breaking of many rusty chains. Two more dark forms dart toward the elderly Gryff and the shapely Belamina.

OOC:
Only 1 PC took damage, 2 were attacked but one missed.
Anyone looking around sees that the carnage within the cramped berth is horrific. Some of the chained passengers are disemboweled, while others have bled out from a missing hand or foot. The entire area reeks of death and a strange, earthy musk.

Among the dead are two of the crew judging by their clothes and tattoos. Their faces are covered with cloth masks resembling large bird beaks. They are slumped on top of a coffin-sized box in the center of the berthing. Their hands are gripped to the lid of the box in their death pose, and their swords remain sheathed
at their sides.

A narrow ladder leads to the deck above. There are two large cargo hatches, one overhead and one in the deck. Only two lanterns are lit and hanging from hooks on two of the columns you were bound to leaving the far ends of the room shrouded in gloom and giving everyone nearby frighteningly distorted shadows.
OOC:
If you broke out of your chains those can be used as improvised weapons. You're in the hold of a ship so there are no windows or exterior lights. Its one giant room with several support pillars and one ladder.

Dengus the Ditch Digger
Releasing his own length of broken chain can be wielded like a weapon, Dengus snaps the linked metal at a scaly beast to keep it back as he takes up a position near the bottom of the ladder. He'll defend their only means of escape!

Belamina the Fortune Teller
The bloodied fortune teller spies that ladder at the same time, but, unarmed, her only thoughts are of escape. So she begins climbing as soon as there is room!

Crox the Avarian Spy
Trying and failing again to slip his bonds, Crox flutters his wings in agitation. Then, seeing the one woman lift a sword, he calls to her. "My chains! Strike them! Or give me a weapon so that I might! Do not let me die this way, bound in the bilge of a charnel ship!"

Eugene the Raving Lunatic
Eugene's laughter fades when the man sees the two dead sailors and the... is that a coffin?

"What's this?!" the man says with wide, excited eyes as he rushes to the box. "And what might be in here -- well let's find out!" And saying that, the lunatic tries to force open the lid!
OOC:
For clarity... Dengus is defending people ascending the ladder (hopefully providing an AC bonus to others or himself since he's not attacking), Belamina failed to find a weapon and is headed out of the hold as fast as she can, Crox is still trapped (failed a second time), and Eugene is opening that crate!

KCC, Eggo's strengths returns as the adrenaline pumps through him and he easily snaps the rusted chains binding him. Meanwhile Gryff the Elder and Bryson try to turn their shackles into weapons, swinging the chains at the creatures. Gryff lands a direct hit opening up a flap of skin on the creature's back. Bryson whips his chain too wide and it tangles around his ankle. He doesn't realize it when he flicks the chain, tripping himself. Merilda discovers two short swords (1d6 damage) on the bodies of the two dead pirates. She grabs one short sword and calls out the existence of the other for anyone to grab.

Len, Baldwin finally finds a weak link in his chains, focuses his efforts there, and is rewarded with a sharp metallic snap as his chain snaps. He grins in triumph. Brother Longfoot, Sandra and Joseph rush to the ladder and begin climbing.

Harrigan, Dengus and Eugene find a discarded hammer and adze used for repair work in the hold (1d4 damage). Crox's chains are newer and less rusty than most and he, unfortunately, continues to struggle against his bonds. Belamina makes for the ladder. Eugene becomes enthralled by the box and inspects it. The box is filled with soil, manure, and strange mushrooms growing out of it. The mushrooms seem to have a haze hanging about them with a distinct and unusual odor. Just smelling them seems to make Eugene start to feel sleepy again...

Ogion, Elix and Cerdan slip their bonds. Elix looks for a fight but Cerdan tries to get him to escape. Gerdich and ChristNar still struggle with their chains.

Merilda looks down at the thing, hiding her pity and disgust for the creature. When it offers an alliance, she stops for a moment, and then nods back. Harrigan, Belamina gets on the ladder right behind Sandra. Red light pours down from the open cargo hatch above. Dengus scores a massive hit against the creature, crushing its skull beneath the solid hammer.
Now that he's looking at it up close, it looks like a large stone-colored iguana or chameleon-type lizard rather than any kind of baby dragon or wyrmling. Crox once again unsuccessfully tries to escape his bonds. When he fails, he wonders if fate itself wants him dead. Eugene (if that even is his real name) has much better luck. Still shackled, Christnar uses his chains as a chomping bit, blocking the creature's mouth from its target. Gerdich isn't so lucky and gets a chunk of his abdomen torn away. Elix likewise proves less fortunate as he was so focused on following Cerdan he doesn't see the creature blindside him from behind a support pole. It takes a snap out of his calf. Crox dies as he lived, completely unlucky. A stony iguana-thing leaps at him and snaps off his arm at the shoulder. Blood fountains out and he dies soon from blood loss.

1 damage each to Elix and Gerdich, poor Crox never stood a chance. RIP our first PC casualty.

GERDICH, THE DIGGER

Gerdich tries again to get rid of his chains, laughing and without much enthusiasm.

She continues pulling on the chains, now with less conviction.

Screaming, horrified, she keeps trying to lead Elix towards the ladder.

Elix yells, after receiving the bite of one of the beasts. Finally, that makes him change his mind and follows Cerdan, stumbling.

Dengus the Ditch Digger
As Crox dies and Belamina ascends as fast as she can, Dengus fells one of the creatures -- but quickly realizes how futile fighting will be. There are too many of the things, and they are weak and ill-prepared for a fight. "Hurry!" he calls to those still below, as he grabs onto the ladder himself and starts climbing. "Flee while you can!"

Eugene the Raving Lunatic
"Ah! Shinies!" Eugene cries when he finds the golden coins. Away he tucks those as well, and he turns towards the ditchdigger when the man calls for a full retreat. "Yesss!" the wide-eyed man hisses as he lurches to his feet and heads for the ladder...
OOC:
Will post more (or not) depending on the outcomes of Eugene's rolls...
But as the lunatic turns to go, he sees that the two dead men share something -- both are wearing strange bird or beak masks of some kind! Are these meant to protect against the pungent smell of the mushrooms?! Eugene thinks so, and just like that he pulls one free and puts it on. Then he heads for the ladder, giggling behind his new mask.

Eugene sees the two dead sailors have the bird-shaped cloth masks over their heads and realizes it must be some kind of protection against the mushroom spores. Wearing it could protect him from their effects. Replacing the lid of the mushroom box would also stop the soporific effects of the 'shrooms.

Gerdich and Christnar both finally break from their chains, the rusty links snapping, leaving them with trails of chainlinks that could be used as improvised chain whips.

Belamina and Sandra make it up the ladder and out of the hold. Dengus reaches the ladder first with Cerdan right behind. There's not enough space for Elix yet so he waits at the foot of the ladder.

Gryff the Elder survives a moment longer than he expected, too. The ripping of flesh doesn’t come just yet, and so he takes the opportunity to wrap some more of the chain around his fist, and then slam the thing down into the lizard’s head.

Baldwin grips his mallet tight in his fists and raises it out of the midden heap from which he has claimed it. Quote:

"If I die, I will die fighting for the cause of the people. You can kill me, but ideas cannot die."
He approaches her and offers a strong arm to help her stand. "Your wisdom is only rivalled by your beauty! Come with me if you want to live!"

If she accepts, he will act as her guard. If her chains still need breaking, he will attempt that. Otherwise, he will guide her to the stairs and fend off attacks from dragons with his mind full of delusions of knights in shining armour and such.

Eyes scanning the dark space for any sign of attack, Merilda’s patience with the ladder begins to wane. She shunts the small lizardfolk with her toe, to get his attention.

"We go next!" she says coldly.

Eggo
The runt nods his head, understanding, before turning his eyes back to his watch. He had made the same calculation as the noble. One scaly hand grasps the first rung of the ladder, laying their claim to next ascent.

KCC, Merilda and Eggo are at the base of the ladder waiting for Dengus and Eugene to finish climbing and make room. Bryson and Gryff the Elder are also near the ladder being brave defenders as the others climb to safety.

Ok updated this post. For Cerdan's nat 20, next round 3 people will be able to get to the ladder. Everyone waiting to get to the ladder please make either an Agility roll or Strength roll, your choice, for securing a spot on the ladder. Joseph
After helping a few folks up the ladder, Longfoot and Joseph frantically begin searching for some kind of defensive advantage or hiding place. They exchange glances, recognizing some kindred spirit in each other. Wasting no time, they agree to work together, and invite the others to do the same. They move to try the doors under the poop deck, Longfoot taking the right and Joseph taking the left.

Merilda Hovelsworth
Merilda stands at the foot of the ladder, jostled about by the bodies around her. Her mind reached for two things. One, to slash all about her, and remind this dirty rabble that they ought not touch a person of her standing.

And second, the lessons she had been taught growing up. How the unwashed masses were panicky creatures, barely able to fend for themselves. That was the role of the Hovelsworth family, after all. To tend to the simple flock…

She pushes the nearest one off of her, and looks down at the lizard creature.

"Up." she says, commanding. And then she steps away from the ladder, and raises her sword to slash at a creature.

Brother Longfoot
Brother Longfoot looks about the opulent and spacious stateroom, and hopes the slime trail is leading OUT rather than IN. This is the kind of room I hoped to inhabit one day, once I become a member of the Order of Navigators. That goal seemed to be sailing away over the horizon, but he reminded himself that the world was full of danger, and if he were to succeed on this path, he would need to overcome this and many more challenges. If he balked now and the danger, he might as well never have dedicated his life to the study of navigation! With new resolve, he will head over to the writing desk and look for any information about the voyage or cargo that might be useful, being none to gentle with the desk if locks bar his way. He carefully avoids the slime at all costs, and keeps an eye on that mermaid rope thing.

Baldwin
Baldwin can't believe he's been actually cut! So, he chooses not to, which is a privilege granted to idiots all around the world. The ability to deny reality wasn't the sole province of idiots, but damn they were good at it, and Baldwin was one of the best.

Lost in his imagined world of stagecraft, he hoists his hammer and prepares for a mighty blow against the dragon that wounded him!

Sandra
Sandra nopes the fuck out of interacting the walking pigs, and races back down the stairs screaming "Murder pigs! Murder pigs! Up on the top deck!" She'll head for the open door of the galley that Joseph entered.

Joseph
Meanwhile, Joseph explores the galley with an eye for survival. He grab the most combat-effective looking kitchen knife, and then gets an idea. Fire might be a useful deterrent against those creatures, so he'll load some fuel in the oven to get a good roaring blaze going, with the intent on harnessing the fire in torches or something. At worse, he'll burn this whole fucking ship down. Those demonic creatures must not be allowed to live!

The creature struggles to breathe and eventually chokes on Gryff's fist. Merilda and Eggo both attempt attacks but the shadows and jostling of the people around them make their attacks ineffective.

Len, On top of the desk is an ocean map showing several islands and coastlines. Longfoot recognizes the names of Alviz (your island home) as well as Lys (your destination). The desk drawer is unlocked. Joseph opens it and a needle shoots out of the keyhole! In the room next door, Joseph grabs a sharp kitchen knife (1d4 dmg) and begins stoking a fire. It will take a minute to get going. Meanwhile before Sandra can mount the stairs she gets an odd feeling of being watched. Turning around she sees three pigs have stood upright on hind legs, their beady eyes trained on her. She is being cornered against the railing. Down below, Baldwin performs as well as he acts! His hammer blow strikes true. He smashes the head of the creature which explodes like an overripe melon. It is dead instantly.

Harrigan, Up on deck Belamina grabs a sailor's sword (1d6 dmg). After she asks about the animals, she sees in horror as three pigs have stood upright on their hindlegs and are advancing on poor Sandra. On the ladder Dengus shouts down to Eugene as he climbs out of the hold and arrives on deck. Down below Eugene elbows the others with force and secures himself the first place in line to begin climbing the ladder.

ogion, Gerdich risks his life to follow after Elix and pull him from the creature's clutches and back towards the ladder. Both of them make it to the ladder and begin climbing. "Langria’s frozen teats! The gods have forsaken us! These pigs walk like men, and one of them just burned up the halfling like she was a wee piece a dried moss!"

One charges Cerdan who is standing at the top in an attempt to knock her back down the hole and into the hold. The other charges Dengus in an attempt to knock him overboard.

1 damage each to Dengus and Cerdan. DC 8 Reflex to avoid being knocked over the edge for Dengus. Cerdan would get one too but she's only got 1 HP which means she's unconscious. Need everyone on the ladder to make a DC 10 Reflex save to avoid being hit by Cerdan's falling body. That's Eugene, Elix, and Gerdich. A fail means you take 1 damage from, which is cumulative to how many people above you on the ladder failed. If anyone fails there's a chance it saves Cerdan from instant death.

"One, two…" she readies her blade.

Baldwin

Brother Longfoot
Brother Longfoot winches as the dart strikes his groin. Sweating terribly, he struggles to extract the metal spine. Once free, he will rummage through the desk to see if the discovery will be worth his pain.

Joseph
Joseph tries to find a way to bar the door to the kitchen as he waits for the fires to gain their full flame.

KCC, Bryson and Merilda strike true and kill one while injuring another, which Baldwin finishes off soon after. Eggo and Gryff find less success but thankfully don't come to any harm.

Len, Baldwin's mojo is flowing as he crushes his second creature to death. His hammer is like a holy weapon in his hands. Joseph barricades the door and begins building up the fire. Brother Longfoot painfully removes the needle from his genitals. Tossing it aside he rummages through the desk. Inside he finds a spyglass, a purse containing 15 gold pieces, and the Captain's Log.
OOC:
It will take 6 rounds to get the fire finished unattended, 4 rounds if you tend to it. You are free to search the room while the fire is growing. Give me an Int check if you do. Or you can just stick with the fire to get it done faster.
@Harrigan, you are up as well. Dengus and Belinda are in melee range with 2 of the pigs. Eugene just reached the top of the ladder when suddenly the dancer's body gets knocked through the hatch, crashing into Eugene, who loses his grip and crashes into Gerdich, who crashes into Elix. You all hit the deck in one mass of bodies.

ogion, Cerdan is hit hard right in the ribs from the charging demon pig and knocked down the ladder. Fortunately for her, and unfortunately for the others on the ladder, she crashes into some of them, sending them all falling own, but it breaks her fall. She has several cracked ribs for sure but is clinging on to life. Gerdich and Elix were on the ladder as Cerdan falls down, crashing into them and sending them falling to collapse in a large pile.
OOC:

On the main deck, Belamina swings and catches the pig across its throat. Blood fountains out over the wooden deck and its dead almost as soon as it hits the floor. Dengus lashes out with his sword and catches the second pig across its chest, carving off a large chunk of bacon. It squeals in pain and anger and blood flows down its pink body. Its eyes flare and it attempts to knock Dengus overboard again. Dengus retreats a few steps up the stairs and the creature crashes into the stairs. The third pig makes its way across the deck to get ready to attack.

In the galley, Joseph continues to stoke the fire. Strangely though, he noticed the spilled blood starts to attract coal dust like iron fillings to a magnet.

Belamina the Fortune Teller
Moving back down the stairs against her better judgement, the bloodied sword awkward in both hands, Belamina swings the thing as hard as she can, straight towards the wounded pig-man!
Dengus the Ditch Digger
"No, woman! No!" Dengus cries as the gypsy appears at his side, brandishing her weapon ineffectually. "Get up to the damn upper deck! Get to safety!" He cries as he slashes again with his own sword.

[ +- ] Baldwin
Harrigan, Eugene is luckily cushioned somewhat in the long fall into the cargo hold below. He is terribly sore and will have bruises if not some chipped bones to show for this fall. Determinedly he rises and begins his climb again. Up top, Belamina and Dengus fight off the pigs but fail to harm either of them.

ogion, Cerdan, Elix, and Gerdich all disentangle themselves from the heap they fell into with groans and winces. All are alive but badly battered. Bruised and aching, they dust themselves off and prepare to climb up once again. Christnar waits for the others before ascending herself.
OOC:

In through the window in the galley comes crawling a lizard-like creature that resembles something of the ones below deck but larger and with a strange tail! It crawls along the inner wall and ceiling and lunges at Joseph! It grabs on to his back and begins chomping! As the light begins to fade, Joseph feels the creatures mouth go for his the upper portion of his abdomen, ripping through the muscle, and tearing out his liver. The last thing Joseph sees is it stuff his large red liver into a cheek pouch and then climb back out the window.

On the main deck, each pig attacks Belamina and Dingus with their thick tusks. The pigs smell like rotten bacon and sulfur as they get close.

Miss on Dengus, 3 damage to Joseph, 2 damage to Belamina. RIP Joseph. Belamina is down but gets her Luck roll. Narrate the result after you roll.

From the crow's nest, Eugene has a slightly better view of his immediate surroundings, but it doesn't help much for things in the distance. If only he had a spyglass...

Eggo listens at the other two doors under the fo'c'sle and hears nothing but silence.

Baldwin returns to the cargo hold but doesn't find anything useful. He sees a miasma around the fungus box and thinks if he gets too close he'll probably be rendered unconscious again.

Brother Longfoot reads another entry in the captain's log: "Alkar’s stones! Mayhem during the ceremony! Tirrem had sacrificed half of the cargo with the Mael Bennique and The Gatherer had begun to take shape. All thought the sacrifice would be sufficient to please the Stony One, but His shape erupted in exploding rock! Meanwhile, Baldwin returns from below deck without additional armaments. He then hears Bryson's protests about Gryff's fighting ability.

"Able or not, the fight will come. If we stay still, we are just sheep awaiting slaughter. We must become the wolves if we want to survive! Fortune favours the BOLD!"

Brother Longfoot catches sight of the broken lamp hanging from the main mast and gets an idea of how to signal the ship. Light! He remembers seeing some intact lamps hanging from some of the poles down in the cargo hold where he woke up.
Baldwin enters the galley and sees two corpses, one a member of the crew of the Nostro, and the other is poor Joseph. Both are covered in blood and have holes in their abdomens. A trail of blood droplets leads out of the porthole. A fire is stoked in the oven, and the room is warm with dancing firelight. A slime trail is also present, with coal dust seemingly attracted to it like iron shavings to a magnet.
Dengus opens the port-side door (or was it starboard?). This stateroom has a large table, a desk, and a shelf with several stoppered jars. Next to the large table is a smaller table with surgical equipment and a large book. Hanging by a hook over the table is an unlit lantern.

On the large table is the exposed body of a young male sailor. Someone has taken forceps and pulled back the flesh of its midsection as part of a post-mortem examination. The corpse bears a savage wound in its abdomen as well as many lacerations on the arms, face, and neck. The corpse has one eye open that leers at you disturbingly.

The vials each contain a medicinal herb, root, leaf, or flower. There is a label on each bottle but the scawl is nonsense to him.

Eugene is more accurate than he knows! As he looks down the rigging toward where Brother Longfoot is climbing, he sees a dark-grey reptilian creature clamber over the edge of the boat, directly behind the half-demon Elix near the mast to the crow's nest. OOC:
Oh sorry, yes totally fine! The fire has been stoked enough and torch materials are readily available! Eugene can see everyone on deck from the crow's nest, no enemies in sight. I'll describe what you can see on the poop deck and fo'c'sle as well.
On the fo’c’sle, a peculiar dog-like humanoid figure has been carved into the foremast. The creature is approximately 2-feet tall, has a canine face, stands up-right like a halfling, but has webbed hands and feet. It is dressed in traditional sailor’s attire and is holding a hammer and smoking a pipe. It appears to be smiling cheerfully.

On the poop deck, you’re alarmed to find the ship’s wheel has been splintered to pieces. So now, in addition to all the other hardships you’ve endured, you’re also left wondering how you will possibly steer the ship? Near the splintered ruins of the ship’s wheel is a small locker.
Belamina reads another entry in the log: "Three more murders! Entrails removed just like with McCann. The crew fear we may have a reef-wraith on board and are now singing to the Klabautermann for protection from dawn to dusk. I brook none of this nonsense. The culprit is a man and we shall unveil the fiend! Doubling the watch. Tempted to light the lanterns at night despite the Ibis risk."
Bryson, Gryff, and Dengus look in as the baker opens the door. Entering this large stateroom, you feel like you’ve stepped off the ship and into a cave. The walls have been adorned with clay and rock in such a meticulous and ingenious manner, the cabin resembles an underground cavern.

On one side of the "cavern" is a small sitting ledge with an open scroll and candle. Laying on the floor is Dahut! You recognize her from your farewell dinner with Captain de Keradel the night before departing on your voyage. Dahut’s arms are crossed over her chest and she’s holding an ornate rock pick, but both she and the tool are transformed! Dahut’s flesh is in a state of petrification, half flesh and half stone. It’s as if she’s been gazed upon by a basilisk!

Dengus the Ditch Digger
Dengus makes his way carefully into the cavern-room after the door is opened, and the bizarre scene revealed. Sword in hand, he kneels near Dahut. "Captain de Keradel's consort, wasn't she?" he asks the others. Gesturing to the scroll near the candle, he hopes one of the others knows how to read.

"What's it say? That woman Belamina knows how to read, if she's needed."

Diverting his hand instead, the baker boy picks up the pick and feels it’s weight for swinging!

Bryson
"What happened her, then? Magic?"
Jan 1, 2023 1:01 pm
Bryson attempts to pick up the pick but it is mid-transformation into stone along with the body. As Dengus looks closely, he can see the stone ever so slowly growing on her body as its slowly transformed. You see no injuries and judging from the scroll that is open you conclude it is the work of magic. Unlike the other rooms there is no destruction or blood.
Belamina reads another entry: "Four more taken tonight! Crew on double shifts. Some of the crew have been heard whispering ‘skrag’."
The narrow ladder from the main deck descends into the ship’s cargo hold. The area is dark and cramped, and smells of yeast, rot, and whale oil. The entire area is crowded with crates and barrels carefully stacked and tied together. Along the bulkheads of the ship, tied down with numerous ropes and elaborate knots, are several masts, sails and other items in order to repair the ship while at sea.

Both fore and aft, you see many posts with rows of hammocks fastened between them. The crew’s lockers are neatly stacked against the port and starboard bulkheads. Five unlit lanterns sway over the bunks.

Several corpses of sailors lie rotting on the deck. Like the others you’ve seen, they are bloated and rancid, and appear to have been disemboweled. Rats feeding on the corpse’s extremities scurry away as you approach.

Exits include a ladder leading upwards, the cargo hatch overhead, and a smaller closed hatch in the deck.

The scroll Belamina reads is a spell called "Sleeping Stone." It puts the caster in a sleep-state while turning their body to stone to protect it. The spell is set to end when a pre-determined interrupt condition is said during the casting. Along with instructions for casting, it also describes how to reverse it before the interrupt condition is met. Two methods are detailed: one is the use of a dispel magic spell, and the other is through a ritual called "blood from a stone" where someone must draw a few drops of blood from the affected caster's heart before it turns to stone.
Brother Longfoot sings to the Klabauterman. There is no immediate response, but he hears an answering song blow through the rigging on the ship. It seems to be a sign of acknowledgement.
As Bryson, Eggo, and Merilda start searching through the expertly stacked and packed cargo, Bryson unwittingly unties a group of barrels that begin crashing down.

Belamina the Fortune Teller
Moving into the room where the woman lies in repose, half-transformed to stone, Belamina relates to anyone listening what she learns from the scroll.

"This is Dahut here on the floor!" the dark-haired fortune teller says, "just as I foretold! And this parchment here, this scroll -- it is the very magical spell which put her there, slowly to petrify and turn to cold stone! For her protection or for some evil intent, she has been ensorcelled!"

She taps the scroll. "The spell will end when some condition is met, but we have no way of knowing what this condition might be!" Kneeling, Belamina examines Dahut carefully, grazing the skin on the other woman's cheek and throat with her fingertips. Eggo and Merilda both dive out of the way of the barrels, as one takes the baker boy in the head. It’s apparent that there’s nothing to be done for him. They look down at him a moment, not undisturbed by the act… and yet they turn back to their work a moment later, once the boy has departed this plane. There’d be time for grappling with what happened here later!

Dengus searches the room but finds no other clues. Eugene finds an assortmant of personal items but only one able to draw blood from the heart: a tattooing needle.
Down below, Eggo finds two spare anchors while Merilda finds sail cloth.
Baldwin tries to bravely draw out the creature but gets no response. He thinks he hears thumping on the outer hull, almost like footsteps. But maybe it was a shark or debris in the water.

He withdraws the needle and squirts out some of the blood into the bowl. Chanting the words on the scroll, Dahut's eyes snap open and she takes a deep, shaking breath. Once on course toward the other ship, Brother Longfoot will attempt to lash the helm with rope in an attempt to keep the ship on course with him absent. Then he'll head down, and run into Baldwin, now covered in streaks of dragon's blood.

"Brother Longfoot! It is time to put an end to this. Let us descend to the very bottom of the ship. There we will find our victory and our salvation!"

"It seems like as good a place to be as any on this cursed ship. Let's go - but please, let's be quiet about it?"
OOC:
Baldwin and Longfoot will go to the last unexplored level of the ship, and anyone who wants to come along are welcome!
OOC:
My two characters are heading
Jan 17, 2023 6:50 am
Brother Longfoot steers directly into the oncoming ship and ties the wheel in place to keep the course. He judges they should meet with the other ship in an hour or less.

The ladder leading down into the bilge leads to a platform big enough to hold about three people and rests only a few inches higher than the bilgewater. The rank water is a ripe mixture of sea water polluted with the filth of sailors who, for weeks now, have used this area as a latrine.

Towards the aft, a tube descends from the deck above and into the water. Towards the fore of the ship, protruding through the water are four large, veiny leather sacks covered in mucous. You nervously intuit that these may be some sort of unholy, or unearthly, eggs.

As you examine the sacks, a scratching and clawing sound can be heard originating from the bottom of the ship. It is the unnerving sound of someone, or something, trying to claw its way through the hull.
Everyone else barricades themselves in Dahut's room. It is the cleanest since there are no dead bodies or spilled blood everywhere, and they can try to protect her here. Dahut asks for some water and then rests as her body begins its long recovery from the spell, and the hole in her chest.
Jan 18, 2023 12:46 am
"Oh gods, this is no good," whispers Longfoot. "If we find a way to pierce the unhatched eggs we can return, but for now we can gain nothing from this." He thinks about capturing the eggs to use as hostages but there was no guarantee the Beast was intelligent enough to understand.

Baldwin hears the Beast crawling along the hull and resists the urge to scream out a challenge. He has bought into Longfoot's plan to use subterfuge and surprise - two things that Baldwin obviously specializes in!
OOC:
The ladder that leads in here, can it be removed? And what kind of hatch leads into this space? A hole in the floor kind of deal? Does it have a door that can be closed?
Jan 18, 2023 7:19 am
OOC:
The ladder can be broken but otherwise its built into the ship. There's no hatch but you could improvise something to cover it like a crate. The ladder extends from the main deck all the way down here in its own shaft.
Jan 18, 2023 8:16 pm
Destroying the ladder seems too time-consuming and would create too much noise, so Brother Longfoot figures it will be sufficient to block things from coming up the ladder. He's concerned about those eggs hatching, and little monsters running all over the ship. He hooks Baldwin into helping, and they shove a dead body down the hatch into the bilge, hoping that might satisfy newly hatched monsters for a time. Then, they use sailcloth and barrels to stuff the hatch to the bilge, making it as tight as possible.

If this is successful, they'll climb up to the main deck. They'll head to the galley to fetch knives, preferably serrated ones. Then, they'll cut the rigging that lead up to the crow's nest at the base and climb up the loose rigging. Then they'll haul up the loose rigging up to the crow's nest and wait.
OOC:
A lot of "ifs" here. It is presented as 'if all goes well, here's what they do' but please feel free to interrupt my plan and I'll retcon it.

The Ibis man, dressed in a red and white nautical outfit with gold trim, nods and places a ten-foot plank between the boats. "You'll have to move quickly; your ship seems to be taking on water." Indeed, the railing height difference between the two boats is already two feet and your ship is starting to list to starboard, making the gangplank ever more unstable.
Inside the cabin, Dahut shakes her head. She looks down at her feet and can only wiggle a few stony toes. While the spell has been broken, it will still take time for the effects to wear off. Edit -- and Bela burns 4 to succeed at her Agility check. So editing above.

OOC:
Bela has 7 Luck and only needs to burn 4 to succeed on the first Agility check and then the Reflex save would be unnecessary.

Right you are! Alright, she'll burn four luck and make that first agility roll. I presume this means she's fine, but Dengus falls and catches himself. What happens to Dahut?

Edited above to reflect luck spending.

Merilda Hovelsworth
"Make it quick!" Merilda orders as she starts to dance on the spot, momentarily escalating from the heat reaching the deck.

OOC:
Luck check for Dahut.
Dahut's deity was watching over her as Dengus slipped she was lucky enough to be directly over the planks and fell straight down, landing straight on her back, perfectly balanced. After Dengus recovers, he and Belamina finish crossing with Dahut in tow.

Merilda likewise makes her way across but another section splintered under her feet. She does a graceful pirouette to keep her balance. She finishes crossing and lands lightly on the other ship.

Haha thanks, it was fun to write! Longfoot is up, DC is now 14, followed by Baldwin with DC 16. You are free to think of another way to cross!

Brother Longfoot
Brother Longfoot is rather spry - one of the things the Order of Navigators noted during his initiation test. So, it is with confidence he leaps onto the shifting gang plank!
OOC:
Longfoot has 14 luck points left to spend, so he blows 8 to get that 6 up to a 14!
Although the rocking motion of the ships nearly sends him into the drink, Baldwin grabs the plank and stabilizes it! Longfoot looks back to him, and salutes him, then makes the rest of the way with haste!

Was this adventuring life more than he bargained for! His whole life, he yearned to explore beyond the horizon. But even now that he had seen the face of true evil, he wasn't the slightest bit deterred. The horizon called ever still.

Baldwin
Baldwin stood up on the rail, satisfied. He had saved everybody! Rightfully, as the hero of this story, he should be last to step foot off the ship. He turned, to see the flames rising on near the back of the ship. This rotten ship was both sinking and burning, and he knew he had gotten the best of the beast that had killed so many of them.
OOC:
Burning 8 luck points to succeed, leaving Baldwin with 3/14
Cracking his knuckles he climbed onto the plank to finish his triumphant journey, but the plank slips! But there, on the other side, Brother Longfoot returns the favour and steadies it for him. What a good sidekick. He crosses, head high, and his mighty, dragon-slaying mallet close at hand.

Baldwin makes it to the other side with pomp and grandeur, only to hear a sound behind him. "Death to hierarchies!" Christnar the anarchist says as her battle cry. She grabs a length of rope she had stashed in the crow's nest and swings like a monkey onto the Ibis ship. Sadly the rope snaps mid-swing and she gives a panicked cry as she slams into the crossing plank, snapping it in half, and splashing down into the water. A moment later you see a shark's fin circle where she splashed down and the water blooms red.
OOC:
Well I was hoping one of ogion's characters would make it but the dice have spoken lol.

Rolls

Funnel Party: Agility - Check - (1d20-1)

(9) - 1 = 8

Funnel Party: Agility - Save - (Ref1d20-1)

(1) - 1 = 0

With the plank removed by Christnar's tumble to her doom, nothing is keeping the ship delayed and the Ibis ship unfurls its sails and sets course for land. The captain interviews you to get your story and offers free room and board until you make landfall in about three days' time because of your tragic encounter. Stone Dahut spends the voyage recovering in the surgeon's quarters. If anyone visits her, she says she is retiring from being a cultist and renounced her dark god. She gives away her magic weapon to anyone who wants it.

On the last night of the voyage, you are all down sleeping in the cargo quarters in impromptu hammocks made from extra rigging and sails. You are asleep in the dead of night when you hear a thump. Groggily you think you hit something in the water, maybe a piece of floating detritus, but then it comes again.
Thump. THUMP.

It becomes rhythmic. Insistent.

Thump. THUMP! CRACK!

The end...?
