"We have the games at lunch I think, right? But yeah, that sounds like a good plan. I love the river here. It's really peaceful. But I have to run home first though. I don't ... you know ... have it on me. You'll like it. It's mellow. So it's a date then?"

Gah!

She didn't mean to say date and all the connotations it implied, but it slipped out and hung in the air like a big awkward question mark.

Freddie blinks at her but his face lights up. "You're on, it's a date!" She's into me. I could ask her to the dance so I can meet up with Priya, if Clutch comes through.

"Do we have time to get to that Vietnamese place you mentioned and get back in time for the rest of lunch? You've been holding out on me Freddie. I love Vietnamese food. I didn't think there would be one here in this small town. That's great!"

Emily didn't mind Vietnamese food but she didn't love it. She had no idea who was doing the talking. I mean the words were coming out of her mouth but they weren't really hers.

"Damn, no. Shit, I was really set on that. After school then, good munchy food. I brought a game to try, it's called Carcassone. Should be savage. I think you try and kill the pope."

His stomach revolts in the change in plans and the thought that if they were late for lunch they might have to eat that macaroni war crime.

"Fred! Yoooo Freddie!" Tyke Tailor says as he spots his teammate and that mousy girl he sometimes hangs out with. Clutch isn't aware that he's interrupting a bit of a moment between the pair, nor that he's just cut off Lily and Zach on their way to the table.

"Dude! DOOD. I talked to Priya. She is totally going to the Homecoming dance, and she totally doesn't have a date! I mean, she does... but it's Cameron Bakshu. Her chubby gal-pal, man! They're like just going as friends. Door is wiiiiiiide open, Brah!"

Fred high fives Clutch, and says, "You're the bomb, dude, you're just..." he begins his trademark chant, "... so ... Clutch!" He laughs, and then his neck goes super hard and stiff. "Later dude!" He almost doesn't want to look, but has to look at Emily.

He shrugs, and says, "I have a hard time letting go. Loyalty is a virtue, right? Right?"

Emily thinks Freddie is cute in a goofy sort of way and not at all stuck up like a lot of the kids from her old school. She's also glad he doesn't think she's a dork with her silly date comment.

"Um, yeah, sure. Loyalty." She tries hard not to make it obvious that she's a little uncomfortable with that concept.

"Priya? Nah, she's off limits. I'm hoping to dance with her though. Why, were you going to ask her out? Hey that would be great. You should do that. Just, if you're okay and know that I'm going to horn in on her." Fred isn't sure what Zach is going on about. He had made that "she's cute" comment about Priya so he was probably just sweet on her.

"Me? What, no," Zach replies. "No, I'm going with Emily, remember?"

He hesitates a moment, letting his eyes move around the cafeteria in search of someone. "I was actually going to ask you something." He pauses when he realizes that might sound like he wants to ask Freddie out. I wish, he thinks.
"You know my sister, Rose?" Zach asks, pointing her out at a table across the room where she's sitting with some of her friends. "I was wondering... She's definitely going to show up with some jock from our year and, well, I would really prefer that to be you rather than, say, Banks. Someone who would treat her like a gentleman." He shrugs. "I don't know. Probably a lot to ask. You're cute enough that you must have girls lining up to go with you."

Lily sees Wendy, tray in hand, and waves her over. She subtly puts a finger gun to her head, and pulls the trigger, as Clutch and the boys go about their business.

"Ugh… that looks grim." she says, eyeing the tray of lunch food.

"And they never think about anything else." she says, rolling her eyes.

Lily and Wendy had agreed to be ‘dates’ for the Homecoming dance. There was year book stuff to get done, and the following week promised to be a big one for the paper. They’d even gone ‘dress shopping’ together.

Smart casual…

Taking Wendy by the arm, Lily plops down beside Emily.

"So what were you two talking about?" she says, innocently enough.

Freddie stops and looks at Zach? "Seriously dude? Your sister?" He looks at the girl but wonders what the catch is.

"Why do you think I'm a gentleman? You could be setting her up with bae who's crae crae." He chuckles and shows Zach the box. "Carcasonne! Been on my shelf for years but no one want to play it."

"Dancing with my sister," Zach points out seriously. "Nothing more." He then shrugs. "I just trust you more than most of the other guys she might be interested in going out with. Would I prefer if she just stayed home or went with one of her girls? Obviously. But that's not going to happen."

He takes the box from Freddie and opens it, digging around for the instructions. "As I said, just a thought."

Across the lunchroom, Rose can feel her brother's eyes on her, and she offers him a smile and the finger without thinking twice about it. Her friends laugh, but they all straighten up when Fred looks over as well... making all the smiles turn prettier.

Clutch

"Zach's sis is okay!" Clutch comments. "Might make Priya pretty jelly..."

Mr. Gromn

Across the cafeteria, the sound of banging, of a hammer or pipe pounding on the old heating registers sounds throughout the room. Mr. Gromn, the school's main janitor, is beating on the heating system. It's been on all morning, making the whole building unpleasantly warm.

Emily listens to the group discussion intently but tries to let on that she is only sort of paying attention. She had forgotten that she agreed to go to the dance with Zach.

When did they decide that? She really needed to lay off the pot. It was doing a number on her memory. There was literature to support that but she had chosen that strain for other reasons and had pooh-poohed the memory side effects. Between the math test and now the dance date something had to change.

Meanwhile, as much as she was used to crude boys, she was in no mood for Clutch. He was so obnoxious.

"Let's try this game, Freddie .. Carca whatee now? I'll play. Never heard of it."

Then Lilly pokes her nose in and Emily responds. "Oh not much. We were going to get Vietnamese but we ran out of time. So who wants to play?"

Lily gives Wendy a knowing look, and then responds to Emily:

"Oh yeah! That would have been nice!"

Then she turns to Wendy more fully and brings her two index fingers together at a point.

"Did you know?" she mouths, silently.

Then she snaps back around:

"Yeah, let’s play! We’re running out of time!"

Setting up the board with their bowls of soylent macaroni, Freddie explains the rules wrong, but Zach is there to actually read them. "Oh yeah, that's right," he says about four times.

"So you all have dates for Homecoming? I ain't got but shit, since Priya's parents caught us out by the ... well, they're not very pleased with me."

Wendy Lin

Wendy's eyes go from Lily to Emily, from Emily to Fred, and from Fred back to Lily. No, she answers with a subtle shake of her head. Lin is a good non-verbal communicator. She and her bestie can often make whole plans for after class with just a series of exchanged looks.

There's more banging and clanging from the work that the janitor is doing while the kids set up the game and get started, but then Zach sees it. Rose is inbound!

Rose Tidwell

"Hey bro," the short-haired brunette says as she comes close. She's wearing a spaghetti-strapped top, almost, it seems, to show Zach that she can. Sometimes the siblings are supportive of one another, and sometimes... well, they just aren't. "Little hot in here for a hoodie, ain't it? They say there's something wrong with the heat. Playing your little game or whatever, I see. Cool, cool. How was your test?"

Then turning to Fred, barely allowing Zach time to respond, Rose adds, "And hey, who's your friend? Are you going to introduce us or what?"

"You know how it is," Zach replies, acting cool despite his cheeks turning red at her calling out his hoodie. "I take this thing off, suddenly every girl in school is drooling all over me. Hard to get anything done that way."

When Rose turns to Fred, Zach throws the boy a look as well, giving him a smile and a nod in Rose' direction when she can't see him. "That guy's a jerk and definitely nobody you should want to know, Rosie," Zach then says as if trying to get rid of her. If he displayed any sign to his sister that he'd approve of her and Fred, she would lose all interest. "Go back to the kiddie table and let the grown-ups talk, alright?"
