Boseman High School Shenanigans: Episode 1

Zach turns his eyes to the two girls and looks them over curiously for a moment at that comment but then turns back to the conversation with Freddie and Rose without commenting.

"Freddie's right. The macaroni sucks." Emily lets the rubbery macaroni slide off her fork back onto the plate as she examines it with her head leaning slightly to the side as if it is a science experiment while she listens to the rules of the new game. They confuse her at first because of Freddie being all wrong but eventually, she gets them.

"You got caught? Doing what exactly? Inquiring minds wanna know, Freddie." Emily wears a shit-eating grin on her face. Wasn't teasing the way to a guy's heart along with a good punch on the arm? She also notices Zach's eyes wander to the other girls and wonders if she can get out of the dance date and try to go with Freddie instead. It was not that she didn't like Zach because she really did but Freddie was kind of a bad boy or pretended to be one and she liked that being an instigator herself.

"Hi Rose. Wow you are a rose,, aren't you. Are you sure you're related to Zach? I'm glad to see that the hoodie thing isn't a family uniform, I think you look nice without it." He lets that awkward gem dangle a little.

"Hey, Rose, I've got a question I've been mulling over. Kind of private through. Do you have time after school for a bit of a head to head?" He gives his best charming smile.

He is ignoring Emily'a question for a better moment.

Emily's brow furrows as she becomes briefly mystified. "Uh Freddie, weren't we planning to ... um ... study after school down by the river? Biology of estuarine diversity or something?"

Too late she realized they needed to be near an ocean as well as a river to be a proper estuarine environment but she hoped none of the kids knew that. She was surprised and maybe even a little hurt that he had forgotten their date already, or was he really just a cad? And did she sound like a total nerd with her estuarine biology? She wanted to sell to the rest of the kids too but this was kind of an alone thing, or so she had hoped.

Lily gives Wendy a sad face, and puppy dog eyes on Emily’s behalf. There’s a look between the two for a second as they do some practiced telepathy.

"Wendy and I are hanging out at the paper after school. If… if you need a study partner. Partners." she says, exaggerating the ‘s’.

Freddie nods at Emily, waiting for Rose to agree to the meet up. "And that will be great! All those estuaries to memorize, over vietnamese subs."

Three's a crowd. Emily heaves a mental sigh but on the other hand, it's business and Freddie was either a dummy or just not interested in her. But hell, they'd have fun and get high, munching on subs.

Rose Tidwell

"Rude!" Rose says to her brother when he basically tells her to run along, then she quiets for a moment as a bunch of other chatter flits this way and that. Then Fred -- OMG Fred asks her to meet after school?!

"Um... yeah!" she says quickly, but then her eyes are on Zach and she draws him close for an urgent whisper. "Can you just tell dad I'll find my own way home? That I'm staying after for a teacher meeting?"

Before Zach can do much more than nod or shake his head, there's talk of this other girl coming, and Rose narrows her eyes slightly at Emily. The pot girl.

"Oh. So three of us? What's it... what's up?" she asks Freddie, ignoring Lily, who is now going on about another after-school meeting.

Mr. Gromn

"Listen Romero, it can't be fixed here!" Mr. Gromn shouts to himself after a final crash scares half the lunchroom. Looking thoughtful for a moment after gathering up his tools, he snaps his fingers and heads out of the cafeteria, muttering to himself about how he might know what the problem is.

"And why would I do that?" Zach challenges his little sister with a huge grin. "Lie for you, I mean. What's in it for me?"

He then also looks confused between Emily and Freddie. "Yeah, what the hell are you playing at, Solomon?" he asks the boy. Then, leaning conspiratorially towards Rose, he stage-whispers, "See, told you he's a weirdo."

Lily shrugs, unperturbed by Emily’s shaky committal in response to Lily’s gesture to not have her swinging in the wind in front of everyone.

"Well, thats where we’ll be."

She tosses her game pieces back into the box, as they’re clearly not actually going to get to this today, and picks at Wendy’s tray.

"Gross." she laments.

Emily's glare meets Rose's but rather than stare daggers at here she offers a weak smile and lightens up on the daggers. She's new and has to fit in or life here will be miserable.

Suck it up buttercup, her dad used to say and that phrase crossed her mind now.

"We are studying by the river. You guys can go ahead after school and I'll stop home first or you can come with."

Freddie is suddenly caught between a rock and a hard place, and how did this happen? No wing man. Norm would have his back, rather than these sharks.

"It won't be long, Rose, just a few minutes to talk before you slap me and we all laugh and cry and hug and grow. Emily and I do have to study this afternoon, and I have to drive my sisters home first anyway."

He looks at Lily, watching her put the pieces away. He can't blame her, and offers her an understanding half smile.

Wendy smacks Lily's hand away from her food, then they begin a quiet fork duel while Rose just looks puzzled.

Rose Tidwell

"What?" she simply says, wrinkling her nose a little as she looks at her brother. Is she actually looking to him for support? Maybe.

"The river," she says, slightly questioningly. "I don't have a car. I mean I just got my license. But I'd need a ride if we're going there. But why are we going there? So... we can talk for a few minutes?"

Wendy Lin

There's the sound of an entire box full of board game contents being accidentally elbowed from the table, and suddenly Carcassonne is allll over the floor.

"Ep!" Wendy manages, the instant after she mistakenly knocks the box from the table. She was defending a particularly deft fork-thrust from Lily and spazzed out for a moment. "Sorry!"

Getting up and kneeling down, she starts collecting all the pieces off the gross cafeteria floor.

Clutch

"Brah, I gotta bounce. Text later," Clutch suddenly says, heading off before he can be pressed into clean-up service.

Emily wonders if Rose is deaf as she already mentioned they were going to be studying.

"Some studying for an estuarine project, Rose. It might be longer than a few minutes though. You might get bored."

Then the game lands on the floor and Emily squats down to help pick up the pieces. Shaking her head at Clutch for being such a dufus with his hip lingo and not offering to help, she decides he's an idiot not worthy of any more attention.

"Look, you want to talk to my little sister, fine," Zach says to Freddie. If Rose is feeling weird about that, of course he'll support her. She's his sister after all, even if she's a bit of a pain in the ass. "But you don't need to drag her to some river for it. There's enough quiet corners in the school to exchange a handful of sentences."

When the game lands on the floor, Zach sighs. He throws Rose another look, then ducks under the table to help with picking the pieces back up.

"Hey!" Lily exclaims, laughing, as Wendy slaps away her hand.

"I didn’t know you’d defend some rubbery macaroni with your life!" she continues, stabbing at the stuff with the spare utensils.

And then the pieces are everywhere. A mocking cheer goes up from the surrounding tables.

And then Lily is on the ground with Wendy, picking up slightly sticky pieces; having to really pry some off the floor with her nail. Her hands come back all gunky!

"Looks about as good as that Macaroni up there!" she says, looking at her hand, and then sharing a look with Wendy, as she frantically picks up the pieces.

"Hey…" she stage whispers to her friend.

"… let’s go wash up. They…" she says, throwing her eyes to the others "… seem busy today."

Freddie looks at Emily. "Did I invite everyone to the river? What's happening here?" He laughs, and loses interest in Rose, she's clearly a bit strange, and he's too nervous to sort this out.

Emily sighs and resists the urge to shake her head and merely says, "Did you?" Inspecting her hands she realizes that some gooey macaroni crud is on her fingers.

"I'm going to wash up. You have to wonder what this stuff does to a body. It's pretty gross."
