Boseman High School Shenanigans: Episode 1

By now Emily has sucked down a few thirsty gulps of her drink and offers Freddie what's left of the Dr. Pipps.

Yeah, sharing is fun. She's into the double-meaning conversation. This is a comfortable way for her to let him know she's into him. Plus it takes her mind off of Mr. Edge. But she has a reputation to build and she doesn't want to be considered loose so she decides if there is to be a next move, Freddie would have to make it.

He sips the sweet beverage and unwraps his sub. "I thought you'd be different, when we first met. You know? Not that you, that you, wasn't fun, but this Emily, the weed breeder? A different kind of fun. What other secrets hide behind those disguise worthy glasses?"

He bites into the sub and lies back, groaning in pleasure. He chews the mouthful down and swallows, then says, "I've been waiting for this taste all day. And it's so better after that smoke."

One hand snakes over and touches her far side, fingers confidently holding that soft spot just above Emily's hip. He eats the sub quietly one-handed, his attention split between the feel of her side, trying not to get sub crumbs all over himself like a slob, and the dancing river water matching the ebb and flow of the THC in his ears.

Zach

Moments after Rose slips away, Zach hears the faint grumble of Macro's old 1990 Z28, its V8 rumbling as the boy waits, as Zach's sister undoubtedly runs across the road and jumps into the coupe. The burnout behind the wheel knows enough to not gun it near the Tidwell home, so the car's takeoff is a measured one that doesn't attract parental attention.

The teen gets a simple text back from his sister, eventually.

Rose: I'll be fine, chill
A little later, when Zach tries to slip out himself, his getaway is less successful.

"Son?" Mr. Tidwell says from the front door after his son heads out. Zach is already almost at the street, and Abby's replies are buzzing his phone. "Where are you headed, Zach? You... we talked about this. It's really better if you... stay close to home when you're not in a group. And it's a school night."

OOC:

Don't mean to cut you off at the pass here, but you do have "Overprotective Parents." If you don't want to argue with him about it, or have him and your mom be upset about this later, make a Persuasion check, please. Bennie in it for you. (+1)

The Banks (Freddie & Emily)

Freddie and Emily's extra awesome, drug-and-hormone-fueled after school special (needs) moment is soured, at least momentarily, by the roar of a speeding car coming up the road that leads to the dirt parking lot where the Tesla and the van are already parked. It's loud, and there's a cloud of acrid black smoke trailing behind the Camaro as it comes, a two-door muscle car from the 90s that pulls to a skidding stop, pelting the other two vehicles with gravel. As the dust clears, Rose Tidwell gets out and waves at the pair before she starts jogging towards them.

"Freddie!" the girl calls, and the pair on the river bank can see that the driver is remaining in the vehicle as Rose closes the distance. The smell of pot is in the air as the brunette arrives, and she's all grins -- and all boobs, Fred notices. Her tank swoops low in the front, and 21st century bra technology is on fine display... or rather it puts her on fine display. He's pretty sure he could lose half his sub down there.

"I knew you guys weren't coming here to study," Zach's younger sister says as she smells the air and sees the paraphernalia, a little breathless as she joins them. "Is there enough to go around again?"

As she talks, though, Rose's eyes start to add things up. The closeness of how the pair is sitting. The two sandwiches and the two drinks. The look on Emily's face...

"I'm just getting something to eat," Zach replies. He throws a glance at his phone, then turns off the screen and puts it in his pocket with a sigh. "I'm seventeen. I can go out for a burger by myself." He indicates that he's going to continue his walk but his dad still doesn't look satisfied, so Zach decides to be petty. "This is ridiculous," he complains. "Rose can go out whenever and however long and with whomever she wants and I have to justify myself to get a quick bite to eat without a police escort?" He crosses his arms, then opens his mouth to give some neat concluding argument, but fails to come up with one and so closes it again. Instead, he just stares at his dad, waiting for his answer.

"I am not a perv!" Wendy retorts, along with at least two arm-smacks. "But yes. I bet they have, and we owe it to the... student body to make sure we report the news. All the news."

Back into the hallway the pair creeps, and as time goes by, the school seems quieter by the minute. That quiet makes the fact that something is going on in the Language Center all the more obvious. The door is closes, but both Wendy and Lily hear it as they reenter the linoleum-floored corridor. A quiet thumping. A grunt, maybe a pant? The scraping sound of a piece of furniture being moved on the floor... a squeaking?"

The girls share a dead silent glance at one another as they contemplate approaching the door to look into the narrow window...

Mr. Tidwell looks like he has more to say... about a variety of things, but he decides his son is right. He's just going out for a burger, after all. He does defend his suspect parenting, though.

"Okay, okay. Please just -- let us know if you need a ride home or anything, and steer clear of... you know, kids from the wrong side of the tracks. And watch for traffic. Oh -- and Rose? She's at a friend's studying, Zach. She's always very good about letting us know where she's going and who she's with."

As he walks along the side of the road, towards the service station with the diner he doesn't hate, Zach looks again at his phone.

Abby: Oh? Whacha gonna eat?
Abby: And how was the day at school?
Abby: Meet anyone cool yet? What was the cute boy's name?
Abby: ...
Abby: Hullo?

"Rose?" Freddie says, and sees only that amazing shirt. "Who was your dillhole friend? My car better not ... ah fuck it I don't care. Come on over. We're watching the river and contemplating the control math has over our lives." The image swims before his mind, vibrating with his pulse.

He'd rather contemplate math alone with Emily, but Rose is Zach's sister, and that's what he does, isn't it? Protect little sisters. Sexy little sisters. My God that girl could wear a shirt like there was a Nobel prize in play. Little sister... Oh no, am I my father? He claps his palms over his eyes pressing hard until he sees red, trying to reset his brain like clearing the cache.

"Rose! Come on over. Oh this is Emily. My math bong." He looks at her, his mind echoing something not quite right. "Haha, math bong!" He snorts a giggle, and falls over his head laying Emily's her lap.

"Right," Zach replies with a shrug. He doesn't argue the point about the very clear difference in the way his parents treat the two siblings. It's not worth the risk of his dad changing his mind right now. "I'll let you know if I need anything."

Then he pulls his phone back out and gets to walking.

Zach: Sorry, couldn't answer for a second
Zach: I got violently stabbed to death for wearing a T-shirt outside
Zach: Or at least that's how my dad was acting...
Zach: There's this burger place Freddie told me about. Going to try that
Zach: School was good. Test went well
Zach: (God, teachers are so hot at this school)
Zach: Which cute boy? There's so many
Zach: Aaron. Still not sure he knows I exist
Zach: But I did mention Freddie before, didn't I? He's actually really cute as well. Not going to get into romantic rivalry with Rose though
Zach: Also, why am I the one answering questions if you have a date? Tell me literally everything

As Zach walks, and cars whistle by, he texts.

Abby: Um, why were you stabbed again? Was it an offensive tee?
Abby: Burger! Make it a double! I want a burger.
Abby: Slow down! Hot teachers. Hot Aaron! What's he look like?
Abby: And yeah, you mentioned Freddie. Is he gay tho? WAIT IS ROSE INTO HIM?!
Abby: Date is going good, thanks for asking! I don't know what I'm looking for right now, you know? But... something.

As Zach and Abby continue texting, progress on learning anything about either one's questions is impeded by the fact that rather than just answer them, they both try to pull info from the other, meaning a lot of circular questions, avoiding answering and making small trade deals for information. It could be incredibly frustrating but it's just how things go sometimes between them and they both find this style of conversation very amusing.

Zach discovers that Abby is going out with her ex, Dan. Zach remembers them breaking up when Abby initially came out as lesbian before she later realized that she's actually bi. Zach isn't sure what he thinks about that, considering all the yelling and crying he remembers during the breakup, but aside from that, there was never really anything wrong with Dan, so if Abby wants to give him another chance, he doesn't have any real objections to give beyond a gut feeling.

Abby in turn manages to get a description of Aaron out of Zach that is probably objectively far too flattering and she gets him talking about Freddie a bit.

Zach: I don't know if he's gay
Zach: Probably not. He seems to be a bit hung up on his (female) ex
Zach: But he is pretty cute. In a clueless jock kind of way
Zach: Him and Rose is complicated. I asked him to ask her to HC since I know she'd otherwise roll up with the biggest douche in school
Zach: Or with that creep Marco
Zach: Anyway, he kind of invited her to this thing today but I'm not sure if he meant it and I'm a bit worried it'll turn out super awkward

"Wouldn't you like to know," Emily says in response to Freddie's comment about what lies behind her glasses. "Why don't you take them off and find out."

Just when things were getting interesting along comes Rose. Emily under the influence stares dagger at her.

Shit timing Rose.

Emily's dagger stare switches targets after Freddie refers to her as his math bong but then decides she likes the idea of being his anything and lightens up. She's kind of stuck and she does want to gather customers.

"Yeah, sure, plenty to go around. Weed that is." She felt she needed to qualify that but she also she noticed some kind of struggle going on with Freddie. His face grew dark for a moment and some innate response welled up within her like almost an urge to protect him but from what she didn't know. Sliding her hand possessively up his arm she needed something to say.

"These subs are really good."

"Just a... guy I met this summer when we moved here," Rose says quickly, gesturing back towards the parking lot and the still idling car. There are some serious mixed signals going on. Fred's eyes on her chest. That's good. When he then acts like someone has thrown acid in his face, and when Emily touches him affectionately on the arm -- less good.

Then Freddie invites her over, and introduces the other girl.

"We've met," Rose says, not unpleasantly, and she smiles when Richardsen mentions that there's lots to go around. "Oh cool! I kind of owe Marco for driving me. Could I buy like, a little bag or a couple of joints? Like a quarter ounce or something?"

Fred, you know Marco and HE'S A DOUCHE. Now you recognize the car! Guy is like 19. He graduated last year, and repeated a grade in middle school. Why don't you two get along?

Abby: OMG, that's the guy with the gun!
Abby: She's not still hanging with him is she?
Zach is about to answer when a car roars behind him, swerving dangerously close to him. It's truck, actually, and there's a teenager in the passenger seat leaning out as they go by. "Walking's for faggots!" a boy in a muscle shirt shouts as he takes a swing at the innocent pedestrian!

Freddie looks over at the car. "Marco? Rose, what in the world are you doing with him? He terrorized the sophomores when I started at Boseman, and not in a funny way, more of a wreck your stuff and laugh way. Just being a bully, at least until four of us jumped him after school and beat his loser ass to a pulp. I carried a knife for a month after that, but he never pushed it, at least not with my friends." Freddie has a vengeful streak a mile wide, and his eyes narrow at the car. Even through the mellowing haze of the pot, his anger riles up.

He's about to tell Emily not to sell her anything, but stops himself before he puts his foot in his mouth. "By the way, where were you after school? I thought we were going to talk."

"You didn't really did you, Freddie? Beat him up?" For some reason Emily didn't think he was the type to beat people up or carry a knife. She was pleasantly surprised at to learn he might be a bad boy but she was also mildly annoyed at the continued attention Rose was getting.
