Principal Romero
Romero stands and listens as Zach tells his story, eyeing Romanov and Gromn with anger as the details come out. Aaron is nodding and agreeing at various points, reinforcing what Zach says, and when Tidwell takes a momentary break in the conversation to ask how he’s doing, Connery just lifts his eyebrows and shrugs. It was quiet an experience, the fight with the pair now standing just a few feet away, seemingly cowed by the Principal’s admittedly fierce presence.

"Alright, thank you Zach, Aaron. I’ll make sure to get hold of the Richardsens as well, so I can—"

Ms. Romanov
"They’re lying," Ms. Romanov blurts. "Poor mister Gromn here was just trying to work on getting the air conditioning to work in the lab. Those kids, the two that are gone, they’re on drugs."

And at that moment… Lily arrives!

Booking it straight away from the house, metallic sounds resonate in Fred’s head as he plunges into the woods. These are imagined cues, not real ones, but the sound of a slide being worked, a shotgun being pumped, a bolt-action rifle being racked — they all drive Freddie forward. His feet are bloody and stinging after no time at all, but the towel-wearing boy moves through the forest, heading downhill into stands of trees that get larger and thicker and wilder as he goes.

It’s not long before the boy hears the river, and before he spies something on the bank that he doesn’t recognize. A tent or a lean to? Someone, at some point, has been camping down here.
OOC:
Fred, your raise on your Athletics check has given you a clean getaway. If pursuit is coming, it’s quite a ways back.

On the Way Home

The Richardsen’s van screams down the road as the two siblings shout and vent at one another.

"I know it’s a good question, that’s why I asked it!" Steve shouts.
A half-mile later, he’s calmed a little. "You don’t think… you don’t think they found mom and dad do you?"

Seconds later, the boy adds, "I mean… how would they find us?"
OOC:
Emily, feel free to describe arriving home. What would your parents normally be doing at this time, in the middle of the school day? Does Dad work at home? What’s his job? Same question for Mom…

"Take a look at this, Principal Romero." Lily announces, like a soap-opera deus ex machina.

"I think you’ll see everything you need to see right there." she says, presenting the camera screen for him to look at. She keeps the camera in her own hands, however, as she wasn’t sure how the other photos might look.

"I… I know Wendy and I would be willing to undergo a drug test, if you wanted to get the police down here, sir. If it would help clear our names, I mean." she gives her best innocent voice as she says so.

"Uhm, I guess I'd be up for a drug test, too. I don't have anything to hide," Zach adds, trying to get a peek at the picture as well.

Then he gestures down at himself, "Although I was in a bit of an accident in the lunch hall and was hoping I would get the chance to go home and change before the next block of classes starts."

He refastens his towel and notices that his erection has mostly faded, which is good. Rubbing one out in front of this squatter's tent is likely a way to get molested.

Is this someone's from these estate homes, or is it a rando homeless peep? Hoping they have spare sweat pants, he moves toward the tent, investigating the tent. "Hello?" he calls quietly, not wanting to alert the probably-a-God-damned-SWAT-cop Mr. Unger, "Anybody in the tent?"

"Steve, for fuck sake, I don't know. Stop asking questions and let me drive!" A few minutes later the van enters the long driveway and bounces to a hard stop leaving skid marks on the gravel driveway.

"Yeah, yeah I know dad will be pissed." Emily yanks out the keys and slams the door as she stomps toward the house. "Don't forget to roll up your window," she shouts back.

She stops on the front door steps afraid to go in. They always answered their phones. Always. It was a rule in their situation. Her mom was always home working some inane IT job and she loved to blast music while she did it. She said it eased the pain of boredom. But the music drove Emily nuts because it was some ancient horrible rock. There's no way her mom would miss a call because her screen would light up when a call came in. Dad worked at the library stacking and checking out books. He said it beat staying home and was a good cover. Someone had to appear to be working or people in town would get suspicious.

Principal Romero
"Police?!" Romero says with surprise to Lily, even as he stares and clenches his jaw at the pictures she's showing him, "no need to involve them from what I've seen." When he sees a fourth, and then a fifth picture, he shakes his head and holds out his hand. "I need the camera, Lily. Hand it over."

There's mention of drug tests and Zach is asking to go home, but to all that the Principal holds up his other hand. "Hold on. Hold on!" Then he's pointing at Gromn and Romanov. "My office, you two. Now!"

Silently, the disheveled pair nods and walks down the hall, headed towards the man's office.

"Lily?" Romero asks again. "Unless you hand it over, they won't believe the photos weren't doctored. You'll get your camera back."

"No!" comes a gruff voice from inside what Fred now sees is a ratty old tent. There's an old camp stove nearby, and a few empty cans of beans. "No one in here! Leaves me alone! I never saw nothin'!"

Frantically trying to roll up his window as Emily slams her door and stalks towards the house, Steve can't seem to give up his line of thinking, despite his sister clearly telling him to. "Maybe someone was... caught... on camera or something? But still, how would the bad guys know where to go?"

At the same time, the girl's phone buzzes. It's her mother!

Mom: Honey! Just seeing your message! Sorry... was at the grocery and you know how bad the connection is there
Mom: Coming home now

And then Emily's phone starts to ring -- caller ID says it's her mom.
OOC:
Roll Notice, please, to see if you can tell what's going on with Steve.

"Oh my God, Steve what the hell is wrong with you?" At the same time that she is exasperated with her little brother she realizes that he does have a good idea. They could check the security footage.

Just then her phone rings, breaking the tension between the siblings. Glancing at Steve with a hopeful panic she rummages for her phone. It slips out of her hands, lands on the stoop, and skids down a step.

"Oh fuck me .... " Mom blazes across the phone screen ....."It's mom!"

Mom! What the hell? You scared me half to death. Someone is on to us. Come home quickly!

"Fuck dude, what the fuck? Are you living here? What did you see? Come on, talk to me, maybe I can help you out."

Freddie thinks he should offer him money, but he's naked and that would be a fake promise.

"I'm just hiding from the angry father in the house. If you want to stay in there then you do you. But I'll be here a little bit, until it's safe for me to make a run for it."

Shit, I sound like a hardened criminal.

"Nothing!" Steve says from the van where he's still in the passenger seat. "Nothing's wrong with me, stop saying that! Stop being a bitch!"

A glance back shows Emily that her brother is pale, has his nose in his phone and is frantically scrolling.

A text comes through at that moment as well.

Mom: Shit. I'm on my way! Is your brother with you? Are you both okay?

M. Chandling

The tent unzips and a wild-eyed face with crazy grey hair and a scraggle of a beard appears. It's old man Chandling, the nutter who lives in the woods!

"Help me?!" he says, again gruffly. "What's can yous do to helps me?! You gots any food? Booze? Cigarettes? Lysol? Boy, you gots you some Lysol?"

When Fred explains he'd hiding, and when the man's eyes focus long enough to see that the teen is just wearing a towel, he sniggers. "Heehehehehehee. Where's yours clothes, boy? Half naked in the woods. Not good! Tried it one year. Not good!"

Suddenly the unsettling chuckling is gone, and the man disappears back into this tent. The zipper goes up, and he says, muffled now, "I ain't seen nones of those lights in the sky neither! Nope! Yous barking up the wrong tree, kid!"
Feb 11, 2023 7:22 pm
Yeah he's here but something is going on with him too. Hurry!

"Ok look, I'm sorry. I'm a little tense, you know? But what's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost." Emily takes a few deep breaths to calm herself or she'll blow a gasket. It's too many things at once what with the crazy violent teachers, the photo, and now her little brother is acting strangely and his face is too pale.

"What are you reading on your phone? What is going on?" Like they needed yet another disaster to add to the mix.

"Holy fuck," Freddie mutters after that tirade. "Thanks for your time, bruh. What do you need Lysol for out here? Strange place to be living if you're worried about germs."

Since he's not in immediate threat of being shot, he sits down on the bank and contemplates life briefly. I hit Kelly fucking Unger! Best. Day. EVER! The contemplation ends as quickly as it started, especially as his body reacts to the afternoon's stickier activities. Think of Call of Duty combinations...

Freddie decides to engage the crazy nutjob and thinks about some of the conspiracy theories he's heard. "Tell me about the lights. Don't worry man, I've seen some really weird shit, too. Have you ever looked really closely at red lights? There are cameras in them. That's how I know 911 was an inside job, and ... Bill Gates is sticking tracking devices under your skin with routine vaccinations!"

"The whole thing happened like a minute ago," Zach argues. "How and when would Lily have doctored the pictures?" He looks at Lily and suggests with a shrug, "But I guess there's no harm in giving him the camera..."
OOC:
Lily, you should insight check him. I think he's working with the Borg

"Well… they can just check the CCTV to corroborate the pictures, right? And I’m sure the police have a guy that can check if an image has been messed with, sir!"

She hold the camera out of reach for now, eyeing the man suspiciously. Her instinct was to warn warn him. Warn him not to go with those two alone. Not with Mr Levitt not showing up today….

But she held the camera close to herself and took a good long look at the man.

Steve looks up from his phone to his sister, and suddenly she sees something else there -- in his face. Not just fear, panic, and worry.

Guilt.

The boy draws a trembling breath, then he holds his phone up so Emily can see. There's a selfie-style picture of him on Snapagram, on one of the many social media platforms the whole family had promised they wouldn't use. Promised to themselves, and actually signed agreements for with the Feds.

"It's under a puh-seudonym," he says, mispronouncing the word. "Not my name! I mean... they couldn't find us through that could they?!"

The tent's zipper comes down slowly -- very slowly -- and then the old man's hand appears, motioning the boy inside.

"Come ons. If we're goings to talks truths, we needs to dos it quiet-like."

When Freddie doesn't immediately head into the tent, for any number of reasons, Chandling's face appears again. "Looks. If you wants to talk about thems lights, we haves to do it in heres. I haves it all wired up. No scanners can hears us, no satellites can spies, no mind-readin' fields can penetrates my defenseses!"
