"Not long, sir! Not really!" Lily starts, playing up the model student act.

"Wendy and I were just having fun… trying it out.

I… I don’t think there was any cult stuff, sir. There was a flying coffin, or something like that, but no cult stuff!"

Freddie's temper has got him in hot water. He's a vengeful bastard, he knows that about himself, but he's usually smarter than this. He needs to smooth this over and if he feels needs to get even later, he can do so with a plan.

"You're right, Sheriff Atkin, that was an awful thing to say. I'm so angry about what happened tonight and I lashed out at you. My sisters have been through so much, since the accident, and to see Debby laid out on the ground? I don't know that I'll ever get over that. I am sorry, and if you want to take a swing to teach me a lesson, I'll tell your deputy I tripped."

Stop digging!

"What kind of reputation? Has he been here before? What do you think we were planning down by the river?"

Dirty old man. Ok if he wants titillation, I'll give it to him. Maybe I can get him off his line of questioning about my family.

She has to suppress a giggle at the pun, if he was smart enough to get it. She surprises herself with her audacity.

As to my reputation, I have a healthy attitude toward sex. If it feels good do it, is my motto. So yeah, that's what we were planning. Going all the way, if you know what I mean.

"It's not actually like that," Zach says. Then he shakes his head. "No," he then replies to the actual question. "We invited Aaron, but not them. Debby and Sarah hung out with us for a bit but they left before we started with the boardgames." He's not quite sure how to act about this whole Satanic Panic thing, so he hopes to just brush past it. "Marco is my sister's... friend. Apparently, she wanted to see what we were up to. She has a thing for Freddy, so that's probably why. I guess she asked Marco to drive her. And I think Sarah and Debby wanted to prank us and scare us a bit, but it worked too well. Lily panicked and hit Debby with the pool cue, trying to protect us. It was kind of self-defense."

Sheriff Akins
Lily

The Sheriff's eyes are difficult to read behind his glasses, but from his expression Lily can tell he's skeptical but listening... until she finishes her response the way she does.

"A... flying coffin," the man says, slowly. "What do you mean by that, Lily? Are you on drugs right now, Lily? Were you all smoking reefer in that basement? Was it ludes? Shrooms? Acid? What about oxy, or heroin? Fentanyl? Be straight with me, young lady."

Fred

"That's what I thought," Sheriff Akin says smugly, settling back into his seat like the giant asshole that he is. "Apology accepted, Fred. I've always felt bad about what happened with your father. Leaving behind a fine woman like that with no one to look after her. Crying shame, that was."

Drawing a deep breath, the man releases it and scratches at his ear, digging deep to get some ear wax. "So. Now that you worked all that out of your system, what don't you tell me what happened tonight? All of it. This game you were playing. Your sisters and there doins'. Why Marco Corbitt and Rose Tidwell were there. And how two of those people ended up in the ER."

Emily

Akins shifts in his seat, a little uncomfortable as Emily gets frank on him. "I'm not -- I don't... look," he stammers, pointing at the girl with two fingers, mimicking holding a gun, "focus on tonight. What you were all doing in the Solomon's basement on a school night. Where these other kids came from, and why. How they got hurt. What happened, Emily? You words. What happened?"

Zach

"So it was Lily. With a... pool cue," the Sheriff says slowly. "Now why did she do that? What led little Lily to nearly taking that girl's head off? They have history? Was she high?"

"N… No, sir! I don’t even know what those things are!" She protests, lying through her teeth.

"All I remember is that I was a holy warrior, or something. And… and… well, we were in real trouble. And everyone was basically… asking me to pray. And… well, my character did! And then we won! Basically…"

"Well, as I said," Zach replies. "Debby and Sarah were trying to scare us so Debby was wearing a hood and had a hatchet in her hand and was skulking around outside. We didn't recognize her, so we just thought it was some dangerous intruder. And no, Lily wasnt high. None of us were." And Zach is very glad they never got to the suggested weed-smoking. "I don't know if Lily and Debby have history or know each other at all. But even if, it wouldn't matter because we didn't know it was Debby."

Emily succeeded in her little game. It was fun to watch the cop squirm under her promiscuous glare.

"Look it was an innocent game. That's it. That's why we were there. A bunch of kids playing a game. End of story. And about the injuries, at first, I thought it was a practical joke until I saw two other shadows outside and then I took off and hid in the bathroom.

She was being deliberately vague and feeding him a little info. It wasn't an unfamiliar ploy.

The fight is out of him, he's not willing to get beaten up by the hick sheriff over this. "I invited my friends over for pizza and games. We usually play at school, but missed the last couple times. Lily and Wendy, Zach, Aaron, and Emily. My sisters joined us for pizza but went upstairs when we started playing. I had a bunch of games out, they chose Pathfinder, and so we played that for an hour or two, and then it started raining. I don't remember who saw it first, but someone was out there with an axe, so I ran upstairs. My dad used to keep a gun but it was gone, Belinda must have moved it. So I ran back down, and saw the walkout door open and Debby lying on the ground. She wasn't moving! I saw that molester Marco then, and I figured he was at fault but I didn't see what happened. So I plowed into him before he could feel her up or whatever he does." He winces, feels his ribs. "I heard something crack when he went down. I --" he stops and rubs his head. "Debby was bleeding I just want her to be okay." He takes a deep breath. She's okay, it worked out. "Emily called for an ambulance. That's when your boys and then the ambulances came."

"Are... wait," the lawman says, taking off his shades, revealing very narrowed eyes. "Are you talking about your Dungeons and the Dragons game?" Sitting back, he shakes his head. "You're mixing up reality and fantasy, Lily. It's a good thing we confiscated that game. There are two kids in the hospital tonight because of that nonsense."

Putting his sunglasses back on, he scratches at his temple. "Alright. So why don't you describe what actually happened with Debby Solomon. And with the skid, Marco. Who hurt them, Lily?"

"You didn't know it was Debby," the Sheriff says, trying on what he clearly thinks is a lie for size. "And she -- and her sister -- were dressed up. Well, Zach, I happen to know that people dress up for this Satanic game, the Dungeons and the Dragons. Little thing called research. Little thing called know your enemy. But I'll play along. Why would Lily go after someone she didn't know with the pool cue? Why not call the police? Why not just keep them locked outside?"

There's a pause, and the man adds, "No, I think you were all turned around in your little fantasy world. I think Lily was on something, and forgot that Debby was dressed up as one of the monsters in the game."

"And what was it," Akins responds, "about those two shadows that made you want to hide in the bathroom? Hm? And who was it that cracked Debby Solomon in the cranium, and broke Marco's ribs? You must have seen something."

The door opens then, and the deputy comes back in with Emily's water. He gives it to her and returns to his position near the door.

"Well?" the Sheriff presses. "Who was it? Even if you didn't see it happen, I'm sure your friends were taking about it. We're just trying to get the story straight here, Emily. Only the truth will help with that. We'll know if you're lying."

Fred

Fred looses a blast of information, infodumping all over the Sheriff once he gets hold of his anger. Akins winces several times throughout the outburst, and eventually ends holding up his hands in classic 'whoa, whoa' fashion.

"Fred -- listen. Slow down. You were playing your Dungeons and the Dragons game and you saw someone outside. And rather than, say, tell your mother, or call 911 -- that was Emily did that -- you decided to go for your father's gun?" The man rubs his temples a little, then he continues.

"Imagine what might have happened, Fred, if you'd gotten hold of that gun. We'd be talking about your sister and Marco in the morgue, instead of intensive care. Your mom even know how to handle a firearm? Pretty woman like that, kind of unlikely, right?"

There's a pause as the deputy reenters the room, then Sheriff Akins continues. "So where's the gun now, do you know? Is this a pistol you're talking about? And why do you think your sister was outside, dressed that way?"

"Why don't you test Lily for drugs then?" Zach asks, getting frustrated. "She didn't take anything. And the reason she attacked Debby was that we saw three creepy people outside, one of them armed, and she wanted to protect Wendy - I mean, all of us. Because that's the type of person that Lily is!" He slides his chair away from Akins a bit, then adds, "Where are my parents, by the way? I'm seventeen. Are you even allowed to question me without them present? And besides, nobody even believes that stuff about Dungeons & Dragons being satanic anymore since, like, the '90s."

"I'm not saying another word. I want my lawyer." Emily also didn't like the fact that the other cop was guarding the door.

Freddie crosses his arms. Tell me everything, no, slow down. I'm being interrogated.

He looks at the sheriff in some confusion. "Emily called 9-1-1. I'm not sure how much good it would have done if six scared to death kids all called 9-1-1 and started screaming about what was happening. All of them had cellphones, everyone knows the number, so I ran for a weapon."

"Would I have shot someone? Maybe, if they had been an actual axe murderer and started chopping on my friends. Otherwise, I was really really hoping that I could just kind of wave it around and scare them off to go axe murderize someone else."

He frowns at the last question. "I don't know. It's Belinda's room now, and she's redecorated it some. I guess she moved it. I don't know, I've never talked to her about it since ... well, since Dad. It's a gun, kinda like you and your deputies have. I don't know guns. A handgun, with a clip that goes in the bottom, I think. Not like those old-timey ones on TV with like a part that spins and you put bullets in. A proper one."

"All I know is that Fred said praying would work. So I prayed! I prayed with all I had!"

Lily rolls her eyes internally, hoping against hope that the sheriff was a praying man. It seemed like no, so far.

Then she takes in a deep breath, for dramatic effect.

"Well, like I said. I was praying, and Wendy was with me! We… we all heard a bang then! When we looked outside, someone had a weapon! Well… what can I say. I was afraid. But this is America, I thought. And I had to defend myself!

When I found out who it was, I felt so stupid. I guess she was playing a silly prank on us. Trying to scare us! As for… Marco, was it? I didn’t see. I was so busy tending to Fred’s sister!"

"Now now, hold on there, Zach, no need to get upset. Your parents are on their way, they'll be here soon. And we're not questioning you son, not officially. Just taking your statement. I'm just tryin' to make sure it was really an accident."

The burly man pauses, stifles a burp, then goes on. "So okay, little Lily was protecting her friend you say. Then tell me what happened with these other two, your sister Rose... and the boy, Marco. They a couple, are they? How he end up hurt?"

"Lawyer?!" Sheriff Akins says with a smile he can't contain. "Girl, you don't got a lawyer. We ain't accused you of nothin'. Just what is it you think you need a lawyer for?"

The sunglasses come off. The stare is steely and penetrating. He leans closer, his breath sour.

"What'd you do, Emily? What's got you so riled?"

The girl can't tell if the lawman is asking about tonight or about witness protection... but that doesn't make any of this easier!

Fred

Reaching for his pen and notepad, Sheriff Akins scribbles something down, squinting as he focuses on his handwriting, then he looks at Fred over the top of his glasses.

"I'll ask your sweet mom about the gun. She'll give me the, uh, skinny. But you never answered my question about your sister, Freddie. What was she doin' trying to scare everyone? And you really think this Marco character was dangerous, huh? You two got a history?"
