Boseman High School Shenanigans: Episode 1

Lily snorts when Zach mentions ‘beadhead selfies.’

"Oh, yeah right!" she says, giving the boy a mischievous side eye! Her mind went to Wendy.

Should I send her a selfie?…

"A truck stop!" she interjects when it’s mentioned, with a hand to her mouth in faux-shock! Then she winks!

"Nothing else?" her eyes narrow, knowingly! "I’m a reporter, you know! I can smell when there’s more to a story!"

Zach's cheeks go red at that but he still can't get that smile of his face. "What do you take me for, Lily?" he asks her playfully. "On the first date?"

He chuckles along with her when she acts shocked about the truck stop. "Yeah, looking back, I should have taken him to the Banks, probably. But I didn't realize that things were heading that way so quickly. I thought we'd just grab a bite to eat or something. I didn't realize he was actually into me like that."

He grows a bit more serious as he says, "So yesterday was kind of a rough day, but my night was amazing. How about yours?" His eyes involuntarily dart to Wendy, who is probably watching them and wondering what these two are whispering about so excitedly. "I noticed you came in late as well. Everything alright?"

"Oh, please." Lily waving her hand like some dismissive dame. "Everyone has their first date at the Banks. So cliche!"

And then she chances a look at Wendy, and her face reddens. Then she looks anywhere but at the girl, but not before giving her a quick smile:

"Oh… yeah. I had her phone charger. Put it in my pocket when the cops told us to grab our stuff. You know… we live a few doors down so I just dropped it off when I got home. No big deal…"

"Really?" Zach asks. "Because people don't blush like that about 'No big deal'." He nudges her with his shoulder. "I mean, maybe I do, but not you. Something happened. Did you kiss?" His eyes widen at this. "Please tell me you kissed. You'd be the cutest couple in the whole school!" He's looking more obviously at Wendy now, an excited smile on his lips. He meets her eyes, then indicates towards Lily with his, a silent question on his face.

Rose lifts her eyebrows when Zach apologizes. She wasn't sure what she expected as her brother pulled her aside, but it wasn't... this.

"Uh... whatever. Don't worry about it, bro. I know that... you're..."

Rose chews her lip briefly, then leans closer and lowers her voice. "I know it's not easy, what you're doing. It's stressful. For all of us, but I know especially for you. Let's just support one another, alright? No more dick moves. On either of our parts. This school and these kids are weird, but I kind of dig it all already."

Looking up as Fred Solomon moves through the waiting room and then comes into his office, the school's principal doesn't rise from his chair. He does wet his lips and lift his eyebrows. Fred's sneaker squeaks on the floor, and, looking down, the boy sees a small puddle of something under his foot -- some yellowish fluid.

"No meeting I'm aware of. And... what events are those?" Romero asks mildly, his eyes meeting the teen's.

"What the hell? Did you spill soup in here?" Fred steps back out of the goo. His mind leaps to the strange events, and his boyish imagination recalls some old timey movie about adults going apeshit due to some ooze or alien virus or something -- he never watched it, but now it seems like something he should have.

"You haven't noticed that your faculty are completely off the charts messed up this week?" He's incredulous so he has to unleash the big gun. Accompanied by moving his head back slightly and up, he says, "Dude."

"Thanks, Rose," Zach replies with a smile. "I know it's hard for you as well. You had to move because of me. And I know we've been fighting more often recently, but I couldn't ask for a better sister."

He then chuckles at her last comment. "This place is kind of weird, isn't it? But I like it too. There are some great people here." Of course his thoughts first go to Aaron, but instead, he says, "I came out to one of my friends. Only as gay, but still. It went really well. You remember Lily? She's the one who knocked out Freddy's sister yesterday."
At that, he lets out a heavy breath. "Speaking of yesterday... How are you doing?" He demonstratively looks around. "No mom and dad or friends around who you have to act tough around. Just your weird big brother."

When Fred asks about the behavior of some faculty, Romero just looks at him. He doesn't respond, he doesn't react. A moment later, he smiles a little.

"I think you should get back to class. Focus on your studies," he says simply, nodding a bit.

"Whatever," Rose says with a smile when Zach tells her he couldn't ask for a better sister. Punching him in the arm lightly, she's about to say more when the boy tells her the rest of his news.

"What?! That's awesome! I mean awesome if they were cool with it. They were cool with it, right?"

The girl just blanches and nods when discussion turns to Lily -- she clearly knows Lily -- and what happened the prior night. Overall, she seems fine. "I'm good. You?"

Rose is nothing if not resilient, so it's no surprise to see her brush off the evening's events. "We really weren't trying to fuck up all of your nights. I just wanted to see if I could get with Fred a little more... and moron Marco is my only ride."

I was just glad I wasn't getting torpedoed by Mr. Unger. Unfortunately, that meant that my step mother probably was. I swallowed a retort about my therapist giving 15% off on referrals and instead turned and sloshed out of there. I had to find Belinda and this time I was going to walk in on her and she some shit. I mean, I was going to stop a woman in my life from being damaged by an abusive man. One thing was clear, that in order to get to the bottom of the crae crae at Boseman High, I was going to have to go full Veronica Mars. That's right. Full. Veronica. Mars.

Freddie internal monologues his way to begin searching for sexy hidey-holes around the school. There is the space under the west stairs in the basement, the volleyball storage room off the side of the gym, and behind the curtain on the stage in the gym, too, and of course, any number of classrooms that were free this period.

He'd start with the gym.

A Few Minutes Earlier (Zach)

"She is cool with it," Zach replies happily. "More than that. I'm pretty sure she's actually crushing a bit on her friend Wendy." This is a weird place to have a conversation, a completely empty school hallway, but it's nice, after a couple of days where he and Rose barely talked after he pissed her off, just them hanging out again. "Lily's really cool. I think you'd like her as well." He would have felt confident in that statement, if not for Rose' weird reaction to the name. He doesn't question her about it, but keeps it in mind.

He then nods. "Yeah, I'm good, too. It was stressful when it happened but it all turned out alright, I think. I'm sure Freddy's sister will be back from the hospital any moment." He then throws her a knowing smile when she comments about her motivations the previous evening. "I get it. Fred is pretty hot. But you know, next time, you can just come with me. I'll introduce you to all my nerd hobbies with my nerd friends." He half-turns towards the direction of his math class, indication that maybe by now they should start heading to class. Before he goes, however, he adds, "Come have lunch with us today. We might play some dorky boardgame, but maybe kicking his ass at Carcassone is the way to Fred's heart."

Emily sees her friends animatedly whispering but doesn't wonder for too long what's going on. Instead, she is filled with the idea of Freddie as she keeps revisiting certain scenes beside the river and looks forward to seeing him again.

But what in the hell is up with Edge? She could swear he was stealing glances at her. She was getting that icky feeling and it made the hairs stand up on the back of her neck. Frowning, she decides the next time he looks at her she would stare him down.

Lily sends her nose skyward, like some snooty toff.

"A gentlelady never tells!"

But the giddiness erupts inside her, and bursts out in the form of a laugh. She claps both hands over her mouth, and ducks her head before the teacher’s eyes scan the room to correct her.

"You’ll have to ask her! I’m innocent in all of this!" she whispers, throwing her hands up in the air.

The kissee not the kisser…

That response does nothing but make Zach even more curious. He was already looking at Wendy for her thoughts but in addition to using his eyes to indicate between them, he also mouths, "Are you two...?"

Rose rolls her eyes, turning it into a classic mean girl eye-flutter when there's mention of board games at lunch. "Ew. Don't say that. That makes Freddie less hot. I think he just plays those games to get the nerd girls. Like your pal Emily. You know, I think I interrupted them at the Banks on Monday. What's up with them?"

Earlier, in the Parking Lot (Emily)

As Emily parked the van, after driving herself and Steve to school, she noticed her brother was unusually quiet. And then, when she turned off the vehicle and prepared to get out, the boy stopped her.

"Wait! Emily, wait. There's something... there's something I've been keeping from you, sis. Something you need to hear."

Now, Math Class (Emily)

Glaring at Mr. Edge, essentially daring him to look at her, Emily Richardsen doesn't look away when the handsome teacher finally looks her way -- and meets her eyes with his. Edge has that smolder in his eyes, that panty-drenching look that can glue a teen girl to her seat. The look extends far longer than it should, and Emily is about to wonder if anyone else is noticing when Mr. Edge runs a hand through his unkempt hair and smiles.

"Emily Richardsen," he says, holding up an obviously random paper from his desk, "I need you to stay after class. We need to talk about this assignment."

The Gym

Fred checks a few empty classrooms and other private places where his stepmother might be having stand-up sex with Kelly's father (ugh!), but he comes up empty and heads for the gym. The double doors are open and he can hear that a class is going on, that Ms. Maidstone is in there, teaching. Then, suddenly, there she is. In those yoga pants and that sports bra top thing. No panty lines. All firm flesh and lean muscle and curves beneath what fabric there was.

The class was a group of freshmen, and they were flailing like spazzes as the gym teacher was trying to get them to stretch out and cool down after the run, chin-ups, and rope climbs she had them all doing. Out of the corner of her eye, Brittany sees Fred, and she tells the struggling, red-faced students to take five as she jogs over to the senior. Her face is glowing; there's a sheen of sweat on her skin.

"Fred, what's up? Shouldn't you be in class?"
