"Look, I thought we had a plan," Zach frowns, glancing around nervously. "But if we can't get in here, let's hide the stuff we borrowed from the gym and get to our classes. This was a dumb idea." He looks between Emily and Lily. "And I think for the credit card trick, the door needs to be unlocked. Which I don't think this one is. At least not if there's something important behind it."

Lily fiddles with the handle, ensuring that the thing is actually locked.

"Happens sometimes, right?"

She puts a closed fist up to the door then, too; holding it an inch away.

"Maybe we just knock?"
Jun 26, 2023 3:53 pm
"Knock? If anyone is in there at this hour they are up to no good and won't answer. I suppose if we are all missing from our classes though, that might stand out. But nothing's normal around here anymore, so maybe not."

Chewing on a lip she struggles to make a decision. "You know what? Fuck it, fuck classes and let's go in. Who wants to try it? What about trying a pen and a credit card. One of us jiggles the pen around in the lock and the other pokes at it with the card?"

OOC:
BTW, don’t fret overmuch about this door being a blocker. Don’t be too intimidated to even try to get it open — interesting things can always happen even if you don’t succeed. And like Lily says, many approaches are available — I was just trying to outline some obvious stuff I thought you were headed for.

Remember I am generally not a ‘nothing happens’ GM.

"That won't do anything," Zach frowns, watching as the two girls fiddle around the lock. He looks to the bag of sports supplies that the others have brought. "This is a really terrible idea," he mumbles, but then he takes one of the bats that Lily packed. "Get away from the door," he says. "And please don't ever tell anyone I did this."
He lines up the bat with the doorknob, takes a breath, holds it and then swings...

It’s an accurate and surprisingly violent blow that Zach strikes — the boy puts his all into it, and in one stroke the steel doorknob is torn free and goes bouncing down the hallway. It was frightfully loud, but exposed the inner-working of the lock and in seconds the group has the mechanism defeated and the door opening.

To perhaps their surprise, behind it they find a short hallway and then a set of concrete steps that descend down twenty feet or so… where it carries on straight, out of sight. A bare lightbulb overhead lights the top landing, and light from below indicates the tunnel or passageway also looks at least dimly lit.
OOC:
It really was loud, btw. What do y’all do?

Freddie grabs the knob and chases the others inside. "Yo, let's close it behind us, no one will know what the noise is if they peek in."

He gets them inside, and closes it, tosses the busted look straight up, catching it. "Hot damn, Zach, that was some sweet swinging. You got balls!"

He looks at the girls. "Sorry, ovaries, cuz girls are tougher, right?!"
Jun 27, 2023 1:49 am
"Whoa! A secret passageway? This is getting very interesting." Emily realizes they have to make a quick decision.

"That was well done Zach but it was really loud. I'm sure someone heard it. Maybe a bunch of people. So which is it? Run back to class and look dumb, or check out where this tunnel leads. I'm for exploring. Fuck class."

"You saw them yesterday. We need to be ready." Lily handles her bat as she speaks. "If they try to get rough with us again, I mean…"

Zach picks up the doorknob and tries if he can at least kind of fit it back into where it was so it will look unbroken at first glance. If not, he'll just take it with him as they go in and Freddy closes the door and then he just tosses it on the ground there. He keeps a handle on his bat, even if he's not sure he'd actually be able to use it against any actual person. Then again, after that thing with the doorknob and the praise he got for it from his friends... He follows the others down the stairs, using his phone for light once the door behind them is closed.

OOC:
Zach, throw a d6 to see if the doorknob can be re-attached in some fashion. On a 1, there’s no hope. On a 2-4, it’s difficult and would take a few minutes (and that’s on the classroom side of the door… I’m presuming you won’t want to do that). On a 5, you can quickly reattach it but any careful visual inspection would immediately reveal it to be broken. On a 6, you can quickly attach it and it looks unbroken.
After trying to re-attach the doorknob, down the steps go the teens. It is hot in the confined space. The humidity is stifling; moisture beads on the painted cement walls and their footsteps scuff and echo slightly as they reach the bottom of the steps and peer down the passage. It goes and goes… stretching on ahead of them for what looks like hundreds of feet — at least! The corridor appears to have something to do with the school’s heating system, as large overhead ducts and a tangle of pipe work line the low ceiling, running in the same direction as the passage itself.

Zach discovers he doesn’t need the light from his phone, as there are ancient-looking sconces with dim yellow light bulbs every fifty or seventy five feet. The place is noisy — there is the general hum and buzz of heavy equipment filling the air.
OOC:
The tunnel is only about six feet wide, and there’s less than seven feet of head clearance if you factor in the pipes and ducts. Do you continue on? Who is armed with what?

Also, everyone please roll Common Knowledge. If you are new to the school, make this roll at -2. Raises will reveal additional information about this space.

Zach fiddles with the doorknob for a moment but when he can't manage to get it to fit back in, he just hides it in the corridor and hopes that nobody notices the change. He's still carrying the baseball bat he used to get them through the door and even though he doesn't need it to light the way, he keeps his phone in hand.
He's sweating way too much in this heat, wearing his thick hoodie, and as he wipes the sweat from his forehead with his sleeve, he suddenly has a thought, "Guys, you think what's going on here, with the teachers and Gromn and all, has somehow something to do with this heat? I mean, it can't be that hard to keep a school from turning into an oven, right? It's weird."
OOC:
I added the doorknob roll to my previous post so I could refer to it here. Rolling Common Knowledge -2

Freddie is a little put out at first that Zach stole the doorknob from him, but ignores that and heads down the stairs. He grips that impressive EASTON baseball bat, the sign of quality, and leads the way.

When Zach asks, he says only, "Aliens," as he heads quickly toward the first doorway he can find.

"Dunno Zach, but we should keep going to the very end. We've got to see this through."

Wiping her brow several times, Emily's glasses threaten to fog up. Her bat slides around in her moist hand, so she tightens her grip, her hand threatening to cramp from doing that.

"Shit. Let's hurry."
OOC:
Benny time!

"Aliens? What kind of aliens do this?" Lily jokes, though not sounding as incredulous as one might expect.

"You think there’s an egg inside all of us? Probably from the lunch food. And it’s going to…

BLEAUGH!!"
she says, mimicking an alien bursting from her chest.

"… any minute now?"

The armed group advances down the old tunnel without hesitation, coming upon a four-way intersection fairly rapidly. Fred knew there were rumors of tunnels beneath the school — something to do with the heating system and the old steam plant that was located a half-mile away. Newer to the school, Emily and Zach had both had it explained to them better when they toured the campus.

The building that is now Boseman High was originally part of a much larger campus of medical, academic and research buildings built back in the early part of the twentieth century, the twenties and thirties. A central steam plant heated all the buildings, and a system of tunnels connected each of the structures. In addition to Boseman, there was the hospital, Boseman General, and the old and now long-abandoned asylum on Birch Street.

Old metal placards with chipped paint on the walls mark clear directions for each of the four passageways: left to the hospital, straight on towards the plant, right to the boarded-up sanitarium, or back the way they had come for the high school.

"I completely forgot about all this," Zach says, only reminded of the details of the tour now that they come across the sign and he and Emily explain what they remember. "Maybe it is a bit harder to keep the school from turning into an oven if it's such a weird, huge network of heating. Where should we go?" He looks over the signs. "In a movie, the core of the problem would be in the old asylum."

"Everyone acting all crazy like this? It’s sure to be the asylum.

They say…"
she pauses for dramatic effect "… that they never cleared all the patients out of there when it closed."

They don’t say that.

"And that a few of them still live out there!"
Jun 28, 2023 10:13 am
"They told us about it at the intro tour of the school," Zach nods. He then lowers his voice into a spooky tone as he continues in his friend's place: "They only had the worst of the worst there. Serial killers, psychopaths, real monsters. And yes, some are rumored to still live there and to crawl through the tunnels connected to the school, hungering for more victims. And the worst, most dangerous and horrible of them all, who some say is still stalking this city to this day... was named Lily Palmer!"
Jun 28, 2023 2:21 pm
"Fucking hell. Guys! Stop! Seriously, the asylum is creepy as fuck but I'd be willing to bet an ounce of Kush that the problem comes from there." Emily nods her head at the asylum sign.

"People are acting nutty. It's obvious which way we should go. Look for signs of recent use in the tunnel." When her right hand starts to cramp she realizes she is gripping her bat like her life depends on it which it very well may. "Who is coming with?"
