Freddie grins at the banter. "Asylum it is. Did you all watch American Horror Story, season 2? Wouldn't that be wicked?"

He points at the pipes. "Hot water heating used to be all the fashion. There is a an old steam plant farther along I think."

OOC:
It’s a painted concrete floor and difficult to discerne tracks and the like, but you can make a group Notice check if you like to look for signs of passage / use. Pick the best among you to roll; the other three can use Support actions if they want (likely also Notice rolls).

Also, I meant to mention before: +1 Benny for everyone for being action-orientated explorers!

Emily glares at Freddie and keeps walking.

As Emily is focusing on the ground, looking for clues where Gromn or anyone might have gone, Zach carefully creeps up on her from behind. Once he's close, he forms his hand into a claw and tries to lightly draw his fingernails over the back of Emily's neck. She seemed creeped out by their goofing out over the asylum before, so he's hoping to give her a little scare.

Zach snorts, clearly amused by the success of his little prank. "Got you," he grins. "Now, any idea which way Gromn went down here?"
Jun 29, 2023 2:41 am
"When I saw him he was leaving and locked up after he went back up into the school."

OOC:
Despite the -2 from being Distracted, Emily passes her Notice test. Zach's Raise, though, means that Emily is Shaken. Doesn't mean much in the moment since she'll recover, but if this was a combat round it would be a significant event.
Even with the jump scare, Emily's keen eyes do pick up some detail when her heart rate comes back down and she catches her breath.

First, there's been a lot of foot traffic going to and fro, between the school and the steam plant. It is hard to tell how many people and how recently, but if Emily was forced to guess she'd say at least a half dozen different prints, as recently as today.

Grime and dust covers the passages that lead to the hospital and the asylum, but otherwise the two corridors share little in common other than their construction and age. The one going to the still-functioning medical building looks rarely but regularly traveled by an individual or two; the tunnel that heads for the asylum is different. It's unlit for one, and the tracks are more of a mish-mash. Quite a number of people appear to have been coming and going.

Finally... there are more than a couple of tracks that look almost like someone has been dragged. Long striations on the floor, both in the main school-plant passage, but also in the asylum corridor.

Lily furrows her brow as Emily points out the whole range of tracks.

"So, this is where we split up and get picked off one by one, right?"

Then she becomes serious; and turns around to the others, bat in hand:

"Looks like there’s something in every direction. No right answer. No wrong answer."

"Okay, I'm starting to not like this either," Zach says, now feeling uncomfortable about the situation as well. When the door had led into a tunnel, this had turned from trespassing into exploring for him, which had been fun. Now, the silly stories he and Lily had made up, combined with the fact that there are actual footsteps - and worse, drag marks - leading to the asylum, are making him nervous. There would probably be a cold shiver down his back, if he wasn't sweating so terribly much underneath his hoodie.

He hesitates, considering it for a long moment, then he takes off the heavy hoodie. He's still wearing a binder, tanktop and T-shirt underneath and he's pretty sure his breasts are well-conceiled even without the hoodie. The light is also pretty bad here, after all, and he does manage in the changing room, whenever he dares to go in there.
As he stuffs his hoodie into the equipment bag, he says, "The footsteps to and from the hospital are probably just regular maintenance. Same with the ones to the steam plant. I was joking earlier, but I think if we want to find out what's wrong here, we have to go to the asylum." He lets out a sigh and inspects the drag marks on the floor for a moment, then checks his phone for signal. "Maybe I should text Noah," he offers. "Ask if he can meet us here. He's pretty cool and if there is trouble, I'm pretty sure he'd be kind of a help."
OOC:
Might be a stretch to assume signal here, but I did roll the best phone provider at the start of the game 😄

"Asylum it is. Things are getting weird, but before you go cocking someone with a baseball bat, let's be sure of our targets. My stepmom might be down here, and other parents. We don't actually know what's going on. Maybe they're just getting extra-maritally sticky and popping XTC. That isn't justification for going all Lily on them." He bumps Lily fondly with his shoulder at the dig.

"But given what almost happened to Emily in the hallway, don't let them grab you."
Jun 29, 2023 4:37 pm
"Freddie, you're gross. Extra ... bah ...nevermind. But yeah, I agree. The asylum is probably where we should be going and we need to be sure of our targets and very careful we don't get grabbed by a lunatic teacher or some.... well things are getting pretty strange. Maybe some patient's ghost is on the loose."

Emily switches hands with the bat and stretches her fingers. "I'm not sure we should involve anyone else at this point, Zach."

"I don't know," Zach says. "I'd feel better with a bit more backup. I thought we were investigating an old boiler room, not an abandoned asylum that looks like people got dragged there recently."

As he's speaking, he opens his messenger app and texts Abby:
Zachary: Heading into the old asylum in town. Connected to the school through tunnels in basement. Will explain later. If I don't text you again in an hour, call Rosie

He then turns on his flashlight to illuminate the way forward. "Freddy, Lily, what do you think?"

"We've tried asking for help. What do we get? Threats from parents, pushed into ditches, ignored by faculty, attacked by faculty. No, if anyone is going to solve this, it's going to be us. We've got a hardened criminal," he flourishes to Emily, "an ace investigative journalist," another to Lily, "Jose Canseco the home run king," a high five for Zach, "and me, the uh, politician. Together, we fight crime."
Jun 30, 2023 3:34 pm
"He's not wrong," she says, agreeing with Freddie. "It's us or nobody, but uh ... I'm not exactly a hardened criminal. Anyway, let's keep moving. We can use my phone too for light."
Jun 30, 2023 3:38 pm
Freddie wraps an arm around Emily's shoulders and whispers into her ear. "Unapologetic, that's my girl," and kisses the side of her head.
Jun 30, 2023 3:49 pm
Despite the tension of the moment, Emily is both surprised and pleased at Freddie's demonstration of affection. "Thanks," is all she can muster, but then whispers back, "I appreciate that Freddie. I do." She took pleasure in his calling her my girl, and a smile crept across her face.

OOC:
Zach, roll a d6 for cell service. Most of you have none, but those with the best carrier have a 1 in 6 chance of getting a text or call out. So on a 6, the message will go to Abby. Otherwise it will show ‘Failed to Send’.
The Asylum

Moving away from the intersection, down the dark, narrow corridor towards the old sanitarium, the teens navigate with the lights on their phones as they go, their senses bristling and skin crawling. The journey is anything but silent — there’s that mechanical background thrum from the steam plant, and the pipes overhead creak and groan with pressure. It’s not long before the intersection behind them is barely visible, a little yellow window in the distance. Mold or something like it spiderwebs over the walls, and the group stops for a moment when they come to a section of wall and ceiling that is cracked and crumbling.

The discolored ceiling is bowed a bit, sagging, and dark earth and roots are visible through the disintegrating concrete in a few places. Lights shined on the damage send a few pale-colored millipedes scrambling for deep crevices, and there’s a moment of concern over just how unstable this section of the tunnel might be.

Beyond, though, one of the more powerful phone lights reveals the end of the passage, maybe forty feet away. There’s a heavy metal door that is brown with rust… and it stands partly open, offering passage within.

"Better put those baseball batting helmets on now," Freddie says, and opens the gear bag to pass them out. "Maybe they'll hide our faces a little in case we're all just stupid and this is entirely on the up and up."

He looks at the other three. "Easy to get back. If things look like too much trouble, we run, okay?"
Jun 30, 2023 5:08 pm
Emily's eyes strain at the cracked open door ahead. "Nope Freddie, we all should put on the helmets. That door is open so..."

Taking a deep breath, Emily wipes her sweaty palms one by one on her jeans as she exchanges the bat from hand to hand. "Look, we already agreed, solving this shit is up to us and no one else. I say we keep going and no running back. And let's all hope that crap on these walls is mold and nothing else, and the tunnel doesn't collapse on us."
