Zach's eyes go wide when he sees that rather intimate interaction between Fred and Emily. He leans in towards Lily. "Did you know that those two... I didn't imagine that, right?" He's not sure what to think about this. Emily told him she might be interested in Fred, but... Am I really this oblivious?

He looks down at his phone again. Failed to Send! He curses quietly, then hits Resend. Maybe they'll hit a spot where the signal will be able to get out at some point.

"Sure, give me a helmet. I don't want to get my face messed up before the Homecoming Dance after all."

On your sheets, please add any new equipment. Helmets, bats, hurling sticks, etc. ;)

Lily makes eyes at Zach, trying to wordlessly communicate with the boy in the same way she does with Wendy.

She clears her throat then, and suits up. The helmet sits big on her head, but she pats it down further onto her shoulders.

"Can someone lock us in there?" Lily asks, inspecting the door on either side to see which way it opens and closes.

Zach blinks at Lily. He realizes that she's trying to do that whole wordless communication thing she does with Wendy, but he doesn't get what she's trying to tell him. If she was Abby, this would work a whole lot better. He shrugs at her, then just watches as she inspects the door.

Seeing the look of confusion on Zach’s face, Lily quickly moves on before the others notice.

Boys…

Lily thinks, her mind wandering to Wendy then.

They’ll never get it…

Entering the Asylum

After taking a moment to get fully equipped, the quartet moves on, walking beneath the crumbling, sagging ceiling to the door beyond. Lily finds that it opens towards her into the tunnel, that it's about three quarters of the way open, and appears to have been recently forced into place. Scrapes and striations on the concrete floor show that it took some amount of force to do that, and that the uneven surface means that it would take quite an effort to close the door, or indeed even budge it further.

A quick flash of LED light shows that the corridor continues on the other side of the door -- a passageway that was once, long ago, painted in a two-tone scheme of light green and dark green. The floor is a checkerboard linoleum, and looks like it has rotted or crumbled away in places. Ahead, no more than twenty feet, are a set of steps going up.

The four slip into that space, and as they approach the bottom of the stairs (there's nowhere else to go), they note two things. First, the steps ascend about twenty feet to an open -- and very dark -- doorway. Second, several small puddles of a foul-smelling, yellow liquid mark a few of the lower steps.
OOC:
I only see one player who has listed their new gear on their sheet. It hasn't come up in the narrative *exactly* who has a bat and a helmet, and I want to clarify that -- is everyone armed that way?.

Emily dons a helmet and looks at the door. "Fuck I hope not. That would be like my worst nightmare. Locked in an asylum forever." She wonders how Zach can think of the dance at a time like this because she's pretty freaked out.

Added the helmet and bat to my sheet
"When this place was still running, they probably would have loved to lock me up here," Zach muses without elaborating. He clears his throat nearvously, then grips the bat in his right hand and the phone in his left tighter. "I'll take the lead," he offers, trying to sound braver than he felt. "Freddy, you watch our back. Girls, you stay in the middle. Not that you need protection or anything." He frowned at the way the words sounded out of his mouth and course-corrected: "I just don't want Lily to have immediate skull-bashing access to any janitor or urban explorer we might run into.

"I don't even have a date for Homecoming. What a disaster. At least you all have that sorted out." He shakes his head, images of Priya in a fancy colorful Hindu dress flash before his eyes, then he glances at Emily. "You girls will dance with me, though, right?"

He is about to sneak in first through the half open door, bat held so it doesn't bonk on something. "Okay, show time." When Zach makes the plan, he holds back, letting the others go. Better to act as a team than freelance.

"Wait," Zach says. "You don't have a date?" He can't stop a laugh from escaping. "You're not seriously saying I got a date and Fred Solomon didn't? I thought girls were lining up for you. I thought..." He glances to Emily as he shuts himself up.

This was a good opportunity to sneak in a comment without anyone else taking much notice until Zach chimed in. "I'll go with you, Freddie." Why the notice or lack thereof mattered she wasn't sure. Maybe because it wasn't a formal invitation. She also made a mental note to ask Zach about his comment. It seemed strange. But now it was time to investigate the asylum so in she stepped.

"Well, that solves that," Zach chuckles as he continues taking the lead. The way Zach sees it, he has two options right now, panicking or joking. The second seems more appealing. "But that's awesome. You two going together, me and Lily going together." He hadn't been there when Lily denied having a date for the dance yet and in his mind, it's already all agreed upon. "Well, and Aaron and Wendy. It's going to be awesome. If we survive today."

"Oh, I thought you and Zach we're going or I would have asked you. You're not? That's great! Yes, I'd love to go with you Emily." To Lily he says, "Sorry, Lily, I'll have to withdraw the offer to take you and Wendy both." He laughs, knowing that they had flat out rejected that plan, but he can't resist teasing her.

The nervous girl lets Freddie work through the dance discussion and normally would have been delighted that she invited herself in such an innocuous manner but fear was taking precedence at the moment.

"Ugh. This place is really giving me the creeps."

"What - no sign that says "I’m Crazy For You? Be My Homecoming Date." the girl says, holding up an imaginary promposal placard. "Haven’t you guys any sense of romance?" she follows up with an exaggerated sigh.

"I’m Nuts About You." could work too. She sucks air between her teeth as she tries to think of some other examples.

"They locked me in a padded cell but I want to Homecome with you?" Zach suggests. Then he frowns. "No, that one doesn't work, I think."

Then he suddenly starts laughing. He falls back a bit so he's next to Lily and whispers to her, "People can't know I'm gay. Please be my straightjacket." He grins at her, waiting for a reaction. "Oh come on," he then says. "That was funny."

"Alright, that was pretty good!" she responds, hoping the others don’t ask to get in on the joke.

"We doing this thing then, or what?" she says, willing the others further down the tunnel. "Let’s crack some heads!"

"Too soon, Lily, too soon by far," Freddie says with a wink.

Voices quiet a little once all four teens have passed through the threshold, and into the asylum itself. Down the dark, musty corridor they go, to the steps that lead up to the rest of the old building. The air is still and cooler here; evidently the steam plant isn't pushing the same level of heat to the sanitarium that it is the school. The group avoids the puddles of rank-smelling fluid on the steps as they climb, and in short order find themselves (after listening carefully) slipping through the open doorway atop the stairs -- and into the lowest level of the Boseman Insane Asylum.

Fred, Lily, Emily and Zach are in a long corridor going left and right that is as dark as the tunnels they've come from. A set of steps across the hall continues upwards to the ground floor -- the kids are clearly in a basement -- and many doors are visible to the left and right, on both sides of the hallway, lit up by phones held aloft. The doors look identical to one another -- each is of heavy construction, has a robust bolt that shows they lock from the outside, and has a small sliding metal panel at about head height.

In both directions, the hall stretches on into the darkness.
OOC:
Up the stairs to the next level, down the hallway left or right, investigate some doors (there are 20 or so), or something else entirely?
Jul 3, 2023 3:45 pm
Freddie whispers, "Check one of these doors? See any footprints in the goo?" He moves to the first one, and then when the others are ready (unless they object) will try and slide the door panel open and shine a light inside.

He's half convinced that the aliens have kidnapped people and are storing them. Or not, and there is some big orgy rave dance party going on further inside. Those are the two possibilities.
