"Fucking hell, it stinks in here." Emily hits the button that simultaneously drops the widows of the van and peels out of the parking lot.
"I'm going to drive nice and steady so we don't attract any cops. Not that they won't swarm us when we get there. We have from now until then to figure out what we plan to say. And Lily's right. We should just tell them the truth."

There is panic creeping into his voice, even if he's not in full-on panic mode yet. "We can't just... Fuck, I can't go to prison!"

Freddie listens to the others, and has no answers. "Look, if you want to get away with something, you have to explain what happened in a way that doesn't contradict the evidence, right? So yeah, we tell them everything. We were looking for missing people, I saw Gromm head into that back room, and so we followed him. We found that Gromm had held Priya in that holding cell, she called for help, and we let her out, then Gromm attacked us. We fought back, and ... Okay, why did we have baseball bats?"

Tensions are high inside the mini van as the kids debate their next move, and as several of them finally have a moment to check their phones, which have service again.
Fred has a note from his sister in the hospital, asking where Belinda was... telling him that she's ready to be discharged, but that the nurses can't reach their stepmom.
Debby: Do you know where she is? She told the nurses she had some appointment at the school, but that she'd be free by mid-morning.
Lily has a quick text from Wendy:
Wendy: Back from the thing with my mom! Where are you guys? I thought you'd still be at the cafeteria?
Wendy: Hullo? Lil?
Zach, stressed about Gromn and, well, everything, sees a pile of texts when he checks his smart phone.
Abby: You're what? Going to an asylum!?
Abby: Tunnels. What the heck are you guys doing? You're with your friends I hope?
Abby: Hello? Zach?
Abby: Okay, I'll text Rosie if I don't hear in an hour
Abby: Texting Rosie!!
Rose: Zach
Rose: Zach

Rose: where are u?
Rose: Abby reached out
Rose: said you were heading 4 the old aslym

The last message was ten minutes ago, and is particularly worrying for the boy... but when he looks up from his phone and out the back window, back towards the school, he sees something else that jars him even more. The distinctive chrome grill of the big black Escalade. The vehicle the two guys he had the run in with on the side of the road were traveling in... and it's right behind them.
Emily's phone buzzes too. She manages to glance at it, and sees that she has messages from her brother, Steve. The first text is a picture of a pretty freshman in a spaghetti-strapped tank top, the next few are messages from the boy.
Steve: know her
Steve: shes hot right
Steve: can you introduce us
Lily sees the SUV as well -- in fact, she watched it pull from a parking spot on the street into a sharp U-turn so it could pursue the kids. Something is up with that Cadillac!

"Brothers. Jesus." Emily shakes her head in disgust and tosses the phone into the tray between the front seats. "Does every guy think about sex every freakin' minute of the day?"
Her raised voice is an outlet for the tension that grips her body like a vice as she tries to navigate the road before her, listening to her friends tap frantically on their phones.
"What? What truck?" Emily turns white when she glances in her rearview mirror. "Fuck me. Does this crap ever end? I can't lose them if that's what anyone is thinking. Not in this rattletrap. And not with you know who there. Maybe they will fuck off when we reach the hospital."

Zach still holds on tight to his phone as if it was some sort of lifeline, but he looks up at Emily. "Are you sure you don't know what they want?" he asks her. "I mean, they're asking about your family. And when I asked you about them, you immediately told Steve and left school with him." He hesitates and then lies, "We shouldn't have any secrets. We're friends."

"Our own safety?" Zach asks Emily. "These guys are already after us and I almost had to go to the hospital the other day because they attacked me. I think it's a bit too late to keep us in the dark 'for our safety'." He frowns, looking back at the car. "But if they're after you, maybe you can leave the car and we'll make them think you're still in here. Hide your hair, take off your glasses... I'd offer you my hoodie but I doubt you want to wear that. Then you and Lily could take Priya into the hospital while Fred and I drive somewhere else, hopefully making them think you're still driving."
