Sure enough, Lily finds the scene inside the hospital a chaotic one. The shot was heard and people have scrambled back from the entrance, and the man with the phone is both talking to the 911 dispatcher and the check-in clerk in front of him. When the teen adds her drama to it all, help is quick to come.
Outside the Hospital, Moments Later
By the time two squad cars and, paradoxically, an ambulance, arrive, the hospital staff are already treating both Zach and Fred, and are preparing to move them inside.
Emily and Lily find themselves on the front line of explaining what happened as the paramedics and more junior officers take care of the two injured men from the black SUV. Sheriff Akins — well known for his hatred of kids, deviants, and anything remotely enjoyable, and the far warmer and more reasonable Officer Bentley talk with the two teens near the back of one of the squad cars after offering them water.


Some distance away, Zach is on a gurney being wheeled into the building while Fred walks beside him, holding a bandage to his face.
"We’ll get the hospital to call your parents right away," a paramedic is saying as they pass through the main entrance, leaving Emily and Lily to their fate.
