In the Hospital
Fred, released first and his face bandaged, is just coming out of the bathroom when he hears voices that cause him to lie low and listen for a moment.
"She's doing fine, Sheriff," a nurse is saying above the sound of shoes on the tile floor. "We thought her ribs were broken, but the x-rays came back negative. She's lucky though -- it was a violent blow, and she'll be badly bruised and sore for days. If you want to get her statement, you--"
"I thought it was the two boys who were hurt in the altercation," Sheriff Akins says, a bit of confusion edging his gravelly voice.
"Oh," the nurse says. "Well... you see... maybe you can talk to Zach about that."
"I will," Akins says, "then I'll want to talk with the Solomon boy."
Peeking out, Fred sees the pair walk down the hallway, then knock briefly on a door before entering it.
Zach's Room
Zach is resting in a bed with a hospital gown on when a nurse lets Sheriff Akins into the room. Without his binder -- which the ER staff cut off of him -- Zach displays features which clearly suggest his birth gender.
Akins approaches the bed, frowning, his eyes fixed on Zach's chest as he asks, "Zach Tidwell? Just involved in a scuffle outside with a couple of guys from out of town?"
