The Woods on the Other Side of the Banks (Fred and Emily)

"Got you!" Unger sneers, catching hold of Emily's arm in an iron grip. When she tries to pull away, the big man wrenches her limb violently, trying to break her arm and make her drop the case!

OOC:

You're Shaken and Wounded, Emily! Mark your sheet and please make a STR check at -3 (-2 for his called shot and -1 for being Wounded); if you succeed, you can hang onto the case.

Either way, you're up next and will need to roll Spirit to try and unshake. Remember if you fail you just can't attack or take a formal action. You can still speak, run, etc.

"It's not a joke," Zach insists. "I'm so scared I'll never get Rose back. She can be the most frustrating person in the world, but she's still my little sister, you know?"
Tears fill his eyes as he says, "And we can't go to the police... They wouldn't believe a story like this. And I... And Gromn attacked us. I defended my friends against him. He hurt Priya and so I hit him with a baseball bat and... I think he's dead. And then this slug came out of him. It's not a virus, Aaron. It's some kind of parasite."

Well, if he doesn't believe me, then I guess straight to jail for murder with Zach

"Hey!" Aaron says as Zach starts to cry, "Hey, I believe you! I guess I just don't want to... this sounds so crazy." He's perhaps about to say something about Gromn or the idea of parasites as they travel down the road, but something takes the boy's attention and he squints behind his glasses.

Down the road a quarter mile or so, red and blue lights are flashing -- there appears to be a police car blocking the road.

When Aaron says that he believes him, Zach looks at him in surprise. He wipes his eyes, then puts his hand on Aaron's on the gear shift. "I know it does," he says. "Thank you for believing me anyway. I'm glad I have you."
He looks ahead at the flashing lights and frowns. "Is there a way around them? I don't want to talk to them if we can avoid it."

Sheriff Akins

Aaron keeps looking for a moment as he decelerates, then he shakes his head as the cop on the road in his headlights raises both his hands, then waves the car to the side of the road.

"That police cruiser is completely blocking the road," the boy says as he pulls over and comes to a stop twenty feet from the SUV with the flashing lights -- and the lawman that Zach now sees is none other than Sheriff Akins.

Akins illuminates the cabin of the car with a very bright maglight as he approaches, making the two squinting teens turn away briefly from the light.

"I know this guy," Zach whispers to Aaron, trying to sound reassuring, even if he knew how much of an asshole Akins was and the fact that it was him was the opposite of reassuring to Zach himself. "Let me do the talking. Just be polite." He hesitated, then added, "And don't mention that we're gay." Zach did not have the feeling that Akins was much of an ally.

He waited for Akins to reach the rolled down driver's side window of Aaron's car, then said, "Good evening, sir. Can we help you with something? Aaron and I are just heading to his place, to watch a movie."

Sheriff Akins

"Zachary Tidwell," the Sheriff says as he gets to the open window, blasting Zach full-on with his high-intensity light.

Shifting it briefly to Aaron, nearly blinding the teen, he gruffly adds, "And whoever this is. What's your name, boy?"

Aaron Connery

"Aaron Connerly, sir," the driver answers, blinking rapidly and looking away from the light. He's about to speak when Zach pipes up.

Sheriff Akins

"A movie, huh?" Akins says, his expression belying his suspicion. "Not tonight, you two. Out of the car. Right now."

Aaron Connery

Aaron glances at Zach, then says, "But officer, we were just--"

Sheriff Akins

"GET OUT," the Sheriff growls, "OF THE GODDAMNED CAR."

His hand is on his pistol as he steps in closer, hitting both boys with that brutally bright light.

Zach swallows nervously. He meets Aaron's eyes and promises, "It's all going to be okay." It feels like a lie. What could be going on here? Is Akins one of them? Did Not-Rose call the police on Zach? Did Lily? Did they find Gromn?
Zach nervously opens the passenger side door and steps outside, his hands raised. "What's this about, Sheriff?"

Connery turns off his car and gets out as well, and the Sheriff motions both boys towards his blue and white SUV. When they begin to comply, he walks back to his vehicle and opens the back door so they can both climb in.

"I'll explain at the station. Right now let's just get you two off the road and safe."

"Are we under arrest, Sheriff?" Zach asks, looking at the vehicle. He does not like this at all. "We didn't do anything." His eyes meet Aaron's again and Zach does his best to hide his own fear at the situation and look reassuring for the sake of the boy he likes.

He pulls Unger forward and knee kicks him in the face, Muay Thai style. Or rather in a clumsy imitation of something he saw in a late night YouTube MMA binge.

Lily shivers; the hair on her arms standing on end, and goosebumps running up and down her body. The adrenaline of the moment sets her shaking. It takes effort to swallow that feeling as Wendy undoes button after button. She wills herself to be steady; to stop shaking as if they stood in a freezing cold bedroom.

The warmth of the bedcovers beckons, and Lily takes the girl by the hand, familiar with the messy geography of her room even in the dark, and leads her to the bed.

Until Wendy interrupts the mood with an eventual phone call!

Akins raps the side of the vehicle loudly to answer Zach. "Just get in. You heard me say I'd explain at the station, Tidwell. You're not under arrest. Now get in."

Aaron gives Zach a look back -- he's definitely concerned, maybe more than a little afraid -- but he climbs into the back of the Chevy Tahoe and slides over to make room for his friend.

Letting Emily go -- it's clear than the man's main concern was that she let the case go -- Kelly Unger's burly father takes the awkward hit from Fred and just shrugs it off.

"What the hell was that?" the man asks, backing up a few steps so he can roll up his sleeves. "You hit like a pussy, Fred. My girl hits twice that hard!" A glance around tells the man that there are still quite a few squirming creatures on the ground. "Belinda!" he shouts as he faces off with Fred. "Fucking get up! Help them, put them back in the case!"
