In Bentley's Police Cruiser (Lily)

"Officer Bentley, what is this about?" Lily's father asks, nodding at his daughter in the back seat, through the mesh divider.

Officer Yvonne Bentley

"I don't know," the woman admits. "There's something going on tonight, some investigation, but I haven't been part of it. But you heard the Sheriff, he believes you have information that can help, Lily."

Lily's mom isn't satisfied. "Officer, you're not talking us -- not taking our daughter somewhere dangerous, right?"

Bentley shakes her head. "I won't do that, ma'am. You have my word. To Serve and Protect, right?"

"A gun safe inside, fuck, I've been shot enough for one forever. So nothing we can use even as clubs in the backyard?"

He begins to look for anything, even a chunk of 2x4 that he can use to club any bad guys. A shovel, a loose fence board, Terry Fox's prosthetic leg?

"Um. Dunno, Why don't we go back there and see? I don't spend a whole lot of time back there. Maybe some rocks or wood logs. Steve has had a small fire back there from time to time."

Emily slinks around the house to the back, looking into the windows as she can until she reaches the back, checks for activity inside and then commences her yard for anything that might serve as a weapon.

"I have no fucking clue where my parents are," she whispers. "And if that's Steve slumped over in there...." she won't finish that sentence. Won't even contemplate it. She doesn't hate her brother. Not really.

Lily pulls out her phone and quickly sends off another text to everyone:

Lily: In cruiser with Bentley and parents. "Developing situation" at school 🫠

"Right. Protect and Serve." Lily says then, trying to sound chirpy and confident. "Will the whole department be there? Is this like in those movies?"

Fred opens the shed, and pulls out an orange axe, still with a price tag on it. "Yxa. I didn't know IKEA made axes?" He removes the plastic edge guard and tosses that back in the shed.

"Okay, let's check that out. You've got the big rock, you better lead." He snickers and smacks her on the butt playfully.

Emily's House

After arming themselves, Emily and Fred let themselves into the house quietly. It's mostly dark as the pair creeps into the kitchen wielding rock and axe. The sound of a television playing is noticeable instantly, no surprise given the scene Fred spied through the window.

Emily is frowning at the open and empty pizza box on the counter. A big one, extra-large, from Vinny's... and next to it, a handwritten note from her mother.

Emily! Your father and I have had a really stressful week, and need to start the weekend early. We're headed to Soaring Eagle for a long weekend. I left some gas and food money in the envelope on the fridge -- share it with your brother. I know school has been stressful this week as well -- treat yourselves! See you on Sunday!

"Well, it's not like there are that many of us," the officer answers Lily with a slight smile. "And to be honest, there's not much about policing that's like it is in the movies."

On the device Lily holds tightly in her hands, there comes no answer from the others. Still no answer! Where is Zach? Is he just ignoring her? The distance to the school is narrowing...

Freddie thumbs a quick reply and pocketed his silenced but vibrating phone.

Fred: Send deets.

He leads their sneak into the living room, as Emily reads her family note with its strange, uniform printing. Ax gets ready for chopping.

"Ok, Emily whispers. "My parents literally never do this. Something is very wrong."

She hefts the rock a little higher and puts it in a death grip as she follows Freddie into the living room.

She also misuses the word "literally" like every teen.

Emily says, conveniently forgetting about all the times when her parents have done exactly this.

Following her axe-wielding boyfriend (?!) into the living room, she finds... her brother Steve, dozing on the couch. Pizza crusts are scattered around, there are a bunch of rolling papers on the coffee table, there's some kind of spring break college girl trash on the television, and the boy is snoring away in his tighty-whities.

It's a lovely scene.

Emily puts the stone down on a table and glares at the boy, the source of constant annoyance.

"Do you ever think of anything else besides girls? That won't get you a job later in life. Anyway, clean up this mess. Dad will kill you if he sees garbage all over the place. Ugh. I need a glass of water. Want one?" she asks Freddie and snatches the money her parents left on the way to the kitchen.

Freddie lets the axe hang down, out of sight. It's a good axe, and they might be on the way to some kind of cop party, as he waits for Lily to provide more than just a few crumbs. Still, out of all of them, she's the most level headed, and strategic, so he tries to find where Zack might be broadcasting from. He tries Insta, X, even Tumblr, looking for where the boy might be sending out the signal. He doesn't check Facebook, though, because he's not a grandma.

"Em, Lily says Zach is going to broadcast something. He tell you what's the what?"

"What? No. Do I look like I've been staring at my phone? I dunno, maybe I missed something." Glugging down her glass of water she hands one to Freddie and grabs her phone. The light casts an eerie shadow under the flickering kitchen as she flicks through her messages.

"Oh yeah .. yup. I got a text. What situation? Fucked if I know." Looking out towards the living room the flustered teen sighs. "Shouldn't Steve be waking up by now? Let's go check on the idiot."
