She couldn’t help herself…
Lily stood at the front gate of ‘Boseman Elementary’. The heaviness of the first day’s backpack threatened to send her toppling backwards. Carefully selected crayons, pencil case and lunchbox mixed with books and other supplies after a summer away from school.
She hyped herself up to try take that first step towards the school, and away from her parents who watched hopefully from behind. No words of rushing but kind encouragement came as they practiced their in her own time… philosophy.
Then an arm linked her own.
"Let’s go!" Wendy chimed, turning briefly to wave off her own parents before marching Lily a step or two forward. The girl dug her heels in, but her friend wouldn’t have it. Stopping for only a second, Wendy whips about and smiles:
"It’s okay! Come on! Let’s get seats beside each-other! Quick before they’re all gone!"
Lily barely has time to turn and wave off her parents, who are already in conversation with Wendy’s. Their fathers… worked together back then. She thinks they did at least…
Then she’s carted across the playground in about five seconds and zipped into the classroom by her best friend.
