Fred's mom is right next to Zach, and she looks like her failed attack on him has unbalanced her. He tries to take advantage of that, pointing his alien gun thing at her and pulling the trigger.

For a minute, Emily feels like she should stay down rather than try to get up and help her friends and perhaps the world. But that's so selfish!

Zach hears Lily's voice in his head, reminding him that he needs to fight, that he needs to be there to save Rosie. But he can't. He's fought this paralysis as hard as he can and still failed. Tears form in his eyes as he sees the slug inch closer and closer to his mouth and he starts to feel hopeless.
