Period 2 - 930AM

Mr. Polensky

The room grows warm as the minutes tick by, pencils scratching and erasers erasing. It almost seems like the heat is on, but then the bell rings and Mr. Polensky wordlessly collects the tests. (He'd only answered Zach, earlier, with a deadpan look.) When the students, some of them disheartened by how hard the test was, start to flie out, the teacher just walks to Mr. Edge's desk, where he opens a drawer and deposits his armfull of papers.

OOC:

Failures are just that. Fred will end up with a C or a B... Zach gets a perfect grade and an A+. And hey, for that crazy roll, Zach, take +1 Benny. Speaking off -- you'll need to adjust your sheets I see, as you can have more than three Bennies.

Have a scene here where you talk and then have to head off to different classes. We'll resume at lunchtime shortly.

"That was great!" Zach announces as the group gathers outside the classroom, a huge grin on his face. "I hope every test at this school will be as easy as this one."

Emily shakes her head as she looks at the first page of the test and then the next...did she study the wrong material or what? Sure she can skate through half the test, do it in her sleep almost, but what was this? And this?

Laying her forehead in her hand, the page almost swimming before her eyes she resolves to do the best she can and make it up later.

Relieved by the bell she rushes into the hall. She needs air and her blood almost boils over when Zach mentions the test was great.

"It wasn't great and it wasn't easy, Zach come on." Ordinarily she'd let something like that go but she was very disappointed in herself and her anger boiled up and took a swing at Zach.

"Oh," Zach says when he sees Emily's reaction and realizes that not everyone felt the same way he did about the test. "Shoot, sorry, I... I guess I just studied the right stuff."
He turns to Freddie and puts a hand on his shoulder. "How did you fare? Did my notes help at all?"

"Well, whatever…" Lily says, to no one and everyone, as she leaves the class.

"He can’t be bothered to show up and give us the test himself. It should have been delayed."

And then she lets out a deep billow of air, and tries to shake things off.

"It’s just the first test. Who cares." and she meant it.

"Anyway… Spanish should be easy." she says, to the others, trying to chirp up.

"Oh! Zach! Can you swing by the paper later and help me move some copies to the cafeteria? Pleeease! Sorry to ask!"

Her words say one thing, but the eyes she gives him tell another story.

"Uhm," Zach turns his head to look at Lily. Why is she asking him? Freddie is right there and he's clearly the stronger one between them. But when he looks at Lily, there's something in her eyes that tells him there is more to it than just help moving stuff. "Sure," he agrees uncertainly. "Meet you there at the start of lunch break?

Freddie scowls as he leaves the test. He did alright, but clearly Mr. Edge was punishing them for something. The surest way to keep them from their university dreams was to crash their GPAs. Hopefully he does better on the SATs when they come up, but this was a real blow to his plans. I've gotta get out of this place, if it's the last thing I ever do. The only consolation is that Emily looks more miserable than he feels, so it clearly wasn't his nerves. He pulls a bottle of antacids from his shoulder bag and pops too.

"Ugh, I don't feel well. I better go find Wendy, maybe she can rub my temples." He throws the unexpected shot over at Lily, after "The Look" she gave him earlier.

Emily sighs when Zach responds to her angry snap. She wishes people would shut up about the test already. She doesn't do well at failing at anything let alone her best subject. Maybe she should lay off the toking for awhile and be nicer. Besides it wasn't good for business.

"Hey, sorry Zach. I'm having a bad day and it's barely started. Ugh!"

What's with Freddie now?

She shrugs her shoulders when he makes the comment about Wendy and heads to class.

"Gracias!" Lily chimes, clearly happier now that Zach has agreed to help. She spins on her heel, waving the rest goodbye as she heads off to Spanish!

For Fred, she reserves a beautifully cast middle finger, into which she pours all of her annoyance at the test. Her face is all smiles, as she doesn’t rise to the bait.

She knows that by lunch they’ll all be their usual selves again, with stories of the morning’s classes to swap and share.

Boseman High School Shenanigans: Episode 1

Period 4 - 1130am (Lunch B)

The quartet of friends all go their separate ways after math, heading off to their respective classes -- two of them, in fact, before the 'B' lunch period that starts at 11:30am. Lily has Language Arts with Wendy before they split and the freckled teen heads to her German class with Zach; Emily and Freddie have Mr. Lee's painfully boring history class, then they both end up in poly sci -- with Mr. McKenzie's often entertaining and sometimes inappropriate antics. Fred sees Priya in that class as well, and her pointed ignoring of him makes it really hard to concentrate. Almost as much as the skirt and the fitted tee worn by his former squeeze.

After the slightly weird experience in first period, the rest of Monday morning is mostly same-old same-old -- there's a routine already, even though school hasn't been in for a full month yet. The jokers joke, the flirters flirt, the wallflowers try to not be noticed, the rebels either just don't care, or pretend they don't when in fact they really do.

As the bell rings and the lunch period starts, the four friends come back together...

Boseman High School Shenanigans: Episode 1

After German class, Zach wanders the halls on autopilot as he thinks about his teachers' weird behavior today and finds himself already with the hand on the cafeteria door handle when he realizes he promised Lily to help her out. He quickly turns around and searches for the rooms of the school paper instead. He hasn't been there before so it takes him a couple of minutes before he gets to it. As he approaches it, he remembers that strange look on Lily's face when she asked him to come here earlier, like there was clearly some other motive behind the request. As he knocks on the door, certain that Lily would already have gotten here before him, he closes his eyes and silently prays that she's not about to confess a crush on him or something. He's not sure he'd know how to navigate that.

"There you are!" comes the flustered cry of Lily, as Zach opens the door. She already holding a bundle of papers, which she pushes into his arms quickly.

"This is prime time for us, you know? Lots of traffic through the cafeteria at lunch." she says, grabbing up her own bundle of papers and closing the door of the room behind them.

With a sigh, she sets off. She pushes individual papers into the hands of students she passes in the hall.

She reads the front page headline with an exaggerated sigh.

"Not much of a story, is it?" her eyes search for Zach’s.

"‘One hundred year old woman dies’. Doesn’t scream 2022, does it?"

Zach dutifully takes the pile shoved into his hands, then reads over the title when Lily comments on it. "Well, it is news. She was pretty important," he says, not sounding convinced. "Not sure what you mean by 'doesn't scream 2022'. I mean, this literally happened in 2022." He shrugs. "I guess you could write an article about how monarchies shouldn't exist anymore in the 21st century, but we don't even live in one. Not sure how relevant that would be to your readership." He keeps watching Lily's face as they're walking and talking, trying to get any hint of what this might be leading towards.

Zach tries to offer papers to passing students as the two are walking but without Lily's enthusiasm and urgency behind it, he goes ignored and the pile in his arms does not shrink, unlike Lily's. "You sound like you have something in mind?" he suggests.

"Well…" she says, turning the corner and then standing in the doorway of the busy cafeteria. Not a second passes before someone barges passed.

"Asshole. Well…" she continues "… just have a think about it. If you think there’s a story that needs to be told around here, Wendy and I would love to hear it!"

She drops a stack of papers on the closest table to the exit. And then she grabs the other stack off Zach, and plops them down alongside. She meets his gaze as they pass off the papers.

"Just think about it!"

Zach blinks at her in surprise. He thinks for a moment, then says, "I can't think of anything right now but if you want, I'll try to think about it." He genuinely tries to come up with any idea but comes up empty. He glances over to their group table and already wants to suggest to just join the others there but then doesn't. He still has the feeling there might have been something else. After all, Lily could have just asked the full group to brainstorm ideas if that was all. He puts a hand on her shoulder and squeezes supportively for a moment. "If you do have any ideas, feel free to run them by me any time." He puts on a playful grin for a moment. "And no worries. If they suck, I won't tell anyone."
Then he nods to the table. "Let's go see what weird game Fred dug out today?"

Freddie chews his antacids. Ever since the accident he's been a nervous wreck, no matter how well he conceals it from the student body with his practiced suave charm. After the poor math performance though, he's greener than usual.

"Emily, that was way harder than we prepared for. I think I did okay, but oh my god that's going to wreck my average. I need comfort food, a sub sandwich or something, maybe from that Vietnamese shop on third? You want to come?"

He wonders briefly what she looks like without those Dorkmaster 3000 eyeglasses.

"Don't worry. It's just the first one. I'm sure if you ask nicely, Mr. Edge will give you a chance to make it up. Maybe some extra work or something. Don't laugh but your tutor studied the wrong material."

Emily was unsure of what to do next. She didn't want to be pushy but she really needed to move some product if she was ever going to start her own operation. She also was developing a crush on the boy. This one was at least attainable unlike her infatuation with Mr. Edge.

"I have an idea, Freddie. It's not comfort food exactly but how about we smoke a joint after school?" Emily's mouth went dry. It looked like her nerves were starting to jangle too.

She quickly added, "It really helps to calm frayed nerves and you seem a little... um ... tense, if you don't mind me saying so."

She caught Freddie studying her and managed to fend off a blush as she waited for an answer to what she hoped wasn't too forward a question..

"At lunch time, or after school? Wow. You know, that sounds really good. I can drop my sister's off at home then we can go down to the riverside. That should be a good spot."

He shrugs. His experience with pot has been a few tokes mainly for show at a party.
