Chapter 8 - Space truckers...

After a week relaxing at Balbet Station, the regional corporate headquarters for Balbet Mining Co., you are heading back to the asteriod base to meet with Dancy.

Once landed at the station, you make your way up to her office.

"Well, I have to say, you guys must be the luckiest scavengers I know. I knew we had long odds on getting weapons or such, but I never expected to get this amount of construction materials. That ship was full of durasteel plates and beams. Not to mention two full containers of tools, you could outfit a construction battalion with that ship and they'd be able to build almost anything. " Dancy pauses for a second and smiles. "To be honest, I really expected you to grab the first thing you saw and I'd be giving you 10,000 credits to spilt. Instead, I'm giving you 10,000 credits each and seeing if you'll take another 1000 each to deliver the ship for me? All that stuff is so normal and unmarked, we can run it through normal shipping locations without drawing a raised eyebrow."

Like a teachers pet, AD-hoc is the first to speak up. Apologies for answering your question, with questions, but where would we be delivering? Also, would new jobs be available there? Last are we delivering the goods, or the goods and the . . . liberated ship?

Ken is strutting, preening even, he has a pair of slightly odd leather-style gloves that look a bit comical on his Rodian hands with their sucker fingers, and he's ostentatiously displaying a new, heavily modified blaster on his hip - it's inlaid with silvery metal filigree that is frankly a bit vulgar. Still, he seems very pleased with himself.

'Always happy to work with you Dancy,' he says with an overly confident smile. 'Just show us the destination and we'll get the goods there.' He flips out his blaster, spins it, and points it off to the side, mouthing 'Pow.'

A heavily armed and armored figure enters the room. An amalgamation of various trooper armor parts fit together to make one whole suit of black and white armor. Or rather, they would except that this armor has been painted with a green camouflage, the helmet grinning with a Nexu's maw. The peak of a jetpack can just be seen behind it.

Laying his newly modified rifle over his shoulder, Nox removes his helmet with the other hand revealing a familiar grin of his own.

"Ah, were we going for normal and unmarked? I must have missed that memo. Nox shrugs his shoulders. I'm confident that we can deliver the goods though, no problem."

After seeing all the upgraded gear his team has, AD-hoc is starting to feel under-equipped. All his gear was internal. He made a note to get something more flashy next time they shopped for gear.

Dancy smiles at the Bravado in the room, "Unfortunately AD-hoc, that amount of goods would be hard to move without the ship. I've made a deal with the buyer, there's a fair chance we'll get the ship back once he's done. In the immediate future, Pergano can follow you to Celanon in the Gheist, once you make the delivery, your free to move about the galaxy. Just don't forget, my deal with Isotech for this base was to cut you in, as part of the fee for securing the place. So fuel and repairs, within reason, are covered and there'll be quarterly payments for you. Not to mention, I'll probably always have somewhere that needs something 'recovered'.

Ken is momentarily lost for words at Nox's new getup, smoothing down the plastoid plates in his repaired and patched up clothing. He mutters something under his breath, 'Peetch lapti hataw,' shaking his head and fingering his silver blaster.

But he soon cheers up, pressing his hands together and letting little sparks play between his fingers. 'Yes, when do we leave? I think we've had enough rest. Time for some action!'

"Excellent! Let's get this baby flying. I promise that I'll try and keep things going a little more smoothly this time." Nox laughs with his last statement.

"Maybe we'll have some time to think about our next destination during our trip. Plenty of wild things to get into." Nox winks mischievously at Ken before putting his helmet back on and heading towards the delivery ship.

AD-hoc reminds Pergano to be gentle wit the Geist, as the new computer has just been installed. Then he follows Nox to board the new ship.

You re-board the medium freighter and after a quick check of the systems are ready to go. Ken sweeps the cargo bay and can tell the crates have been moved around a bit from Dancy's inventory. But everything looks in order and ready to go.

Nox pilots the ship up and out of the asteroid landing bay. He notices the Ghest lift just a few minutes behind them. With no one chasing you, plotting the astrogation course is almost relaxing. In no time, you have it plotted and have jumped out of the system. Celanon is 'local' but on a different trade route. It takes about 8 hours to make the jump.

Dropping out of hyperspace at Celanon you can tell this is another busy world. You can spot ships heading in from several directions. Celanon City, the capital, has over 50 million residents and the city is full of 100+ story buildings to make space for everyone. Getting permission to land is a bit lengthy, but overall routine. Before to long, you've landed in on of the thousands of Trader Bays at the spaceport.

During the trip, AD-hoc would just make sure his new ascension gear was installed properly. When landed he ask "Remind me, are we delivering the ship, or is someone coming to pick it up?"

Ken's taken the opportunity to check out any rumours or information about Rodian clan activity in the area of Celanon. In particular, The Yiyar and Chattza clans. On the one hand he doesn't want to get caught unawares by someone who holds a grudge against him. On the other hand he's spoiling for a fight.

Sitting behind the controls to avoid anything unexpected, even in hyperspace, Nox mostly takes his time to make sure all of his gear is properly integrated is in as good of condition as it will probably ever seen again.

Once landed, Nox turns to whoever might also be on the bridge with him. "So, deliveries aren't normally my thing. Is there somewhere that we need to check in here?"

Nox thinks for a moment, his brain apparently attached to dial-up today. "Ah, that's right! We're calling Caleb for our drop-off. I'll give him a ring." Nox types in the comm code and calls from the ship.

Nox comms Caleb and after a brief conversation, he says he'll head your way to hand off the ship. Caleb is an average looking Human, maybe 2 meters tall. He seems happy to see you and looks over the ship with an approving smile.

"What a steal this one is. It's in better shape than I was expecting." Looking the three of you over, he nods to himself. "You guys have any immediate plans or were you planning on hanging around for a bit?"

"Ok, well, Vrot Na'thal, one of the Spaceport security Lieutenants was complaining that he had a hot tip on where some weapons smugglers were stashing their goods. Problem is, last time he went after these guys he lost a couple officers. His boss would rather let the guns go than take the heat for losing folks on what's supposed to be a low risk job. He's been authorized to hire some heavies to serve the warrant, but spaceport security isn't allowed on scene until it's safe. Seems to me, there's a couple opportunities there."

Despite the size of the spaceport, it only takes a couple of comms attempts to make contact with Spaceport Security Lieutenant Vrot Na'thal. Within the hour, he meets with you at one of the open air bars that decorate most of the spacers section.

Lieutenant Vrot approaches you and signals the two other officers with him to hang back. "Greetings gentlebeings, you are interested in working for Spaceport security in apprehending some criminals with us? You look capable, at least. These beings are responsible for killing two of my officers last time we caught up with them. "

"We've confirmed two from our last encounter with them, but there's probably two or three more. The two we identified have rewards for their capture, five thousand each. I'm fairly sure I can assign a reward of at least a thousand to any associates that are captured with them. I can pay you 700 each as a retainer, just in case you get there and they've already moved out. I don't want you to think I'd be wasting your time.

Looking at the datapad, it does indeed contain the two warrants, one for a Human, Gestur Pag, the other for a Trandoshan, Tanomas Jantsk. Both are wanted for several charges of assault on officers and two counts of murder of law enforcement persons.

Aerial reconnaissance would be good. Nox would also like to check things out on the ground. Laying an ambush would be better in his opinion than trying to walk in the front door.

So this warehouse is somewhere in Celanon City? Ken would like to visit a few spacer bars, and places maybe even less salubrious, see if there's any talk about the smugglers and their run-ins with the spaceport security - buy a few drinks, loosen a few lips. In particular, he'd like to know if there's anyone behind these guys, any larger organisation that might pose them a problem. Not sure if that is Streetwise or Charm so I'll roll both and let our GM decide.

@Ken - Streetwise for the win! Your afternoon of bar hopping conversations lead to a few nuggets, seems these guys are new in this area and haven't moved enough stuff to bother anyone. If they are working for someone else, they're off planet.

The warehouse is in the northern spacers district, on the western side, near the freight entrances to the spaceport.

@AD-hoc, nice hammer. :) It does appear AD-hoc was absent on 'Espionage Day' at the droid school. He gets several odd looks when inquiring about finding someone that would like to buy illegal weapons.

@Nox, :( Finding the on world bounty from spaceport security is easy enough, but nothing else turns up about these two.

AD-hoc perked up, but then paused for a moment. He still wasn't used to how this group treated him as a member of a team. It was much different (and better) than the last group he hung out with. The old gang had just tossed items his way, usually stolen, and demanded that he fix them.

"I was built and programmed for repairs and mantinance. Although my last ... assignment led to work most would consider 'morally flexible' at best. Though it made no difference to me. I can repair and or modify most things. I also have some basic slicing skill available. Thank you for asking.

The three of you cross the spacer's section to find the warehouses. There is a large area of various sized buildings just across from the main throughfair that separates the spacers section from the Spaceport on this side of town. Tracking down the exact warehouse is fairly simple and spotting it, your a little suprised at its size. It's maybe 30m wide and possibly just as deep, call it 1000 sq meters. Quite likely the cheapest these guys could find. There is a large roll up truck door in the front of the building and at least one person sized door on each side.

Ken and Nox, let me know any stealth, recon, etc. rolls. For most let's go with 2P and see where that leads. AD-hoc, if your going to try and slice the datanetwork connected to the warehouse, it's 2P if you want to slice the power grid (hoping to affect this warehouse) it's 2P and 2 Black.

Aware that this is a busy industrial quarter, Ken tries his best to look casual and sidle up to one of the smaller doors without drawing any attention to himself. When he gets there he takes a look at the lock.

I'll happily take any help AD-hoc can offer. Ken has an Electronic Lock Breaker for any more complex electronic locking system. Otherwise he'll have to do it the old fashioned way, lockpicks and hand eye coordination (I've rolled Skulduggery for that).

Nox makes an effort to separate himself from Ken, no need to have the two of them attract attention together. Instead he will move towards the back of the building and get an idea of anything there. He's looking up to find ladders to the top of the building, windows up high, vantage points from nearby buildings, etc. as he goes.

@AD-hoc, killing the power would be a mixed blessing, everyone affected get's up and tries to figure out what happened before calming down. The Datanetwork however...
AD-hoc connects to a nearby data port and slices into the warehouses computer. Evironmentals are off, not broken, just turned off. It's probalby warm in there, but depending on the species, that might be normal. The lights and door locks are on and engaged, respectivley. There's two security cameras on the outside of the building, one looking at the big front door and another looking at the standard door on the right side of the building.

Nox does indeed see a roof access ladder near the back of the building, it has a hinged metal plate with a lock blocking the bottom 2 meters of the ladder to deter people from using it inappropriatly.

@Ken, I'm assuming AD-hoc's slicing action only took a couple seconds as you make your way to the door. AD-hoc, any other actions before Ken get's to the door and successfully breaks in?

@Nox, it's not to loud and with the fire alarm that just went off 2 doors down. It would be pretty hard to notice.
AD-hoc triggers a fire alarm in a building two buildings away, the initial blast is fairlly loud, but the sound settles down to a managble level allowing responders to find it. As the alarm sounds AD-hoc notices Ken walk into the security camera's view and quickly kills the feed.

Ken pries the double doors apart enough to get the right tool into the lock mechanism. These warehouse doors are easy to pop if you know the week spot Ken thinks to himself as the latch releases.

Nox hearing the alarm from down the street hits the jetpack controls and leaps up to the roof of the two story building. Landing just about where the ladder would have placed him, he see's a hatch to the inside a meter or so away.

Nox moves over to the hatch and opens it, attempting to be stealthy. Assuming he accomplishes this, he will check the vantage point before deciding on his next course of action.

Nox climbs down the ladder and inspects the view from the service walkway. His ideal scenario is to find a place to set up and snipe from.

Ken slips through the door and see's a fairly empty warehouse. Just behind the door is the standard spacing for a small cargo skiff to move and to each side are a couple of rows of shelving. About halfway down the main pathway are several stacks of crates and a few figures moving around.

Nox sees the warehouse in reverse of Ken, below him seems to be some small office space and the rest of the warehouse is laid out in rows of shelving with two main pathways crossing in the middle. Nox can clearly see about a dozen crates stacked in the center of the warehouse and two figures, either arranging or counting the crates.

AD-hoc figures other than killing the power there's not much else to do from out side and heads in the door behind Ken.

Priming the stun grenade, Ken closes one eye to line it up with the trandoshan and rolls it along the floor towards them. 'Bombs away.'

I'm not sure how far away Ken is. He needs to be in Close range to throw a grenade. If he's close enough he'll Aim and take a Blue for that and a Blue for his Quick Strike. If he's got to move closer then he'll do that and spend Strain to Aim. He'll also spend Strain to Side Step and get a difficulty upgrade on incoming ranged attacks.

Ken eases up the main isle a few meters and rolls the Stun grenade in between the two beings. In a blue flash the stun grenade rattles the two beings, neither of them go down, but they definitely felt it.

As AD-hoc and the human spar at each other, Ken's shot lances out and strikes the human with authority. His body drops hard onto the permacrete. There's a brief silence as Ken, Nox and AD-hoc look around the warehouse.

As Ken reaches the back of the warehouse, he hears distinct voices. Edging closer he sees an empty 'office' room, just a chair and a desk looking out from a large window. Beside that room is another door labeled "Conference Room". Listening, it seems like he's hearing the running commentary of some sports caster on a holo feed.

Whispering into his commlink, Ken says 'Shh...Checking out voices...' He approaches the door and stands to one side, blaster drawn. He listens in to see if he can discern whether this is just a holo-feed or if there are people in there.

Listening at the door for several minutes, Ken is able to discern a chorus of "ooohs" and '"aaahs". Whatever they're watching must be exciting. Guessing by the layout of walls, the room should only be about 3 meters by 6 meters, the door is on the side near one end.

'I'm taking a look.' Slipping another stun grenade out of his belt, Ken slides his finger over the fuse button. Then with his other hand he very slowly turns the door handle, edging it open and taking a look through the crack in the door.

Ken enters the room to see a few knocked over chairs, one unconscious thug and two more kneeling on the other side of the table. These guys are seriously ready for Ken and start firing as soon as he enters the room. Ken faces a flurry of blaster fire as he moves into the room.

Ken pauses in the doorway attracting fire which lances into his clothes, revealing the melted plastoid plates within. Grimacing in pain, Ken tries to shrug it off and takes a bead on the two shooters.

Ken's reaction to the hit is to send a volley of his own fire back at the two individuals. Catching them in overlapping stun blasts, they both go down.

Slumping against the inside wall, Ken slides a stimpack out of his belt and jabs it into his leg. 'That was more resistance than I was expecting,' he says to Nox.

Sucking in a deep breath, Ken pulls himself back to his feet and moves cautiously towards the three stunned thugs to ensure they're out for the count, and to rifle through their stuff, looking for ID.

Hearing that the blasting may be done, AD-hoc returns to inventorying the stack of crates. In short order he discovers there are 10 crates of Blastech A280 blaster rifles, 10 rifles to a crate.

Ken's search of the stunned individuals show local issued IDs as well as the standard Imperial chain code.

Ken looks for something to secure the prisoners, tie them up, then says to Nox, 'Let's search the merchandise, see if there's anything we want to...salvage, then call in security.' Then over the comlink he says to AD-hoc, 'Do you want to access their systems, see if they've got any other weapons dumps we can loot? Maybe see if they're working for someone off-world we might want to know about.'

Nox whistles as he peers into the previously hostile room. "That was probably some finer shooting than they expected too." Nox helps Ken get their newly acquired bounties tied up and ready for extraction.

"Yes, let's do that. Probably start with their personal weapons and then grab a couple items that they've clearly already sold." Hard to tell with the helmet on, but that last phrase sounded like it would've come with a wink.

As Ken and Nox grab the three unconscious thugs blasters, AD-hoc checks the computer, per Ken's suggestion. After a minute, it's clear these guys only bothered to turn on the lights and the security. It doesn't look like they were too interested in logging what they were storing in the warehouse.

One very excited Lieutenant Vrot answers the call from Nox. He arrives, quicker than you would expect and with half dozen other police and a repulsor van for hauling off the captives. He seems very relieved to have these guys secured and the 10 crates of weapons have all of the officers buzzing.

"Very excellent work, very tidy. Here's the credits we discussed." Looking around the warehouse, he wonders, "Where have your other friends gone off to, I expected all three of you to be part of this?"

Meanwhile, Ken and AD-hoc are pulling a pallet lift through the streets towards the main entrance to the spaceport. There's a little more security here than on most outer rim planets.

Nox gladly accepts the credits when offered. When questioned about the other's whereabouts he removes his helmet, showing his tired and sweaty visage. "They went on ahead to get some treatment and to prepare some for me. These guys meant serious business. We figured only one of us needed to stay and since I'm technically the bounty hunter, it fell to me."

As Ken and AD-hoc stroll towards the Crew entrance to the spaceport, a bored looking guard waves them to stop.

"C'mon guys, you know there's a per crew member credit limit on local purchases. Anything over five thousand per crew member counts as trade goods. You'll have to take it through the Customs portal. "

"Like I said mate, the rule is 5000cr of personal gear per crew member or you have to run it through customs. If those are full of stuffed bantha toys, I'd say your fine. If it's blaster rifles, there's fifteen or twenty thousand credits worth. So how many crew are on your ship?"

After a brief trip through hyperspace, Pergano brings the Ghest in for a landing at the asteroid base. Dancy isn't surprised to see you back so quickly, but two crates of blaster rifles is always a welcome surprise.

"Well, well, you boys don't miss a chance to make some credits." Eyeing Ken and Nox as they come walking up, she continues, "I see you've added a little carbon scoring to your armor. I like it, helps sell the look."

He looks down at the state of his armoured clothing, the melted plastoid plates and singed material, he's going to need to get this worked on properly. And stock back up on grenades and stimpacks.
