Chapter 1: The Fall of Troy

Feb 28, 2023 10:00 pm
Sing to me of the warriros, Muse, their lives of twists and turns
driven time and again off course, once the hallowed heights of Troy
had been plundered.
Many cities of men they saw and learned their minds,
many pains they suffered, heartsick on the open sea,
fighting to save their lives and bring their comrades home...

It began with an apple.

Rather, it began with a wedding.

Rather.... it begane with a lack of hospitality.

So, you know. Hubris.

You know well the dangers of angering the gods, and how much moreso one intent to sow Discord?

But Eris, not invited to the wedding, was content to toss an apple, and Paris fell into her trap. The fair ladies of Olympus (I dare not say the fairest for fear of repeating his mistake) vyed with vows and threats to the young man, who chose the favor of Aphrodite and with it, the hand of a married woman.

Of course, we're not all Zeus, so this started a war.

Your leaders and heroes have made a number of impressive and selfish feats alike, and ten years on the city of Troy is under siege with no clear end in sight. There is still a shred of humanity among you - Even Achilles in his rage stopped desecrating Hector's body at the tearful plea of the king. But how long such humanity will last is hard to say.

And...now you're building a giant wooden horse. Your king Odysseus insists he has a plan. Gods help you.
OOC:
Feel free to take a moment to wet your whistles, so to speak, and give us an intro post describing your character, their thoughts on the siege if you feel like it, and what they'd do on a "normal" day. IC chatter is welcome, but please let everyone introduce themselves first.

The fighting was a thrill. Exquisite bloodshed, an orgy of violence. Tiwaz had killed dozens in single combat, and more cowards that had broke formation. They tried to run and died tired.

Admiring, for how could you not the bloody swathe that Achilles had carved. Tiwaz was amazed that a Greek had so much furor, wrath, and the willingness to display the dead Hector. Achilles truly had swayed his opinion on Greek warfare.

The discipline of the troops and phalangites taught him much about tactics. Though observing the clashing foes and the hills of thousands of corpses that formed he saw an element of weakness in the formation. The Phalanx was powerful only on the fore, the flanks were easily exploited. And it only maintained uniformity on even ground. This he knew would be useful if his tribe would ever face a Hellenic war machine.

When not fighting Tiwaz showed Luwian discipline, always at the altar of Apollo learning his letters. A difficult task as the Greeks used odd symbolism that hurt his head. Unlike a proper language like Hittite which followed the ancient way of writing. A task that became much easier when he learned their less complicated base-10 numerology as opposed to the Hittite base-60.

The irony to him that they considered Luwian's barbarians was not lost to him. The overt derision many Greeks gave him made for humorous tales between him and the other members of Odysseus' retinue. Where he surrounded by greater warriors and stronger men was silent and observant unless asked. Learning by practice and by rote.

Though not everything was cordial. Ajax the Lesser and Tiwaz had been at another's throats since meeting. Only one man could be stronger than Greece. Since Ajax was Greek he was given the title, though Tiwaz suspected in terms of raw power he had the better of Ajax.

~~~~~
"I didn't think you meant build a damn horse..."
Tiwaz gripes taking a quick break from his backbreaking labor, dragging a keel to the building site, through blood soaked sand, in the middle of the night. "Apollo burn this wretched work." Setting his shoulder to the load he drags the keel another two strides. An entire cord of wood, and he was making better time than the Athenians who had devised a sled.
As he approached the work the Luwian giant hoisted an end of the keel and lifting one end of the keel overhead dropped it into the sand next to the carpenters who were at work. "No I thought Poseidon would shake the earth, but a giant horse. Haha the gods jest." Muttering to himself he kicked the keel and called up to the workers.
"Where do you want it?"
"HEAVE!" Nikias shouts as his feet dig into the dirt and, behind him, scores of his men pull together to maneuver the massive pieces of wood into place. They toiled now for Epeius, though the orders came straight from King Odysseus himself. It was confusing and frustrating work, particularly so given the lack of details about what plan this nightmare contraption was to be a part of. "I said HEAVE, MEN! The King watches us toil so over a couple of toothpicks! Will you have it said a bundle of twigs slowed you down on the eve of WAR!? HEAVE!" His muscles tense with the exertion, but finally the last few feet meet their match and the men come to a rest.
The other two groups finish at nearly the same time, their loads dropped near simultaneously and parallel to one another - a good show of synchronicity and teamwork. They were a unit, his Lochos: each individual strong as a bull, but together a single entity capable of bringing down armies. He brushes the dust from his thigh guards and laughs. "Well done, well DONE!" The men hooted and hollered at their shared victory. For how long will this joy be fresh upon their tongues, Nikias wonders, before it turns to ash? Ten years they toiled, labored, and fought. He sighs, pushing the thoughts from his mind. It would do him no good to question his King now, for surely the Gods have not forsaken them. He takes a deep breath, closes his eyes, and says a quiet prayer to Athena.
"Okay, NEXT LOAD!" he shouts, "WE RUN! Last one back pulls two watch shifts tonight!" He pushes his body, always to its limit, propelling himself at the head of over for forty of his men. For a damned horse.
Far off, well behind the army and siegeworks, Pan watched the man labor at building the odd contraption. Now what was a giant horse supposed to accomplish? The young lad was seated on a hill, finding what shade he might from the sun. Whatever the king's plans were, Pan was glad he was not among those sweating to build the contraption. Not that they'd let him do more than carry some nails, he was sure. The soldiers didn't want their little Dolios get hurt. Who else would bring them wine during the night?
All men had a purpose. And Pan, soon to be a man, was rather sure his had little to do with soldiering. Well, not the frontline stuff, anyway. He would make a wonderful quartermaster, of that he was sure. But one did not become one overnight. For now the men had kept him away from the fighting. Pan knew why. Lots of young lads who had gone before had not survived their first year. Whatever might be said of the siege, it had been a long and bloody affair and the walls yet held firm. But what else was Pan to do? Return home a camp follower? That would hardly get him a roof over his head. Unless the war would be won somehow of course. Long had Pan wondered what spoils might lie beyond those walls. A good haul of loot would set him up nicely back home. Well, what passed as home. Pan had no memory of it. But to hear the men speak of it was to know it was good.
If they ever went home, Pan corrected himself. As long as the siege had lasted, some feared that day might be years yet in the making. But there was little point in guessing. It would go as the gods willed. And the king. Maybe the Troyans. But not as little Dolios willed. Oh no.
With a sigh he got up and stretched. It was time to collect some wine. The men would be thirsty after all that work...
'They better not be expecting us to get in that thing...' Iantha watches the Greeks work gathering wood and slowly piecing it together as she polishes the armour on her lap. The bronze breastplate passed down from her mother was carves with scenes of monsters being slain, and forged of a special bronze that matched her spear. She was careful to maintain it, especially when it in return had protected her a fair few times.
Next to her sits her remaining sister in arms Chryseis sharpening her wo daggers. The nimbler of the pair she preferred to get behind the enemy while Iantha took their charges head on. The short haired amazon was quiet but had stuck with Iantha throughout everything while their number had dwindled.
Heroes. That was what they had called themselves. A group of amazons who grew up with stories of monster hunting, and wished to live up to those tales, to achieve feats that would go down in history. They'd set out to look for their own stories and legends, with debatable success. Then they had been drafted in this war. It was meant to be a test of their prowess, a start of their journeys, that had turned into a 10 year siege that had been a different kind of test. One of perseverance and character.
Irene had been the first to go. She wanted to fight monsters, not men, and when it was clear this wasn't a quick win she went to seek her story elsewhere. Kore and Ledo soon followed. The rest of them chose to stand with the fact they had made and agreement to aid, and didn't want to be so swift to turn their back. Then Thais and Alexis had fallen in battle. Those responsible had met quick repercussion. Iantha herself had manage to thrust her spear through the heart of Thais's killer.
Then the big blow had come. Their own Queen arriving in support of troy. They had all been shaken. Thea, Pelagia and Sostrate had left immediately realigning with Troy or leaving the fight completely. Menodora had lasted till she came across Penthesilea on the battle field, then the spear was thrown away.
Iantha couldn't blame her. She had been torn toward integrity, sticking with the agreement she had made with the Greek army and he own queen. The tempation to throw her spear throw her spear Achilles, to throw the last decade of fighting away had been high. Yet she had promised to see the geeks to victory, and where would she stand if she refused to honour those agreements.
So it was just her and Chryseis trying to uphold everything.
She watches as Nikias commands his men to keep moving the materials. He was someone she respected. Tiwaz as pulling wood towards the construction site. She had stayed out of his and Ajax's argument of strength. Let men be men. Then there was the kid, who was trying to fit in. Have his own place. That she hoped wouldn't suffer another 10 years. This horse sound stupid, yet at the same time if it worked it would the the end. The opportunity to start again, begin a new chapter.
She gives out a long sigh and starts to don her breastplate trusting Chryseis to help her. ' May as well help. get this all over with faster.
An end. That was what she longed for at this point.
"When my father was fourteen years old, he invented a new type of mast sling. It was nothing all that incredible, just a tapered hoop with some loops for attaching ropes. It revolutionized the way sails are raised and lowered. They said he was favored by Hephestus and everybody wanted to apprentice under him. He made a fortune, gold, land, slaves, a beautiful wife, and proper spartan children raised like proper Spartan freemen." Kouru Areiu was a proud man, a man of tradition, culture, education. Like all Spartan freemen he was given to the army to raise at a young age and had done his father proud. Family honor was the focus of his life and pride in his family name had pushed him to victory on the battle field, a decade of service to his city and people, the great honor of being personally selected for his skill in scouting and his knowledge of terrain. Kiuru Areiu was a proud man.
And now Kiuru Areiu was watching some pot-spinning son of a nameless peasant nail his father's invention on the head of a wooden horse to serve as an eye. "You know, I was to be done with military service," he muttered to nobody, taking advantage of every soldiers natural right to gripe "My father said he and my mother were picking a wife for me. I could be home right now, a villa next to my father's. I'd plant olive groves to match his vinyard, and every spring I'd come back covered in glory for putting down rebellions. I'm not even supposed to BE here!" came his cry against injustice... but nobody cared.
Hammer in hand he'd adjust the "hooves" he was working on, working wooden pegs into slats forming a leg almost too big for him to wrap his arms around. Ten years, he'd been away from hearth and home. Ten years since good King Menelaus was betrayed in his own household by those trojan dogs, threatening the legitimacy of his reign. It had been... another decade? Before that when The Lady had spoken in their temple, proud and victorious - as she should be - for being recognized for her great beauty. And now they were here, still on this damned beach, Patroclus and a thousand others dead and burned, that idiot puppy Achilles and his band still living in the temple they desecrated like some barbarian prince utterly ignorant of their folly without even the - "Lady protect me" came his unbidden curse as someone above drops a hammer, the heavy weight missing his head by a hands breadth and followed by a belated warning "... Lady protect me, guide my hands, grant us victory" was whispered shortly after as he returned the hammer to it's owner "I'm getting too old for this. Just another week or two, and we can all go home"
Mar 9, 2023 11:55 pm
"Heyyyy, it's the Ox!"
A couple of the workers call with appreciative smiles to Tiwaz and direct his load. As the Luwian heads for more lumber, he passes a running phalanx, some men frazzled, others amused at their graying but enthusiastic leader, who's at the front of the charge with a load of their own. Nikias catches Iantha and Chryseis's attention, bidding them help with the mane, since realistically speaking they're more nimble than a lot of the men who'd rather volunteer. Case in point, while a spearman hammers a mast ring in place for an eye, he drops the hammer, nearly missing the grumpy Kouru's head.
"AK! I'm sorry!" Sinon. Good kid. Not a kid, of course. He'd be five years into a marriage by now if they weren't stuck here so long. But his youthful enthusiasm always had something to prove, even though...he really didn't have much to prove. He was a completely sufficient soldier. As Kouru gets back to work, a slight shadow of a thing taps one of the "good" canteens on his shoulder. Dolios. Good kid.
Work continues in much the same manner, and by late afternoon, you're finally finished with the stupid thing.
"Fantastic work, gentlemen, gods bless us all!" King Odysseys slaps the haunch of the horse. You're starting to get concerned that he had a trap door installed in the gut. The other rulers nod with those smug all-knowing grins like nothing could possibly go wrong. "Gentlemen, far too long this siege has been a test of our patience, our prowess, and our wits. But noble service of Hera Teleia does not go unnoticed! Some of the closer men cheer and whoop, and others follow suit. For when fair Helen graced our lands we knew such graceful gift from the gods could not be claimed simply by any man. Agamemnon elbows Meneleus in the rib just a little too hard. No, such gifts should be honored and cherished, not swept away by some horny island-dwelling foreigner! More shouts, and some banging of shields. Odysseus winks at Tiwaz and the Amazonians. You have never been included in distasteful discussion of non-Achaeans. Not his, at least. He holds up his hands and settles the crowd, his rich voice mellowing like a distant thumping of drums. "Ten years. Ten years we have been kept from our own wives, our own lands, to restore the honor of this gods-blessed union. And tonight, my brothers. Tonight, our trial comes to an end. His voice picks up in pitch. You remember some of Agamemnon's speeches. They weren't nearly as performative. Tonight, we take the city of Troy - once and for all!
The men cry out in excited frenzy. When they settle. Odysseus explains the plan. This...is where things start going a bit more as expected.
Most of the army will just up and leave. They'll wait for a signal on a nearby island. The remaining folk will burn the camps and....
Yep, there it is.
The remaining folk will burn the camps and hide in the horse. Sinon, enthusiastic Sinon, offers to be the "sacrifice" left for the Trojans to explain their "surrender gift" in "honor of Athena" or something like that.
"And of course," finishes Odysseus, "It would be dishonorable for me to suggest such a dangerous and daring plan without undertaking it myself. So the men assigned to my camp will stay on land, while the others will wait for our signal from the sacking of Troy.
Your ears nearly break from the violent "WOOOO!" that erupts nearby from Achilles. He didn't even need to be here - and had leveraged that at least once - but was thrilled for the opportunity, apparently.
Odysseus continues with some of the minutiae, and the armies mobilize. Come nightfall, you'll be hidden inside a giant wooden horse.
OOC:
"Glory be to the Bull of Heaven the Brilliant and Invincible Apollo." Tiwaz touched the Silver Sun on his Breastplate and pumped his fist in salute to the Greeks who called him Ox.
Tiwaz took a deep breath steadying himself. He knelt grabbed the keel in both hands. Focused on the hole inside him, that fearful inadequacy that drove him. The voices of the Priest's of Apollo ringing in his ears. Telling him he would never be strong enough, dedicated enough, never disciplined enough to belong in the Greek world. He growled at the sounds of their voices. For they were right, he was nothing but a savage. A raving lunatic, the growl built into guttural chanting in his native tongue. Tearing that hole wider in that agonizing ecstatic pain. Apollo’s
Curse, and the great gift of strength. "Hail Daystar from whom all blessings flow. Join seen and unseen in their place. To what who both creates, sustains, what goes before, in justice reigns."
Hoisting a ton of wood overhead was something a mere man could not do. But the Luwian Giant, with no aid of machinery hoisted the entire keel, pressing it overhead. He slowed considerably but began to walk up the earthworks to the "mane" draping the keel over the frame lowering it slowly into place.
Tiwaz shook off the trance swaying on his feet from exertion and his sight clouded by visions of death and gore. "The Lion will be laid low by a thorn in paw." He said in Greek to no one in particular rubbing his eyes free of the visions. When his sight was clear enough he jumped from the Earthworks to the beach below and plodded towards the broken ships towards a mast which lay on the beach. Haunted by what he had seen.
~~~~~

After settling the mast in place Tiwaz no longer felt the motivation to work and crawled within the belly of the horse. Laying his furs down he cradled his hammer praying to Apollo forgiveness as he drifted into nightmares.

He was going into the horse too? That was quite a surprise to Dolios. Still he did not worry too much. He would be surrounded by fighting men, some of legendary quality. If things turned bad he could slip off during the fighting. But if things went well... he would be a hero! And there was no small matter of being among the first to get a chance at looting to consider. Tonight would decide his future..

At the announcement of who is going in the horse Iantha just sighs. Just her luck. She had no problem being one of the first on the battlefield. In fact she relished that. Being crammed into a small space packed with others before hand though... if this plan even worked as the Trojans didn't set fire to the 'gift' where it stood.

As they start getting ready to enter she speaks. 'I am going near the front. Less chance Kynigós stabs someone.' She places a hand to the spear on her back. The weapon had served her well, but definitely wasn't the best tyo be packed into an enclosed space.

Nikias spends his time walking amongst his soldiers, checking with each to affirm their state of mind and jesting with them as needed to ease any pre-battle jitters. There was little of that - these men were hardened, mostly, beyond such worries, yet still after ten hard years of fighting...well, that can do a lot to the mind. His men were good for it, though - they were ready, and so was he.

He appreciates the company - some of the finest warriors on their side of this war were present, including the Amazon, Iantha, who had narrowly saved him from being impaled during the last skirmish. He felt blessed to know she and her sisters would be there - surely the gods were watching her closely. He gives her a knowing nod when their eyes meet.

After the camp clears, he catches sight of Dolios. "What in Hades are you still doing at the camp, boy!?" he shouts at seeing the young man. He sighs. "You heard the king, anyone who stays behind is climbing in this horse to fight our way out. You're no exception - come, I'll make sure you have some proper gear." He leads Dolios to be as prepared as possible for what's to come.

"Ah, these kids. Just puppies when we started. Guess they're men now... the ones that are still around". It had been hard seeing Ares taking his toll on the youngest, bravest of the boys. Some of them hadn't even had half of their proper training before their mothers handed them shields "With it or on it" came unbidden to his lips as he joins some of his countrymen, only to learn that... "We're climbing... inside... a horse. A horse made of ship parts. He's serious?"

But no, there were already men climbing... into... the horse "This has to be the stupidest, most addle-brained, poorly planned, good-idea Ανθούσαι inspired nonsense that an-""-yone has EVER come up with. Why ATHENA? It's a HORSE!" His mind was galloping a league a minute as he climbed up, then down into the very leg he'd been creating, shifting until his eyes found a little chink in the woodwork from which to watch the world - a world clearly gone mad - move by. "Lady Mother, Queen of War" he prayed, looking up at those massive walls "Let me die well. A man's death. Don't let them burn us all in this thing"

Well, it's dark, and crowded, and smells like the worst parts of camping with soldiers, but to the king's credit... the Trojans actually buy it. Most of that is Sinon's doing.

Oh, Great Trojans! Truly, we can see where the favor of the gods rests! As my kings and kin flee to our homeland in shame, they send me as a messenger with a great gift - our surrender and this homage to Athena, Kydrí. Athena, Nikephorus Daemon. Athena, Ippæláteira - !!!

An arrow flies out from behind the wall and barely misses the soldier's feet.

Mercy, please! In desperation to fight this ill-fated war the fair princess Iphegenia was sacrificed, and in greater desperation to return home they leave me, your humble slave........

The soldier continues and a voice barely breaks the silence.

This kid think he's Spartan or Athenian?

Agamemnon, if you don't shut up I will castrate you.

But after Sinon's theatrics, you feel the horse lurch forward, and hear the creaking - then slamming - of the great city's doors. The evening drags along painfully slow. You'll strike when everything is finally silent, when the Trojans are asleep with the false pretense of victory.

(There was that little hiccup where one of the local priests tried to convince his kin to burn the horse, but Athena quickly dealt with that. Sinon, for his part, is apparently terrified of snakes, even when they're not after him.)

"Penthesilea!" Chryseis whispers with tears in her eyes, grabbing at Iantha's wrist. You recognize the voice of your queen in a flash.

Other men fidget and squirm, a few trying to stand within the horse. You hear tiny little whispers of praise to Hermes thanking the god for whisking families to the place of triumph. Even Pan looks excited.

It didn't matter that it was a trap. Tiwaz knew that someone had to spring it. If they set a trap, the enemy only waited for fire to be brought soon their ploy would end in flames. Hairs standing on end he whispered to those nearest to him. "I heard my kinswoman and the Queen, I'll secure us safe passage." Tiwaz pulled the belaying pin on the hatch clearly intent on leaping from the horse. He would offer no resistance, however, if someone attempted to belay him.

"Greek? No, Spartan. What Spartan woman would be here on the field of battle when we've been gone from home for so long?" It had been... a while since he'd heard the lyrical voice of a woman speaking in his home dialect, and a sudden rush of homesickness served as a spark to bring the light of reason back into his mind. Despite feeling the tug on his mind, Nikias holds fast. He watches his men carefully - these men who have weathered so much these many years. Would any of them break, now? He watches and waits, springing to quietly hold someone back if they tried to escape. He sees a flash as a man, unknown to him, reaches to open the trap door and rushes to stop him.

He wordlessly pulls the man back and looks him dead in the eyes - no threats, but a conveyance of respect and assurance: They would do this, as planned. They would follow orders, and there was no room to do otherwise. He waits to see acknowledgement in the other man's eyes before loosening his grip.

Kouru and Tiwaz, stealth checks for speaking, please. Kouru, you have no idea who the woman is. Sorry, bruh. The other rolls pass so far.

I am imagining awkward seats/shelves along the body of the horse with a couple rope ladders from the top to the trap door. There are a couple more rope ladders in the belly for when the trap door is opened.

So to summarize, Chryseis (the NPC Amazonian), Iantha, and Pan are tempted to yeet. Pan, if you would like to be the fellow Nikias stops, just roll a counter-strength to see how it goes, or you can choose to follow the implied order with no issue.

Iantha, you and Chryseis are in a really inconvenient spot in the front. So you can either choose to listen to the men who will try to stop you, or you can roll strength to try to get out.

In both cases, I'll let you choose what fits your character narratively since it's the result of secret rolls.

Kouru and Tiwaz are closest to the trap door. Nikias (and possibly Pan) are somewhere in a middle level.
Mar 16, 2023 8:48 pm
As Nikias moves to stop him Tiwaz does so with no resistance. But maintains his vice-like grip on the belaying pin. His posture and grip said one thing. "My right is first to fight." The Greeks and the Phalanx had their place in pitched battle, but they had no business on the absolute chaos of a raid. Still it paid to have allies so he waited. "Your rules of engagement are a hindrance in a raid. If we stop moving behind enemy lines we will perish. You Greeks fight well in a featureless plane, but the Luwian way is raiding cities." Tiwaz's Greek was heavily accented. "Your phalanx tactics are a liability in a place with so many artifical rises. If you fight like a Greek in this raid, we will all perish."

The amazon goes pale as her Queens voice reaches her ears. It was not possible, yet she could not deny the voice. The offer of home.

The war was a fight of the gods, Achilles had the ability to turn blades.. Was it not possible some blessing had led to their Queen returning?

At the back of her mind there is doubt as Nikias. So close. What would Artemis think if she gave up on their victory, their quarry is a sense, now, after 10 years..

But to go home. To seek forgivness from Penislthea..let these men finish their war...

'I will go. If it is not trick we will call. If it is... I will make them regret it.' Iantha whispers to her sister in arms before standing, her intent to get to thr door clear whether the men were willing to part or not.

She had to see her Queen, to see if she was real, if all could be forgiven.

knock ~ knock ~ knock

Listen, we can do this one of two ways.

You hear Menelaus gasp. Helen!

Either I let Sinon release you, but I never have to see your faces again. Or I light this thing up myself to give the Trojans a fair fight and take my chances with the wrath of the gods. Maybe Ares will grant me a favor for keeping things interesting.

Helen… Menelaus’ voice dribbles off as the kings conspire. Finally, he speaks up again. We accept.

Swear on it. - No! Make your beloved mastermind swear on it. It's his fault you all got dragged out here.

There’s a long, awkward silence, then Odysseus speaks up.

I swear on the verdant shores of my home. On the smile of my beautiful Penelope. On the promise of the son I barely know. That we will not interfere with your escape.

There’s no response. You think you hear the women whispering.

May the gods bless you and keep you, Helen calls. Far away from me.

And a few moments later, Sinon’s head pops up into the belly of the horse. The soldiers spill into the courtyard, ready to burn and pillage whatever strikes their fancy. Orders from the kings are simple: This is your last day here. Make it count.
OOC:
Thank you for your patience! Starting the story with canon events was a weird move for me, so I appreciate you guys running with it. Things open up notably now. You can sense motive on Helen or the soldiers, help wipe out the barracks, loot supplies, loot treasure, commit some friendly neighborhood arson, stare at the sea wistfully until it's all over, pretty much anything. I will have small encounters along the way depending on what you choose. I haven't forgotten about the religion rolls, and I'll be posting a map shortly.

Tiwaz upon seeing the barracks and bountiful plunder beyond charges immediately to the nearest brazier to the barracks, grasps the hot metal in gloved hands he doesn't miss a step as he leaps high into the air and hurls the brazier into the thickest crowd of tents. The knocking cuts through Ianthe's reverie, and she stops trying to maneu er to the horse and get past the other soldiers back in reality.

As the conversation occurs a look of anger cross on her face. This Helen, was she the one impersonating the queen? Anger seethe in the warrior but she still can't get past. Not everyone starts surging out at once, and by then the deal is struck, she's to be left alone.

As the men surge off to riot she drops out of the horse and looks across the soon to be destroy city. A trick it may have been but to hear the voice of her Queen so close to victory... Was this all worth it. What would the reception be like back home?

But it was not as if they could stop it now. With or with Iantha the city was at least gling to be several damaged.

'Let's finish this' She nods to Chryseis and starts to head after Nikias. The quarry had alluded them for 10 years. Now was the time for the final blow.

"Well, that didn't take long" Like any good scout he'd push far forward of the lines with his destination clear in his head, heedless of the high men and their politics. Dropping lightly from the trap door his eyes would take in a forming phalanx, smoke already rising, and the inner walls of Troy. "There, the gate" the inner doors would have to be flung open to allow defenders to sally out if there was any hope of saving the city from the sword or fire. And his goal lay beyond... but of course he had to get through the melee first.

The Luwian leaps through the air, and the crash of the brazier is met with the startled shouts of half-awake men. They spill from the tents in poorly-armored droves, faces pale at the sight of the phalanx, illuminated in sinister flashes of light and shadow by the resulting fire.

The first line of men doesn't stand a chance. In the resulting chaos, confident in his men's ability, Nikias rushes forward, knocking into the captain with the full force of his blade. The man staggers and spits blood from his mouth.

Death before slavery, he hisses, But not without a worthy fight! With wobbly legs he picks up his sword and swings at Nikias.

Fueled by their rage, Iantha and Chryseis see little more than a field ready for harvest, the confirmation of their queen's death stinging like a reopened wound. But regardless of the side they fought on, the sisters took to the hunt under the wing of Artemis, and there is honor is fulfiling it.

Many men take a more chaotic angle on the looting, focusing on the spoils of war, beating and slashing at those who dare stand in their way. But focused more on the temple, Kouru dashes through the crowd. He finds himself in the upper city, on the frontline of the charge to the sacred space, alongside several others. He doesn't have time to identify them all, but to his left he notices the stout Ajax - the lesser one, though the man has been frustrated at the name after the death of the Greater.

As for Nikias, this is what makes the aging soldier feel young. His blade sings in prayer to Athena. And yet...

Through mighty leaps and bounds Tiwaz ascends before the Paladium, having grabbed a standard he burned it in plain view his mighty voice carrying out even over the clash and din of bloodshed. He waved the burning banner overhead creating a lightshow.

"Take heed mighty men of Troy!
A swarm of locusts has descended.
No man will survive this day!
We bleed you til this warlighthouse.

At the Barracks
Because this is out of the ordinary for their captain, Nikias's men shout in acknowledgement and press on, excited at the promise of what is to come. Clearly, it's important. Iantha and Chryseis are a formidable asset to the phalanx, picking off Trojans who would otherwise slip to the sides and try to attack from the back. They do notice civilians rushing about in a panic, but it seems the only gate out of the city that hasn't been fully barricaded is the one through which the horse entered, past more raging soldiers.
OOC:
At the Temple
Kouru, Ajax, and a few others reach the temple first. Inside priests of various deities take various roles - some praying, some ushering civilians, some panicking themselves. One particularly frightened lady clings to the base of a statue of Athena. An older priest carrying only a ceremonial blade braces himself for the attack - a cleric of Ares, it seems, but far past the age of battle. Ajax raises an eyebrow at Kouru.

Rank gets first pick.

When Tiwaz arrives and bellows his challenge, the priest looks honor-bound to comply, but a younger man storms in with the markings of a modern soldier.

This isn't your fight, foreigner!

His cry is accompanied by a spear thrown at the Luwian.
OOC:
Somewhere in the Streets
Nikias runs through the crowd, soon matching stride with the king Agamemnon.

Good, he notes between heavy breaths. I saw her go this way. Hang back in case she has loyalists from the city. I wouldn't want to play my whole hand.

Mar 23, 2023 3:21 am
Tiwaz opened himself up for the thrown spear, he didnt even attempt to dodge it. Exposed as he was he braced for some pain. When the spear fell short three feet from him he laughed, then drawing his thumb across his throat he told the fighter he was going to kill him anyway. "Is this a Trojan champion? Send me Hector. Send me Paris. Not this beardless whelpling!" Tiwaz gave the youth full marks for bravery, for indeed it would take a brave or incredibly stupid person to fight him toe to toe.

Tiwaz incredulous at the sight sprints full force into the challenger, his mighty hammer, Earthbreaker carried at the low ready as the gigantic Luwian bore down upon the poor Trojan Leaping, flinging the full force of his bodyweight into an ascending swing. A column of air whooshing from the hammerhead preceded the strike. "Witness me Apollo, this blood is for you oh greatest of all gods!"
OOC:
If the attack is successful Leaping Attack upgrades it to a critical hit for 66damage.

Also his charging feat allows him to continue his moment if the attack kills his enemy, so if thats the case Tiwaz would drape the first of his kills on the Paladium's archway. Practically challenging Palas to fight him.

Twiaz and Polites
With surprising speed, your challenger blocks your attack. He's wounded, truly, but his shield takes the brunt of the force and clatters to the ground, useless.

The youth laughs. Where is Achilles? Where is your great Ajax? No, Lord Apollo himself helped Paris slay your beloved madman, and Ajax lies skewered by Hector's sword. In a flurry his blade slashes at you, both swings hitting their marks. A glint in his eye suggests this bare-face may have more luck than you thought.

It seems the dregs of the Achaean army consist of foreigners. I am Polites, son of Priam, brother of Paris and Hector of whom you dare to speak.
OOC:
Tiwaz, please take 23 damage. Polites did not confirm his crit, but he did land 2 hits.

That's a very tasty feat.
As Nikias cals out to the others and runs off Ianthas head snaps over concern on her face. It was never good to go off alone I a battle. Some of the Greeks she wouldn't put it past them but as a leader of a phalanx, where their strnetght was in being together it's was strange.

Still she wasn't going to split from her own remain teammeber. She locks eyes with her sisters in arms as she strokes down another defender and tilts her head on the direction Nikias had run, silent communicating before moving to follow expect Chryseis to be close behind.

She wouldn't let Nikias throw away the left she had save once by being foolish. Besides the word quarry had piqued her interest

Tiwaz didn't blame his prince for not recognizing him. He was just a peasant. An enormous peasant of legendary strength and Fortitude. Cold green eyes glowered at the prince as Tiwaz pulled himself further down his own Prince's blade fury and madness etched in his eyes. "I am no Foreigner to you, my Prince. I AM TREASON!" Using his immense strength Tiwaz lifted Polites up extracting the blade from his torso, it had sliced open the burning banner to reveal the truly monstrous physique Tiwaz possessed, very little blood had spilled from his wound. Muscles filled with white blood and adrenaline surged.

The Giant of Luwia was no misnomer, he was easily twice the size of the average man, though not necessarily in height, density. Two lines of Royal Blood stained Earthbreaker, which began to glow with soft golden light.

"Priests of Troy" came his bellow as Ajax stands back, the scout's eyes scanning over the temple and the priests therein "I give you the choice: Surrender to me and carry your gods with you into captivity, to be safe and honored in Sparta, or die here and have them melted down into baubles to be tossed to camp followers and catamites!" Behind him a brawl broke out, but stout Ajax was there to guard his flank and the massive mercenary was there to protect his back. Any good soldier knew to trust the men beside him, and this melee was no different - if a bit warmer - than the hundreds he'd experienced thus far.

While the youth looked for glory, however, he knew the purpose of war "We honor the gods through victory, through wisdom, and prestige" echoed the voice of his father from a dusty memory "There is nothing more grand than making the enemy your own, taking their wisdom, their skill, and even their gods and making them serve your own" Songs would be sung of those who fell and those who survive, but his sons would grow wise and strong from the teachings of Troy, and Sparta would become renowned as a the center of upright morality that they were... finally surpassing those flattering Athenians in even this last arena.

Nikia has no plans to involve himself in Agememnon's machinations - his concern lay with Horkos. His own king had sworn an oath to protect Helen and what kind of loyal man were he, should he allow that mischievous daemon upset the oath, or at least to be there as witness to its falter.

He moves stealthily to avoid detection by Agememnon, but to stay close enough to hear the man's words and witness the man's actions.

And we don't have time. Go find glory and plunder elsewhere, and I will give you a tenth of my share of the plunder for your... trouble once we are done." As he stood calm but ready, the rough lessons of his father echoed once again through time "Never get into a fight you can't win, and never win a fight you don't have to have." He didn't know Ajax, other than the fact that he shared a name with the Prince of Salamis, now gone and burned like so many others "There is a palace and princesses yet waiting for you"

"That... stings" was a bit of an understatement as a gash opens across his shoulder, the clasp of his breastplate shorn nearly completely in two. Spear would lance out in a feint toward the face but quickly reverse, the shaft positively screaming upward from below. The flexible shaft would glance off the lower edge of Ajax's bronze plate which in turn acted as a fulcrum for the very tip of the shaft to gain momentum and climb ever higher, striking with a ringing chime and a dull thump at the same time.

Agamemnon and Helen

Well, the good news is, he's not mad, he's disappointed.
The king listens to your plea but doesn't change course.

Captain, your efforts are well respected in this war. Surely, you have at least one child? If I let this woman run, each one of us who swore to protect her marriage will be named liar. What would we say to the widows of the men lost here if we didn't do everything possible, after so long? What would I say to my own wife - that I sacrificed our daughter to the gods for nothing?

Helen squirms, but Agamemnon holds on and begins binding her hands and ankles.

But if I take her, and return her to her rightful husband, the only failed oath comes from your king. A travesty, certainly. But too many times in the past ten years, when we've focused on the wishes of one Achaean, the army has suffered. Consider the raging death of Great Ajax. Even my own foolishness with Achilles' Briseis!

Helen glares daggers at Nikias as Agamemnon hoists her on his shoulder.

Consider your duty fulfilled, soldier. Now step aside.
OOC:
The Temple
Ajax howls and doubles over. More soldiers have arrived. Some loot the temple, though a scant few take pause at the priest of Ares' insistance that they've surrendered. Briefly, at any rate.

About a dozen men circle Kuiru, Ajax, and Cassandra. Having put the pieces together, they either laugh at the fight and cheer on the Spartan, or itch in their sandals to beat Ajax themselves.

By the time he gets to his feet, Ajax has sputtered a slew of curses at Kiuru. He strikes again.

Is this how you want to go out, old man?
OOC:
Please take 9 damage.

Tiwaz lays the fallen champion reverently at Pallas' feet, but not before stripping him of his sword. A princely blade which he strapped to his belt immediately.

Taking the Ibex horn to his mouth Tiwaz shouted clear and loud over the din. Amplified by the tool his voice carried high and clear through much of the city.

"Fallen lies glorious Polites.
Crushed neath will of Apollo.
Why now will the wise treatise?
Or has this princely demise rendered you hollow?
Hard hearted Priam who has lost all his sons.
Should have seen to his kingdom.
Lest my hands, traitorous would have not deprived him his legacy.
Weep now Trojans, surrender and let no more blood fall.
For this noble Polites, and his flame of life extinguished, be the death knell for all Hatti people.
Henceforth our league ever be known as Hellenic.
For the folly of one king, and the face that launched one thousand ships.

Elsewise send me your King!
If there be any worth to Trojan Valor.
King Priam, here in front of Blessed Pallas I wait for you."

Looking aside briefly as Ajax tumbles he'd turn to the soldiers and bark "Hold. This temple and all within have surrendered to Sparta. The palaces and houses of the wealthy are open to you, but this ground is under our protection, as promised before the gods" The blade of that spear would rise and descend as Ajax attempts to rise, attempting to strike him back down. (Attack of Opportunity) Experienced eyes scan over the men, checking for his own countrymen and the men under his command "Secure this temple, and you may divide my share of the booty between you when this is all said and done. This traitorous dog" here his attention would turn back to Ajax "Has struck a superior and brawled in the midst of battle to satisfy his base lust" Again his spear would rise, striking back down "As such, I claim him as booty, and all of his share as well"

Priam hangs his head in shame and prays. Cassandra slips out of the crowd and clutches her father's robes. They speak quietly.

When Kouru tries to sedate Ajax, he's thrown off guard by a sudden motion of the shamed soldier. Blade cuts skin again, and this time all goes dark.

The Greek soldiers fly into a frenzy, hurling rocks at Ajax, when suddenly a voice cries out. Bold Odysseus, demanding they spare the soldier. The others protest and in a rambling mess explain Kouru's negotiation, Ajax's insubordination, his threat to Athena's servant, and the desecration of her altar.

He shouldn't be killed for being an idiot. Odysseus says plainly. As for the statue, we're raiding the city. These things happen. As for the girl, nothing actually happened at all. So either avail yourselves of the other rich houses here, or help pack up the temple.

Priam finishes a tearful goodbye to Cassandra. It seemed their relationship was quite strained before the war.

Kouru's body burns, and his head pounds, as if he was in the forge with his father. But the sound fades, and his temperature cools, and he almost thinks he hears a voice.

It's an important distinction, you know. Well done.

He opens his eyes and sees Cassandra and the king. She finishes tying a bandage and pulls her hands back.

Promise me, I beg you, Priam begins, that you will not harm her without just cause. I know slavery is not comfortable, but I cannot bear the torment of any more children.

"... because sometimes what seems like a weakness can make you even stronger" The Riddle of Bronze... copper is soft, tin crumbles, but together... they are more "Wise king of Ithaca" he'd begin, rising up to lean on his spear and letting the men subdue Ajax... because he couldn't. Rather than the heavy full bands of plate worn by the infantry, Kouru wore only the bronze breastplate of a soldier - or had, before the final blow had sundered it from his chest leaving the leather jack and his skin a tattered, bloody mess "His death was never my goal. He was offered the chance to leave after this area was claimed, honorably. I had first claim, which he relented. I claimed these people - including those two" here he'd rest his spear on the wall... no, that's the statue of Athena - because he couldn't actually hold it any more and needed to lean on the wall himself, but ostensibly so he could point at Priam and Cassandra "Before the gods. They and their gods all belong to Sparta. To my family, and thus to Good King Menelaus. I claimed Ajax as a prize for assaulting a superior, brawling, and treason during the heat of battle... but I will relinquish him to your custodity if you can simply promise that my claims will be respected. As one eye begins swelling shut the old scout would cough wetly, then make firm eye contact with the foreign king "If so, you have my word that nothing will be said about his conduct from me this day forward" The ringing of the forge-hammer echoed in his ears over and over as he looks down at the beaten king of Troy, the motion causing the world to tip just so "You've seen my conduct, Trojan King. You've seen my word is good, as strong a bond as the oath of the famous friend of the Great Achilles"

Tiwaz waited for this all to unfold holding his hammer at the high ready. He looked pensively at Kouru when he attempted to plead for Priam's life. "What sentiment is this that we should further dishonor this man by letting him live to see his people enslaved? He is a king and deserves better than that."

Priam had given himself freely and so Tiwaz would afford him every honor. "Then my King would you continue to live as a coward? Or should I send you to face whatever judgement the gods have decided?"

OOC:
The Temple
Odysseus listens intently and grasps Kouru's less-injured shoulder. Well spoken, soldier. I find your terms agreeable. I'll handle Ajax. If you wish, my man Nikias will take you and yours on his ship. We pass Sparta on the way home to Ithaca, and he has space after suffering losses to his own ranks. You've made quite a wise claim for Sparta. These riches will shine in your temples long after looted blades are dulled and mere trinkets are spent.

He smiles and steps back to tend to his own matters. May you hear the tales they sing of you for years to come.

For Priam's part, he bows his head to Kouru, satisfied that at least one of his children is safe for the moment being. Then he looks to Tiwaz.

You will understand when you are older, Luwian, that courage to admit failure is not always fulfilled in combat. And yet, if my captor permits it, I find it poetic to fall to the hand of one of my own subjects, for they are the ones I have harmed most through my hubris.

Iantha's face curls into one of disgust. 'You sacrificed your daughter, so another man could lay claim to a woman who did not want him? Perhaos you should stop and think about your own choices'

The kings words affected her, but not in a way he would have hoped. She hand her sisters had joined the war more as mercenaries, not really caring for the purpose, more that they were offered glory, and the monsters were no where in sight. Then their honour in agreeing to aide the greeks to victory had kept them there.

Her queen had been fighting against that. Fighting for Helen's freedom, right to choose. More sorrow washes over Iantha as she lowers her own spear along side Nikias. She had fulfilled her duty. Troy had fallen. While it would not make up for the 10 years, maybe she could fulfil a small part of her Queens wish, and Odyessus's oath.

Gingerly a hand would reach up to grasp the one on his shoulder, the soldier nodding in respect "And to you, blessed King of Ithaca. I'm sure they will one day sing songs of your wisdom" His one unswollen eye would look over at Priam, then shift to squint at the Anatolian mercenary "What? Lad, he's a slave, he has no honour. And you" wincing slightly he'd point at the kin- at the former king "are needed to teach my children what happens when you let your loins rule over brains. This matter is already decided. King Odysseus, the highest of all of us here, has agreed. Why do I need to keep having this conversation?? Wavering slightly the ranger would glance at the aged priest of Ares, still uncertainly holding his ceremonial blade in veiny hands Servant of Ares, direct the priests and servants. Anything you would like to see survive needs to be packed, and quickly" turning to Cassandra he'd gesture toward his freshly bandaged side "You, princess, oversee your people. You chose well today, and you'll be rewarded for your foresight. I trust that you will allow none of those here to attempt to hid anything from us. You all belong to me now, and so long as you do not try to cheat us you will be protected. As for you, old man" shifting slightly his close-cropped grey head would turn to Priam "Come help me walk. I've bled today protecting you and your people. Pick up my shield and serve as my crutch, here under my arm" "Why does everybody want to keep taking my stuff? It's worse than my brothers trying to take my toys... I wonder if Mother and Father have found a wife for me. I wonder if the Temple will fit all of these things. I wonder..." Eyes were getting somewhat glazed as his mind wanders, blood still seeping into those bandages. Blinking owlishly his gaze would land on the servants milling around "And one of you grab my breastplate! That thing cost a fortune!"
Mar 27, 2023 12:50 am
"King Odysseus is not higher than a god, even he cannot speak over them! He is a man as are we all. This man, King Priam, accepted a challenge before Athena, and it was witnessed by a Priest of Ares. This half dead Spartan appeals the authority of a King, against the authority of not one but two gods of war! I will not so easily be pursuaded into damning our entire army for his ego's satisfaction!"

Tiwaz was not moved. From his vantage atop the Palladium in a literal sense no man was higher than he regardless of status. He was bathed in a Prince's blood standing with Athena-Pallas on his right hand. Brandishing his hammer his rage had still not left him. He pointed to the destroyed body of Polites as it dangled from the arms of Athena where he had left it. The shattered armor and mess of body, broken shield. The prince had been wasted, there was no recovering what happened to his body, there was no separating the armor from his corpse. Forever broken by the incredible attack of the massive Tiwaz, scarcely recognizable as human remains.

"There would be no honor in fighting a man so close to death. Who would champion this Spartan's blasphemy and press his claim?"

Rapping his knuckles against the Breastplate he stood on high ground above everyone. Everyone that had just witnessed what he had done while on equal ground. Tiwaz now had the express advantage of being able to leap down upon any who would press the claim.

Hold, Luwian! Odysseus barks. This temple belongs to Sparta, thus King Menelaus. Priam is to return as his slave.
Mar 27, 2023 2:29 am
Tiwaz sighs shoulders his hammer and gives one long baleful look to Odyssrus. He gathered his own blood and placed it into Athena's hand. "This theodicy be then!" Tiwaz reached down from the roof at the apex of the temples columns and tore from it the Palladium which he cast at Kouru's feet. Then he leapt from the temple to the outer wall off to find and crush any resistance that remained.

OOC:
The Palladium is a wooden placard that supposedly fell from the heavens into Troy. It was stolen in the battle.

As far as the blood on the statue its more like paying what he sees as restitution for heresy. The gods demand blood afterall and while he hasnt spilled the kings blood he is owed, and he absolutely is going to collect on eventually, he is himself a king in waiting, even though he has no idea of that it should fulfill the blood covenant for at least himself.

Plus it'll be really nice to be the one to say I told you so as the Spartans reap their just rewards for debasing an honorable combat. Being who Athena is, I can imagine she is quite disgusted at showing mercy of any sort as afterall mercy is for the weak and Athena loves the strong.

Tiwaz is no heretic and even if he says his prayers to Apollo and all the Immaculate Stars he believes in all the gods and would try his hardest to secure the payment he is righteously due. If nothing else for his own glory, but certainly for the glory of Apollo.

I am not Odysseus, even were he here to do the same, he may not forgive my actions even if he does my intent. If you are traitors, I will not hesitate to slay you! the king barks. What then of your home and families - dishonorably killed? Do you want to subject them to that fate?

Agamemnon doesn't notice, but you all do. Helen is unable to break her bonds, her wrists gripped by a goddess. Horkus bickers with her, but she remains steadfast. Her ornate crown includes a plume of peacock feathers.

Kouru was a soldier, born, raised, trained, and battle hardened. He trusted his superiors to care for their duty, just as he knew they trusted him to do his. Frankly, after Odysseus had declared support for his claim, the matter was closed. His concentration was on the gathering of the priests and servants, and of course preparing for the temple to be packed: it was now Spartan, and would be packed, transported, and loaded with Spartan efficiency. And then... the Hittite jumped up on the roof, and cast down a woode- "There's no way that's what I think it is" reaching out to try and catch the idol, he'd of course collapse to one knee, helplessly watching as Athena's blessing bounced on the floor.
OOC:

Fangs and venom, coils and scent. Which most defines the serpent?

Tiwaz reasoned the question. "Even humans have fangs. And a spider is oft more venomous than a snake."

"Scent. Numerous creatures possess fangs, and venoms. Eels and worms coil. But nothing uses scent alike a snake."

A wise choice, Son of Woe. Knowledge guides battle. Yet what good is scent without the body to actualize? And what good is the body without scent to guide?

Agamemnon
The king's face falls, and he lowers his blade.

I am tired, son of Ithaca. And perhaps more worn than I thought.

He steps past you without protest and leaves you in the alleyway with Helen.

I have no idea what sort of debt you're expecting, but I suppose I owe it.

She seems particularly impressed with Nikias' words and Iantha's bladework. But if you didn't notice the spectral interloper before, you do now.

Nikias' vision of Horkus has faded, but the woman holding Helen's bonds raises an eyebrow.
Mar 28, 2023 3:25 pm
As the King backs down a long of annoyance crosses Iantha's face. She had been geared to fight him, to prove her might and point through her spear.

Still it was probably a good thing she was not killing a King, and it seemed to be Nikias's wish he wve allowed to leave so she let's home pass, moving to free Helen... Before immeadiatly lowering her spear seeing the situation she was in.

'Who are you? Release her'

Helen appears startled, for once. Of course, there are those who say she's a daughter of Zeus. The woman continues.

I have simply been curious to watch you proceed. You three are adamant this woman twice-wed is to live as a maiden. But what now? She is no soldier and your kin have the city in ruins.
Mar 29, 2023 5:32 pm
Nikias relaxes as Agamemnon relents and leaves them with Helen. He feels relief wash over him - he had not struck out this battle to fight his own - a king no less - and woe to his fate, had this encounter gone differently. But then there was her, the figure before them, holding onto Helen's bonds.

"I seek no debt, or repayment of such. My actions were for my king, Oddyseus, though this you may have gathered. Still, remember me with kindness, if you may. The time may come when my fate rests in your hands." He nods to Helen in understanding, then looks beyond, to the other figure.

"Please, wise and mighty one, release this woman from her binds. Let her decide her fate, rather than choose for her."

He looks again to Helen, "Lady - Odysseus said he would not stop you, but you see the sad state of your city. What would you do now?"

Helen smiles gently at having finally been directly addressed. I've been collecting. Nothing that would hurt the civilians. Scraps of dried food, drops of wine and oil. Old cloth and broken jewelry. My hiding place is nearby. I thought I might travel southwest. More or less. If I follow the sea along its coast I should never be too far from people, from resources. In a few months I should reach Egypt. I've heard how lovely the detla is.

She chuckles and rubs the back of her neck. To be honest, I didn't think I'd get this far.

You realize the goddess is gone, and Helen is unbound.
Mar 29, 2023 6:56 pm
Tiwaz held the wound where the Massive Serpent had nearly torn him asunder considering the magnitude of what had transpired. The Goddess had touched him directly, a kiss, an embrace, and a game of riddles. "Was Athena flirting with me? After such tender care she makes sure to relate it to the body. Was she offering her body?"

Tiwaz was very confused by what had transpired and instead focused on finding proof of the Serpent rather than dwell on the deeper meaning of the contact. He was still alive and now had quite a tale to tell. He only needed proof.

I suppose you're right. A moment? Helen slips away briefly, but after a few short minutes returns in a man's tunic with a bag slung on her back. It seems she's practiced. I know I'd be putting you two in danger if I stayed along as a prisoner of war. I am eternally grateful for your help. She reaches inside her shirt to put on an undergarment intended to hide her curves beneath the baggy clothing. It's reasonably convincing in the dark if you don't look too closely. Do you have a suggestion on where your men might not be? I imagine they'll attempt to scour the city. I can fit in my supplies' hiding space for a short time. Maybe until dusk tomorrow. She then takes out a plain but sharp dagger and offers it to Iantha. And could you please cut off my braid? I'd rather not use a knife blind so close to my neck.

The cut is uneven, but it helps hide Helen's identity. She thanks you and takes a rag to scrub off her make up. To an undiscerning eye, she looks like a youth whose beard has yet to grow in, embarrassingly late, graceful only because perhaps he's spent a good deal of time in the temple.
Mar 31, 2023 6:43 pm
Nikias looks Helen up and down and nods. "That should serve well enough. Keep yourself hidden when you can, keep your head down, and don't draw attention to yourself."

He turns to Iantha. "Nothing to see here, then - let us return and finish this war."

"Blessed be the virgin for her defense of the city. And blessed be the defenders for their sacrifice." He had nothing to offer Athena but more of his blood, which he cast into the fire before her shrine. "We thank The Virgin, she that abides no weakness and delights in strength."

Tiwaz was distracted from his prayer for a moment by the looters in their anarchy. Standing he makes an apologetic gesture to the effigy of Athena and points his hammer at them. He marveled at it, for even the bloodshed was not enough for the victorious looters. "Should we not just be grateful? Privileged as we are to walk upon this rugged old planet. Is this to be our lot? Is the truth really this sad? All I see is how much craves more."

Taking what blood he could collect he offered this to Athena's effigy. Bowing his head he continued. "Whatfore we sacrifice blood and gore before the eyes of the gods of war? Tell me if there is a greater truth than my own. I believe not that life could ever exist without the survival of the fittest. That forces of nature unseen exist far beyond my imagination."

Taking a slab of meat from a cooler part of the fire Tiwaz looked upon Athena trying to understand the necessity of this particular part of war. "Right or wrong? Is that not the same question as weak or strong? At the end of the day right or wrong depends on how we would execute the last executioner."

Turning the slab of meat over Tiwaz watched it carefully until it reached he preferred doneness. Then took it from the flame held ir before the Effigy of Athena.

"Who am I to complain. War is the nature of mankind. To believe otherwise is madness. Bless me oh Goddess for these gifts I am about to recieve. So mote it be."

Tiwaz hungrily devoured the offering.

May you see home again with the blessings of the gods, Helen prays before slipping into the shadows.

The majority of the fighting seems to have been completed. Soldiers gather their loot and prisoners, getting drunk on any wine they can find and filling their bellies with raided food. The relief in the air is palpable, at least among the Greeks. With the largest cacophony coming from the upper city, you head to the temple, where cries of sorrow morph into bawdy camp songs. The rest of the Greeks have arrived in full force, it seems, and that's when it hits you.

It's over.

Come dawn, or perhaps afternoon when at least your leaders can feign sobriety, you'll load into the ships. Then in less than a month you'll be home.

Home. For Iantha and Chryseis, not yet. Some day, but not yet. You long to mourn your kin and queen among your sisters, but tensions are high right now. You saved Helen, a single loc of her golden hair tied safely inside your armor so that your final acts of loyalty cannot be disputed. But first, a Hunt to clear your minds. To give wounds a chance to heal. To wet your blades on something not nearly as complicated as man.

How simple man is! At least to the Luwian. A full belly, bandaged wounds, the thrill of final victory, and a vision to contemplate as you rest. What more could you want? Well, Odysseus does owe you. It's been difficult to seek the king's wisdom while he's been using it for war. But he's bound to have a magnificent homecoming. It will be nice to partake, to see the lovely countryside again, and to bend the king's ear under far more pleasant circumstances.

Kouru, the idea of retiring to the forge, finally, with a wife by your side, is a pleasant one - regardless of who she is. Your father is a wise man. She'll certainly be lovely. Your imagination toys with the sound of clinking wine goblets mingled with the sounds of your tales and crackling of the forge. The pounding of hammers....pounding.....pounding......pounding in your skull...

But you're injured. Surely that's all this is, right?

For Nikias, arranging a noble husband for your daughter will be far less stressful than your hand in Helen's fate. You trust your wife has managed affairs wisely. Between her efforts and your honorable return, your little girl should want for nothing as long as she lives. However, when you reach the temple, the reality of these wives and daughters leaves a sour taste in your mouth. Your stomach turns at the sight of the palladium cracked on the ground, the faint scent of reptiles mingling with sacrificial meat, and the sound of one of Priam's daughters huddled on the steps, unbound yet frozen by her own madness.

Raging stormclouds...Scattered shields...Death on the rocks...

She takes nervous glances to Ajax, who is celebrating - albeit subdued - beside your king Odysseus. Other soldiers pry the golden decoratios off the toppled statue of Athena, for the statue itself is far too large for the ship. Nobody pays the woman heed, but you believe her. Maybe it was one large act. Maybe it was a variety of slaps in the face. But Athena is offended.

"War..." came the thought unbidden as the Spartan leans against the door post of the temple, his shield propped up against his side to flash his family insignia to any who would seek to enter "War never changes." Though the Greeks as a whole were a rabble compared to his own countrymen, they fought well enough in the phalanx and died honorably enough on the field. He had given orders under the blessing of a war king and trusted that he'd be obeyed. There were enough Spartans among the temple looters, he hoped, to maintain order and propriety for the property of their king, their city, and of course the man who had laid first claim. Glancing over his shoulder the scout would notice the shivering form of "the crazy one", and shaking out the ringing in his ears would order "You. There's no time for that. Gather your father and any of your family who are here to my side. You'll want my protection before this is all done". Protection. Defense. Attack. Aggression. What did they all have in common? Thoughts flitted about his mind to the beat of the drums... glasses... hammer... as a finger reaches up, wet with blood, and traces a message on the stone doorpost for the ages "𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤕𐤇 𐤏𐤓𐤏𐤊". His men were at their task, his honour fulfilled, and his future was full of promise. In a month he'd be home richer than any man had any right to be, royalty among his slaves, beauty and power in the city temple, and his Good King justified at last after a grievous wrong had been done.

All was well.

Nikias sighs at the sight of the temple. His anger blooms, though he knows best and does all that he can to temper it. This is his King, and who is he - shepherd and soldier that he is - to question his King. Instead, he approaches the young woman, this daughter of Priam. He kneels and tries to catch her attention. "Are you hurt?" he asks, "Can you talk?"

Raging stormclouds...Scattered shields...Death on the rocks...

Kouru's command catches her attention like a confused puppy. Nikias's question snaps her out of her trance, and her eyes return from silver to their normal brown. Hurt? She does look roughed up, but nothing long-lasting. She glances around the room at her fallen life. Yes, sir, I can talk. But I belong to Sparta now. This isn't accusatory or spiteful, just a warning.
Apr 3, 2023 4:52 pm
Kouru nods at his fellow veteran, glad to see a familiar face among the unbearded youths and their... choices "Cousin Nikias" comes the even (if slightly wheezed) greeting "I've managed to claim the temple, and all within. What can be salvaged will be brought to the great temples in Sparta" Oh, he's talking to the princess. "Huh. A king and a princess. There's a tale there, in the making. That which is broken being recast..." The old soldier raises his helmet, his blue and red striped crest catching the temple light as his eyes are revealed with wide, unfocused pupils "There was a bit of... youthful indiscretion, but nothing that won't be remedied with proper sacrifice when things have calmed down. Come, child. Your family." shifting his attention back to Cassandra he'd wince, pulling a pouch from his belt and beginning to pack his wounds with herbs "Get them here in front of me, and get them known. I don't want what nearly happened to you to happen to your sisters, your brothers, or any other of your kinfolk."

I am Helenus, and this is my twin sister Cassandra. We're seers of Lord Apollo and Lady Athena, respectively. You have our father and our mother Hecuba. We've watched all our other kin fall by battle, raid, or despair, and any surviving concubines are probably claimed as war brides by now. Wise Odysseus has even managed to get Hector's son killed. The sounds of a song from the bowels of the Enclave underneath the temple of Ares attracted Tiwaz' attention. Normally such an omen would be ignored, except Tiwaz recognized the song, a Luwian lament, or perhaps Hurrian. It didn't take long for him to find a slave, a quite large one at that. Armored and locked in a cage, prepared sport and a sacrifice for Ares that had never been performed prior to the invasion of Troy.

"Do you want me to kill you well? Wait for the Greeks to make sport of you? Or would you follow me to glory?" He asked of the slave and brandished his hammer.

Nikias, reaching to comfort the young girl, pulls his hand back swiftly as thoughts - images? - rushed into his mind. Tragedy, terribly tragedy.

He stands as Kiuru approaches, unsure of what he had just envisioned. "Youthful indiscretion," Nikias echoes, struggling to mask his contempt for what was happening. "Athena will not be pleased, Friend Kiuru. The temples of Sparta be damned, do you believe the Goddess will allow these treasures to make it that far? I would not wish to be aboard the ship carrying these trinkets. In the same fleet for that matter, though I have not that choice. And these young ones...if ten years was too long a wait, the men's intent to sack this city may have grown similarly too ripe." He catches Iantha's eyes, sees her grip tighten on the spear, and understands her feelings.

As the young man, this Seer of Apollo, appears and bears into them, Nikias can only lower his head. He waits in silence, listening to his own heartbeat in rhythm to the boy's words of concern towards his sister. "Sparta has claimed you," Nikias relents, "but I still feel sorrow for your family. Things could have gone better - would have gone better - had this war never started. Yet here we stand."

My Good King is just, and I'm sure he will not object to keeping a family together as that's exactly what brought this war about." Turning his head to glance over his shoulder the old veteran would sigh, hands continuing to pack herbs in the bandages covering the still dripping gash running from collarbone to abs "We will offer sacrifice before we set sail, and... we will hope that the gods of war will honor our victory. Frankly" Here he leans forward to lightly headbutt the other man in an old soldier's salute, bringing him close enough to murmur "I'm going to pray that she spares my ship for keeping the idiots off of her women" "Drums and anvils, maidens dancing in procession and wailing around the pyre, a child cursed and blessed by the gods... Troy was burning already. Many children were and would be lost on this day. "Why did I see that one? Where were those cliffs?"

What did most of these boys, even these kings, know of family?

He sighs and looks to Iantha and laughs, "A hydra? If only I might join you on that adventure. Alas, my fate, I hope, shall bring him home, to Ithaca, not the beaches of Sparta. Perhaps our friend Kouru could accept your presence aboard his ship, however?" He looks to the man, "These women are most lucky and blessed of the Gods. Kouru flashes a wry smile between his fellow soldiers as they banter, nodding along "Sparta would be honoured to host you for a fortnight of feasting to celebrate our triumph here. There are things to set aright, the temple to bless, sacrifices to make, and obligations to care for prior to any new adventure" as the Ithican king makes his announcement he'd frown, smelling the rising scent of wine in the air "... and of course there is a legacy to safeguard. But should duty allow, I'd be greatly pleased to form a few more legends before settling down. Sparta has a great love and respect for strong women, if you've ever a mind to settle down as I do" the bleeding had finally stopped and he'd frown, shaking his head at the thought of the near future "Cousin Nikias, might I impose upon you to keep an eye on these four? I fear they will be abused before they can be safely loaded, and I plan to take at least the siblings into my home unspoiled... looking past the city his eyebrows would grow together as he glowers, picking up his bow with a wince "The blade is cast, to whom does it belong? To the one who made it, or the one who made it a weapon?" "Daughter of the Lady" the use of a title like that was high respect to a warrior woman, to whom he turned "I have one more task which requires swift feet and a sober mind. Will you range with me while the ships are loaded?" his king, after all, had called for 'the family', and he still had that itch on the back of his head. Where exactly are those cliffs?

"Thanks chief!" Unceremoniously Tiwaz saluted Odysseus by raising a large golden chalice full of wine he had stolen from the palace."I plan on earning glory with you for a long time yet." The enormous Barbarian roars over the din of drinking. Then sneers at Iantha who had been so very rude. The scabs on his face where the snake had bit him cracked and bled most sinister. "Someone has to show this lot manners afterall." Tipping the serving chalice, a vessel meant to serve several people he drained the entire contents in three large gulps and belched loudly to show exactly what he thought of decorum.

Kurush slaps Tiwaz's shoulder. Come. If you haven't claimed your full bounty yet, I imagine we could secure horses. I have not been to the motherland in years. Singing an old Luwian drinking song, they stroll out into the night.

Kouru, you do know where the cliffs are. They're along the edge of the city walls to the north.

Nikias's mood darkens immediately at the mention of this temple's plunder aboard his own ship, but all he can manage is a weak, "My king," in response to Odysseus's commands.

He looks to the others, "It looks as though we may need all the luck, and prayers, we can aboard mine own ship as well." It's clear he's concerned about this turn of events. "Kouru, seems we're to sail together, your ship and mine while we help deliver these, hm, spoils."
Apr 8, 2023 7:41 pm
Iantha nods her head towards Odyessus as he peaks to her, giving a polite smile. 'I can;t say we will stay long, we have other business to attend to. Still if Nikias will give us a lift to your your land, we may as well see the area before we carry on.'

Kouru's query is the needed distracted to stop her getting drawn back into conflict with Tiwaz, ad she raises and eyebrow, trying to figure out the exact nature of his words. As a woman among an army of mostly men there had of coure been proposals or various kinds, all turned down.

'I have no mind to settle down for a long time. Artemis guides me, I even share in her vow, and I hope she will grant me hunts till I can no longer ber the weight of my spear.' The polite smile is back as she bows her head, hoping no offence is taken. While they had not fought side by side, the Spartan seemed honourable, especially in respect to the remaining survivors.

At his second request a look of confusion crosses her face but she nods. [b]'Very well, I Will lend you my spear. As long as it is not stealth you are after. '[ /b] She raps her knuckle on her breastplate. Though not obvious the protective piece was thicker than most, but it did come with the downside of weight and restriction.

Though curious what the Spartan was up to, she was not ure he wished to stay behind and party right now. A walk and fresh air would do her min good.

Nikias, you may tag along if you like, otherwise let me know what you're up to.
Kouru leads you outside the city with the focus of a hound, muttering without quite realizing it.

Wings and wind...Children and cliffs...

He takes you along the city walls to the north, where the structure of the city borders a rocky beach. The lapping of the tides mixes with the now-muddled sounds of the burning city, providing an odd sense of calm. You can see and smell a variety of trash and rubble: broken jars, irreparable supplies, and other more organic groupings.
OOC:
You may roll perception to search. Kouru, recall you haven't directly mentioned why you're here.

A soldier's salute is flashed to Nikias - he's a superior officer, after all - and the scout nods absently as he ranges out past flung-open gates at a leisurely pace. His eyes immediately begin scanning both the shore and the land, easily noting the firm footfalls of the amazon behind him "I... saw something in the temple, and King Odyssius' command stirred something in the back of my mind". He was familiar with the habits of most animals and knew how to track any human, stag, and most birds, but how... "I believe that... I think that we're looking for a boy child. I saw... there!" a (somewhat shaky) arm would point to what is seemingly yet another random chunk of the cliff face as he sets off at his usual speed, a yard-eating lope as eyes flash, trying to take in every tiny piece of information.

Nothing. Not even a scrap of fabric on the rocks, and you're certain this was the place. In some ways, this is a relief. But it leaves you with far more questions than answers.

'A child?' She furrows her brow. ' How is it you came by this information?'

Even as she ask she joins him in searching, but turns up nothing he himself doesn't see.

"Yes, a child" His expression turns suspicious as he walks to a particular spot, turning over a single rock, then shaking his head "I had a... vision in the temple. Though I'm not sure if it was brought on by the gods or a blow to the head at this point." Never the less, he continues searching almost absently, clearly going through the motions "How can there be nothing at all? Not a feather, not a single scrap of fur, not a blade of grass out of place?"

There is indeed a pounding in your head. Maybe you should sit down.

Nikias asks a pair of his men, stationed nearby, to stay with the four Kouru asked about, and quickly hurries after the other two. "I will follow," he says, "my men are loyal and are virtuous."

"Perhaps a healer should see to your head, if you took such a blow, Cousin?" Nikias suggests. "There seems to be nothing here but refuse."

Checked with Yeo, he said he'd go back.
By the time you return to the upper city, the last of the fires are burning out and most of the soldiers are wrapping up their pillaging. As expected, Nikias' men watched your prisoners with full decorum, though they're glad for a chance to go get some sleep before casting off tomorrow.

Helenus, as a priest of Apollo, is able to tend to Kouru's wounds somewhat better than his sister. He looks the soldier over and replaces wrappings as appropriate, but pauses with a wry smile.

Reminds you of a fledgling, eh, Cassandra?

The girl, who has been staring intently at Kouru, nods once. This term doesn't appear to be an insult. Helenus chuckles.

You'll sleep the rest off. Most of it, at any rate.

It was a wise suggestion, and he'd take it. Perhaps it was the strain of battle, or the shock of victory, or the near-death experience, "Or perhaps it's simply long past time for me to be home". He'd be nearly silent on the quick walk back to the city, his reverie broken only by the light banter between the siblings "Interesting choice of words. We were looking for a child borne aloft by wings. That or chasing a fever dream. Get a blessing from your parents, they'll not be traveling with us. My king has use for them, and you are temple goods" At long last Kouru would sit, resting his feet and his aching back before looking up at his newfound companions "With your permission of course, cousin. I think that my king will be appeased in taking his frustrations out on old Priam without us risking the wrath of allowing two priests to be abused during our journey home"

Not trying to cut Iantha out and her opinion would be clearly welcome, but it's Nikias' boat

Nikias takes a deep breath and exhales through his nose, his jaw clenched in thought. "I could allow this. These two may come aboard my ship. My men know better than to...take out their frustrations in such ways."

He turns to the young ones, Helenus and Cassandra. "My men stood with you this day, you have some inkling of their worth. For better or worse, you now belong to Sparta. I will not deny them that, but I will give you a choice - perhaps the last such choice you'll get: you may sail with me, or sail with your family. Decide by morning."
