November 26th, 1924, Velley of the Kings, Egypt

Your team has mostly been gathered together by British aristocrat, Richard Joseph Lyttelton III, to bring your skills to the unearthing and subsequent investigation of a previously undiscovered tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Following the recent discovery of the tomb of the boy pharaoh, King Tutankhamun, there is excitement around every dig and this is no exception.
You have been working tirelessly with shovel, spade, and trowel in the Egyptian Valley of Kings. The sun beats down upon you as you carefully unveil the façade of an ancient structure cut deep into a cliff face, buried by the sands of several millennia. Your party of contracted laborers works like busy ants and soon a doorway is uncovered. You stand proudly at the top of thirteen steps that descend to an entryway covered by a large stone slab.
"Sir! Mr Lyttelton! If you are ready I shall have them clear the slab!" It is clear Dardan is quite proud of the work his men have done. He grabs an iron rod and calls to three other burly workers to do the same. "Give the word sir!"
Baz strikes a match and lights his lantern, he scoops up a brush from the tools piled into crates near the entrance and with a nod to his fellows he slowly descends the stairs with a keen eye on the walls for any markings, occassionally swiping the brush on the wall to remove ancient dust that might obscure any notes. He murmers to himself in thought "Letsee, most folks got themselves a sign or two at the gate, No Trespassin' Beware of this or that critter."
"Even Windsor Castle has a sign out front that reads This Here is Windsor Castle, ceptin' this is a back door..."
A silk neckerchief pulled up on his nose and mouth to defend against dust, he seeks the right adjective for the Engineer's pride, the Adventurer's impatience, the Writer's fired imagination.
He weighs his words, knowing the eager readers back home will devour each sentence.
This will make a fine article - it will stroke the egos of those armchair archaeologists at home just fine, giving them the chance to vicariously live this moment... And giving me blank cheques from the paper for the foreseeable future...
"The workers have to be riggin that crane back into shape to get this up again right?'". After a few moments of no sound that can drown out the racing heart in his chest Baz looks to Dardan with wide eyes and hope.
Also, can I have a Listen check from Baz

He also learns that the Pharaoh rejected the concept of an afterlife, claiming it held nothing compared to the sights and visions he could unveil in this waking world. His followers would behold the truth while those unworthy would rest with their old gods in an early grave.
Alistair also notices there are cracks at certain points of the walls, behind which there appears to be a dark empty space.
"Whooo boy, that puts a chill in my spine. Mr. Ferguson, looks like you got a handle on the lingusitics jus fine." Seeing Alistair notice the cracks in the wall Baz holds his lantern up high and clears a way for Dardan or Lyttleton to get in closer under the light to see.

"I suppose your right this place is probably just as full if mundane traps as it is of the magical wards." As Alistair says this he stops frozen in place not wanting to move a muscle except maybe his mouth in case he might cause the walls to collapse on them.
"Let me look at it my friend. It may be I can reverse the trap. Please to bring the light close Baz."

Dardan takes the lead with Baz holding the lantern and the two start to move slowly down the corridor. There are more cracks in the walls on both sides and about 25 feet in, at the far end of the passageway, is a sealed archway, etched with symbols similar to those on the door slab at the tomb's entrance. Several sections of plaster, a small ornate table, and a golden chest sit in front of the archway. The items seem to have been dragged through a large hole that has been chiseled out from the bottom left-hand corner of the plaster wall. A crouching adult could easily squeeze through the gap and into whatever room lies beyond. The table is considerably rotted. The golden chest is ornately decorated and doesn't appear to have a lock.

Baz holds the light closer to the glyphs on the wall looking to catch anything the others missed and drift towards the chest. Holding the light above it frowning.
"Well if they already came and looted then what’s this here for. Anyone wanna chance a curse?"
"Much was rumoured about Tutankhamun's curse... Let's see if our own little curse here is just as intriguing for the readers..."
He asks the hyeroglyphs experts, "Can we make head or tails of it yet? Any juicy snippets?"
The blockage is a thick layer of plaster over a layer of wood.
"Hm, it might be a bit tricky," he answers. "I suggest we quickly find a way out, and worry about the history later. Before we become part of it."

He quickly kneels by tunnel and calls thru to the others.
"The tunnel is being safe, but only one by one be coming now, please."
He’ll keep the candle in front of the tunnel exit so the others will have some light as they crawl thru.
Every so often he glances back around at the room.
To the east, a huge stone slab blocks an archway to what is probably another chamber. On either side of the slab, two large statues seem to stand guard. Across the room to the north, an open archway leads to another room. It is evident there was once a plaster wall sealing that archway, that has been completely demolished and bits of it lie scattered on the floor around the entrance.

Lantern held close and a focused examination of this spot for any signs of a doorway secret or otherwise Baz begins to mutter more to himself as he talks himself through the problem.
"Across the room to the north, an open archway leads to another room."
Then there's the slab to the east guarded by the corpses.
"Sorry! Nerves." he explains to those who stare at him
With the obvious exit pointed out Baz moves with the lantern through the exit to the North.
Baz steps over the scattered plaster and into a room half the size of the antechamber. Compared to that room, it is modestly filled with religious artifacts. The walls are lined with 3 inch high funerary cones made from clay. On the southern and northern walls are two large murals while at the eastern wall is a shrine on which stands an inverted 5 foot tall golden ankh. Hundreds of golden tendrils reach out from the symbol, which though motionless, give the impression of movement and look distinctly unsettling.
A large mat lies at the shrine's base, on which sprawls a human skeleton clothed in decaying tatters. Beside the corpse are a satchel and a small sack.

Baz is aware that the symbol of the Ankh represents life however the inverted aspect and the reaching tentacles speak of wilful desecration and malign intent.
The shrine itself holds countless pieces of ancient incense in small compartments honeycombed through the base. Nearly one hundred tiny statues of men stand around the base of the shrine.
Scanning the walls, Baz's focus goes to the southern wall depicts a large painting of a smiling, black-robed pharaoh holding an oversized set of scales, on which a heart is being weighed against a platter of dead animals, A kneeling figure with the head of a wolf, has a chest wound that is being stretched open by two small men (identical to the figurines). There are some hieroglyphs below the painting.
Baz translates aloud, "The trial has been passed.Forever they shall be tied to this earth through their faithful beating heart, strong of body, awaiting the return of their master."
Baz pulls his notebook out and then thinks better and pulls his treasured copy of translations from professor Murray out. Instead of consulting the main text he starts running his fingers down the notes in the margins. How does the heart and the animals figure into all this?

My suggestions we examine the writings, and with Occult skill rolls hope we can figure a "magical" way outta here. Probably means some of us die horribly, but that’s CoC for you.
I am also curious about the skeleton lying in front of the altar. Who is that? What can it tell us about the setup? Also, how did thd tomb raisers die/disappear?
Dardan is mostly "egg head" skills, but he has Occult & Spot Hidden, do he can support someone else doing the research.
Dardan starts trying to find something of those types around the main chamber, especially wherever he thinks the original sarcophagus was situated.
Every now and again Baz glances nervously at the dark pharaoh. Ah hell, I cannot die here and now
I think it is a good idea for look for false walls, hidden mechanisms. But I think we should also try to decipher the hieroglyphics and look for an Occult message. Anything at all that will get us out of there.
He gasps at the inverted ankh and its many tendrils, and is unsettled by the strangeness of the chamber decorations.

Dardan, Arthur and Richard - in the opening Passageway that leads off the "front door", down at the opposite end to the "front door", by the hole into the antechamber. As this is Round 4 Dardan has lit the dynamite and those three are crouching down in cover beside that hole.

Christopher - partially in the Antechamber with the beast, partially in the hole that leads into Passageway
Baz - in the Burial room, to the East of the Antechamber, that the beast came out of and about to walk into another new room
I think the last movement in Round 4 is now the beast.

Christopher barely gets the words out to Arthur and Dardan amidst ragged breaths, his mind and lungs both racing to catch up.
"What in the bloody hell was that?"
Auf Erden und im Himmelreich. Baz’s hands shake as he opens the chest. His eyes squint even in the dim light afraid of what he shall reveal.

What's Alistair doing this round?
Keep yer wits man
Baz raises the knife in his hand to the heart, ready to cut into it like an apple but his mouth twists and sours and he grits his teeth and holds the blade up high to strike at it. His vision flashes back to the wall carvings in the rooms just beyond where he now sits, the scenes of the dark pharaoh commanding his priests and the heart being weighed on scales.
It would seem that Twain was right when he said "The heart is the real fountain of youth." Well buddy I aim to piss in yer fountain.
Baz plunges his hunting knife into the beating heart and winces as he strains to hear any reactions.
"Sir! Sir Lyttleton, it is killed by you," he slaps RJH on the back, then goes red in embarrassment and mumbles and apology. He turns to the workers and shouts at them in Arabic, demanding to know where the other workers are gone.
We are not safe yet, as these others could be waiting to rob and kill us. Caution is needed here.
Without quite stopping to chat he moves to the exit and looks through to the silloutted scene of the beast on the ground and his pistol weilding boss standing in the doorway. Broadly smiling and with a bit of gusto Baz strikes a match on the smooth tomb stone walls and puts light to his cigar.
"Good god I need a breathe of fresh air"
Then he looks down the steps to where Christopher is taking photographs.
"With this, I do not know," he shrugs his shoulders. "Many wild beasts in the desert. Maybe best to bury it, hm?"
Rewards
At the end of a scenario, you get to roll against skills you used successfully. If you fail the roll (roll over your skill level) then you may gain 1d10 on that skill. Below are the skills you used without the aid of Luck, Push or Bonus Dice. If you spot any I missed, let me know which page it was on.
In addition, Alistair gains 5 Cthulhu Mythos points (this comes with your first bout of madness) and his max sanity is reduced by 5 as a result.
You also may take an increase of 1d6 to your Credit Rating to represent the increase in your fortunes following the successful discovery of the tomb
You also all gain 1d6 sanity for escaping the confines of the tomb

I have played Call of Cthulhu quite a few times, both in person and here in GP, so I may not be the best person to comment. But I enjoyed the scenario, and as a beginner/introduction scenario it was nice and short. Often they are longer, with a lot of need for characters to interact with each other and Non PCs. So they tend to be very "wordy". As this one was so short, and a lot of action, it skipped that. I think that would help a player new to CoC.
I found it was not too overwhelming with the need for skill rolls, or trying to figure out affects of Sanity. It gave opportunities to Push rolls, or spend Luck, so that helped show that rule mechanism in play.
It helped that you gave lots of explanation whenever there was need, again especially around the affects of Sanity.
As a intermediate level Cthulhu player I found it was a good introduction.
Thank you for running the game, it was lots of fun. It is always nice to survive a CoC scenario pretty much intact!

I have played in and run a lot of systems, this is my first time playing CoC, and my it has been ages since playing a Play by Post game. So some feedback for me would be great as I now want to do more of these.
It was super short, sweet, and perfect for introducing the mechanics and the game concepts. I am left wanting a lot more.
The character interaction was a little low but what there was had a lot of fun dynamics (thats the people, not the module per se, but good to note.)
I felt like I stumbled onto the means to kill the beast (Sorry, I know that narratively we are assuming RJL did it, love that from Dardan btw) If I had run for the door like the others we would be dead probably. I was looking at the map and with the dynamite ant one end it looked a lot like a cannon to me...
Once the clues clicked with the heart and wall images it was pretty satisfying.
Looks like I succeeded on all my rolls, no improvements but for the cash!

Was it me that got a clue that wasn't shared... if it was from the sarcophagus room or the treasury I was on the lam at that point... if i was earlier, I sinned.
The trial has been passed.
Forever they shall be tied to this earth through their faithful beating heart, strong of body, awaiting the return of their master.
I have played CoC since the 1980's and usually the Classic or Gaslight eras. It has always been my favourite game, although I have played a bunch of others such as D&D, Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, etc. I find the rules so simple compared to other systems, and the scenarios bring up very difficult challenges that can rarely be defeated by fighting.
Great Roleplaying folks, and many thanks to our Keeper for running it so smoothly!

This might also have much to do with the fact that I didn't have a ton of successes, that led me towards a solution.
On a more positive note I do think this allowed me to get a half decent grasp of the rules.

All that said I hope to get to play again and possibly bring this character forward into another game, definitely didn't expect to get the chance to "develop" a character (much less to have survived a brawl with the monster).
