Some folks might be in need of the PDF. People may feel it’s grey territory to share digital copies. However, if we were sat around my kitchen table playing together, you’d all be using my book, so… Thats my view of it.

Attributes:
• Physique
• Agility
• Intellect
• Willpower

Roll 2d6+3 to generate each of the four stats.

In-game, you roll against your attribute score on a d20, aiming to meet it or roll under. So a Physique of 12 would have you aiming to roll anything from 1-12 on a d20 to succeed.

Concept:
This isn’t so much what you are, but rather who you are. It will be used to determine some skills you might have. It will also feature when we deal with things like advantage, disadvantage and setbacks.

• Meddlesome Kid
• Alcoholic Detective
• Retired Veteran
• Suspicious ER Nurse

Archetype:
• The Tough
• The Nimble
• The Smart
• The Gifted

Ones I’m not 100% on, but I do have access to:

• The Magi
• The Spirit Guardian

This is what you are. Each archetype has a prime attribute, a recovery roll and some special abilities.

Complications:
The next step is creating an interesting Complication for the character. Everyone has one, something that makes their life more difficult and exciting.

• Hunted by the police
• Has duties to a religious order
• Enemies with a former master

Equipment:
Players can start with any and all mundane equipment that makes sense for their character concept and archetype.

Each character also starts the game with one weird item.

Pay attention to encumbrance: In game terms, each character has an Encumbrance limit equal to their Physique score.

Final Details:
• Vitality - Same as Physique stat + 1point per level of character.
• Sanity - Same as Intellect stat.
• Luck - All characters start the game with 3 points of Luck.
• Money - Money is abstracted in this game. Players start with 2 Money, meaning their usually down on their luck and looking for a big score.

Optional:
Some questions that you might consider answering, just to flesh out your character. Pick one, two… a few?

Heyo! Thanks for running this, KCC!

Quick question. What kind of horrors are we fighting against, do we know? Alien, supernatural, vampires, demons, etc.? Is this a secret war? Is the church involved, or some secret sect? How about corporations? Just want to get a bit of a bead on the setting.
Apr 16, 2023 8:56 pm
Thanks for the invite.

To quickly clarify - Are we rolling all 4 then assigning, or is it a case of rolling specifically for each stat?

Had an idea for a Smart/Nimble conwoman street magician, who uses sleight of hand and magic tricks to entertain...and sometimes alleviate people of belongings/money, before accidentally picking the wrong mark and finding out that true magic does in fact exists.

Of course if going for the latter stat generation that may not work out.

Great questions, Harrigan. I will post a setting thread today, probably on my way to work. For purposes of setting, it’s probably safe to assume it’s rather kitchen sinky (if you need justifications or backstory for characters.)

i.e Everything is out there! Werewolves, Vamps, Grey Men, Demons, Angels, etc.

But a setting thread might answer more specific questions.
As for stats. There’s no specific down-the-line method outlined in the book. Maybe it’s the built-in assumption that it will be used, but I won’t get hung up over it!

I’m happy for people to roll for stats and assign!

Stats first! Complication: Hunted by terrorists! Archetype: The Nimble. Concept: Assassin. Weird thing: set of polyhedral dice (how apt!)

Absolutely. Tables are for inspiration purposes. I won’t hold anyone to a roll!

Well I'll roll down the line and see what happens, and rejig if necessary.

As Nezz is also going Nimble, may alter the concept to Gifted, though someone who only recently learned that.

Description
Handsome, Tall, Muscular. Prefers archaic clothes, and to be clean shaven.

Story
Galaine of House Grenfell, better known in his day as Sir Galaine the Resolute, is a monster-slaying knight from 12th century England. A member of The Order of the Third Christening, he is, in the 21st century, a man out of time. Used to hunting demons and burning witches in the dark countryside of England and mainland Europe, he finds himself brought forward in time and paired with other hunters with similar goals, if not approaches and mindsets.

Galaine once wielded sacred weapons forged and blessed for his purpose, but they were lost when he was thrown forward into the future. The hunt is where he is most at home. He struggles to understand the society he now lives in, and has largely removed himself from it. He lives on his own in a van near the river, but has been befriended by a local girl who witnessed his slaying a terrifying beast. She provides him with information and acts as a conduit to the greater world.

Wow! Thanks, Nezz! That’ll be great.
It looks like things are shaping up as:

•An out-of-time Tough with a supernatural enemy.
Who is this supernatural enemy? Are they recently acquired? Are they also out-of-time? Did you chase them here? Did you get sent here and they are still around all these years later?

•A Gifted street magician who picked the wrong target.
Who did you mess with that you ended up regretting? Did you have your powers before the incident? Did the incident lead to the realization you had powers? Are they still a feature/problem your life or was it a momentary issue?

•A ? nimble hunted by terrorists.
Foreign or domestic? Why are they on your tail?

•And C1nder’s idea!
TBD
Apr 18, 2023 3:58 am
I've been hung up on the terrorist part. I'm leaning towards domestic. Maybe a modern-day version of the Pinkertons? My concept would be a sniper assassin who takes out high ranking corrupt officials and corporate CEOs.

Concept: Naive & Goodhearted Ex-Cop, turned Cynic.

Searching for hope in the last place he's looked: the bottom of a bottle.

Physique: 6
Agility: 12
Intellect: 12
Willpower: 10

Archetype: Nimble
Complication: Enemies with an Influential Politician

Equipment: (6 encumbrance) Telescoping truncheon, Revolver .38 special, Tactical Armor (M), 2x Flash Grenade, 1x Smoke Bomb, Handcuffs, Liquid Courage

Weird Item: Crystal Hourglass

Vitality: 7
Sanity: 12
Luck: 3
Money: 2

Name: Brydon Barringer

Background Bullet Points:
- Grew up seeing his city going to hell, decided he'd be a cop to 'do something about it'
- Once joining up with the force, it became clear to him how corrupt the police were - the 'good' cops being fewer and further between than he ever imagined.
- He made honest efforts to build a network of the good ones in the police force, and made some headway but realized in his digging that the corruption went all the way to the top, through the chief, throughout internal affairs, and into the mayor's office
- He and over a dozen of his friends in the force worked in secret to tie these crimes back to the mayor but they were set up in a coordinated effort to destroy all their efforts.
- Their group were split up and over the years, under quiet circumstances, terrible things started happening to each one of them, one by one.
- Only six, including Brydon, remain. One is a lieutenant in the police force still, one is in a sanitarium, one is wheelchair-bound, one is a now a senatorial aid, and the last is a transient (presumed alive, but not seen for months by anyone)
- Brydon himself quit the force when his friends started dropping dead, trying to quietly put distance between himself and his troubles.
- The mayor has been behind this coordinated effort to eliminate Brydon and his group. Brydon suspects as much but has given up any hope of learning the truth, let alone of finding a way to make the mayor pay for what he's done.

I'm open on these things, and happy to connect them to A) the plot, if there is one, B) other PCs, or C) NPCs / parts of the setting.

So, on the supernatural enemy, was definitely thinking demon. Maybe an evil sorcerer, but I think I like the idea of a body-hopping demon more.

They are not recently acquired, they are an old foe... who is also out-of-time. Galaine did indeed chase them to this time, either sent by powerful magicians in his order, or by chasing the demon through some temporal portal back in the old days. So the demon is still around -- maybe there have been some scrapes with it, maybe he's never laid eyes on it in the 21st century.

The part that's up in the air is how long Glaine has been on the ground in modern times. I like elements of 1) Just Arrived -- so playing up the sense of wonder and fear he might have over how things are, 2) He's been here a while and understands his place in this weird society -- stranger in a strange land. Or 3) Galaine has been in modern times a *long* time, and has now sort of a shadow of his former self. He might be an alcoholic, or prone to any other number of vices.

Other thing to mention is that he's got magic weapons -- shield, sword, armor. Not expecting to start with any of that, but I might hint at his longing for his original head.

Did the bottle ever cost Bryndon anything personal? A wife? An estranged child?

Nezzeraj
Are you a rogue element? Or does someone fix the hits for you and wire you the payment?

Harrigan
How would you know the Demon when you saw it? Do they have a giveaway? (Yellow Eyed Demon, anyone?)
Apr 19, 2023 12:47 am
Oh fun - yes! His wife and his house. He has a daughter who he desperately wants to stay in contact with. He's let his family go for fear of their safety though. He's anxious that he's a walking timebomb waiting for the shoe to drop. A question comes up about what he's been doing since he quit the police force - let's go with garbage truck driver.

Hunter assumes that you’re a cell and operating together to do ‘the job.’

Shall we make the same assumption here? Someway, somehow you’ve all coalesced at Dark Diner/Big Al’s Pizza/The Wolf and Fang Bar or some other establishment?
Apr 19, 2023 5:34 am
That works for me!

Yep, like that.

As for the "tell," I don't know the yellow-eyed demon reference. From some WB pop culture I don't know, I imagine? ;)

I like that fine, but could also be the smell of brimstone, or a certain smile everyone it possesses has.

Ok, I got Brydon updated to be a Smart. It's really tough figuring out where to put my one low stat! I dumped Willpower, which I think makes sense for his predicament. I also added some more details to his background to support these changes.

He works as a garbage truck driver in the morning (knows the streets and the city pretty damn well!) and at night, between drinks, he's working to piece together all the shady dealings of the city. At first it was all about corruption, but the spiderweb has grown to show there's a whole lot more going on - more than he ever thought could be real.

I was fulfilling a hit contract when the target didn't die from my sniper round. They got up and had blue blood splattered on them. I am pretty sure they were one of those lizard people who can change their appearance to look like humans.

Sorry guys the week has been rough -

Lucille Rayner has never really enjoyed rules. Bouncing between foster homes from a oung age, she learned how to read people and use that to her advantage. Wehile teenage years involved sprees of petty theft and just being a nuisance, she learned it was fair easier to convnce someone to give her something than to take it.

Practicing sleight of hand as well as confidence tricks she prefers to get by going for to various establishments and amazing, or tricking, people out of their money.
Then she picked the wrong target, lifting the wallet of someone while she distracted them with a flashy card trick. Only to be tracked down later by said target in a much more monstrous form later that evening, les than pleased with her.

That moment shattered her perception of the world, not just that monster's exist, but that she was in fact one of them as in her terror she managed to generate some sort of psychic barriers to defend herself from what would have been a deadly blow. She fled leaving the city. Her target turned hunter however turned out to be a member of an organized crime group, and not willing to forgive any slight even as minor as a lost wallet, forcing the her to keep and eye out and constantly move from place to place.. which wasn't too different from how she lived before hand.

------------
Who did you mess with that you ended up regretting? - Alexis Cosgrave, a werebeast who it turns out, did not appreciate his wallet being stolen. Punishing any slight against him or his crew, while she is not a top priority he would very much appreciate Luccille dead, as a message to others.
Did you have your powers before the incident? - She did but up until then had only been using them subtly, improving her own slight of hand abilities, and charming others into liking her.

Did the incident lead to the realization you had powers? - Yes, revealing she can generate psychic force fields. Since the incident she's been experimenting and now as more control hover her other ones as well, which she uses to her advantage.

Are they still a feature/problem your life or was it a momentary issue? - While not being actively hunted, she does have to keep checking over her shoulder, as Alexi does not appreciate sleights against him going unpunished, and a contact may see turning over her location as a way to gain a favour.

Easy peasy - building off of what I had put together earlier: the mayor is a powerful creature of some sort. Demon, maybe, in human form? Vampire? Lich? Something that as Brydon started connecting the dots, they started intersecting in impossible ways. The clues started to lead to nowhere, where the only way to explain things were to recognize that what he thought was reality, wasn't.

Is it ok for him to not have DIRECTLY encountered any of this yet, but to have him be absolutely certain of the supernatural world through his investigation and studies - having enough indirect evidence that he feels he knows what's out there but is only about to come face to face with that world soon enough?
Apr 21, 2023 2:44 am
What was your first interaction with the supernatural?

Galaine was a young boy at a remote monastery in 12th century England where one of the monks read an ancient text he shouldn't have. A dark power was loosed, possessing the cleric, who proceeded to murder everyone in the monastery -- except Galaine. The boy fought off the black-eyed, grinning monk for a time, but as the fiend was about to end the lad, he instead marked his cheek with a yellowed talon and smiled. "Not yet," the thing had said. "In time, boy, but not yet."

That night was a terror for Galaine. His former master slaying the brothers at the monastery, some of those brother rising up later, haunting the place until a group of holy knights arrived to cleanse and consecrate the place. It was those knights, from the Order of the Third Christening, who took Galaine in... and who set him on the path he treads to this day.
I'm thinking this entity is the Mayor, C1NDER. That work?
Apr 21, 2023 4:00 am
That works great for me, Harrigan!
Apr 21, 2023 6:19 am
So has Galaine learned modern English? Did you decide how long he's been in the modern day?
Apr 22, 2023 2:02 am
Whatever works best for the story. Even if he's a recent arrival I don't see playing up an inability to communicate being terribly fun. But I'll try to give him a terrible Hollywood accent, without going too over the top. I guess I've been seeing him in the present for weeks or months, at least -- enough to have encountered the others, found a place to live (a van), made a friend, already fought some monsters, etc. But literally wide open on making adjustments as necessary.

I’m liking how everything is looking so far! I’m sure everyone’s done it, but those weird items could be good opportunities for roleplay.

I think the game might have legs. Working our way up to the mayor seems like a nice objective. Let’s stretch our legs out first and see how we like it!
