Chapter 2: Stormy Seas

Apr 17, 2023 5:35 pm
The rest of the night passes uneventfully. And most of the morning too, actually. The kings' insistence to leave at first light was barely manageable on their own fronts, let alone most of the men. But the delayed start is a pleasant reprieve considering your sleep was at first accosted with the inkling that something was wrong, that you would finally see monsters, that the vision wasn't all in your head.

The sky is blue and clear, oblivious to the chaos of the night before, let alone the decade. The twins grant their parents a tense farewell, though Menelaus insists that if they don't make it to Sparta, it will be through no active choice on his part.

Finally, to the sound of shouting and singing, your reduced fleet sets off. The wisps of cloud in the sky seem to act as arrows home, or perhaps serpents.
OOC:
Everyone is at full health, and can take 1 hero point for completing the previous chapter. Nikias and Kouru, please don't forget to claim your loot in the OOC thread. You have a little time to roleplay, but when you're good to move on, let me know.

Nikias stands aboard the prow of his ship as it sails away from Troy. Away from war. The ocean breeze never felt so good - it is almost as if he was home already.
OOC:
Am I correct to understand we, the PC's, are split across two ships? Kouru is on his own, right? And Nikias and Iantha (plus the two NPC's, Iantha's companion, and Nikias's men) are on Nikias's ship? How many other ships travel in formation w/ those two?

OOC:
My apologies. It's a little contrived to keep the meta intact. Kouru, the twins, and a decent amount of temple loot are on your ship. The story excuse is there's room, and Kouru is keeping an eye on Sparta's stuff. The real reason is I don't want to keep track of multiple ships :P

There'd be about 8 more heading back to Ithaca, though not fully packed with men.
Apr 19, 2023 12:15 am
OOC:
Ok, thanks! That works for me, for some reason I had a picture in my head that Kouru was on a separate ship, but the 'excuse' makes sense :D

"Gods, it's good to finally be out of that armour." while a soldier on campaign didn't wear his battle armour day in and day out, most kept some part - the shin and forearm guards generally, or in his own case the light leather under armour - on even when sleeping. It led to some interesting callouses, quite a bit of chafing, and a rather rancid smell all in all. He was glad to have taken the opportunity to make use of a clear spring well away from the crimsoned river flowing away from the still smoldering ruins of Troy to wash both his own body and all of his gear. The scout, as was his profession, had found a comfortable perch atop the crossbeam of the mast, one leg hooked around yet another example of his father's invention as he peers out to sea. Unbidden, a song comes to his lips... taught to him on the day of his departure from Sparta from a mentor long dead on the field "I fail to understand, the direction of the winds!"
OOC:
Sorry, I'll try and crack that out by Thursday!

Unlike Kouru, and likely many others, Iantha still bore her armour while on the ship. It was a comfort for her, a feeling of protection, and the weight was calmer. When out of it the lighter feeling was an odd sensation, like she could easily just be pluck up by the whims of the winds, oor the gods.

She stands near the front of the ship, leaning against the railing. To and observer it looks like she is watching the waves for danger, but in truth the warrior is lost in her own thoughts.

....AND THEEEERE ARE GREAT RENTS IN IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!

Oh, Sinon. Being beat up by the Trojans who accepted the horse did nothing to dampen his spirits, it seems. He leans over Kouru's shoulder, cheeks pink, and grins.

I got a gorgeous girl waitin' back home. Weren't married yet when we left, but it'll be worth it. He holds up his wrist and shows off a ridiculously worn and tattered braided bracelet of colored cloth. A poor gift, but honest. I bet yer kids'll love to hear about all this.

Chryseis thanks Iantha yet again for helping her find her new gear. I was thinking, there's a whole generation of boys who haven't been tested in battle yet over in Sparta. If they were willing to take orders from a couple women, this hydra fight might be an interesting way to test their mettle, and a good peacetime gesture.

Mikros and Kallon, two of Nikias' men from the group who tended the twins in the temple, stomp onto the deck with clear frustration.

Captain, the shorter Mikros begins. Respectfully. That girl will not shut up. She's convinced there'll be a shipwreck or something. It's really getting to the folks below deck. And look! He gestures broadly to the deep evening sky.

"It's easy to be happy when the winds are fair and the mood is bright" came the old proverb, and indeed it was. A weathered hand would reach into the plain cloth pouch at his waist, pulling out the little statuette: made of pure white stone it was striated across the throat with a particular vein the colour of dried blood. Chapped lips would kiss the statue, muttering "𐤄‎𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤃𐤀𐤅𐤍‎‎‎‎‎‎‎𐤐" before he'd toss it into the sea, just at the peak of a particular high wave before turning to Sinon "She is lucky, and so are you. I hope to have a bride waiting for me when I get home. Ther-" And there was trouble with his prisoners.

Of course there was, there always was. Unbidden, an old memory of another girl, fresh as the day it was made, flashed into his mind. He'd absently give his shipmate a gentle thump in the chest before reaching into his purse and muttering "𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤂𐤄𐤍𐤄𐤉𐤀‎‎‎‎‎‎ 𐤕𐤇𐤍‎‎ 𐤂𐤀" and tossing two gold coins likewise into the surf. It still didn't sit right with him, and likely never would. Sliding down the mast he'd gingerly walk up to Nikkas - couldn't be too careful those first days getting the sea legs back - and salute. Nothing quite so like the gods on the ground like a captain in command of his ship "Something you need me to tend to, sir?"
OOC:
For the curious, marble often has veins of iron oxide running through it. The horse is an offering to Posiden, the coins are "For Iphigenia"

"Hmm," Nikias ponders, frowning. "Let us go together. I would hear of these portents myself, lest I fall prey to folly." He looks to the men who had approached. "Do not fear, Mikros, Kallon. We are good, righteous men. Surely the Gods will know our deeds are such." He claps the taller of the men on the shoulder as he passes and goes to seek out the prince and princess below decks.

OOC:
As with Nikias and the trip outside the walls, if Iantha wants to join the fellows, just hop on in.
Below deck the other two men guarding the twins step out of the way. Cassandra sits gripping her cloak tight around her body, sweating and exhausted.

Raging stormclouds...Scattered shields...Death on the rocks...

Helenus appears to be sleeping, but speaks up.

She gets like this. I tried telling your men they'd just have to get used to it.
Apr 24, 2023 5:54 pm
'You think we need of some boys to fight a beast?' Iantha tone is light-hearted as she keeps watching the ocean. 'May be an idea. Wouldn't be a bad thing for Sparta to be aware of our skills.'
Apr 24, 2023 6:49 pm
That's more what I was thinking, Chryseis chuckles.
Apr 26, 2023 9:58 pm
Ducking his head to avoid a low crossbar caused a loud pop and a twinge of pain to crack from somewhere in his lower back "... I can't wait to be home on dry, Spartan ground again. I miss the smell of the orchards and the vineyards" was his only response to that particular and public indignity. Glancing at the two guards he'd sigh, clapping the lightly on the shoulders and dismissing them "They're my prisoners, I'll take the rest of your watch. Get above decks and keep your eyes out for rocks and storm clouds..." remembering himself with a jolt he'd look to Nikias "With your permission, of course". He'd take in the scene quickly and turn to Helenus "Is she afflicted by one of the gods, or sick, or something else?"
Apr 27, 2023 3:01 am
Oh, hey, Fledgling, you're back.

Helenus shoots up with the bravado of a campfire storyteller.

These tragic children of defeated Troy were born twins under a prophetic star. And indeed, from tender youth, were blessed with Foresight. He drapes his arm over his forehead. Yet such gifts come at a cost, and plagued, as well, were the children, with such suffering as you see here. He gestures broadly to his sister, then reaches for the sky. On the eve of adolescence, Lord Apollo in a flash of radiant light presented himself to the twins with a proposal. If they would serve in his court for the duration of his lessons, he would teach them to alleviate their symptoms. He continues with a certain self-aware melodrama, part proud, part trying to distract Cassandra, probably part mocking the Greek observers. This servant accepted such great honor, but the fair maiden, in devotion to Pallas Athena, refused, and thus continues to suffer as in her youth. Nay! Perhaps more. He bows with a flourish, and whispers an aside as he rises.

I think I got the better cut of the deal, if you ask me. Lord Apollo was not thrilled that Cass refused. Her visions have been nonsensical ever since.

Nikias nods to affirm the men to go above-deck and watch for hazards while he stands and listens to Helenus go on. "That seemed practiced, lad. I assume you've said that very thing to a great many that have visited the temple. Yet, how much of that is true? How long since you were plagued such as your sister?"

Helenus rolls his eyes and flops back to a sitting position, grumbling. No flair for the dramatic.

Six or seven years. It's Cassandra who answers, some color returning to her face. I saw him too. Helenus was in a trance for a few days. But you don't have any reason to believe us. She sighs and leans back against the wall of the ship. She'll spare your lives for the mercy you've shown if you're careful. But she won't spare the ship.

Her words are tired as if she knows they'll fall on deaf ears. Yet... the impulse of Ajax. The carelessness of the soldiers. The cracked Palladium. It doesn't take a genius to see why Athena would be angry.
OOC:
Congratulations, Nikias, you can believe Cassandra as you wish, despite her canonical curse.

OOC:
Cool! I think that fits well for his character.
"I...I believe you," Nikias says upon weighing her countenance and voice. "So the ship is doomed," Nikias says with a frown. "What are we to do, then? Just sit here, awaiting our punishment? If you see such a fate, you must see a way to avoid it. What if-" he sighs, "-what if we were to rid ourselves of the goods from the temple?" He frowns at the idea, wouldn't Athena be equally angry for further sacrilage? Nikias does not care for this feeling of being an insect, pinned to the floor by a boot.

'Sound like a plan then. Koru may be an able to direct us to the right sort of lads.' She turns to look away from the ocean as she speaks, spying said Scout disappearing below deck after Nikias.

'Looks like something interesting may be happening. Or they had just gone below deck to talk. She was cautious of barging in on soldiers business. Enough of them were uncertain enough fighting beside woman in the first place, she found it easier to not agitate them. Though she doubted Nikias would mind, his men might.

All right, Iantha, add a plain wisdom roll when you can. I'll add the result when it makes sense. Kouru also believes Cassandra.
