Chapter 2: Stormy Seas

Iantha's cry rallies the startled crew and gives Chryseis a chance to position herself better, flanking a tentacle with her Amazonian sister. Nikias leaps into the fray and cleaves the tentacle from the beast with a mighty swing, dropping the would-be snack to the ground! The beast burbles in rage, but then Kouru's voice bellows over the storm. The creature pauses, anger still in its eyes, but somewhat confused by the challenge - a perfect opportunity to react.

Iantha gives a nod to Chryseis as her fellow warrior moves into position, watches the creature carefully looking for a weak spot. As Kourou yells at the beast distracted it she surges forward, jabbing with her spear.

Nikias helps his man to his feet, readies his shield, then strikes at the creature again, seeking the softest and most vulnerable area of its body he can!

Nikias's roll to confirm....
You can choose x2 of that damage roll or to roll damage a second time.

Edit: Eyyyyyy, that confirms! I'll post results tomorrow. Gotta wait for Kouru anyway.

Nikias Spyros: +1 Longsword - Atk - (1d20+9)

(18) + 9 = 27

Well... yelling at the fish didn't work" came that inner monologue once again. He had neither bow nor spear, having been aloft, and they had plenty of wind... so he'd adjust tack and work to run the ship aground on that island. Perhaps it would scrape off the monster as well.

OOC:
I mean, yelling at the fish *helped*...
Iantha's attack strikes true and the creature screeches in pain! Slick black blood sprays on the deck, mixing with the pounding rain. That doesn't hold Nikias back. His blade finds its mark and the defeated beast peels off the ship like a wet garland.

The men aboard cheer, but are interrupted by the bucking of the ship. A massive surge threatens to swallow you into a wine-dark grave. New shapes form in the waters, and for a moment it's easy to fear an even bigger monster has arrived. Kouru can identify them first from his vantage point, and the others can soon after.

Dolphins!

Dozens of the beautiful sleek creatures issue from the waves, larger than you expected, and glistening with unseen moonlight. They surround the ship like bees around an apple tree, unfazed by the anger of the sea. You realize they're guiding the ship to safe harbor. In far less time than you could have managed on your own, you make port in a little cove on the island. The dolphins chatter and disappear back into the darkness, and you are safe for the night.

"Great. The gods themselves have noticed us. I just wanted to go home..." Ah well, nothing for it. As the ship made it safely into harbour he'd trim, then store the sails and spar, stopping to pour out fully half of his wineskin into the now gentle waters in gratitude. Thankfully the rest of the crew were well trained, so after his own work was done he'd wave down his companions as he headed below "Sir" he'd address Nikias "I suggest we find out whether Athena is sore with the entire crew, with the ship itself, or with just a few of us. Perhaps we can send the ship with half a crew back home and the rest can find another way back"

"Mmm, perhaps. I think it prudent to first look over the ship, repair any damage. I can have the crew do that while we take a look at where we've landed. I loathe to split my men, but it may yet be best."

I will bump you guys to a new thread and the next morning when you're ready, but you have a chance to chat if you want it. Just let me know.

As the creature slips off the boat the Amazon let's out a yell of victory. For the first time in a long time there is a look of joy on her face. This was what she was meant to do.

---

'If the crew is split you want to be sure everyone she is angry with is in the same group, if that is why this happened . Or she's still upset at both and there are less people to fight off whatever is thrown at them'

Kouru nods as he files back up from below, carrying his equipment in a bag slung over his shoulder, the Trojan priests in tow "Aye, Beloved of the Lady, we'll have to sort it out. Fortunately, we have these two to help sort it out" looking over his shoulder he'd frown, then look at his companions and shrug "It might not be the best option, but it's not like we have an oracle of our own to cast the lots"

Helenus squirms oddly and then busts out laughing.

"He's right," Nikias says looking to Cassandra particularly. "I believe now ever more in your visions. What say you? Do you have guidance in this matter? Would good Athena spare us the full might of her wrath if we were to leave the ship? Or will it follow us regardless?"
May 19, 2023 2:57 pm
Foresight isn't a constant communication, Helenus pipes up. And Cassandra's are even more fickle. He puts a hand on her shoulder. Are you sure you're all right? She nods with a lucidity that she didn't have back in the temple.

Helenus continues. If you can get me some small game for a sacrifice, I can see what I can discern. My sister should rest. As you saw, there was no "death on the rocks" among us. A major point to miss, don't you think?

Helenus, I'm fine. Cassandra speaks softly but firmly, then looks to their captors. I'm not scared anymore. I think it means she's not mad at you and your men. So you're as safe as you can be off course at sea.

No change in her eyes means it's an educated guess, not a vision, but she seems confident.

Nikias's expression softens. "Of course, I can't presume to understand how these things work. I'll take this as is, then - perhaps our punishment is meted. Now to see about getting safely home. I'll what I can find for a sacrifice."

Nikias sets to ordering his men to evaluate any damage to the ship, particularly its hull, to make sure The Andromeda is yet sea-worthy.

Afterwards, he checks with the others in the group, "What say we find the boy a rabbit? Might be we find more and have some proper food before we set out again while also getting a lay of the land."
OOC:
Can the ship be named? Would it be named? If so, would contemporary Greeks have even considered naming a ship after a figure from their own myths? I don't know the answer to these questions, but I like the name :D
