Chapter 3: Oizys

May 20, 2023 2:43 am
With the brunt of Athena's wrath apparently at bay for now, the men of The Andromeda begin making minor repairs. Luckily, the dolphins guided you past many of the dangerous rock formations around the island, and the beast you encountered only damaged part of the port side of the ship. The sea still boils in the distance, though it appears to be calming down. You're safe for the night, and can set out to explore the island come morning.
OOC:
Kouru
Cassandra tends a fire by the shore line while Helenus arranges the rabbit's entrails for discernment. Do you want to go watch? she asks. It'd be good to learn eventually.
OOC:
Iantha
On deck you have more of a chance to examine the beast - well, the severed parts of it, at any rate. One of the hooks from its wicked tentacle would make a pleasant battle token, and the inky blood is interesting as well. The man who was grabbed by the creature staggers on deck, bandaged well but still weak from the ordeal.

Hey, he mutters, glancing around to make sure nobody's watching. Don't tell the others I'm worried, but you seem to know a lot about....things like this. Was that thing poisonous?
OOC:
If you wish to investigate the creature, roll an appropriate check. I'll leave it up to your interpretation.

Nikias
As things settle down for the night, Sinon (now definitely sober after the monster's attack) finds you during a scouting round with some of the other men. Sir, there are bodies on the shore. Do you want us to investigate them now, or in the morning?
May 20, 2023 9:42 pm
Iantha pulls out a dagger to careful take off a hook as she looks over the rest of the parts. Nikias had mentioned food earlier, but she doubted many of the men could be convinced to eat the creature.
OOC:

"Now," Nikias replies, "though do not go far from camp at this time. Report back with anything you you learn. If you cannot ascertain how they died, bring one of the bodies to the edge of camp and come find me."
May 21, 2023 1:50 pm
She looks up to the soldier, before her eyes drop to his wound. ' I know a lot of monsters yes. You should be fine. The Trojan sea monster, or similar at least. It it had bitten you it would be a different story.'

She stands and claps him on the shoulders. 'You should share the story or how you survived such a beast. It should get you glory at home. Just... don't push your wounds for a while.'
May 22, 2023 9:39 pm
A surprised look would make it's way across his face as the invitation snaps him out of... "Best not to think on it. My grandfather says those kinds of thoughts will pass with time" at least this time the voice in his head was his own. He'd bring an armful of wood to the fire and then stretch, his back letting out several Staccato cracks and pops "You know, I have... or perhaps had, now... an aunt who would auger by the flight of birds. I've always wondered how it was done" squatting down next to the priest he'd watch with interest, then query "Is it only wild animals, or can you use, say, sheep? Or that giant squ- OY! suddenly he'd stand bolt upright and wave to Iantha "You want me to cook that?"
May 22, 2023 11:35 pm
While the sea monster fled before you could take its entrails, there's no use passing up good.... or at least viable.... food. Helenus makes space for you at the fire while Iantha finishes up.

I was hoping you'd come, fledgling. You must have a lot on your mind so far. Simpler questions, or less important questions, can use small sacrifices. The more complicated and important, the more valuable the sacrifice must be. Bulls in their prime are usually saved for the sorts of foresight that could change the course of war, for instance.

He takes some of the ash from the edge of the fire and sprinkles it over the entrails with a flourish. Now, Cassandra is Athena's servant, so she'd be better suited for this, but she needs her rest, and the question "Is Lady Athena still pissed off at us" has a fairly clear answer.

He glances at you briefly as he finishes arranging the space. Your first time is always difficult. But eventually you'll learn nuances that you and your god share regardless of the sacrifice.

He smirks. And of course, they can always throw something in your face unprompted.
The soldier with Iantha lets out a relieved laugh. Certainly. I'd hate to be gone from home all this time just to get finished off by a fish! I'm Antiochos. And I must say I'm glad you're on our side.

Just then, Sinon comes running back with Mikros and Kallon.

Captain! Captain! They're Greek soldiers! We found four, asked the others to bring them to camp. I don't know if we'll find more come morning. It's too dark to tell if they're Ithacan or not. But they were recently drowned. Surely in the storm.
May 25, 2023 7:08 am
Nikias takes a breath, thinking. "Keep them to the outskirts of camp. We'll have someone take a closer look at them in the morning. You men get some food, we'll need our strength in the morning."
May 25, 2023 10:01 am
'Well it's a little more than a fish, but I get the sentiment.' She smiles. 'Iantha. Well Antichos, while we're travelling back if you want I can show you a few techniques. Show of when you're back home? *

As Kourou calls over she's gives a wave back. ' If the soldiers will eat it. It is safe. Just give a prayer to Artemis first. '

Looking from the priest to the fire he'd squat down, groaning slightly at the unexpected pain in his lower back "Why do you keep calling me that? I'm no bird. Nor am I a priest. I don't know the first thing about-" hearing the Amazon's reply he'd wave and call back "Aye, the Huntress! Makes sense!" before pausing to think: "I wonder if any of the ships has a kettle big enough to fry in?" Glancing up at the news of dead men he'd move to rise, only to see that Nikias had it well in hand "Who, the gods? I see that your sister seems to suffer whenever the gods take her, is that what you mean?"

Helenus nods. I was the same before Lord Apollo instructed me. She has become worse since she denied him. But even less exceptional seers report symptoms like a concussion.

Part of you expects snark for ignoring his earlier theatrics below deck, but there is none.

A fledgling does not understand, at first, that being pushed from the nest is a learning experience. He looks at you across the entrails, suddenly serious. You saw Astyanax. Our infant nephew. His smile catches the firelight with eerie shadows. And you couldn't find his body, right? No concussion showed you that.
OOC:
Nikias and Iantha
While certainly it is a tragedy for these brave men to fall so close to home, you are relieved to see that none of them were part of your king's fleet. Sinon and the others discuss where to find wood for a pyre, and a good location separate from cooking. You have a somber sense of calm that whoever incurred your lady's wrath has paid their due.

Antiochus, insisting on feeling helpful, uses his uninjured arm to poke and prod at the cooking fire. Iantha, you're able to let him and a few of the soldiers know what "done" looks like on a beast like this. The men aren't necessarily thrilled with the intense briny flavor, but they're practical enough to appreciate not tapping into their food stores tonight.

While the ordeals of the day hampered the men's enthusiasm for going home, they do make camp and relax some, confident they're safe. Then you both hear an unsettling sound, like a child singing.
May 29, 2023 6:35 pm
Nikias sits with Iantha and Chryseis, eating, when he hears the odd, childlike crying. "Do you hear that?" he asks, perking up. "What sort of creature is that? Surely no children are on this island so close we could hear them?"
OOC:
Is it night now?
May 29, 2023 7:33 pm
Iantha's had drop to the spear at her side. 'We did not search the whole island, perhaps people make a home here.' [/b] Despite an attempt to reason it away she is clearly unsettled.
May 30, 2023 12:16 am
OOC:
It is night.
The voice isn't in distress, per se, but it's definitely humanoid.
May 30, 2023 12:11 pm
"... there were feathers... and cliffs, and-" the scout... and perhaps something different now, would tear his gaze from the flames to meet that of the other man "but how? I'm not from a great line, or a general, or any great hero. This war was probably the only thing that my line will remember me for... was it saving the temples from sacking?" That eternal question which plagued great men and the most abject victims alike... "Why me?"
May 30, 2023 12:28 pm
You'll need to figure that out on your own, Helenus replies. Perhaps you're right. Or maybe someone noticed you years ago and waited for the war to end to reach out.

About this time you also hear the childlike singing, and notice Nikias and Iantha's inquisitive response. Helenus raises his eyebrows. Hoo boy...

At the fire, Chryseis turns to the others.

Should we go look? It's late but our health is all right.

A few of the soldiers take note with concern, but most chalk it up to an odd bird or hound, are deep in conversation, or have returned to the ship to sleep on deck.
May 30, 2023 1:49 pm
'Yes, a couple of us at least should investigate. We should ask Kouru, he's a scout.' It may be nothing, but her mind keeps think back to the horse and Helens tricks. She didn't want to get caught unawares again.
May 30, 2023 6:45 pm
Nikias nods. "We should make at least a reasonably close sweep of the camp proximity, see if we can pinpoint where the sound is coming from and make sure it is no immediate threat. I have heard tales of animals whose cry mimics the sound of weeping women, this could be something similar. I'll check with Kouru."

Nikias stands and gathers up his arms. He seeks out Kouru and explains their intent to investigate. "Honorable Kouru, might you aid us with your tracking skills and keen sight?"
May 31, 2023 2:48 pm
"His voice changed? Wait, no..." glancing one last time at the rabbit the scout would rise, closing his eyes against the firelight to refresh them as he waved to his companions "Aye, of course. Have the lads form up around the ships and keep quiet. I'll see what I can find" stepping out from the fire's light he'd crouch low, pulling his bow from it's sheath and listening attentively to the wind "... creepy children. Nothing good has ever once come from creepy children"

It doesn't take long to find the source of the voice, and with a subtle hand gesture you're able to show the others where it's coming from.

Behind some of the rocks delineating the beach from the shore is a little girl, perhaps about seven or eight, playing with a raggedy doll of dark cloth. In a brief glint from the fires at camp, you can see it looks like she's been crying, but she sings her song quite contentedly. She appears to be alone and unharmed, and has yet to notice any of you.
Jun 6, 2023 1:36 am
"Small one," Nikias says cautiously, still standing far enough back to draw his weapon should the need arise, "where are your parents?"
Jun 6, 2023 2:46 am
Oh, Hi, Mister Spyros! she calls cheerily. Mama's picking me up in the morning. She said I did a really good job.
Jun 6, 2023 3:14 am
"Oh? And what job was that?"
Jun 6, 2023 12:36 pm
She sits up straight and proud. Well, every dusk I go swimming, then at night I visit everyone I can around the walled city. And at dawn I go swimming again. This is a really nice place to nap and play. The villagers won't let me play with them anymore, but that's okay. I'm used to it.
Jun 6, 2023 1:33 pm
"... well, that's not good. Returning his arrow and bow to their appropriate sheaths he'd pull a bit of ship's bread and some dried fish from a pouch at his waist, slowly and very calmly walking up behind the captain. Hands would extend to the child to offer the food as he approaches, a slightly forced smile alighting the scout's lips as he briefly passes behind his captain, murmuring "Sir, she knows your name" before passing behind his fellow greek on the other side to offer the child some food "It is a fine thing to play, and there is nothing like a good nap. Here, little one, have something to eat while we wait for... what was your mother's name again?"
Jun 6, 2023 1:59 pm
She accepts the food and smiles. Thank you, Mr. Areiu! After taking a mouthful of bread she chuckles playfully. You can call her Astæroómmatos. You might get to meet her if we play together!

Ah, it's over there a ways. The girl gestures broadly toward the east. Don't you remember, Miss Iantha? I visited all of you. Though I guess you were asleep.

In the distance you hear faint clamoring, and can see just the edge of the orange glow of torches. Not surprising, but it's from inland, not your camp. The little girl perks up.

Oh, yay! They're coming to play with me, too!
Jun 6, 2023 9:43 pm
"Who are they, girl? Enough riddles. I know not who you are, but I recognize you as a daughter of Olympus, for such you must be! What is it you are doing here, this eve?"
Jun 6, 2023 10:03 pm
Hearing his name would bring pause, though even through the armour his companions would be able to see his shoulders relax as the little girl takes the mouthful of bread. Stepping out of his shoes the scout would kneel down eye level to the little girl, right hand moving to his quiver to brush lightly over the nocks as he addresses her... carefully avoiding eye contact, but not avoiding looking her in the face. His internal monologue was a jumble of profanity, but his voice was only slightly stiff as he spoke "We are honoured that you have deigned to accept our bread. Perhaps we could offer you the further hospitality of our camp? We have a warm fire, and I'm sure we could find you somewhere comfortable to rest..."

"Ah, there it is" As he spoke his fingers would close around the papery feathers of an arrow, drawing it out to present it with both hands: it was barely visible in the moonlight, the shaft a matte black of squid ink mixed with campfire ash, the point a steep pyramid of razor sharp bronze and the fletching a carefully bound feather dropped over the battlefield by an Imperial Eagle, the dark brown appearing molted against the black lacing pattern "...while you wait for your esteemed mother. Please, a gift for you in her stead"
Jun 8, 2023 7:43 am
Nikias watches the display with apt curiosity. "Kouru, do you know who this child-like goddess is, or her mother she has mentioned?"

He kneels and looks to the girl. "Are my men in danger here, bright one? Or is there something needed of us so that we may expect good fortune? Who are those who come to play with you?"
Jun 8, 2023 12:09 pm
She turns the arrow in her hands. My name is Oizys.

Misery.

I've visited your men enough, so you don't need to worry.
She glances up at the Amazonian. Sorry about your queen, Miss Iantha. It wasn't my fault, but I did have to tell you.

She pierces the doll's hand with the arrow and her posture changes. Now the doll takes on the appearance of a little girl holding a small toy arrow. As for Oizys, she wears a black dress. She looks like a child, but her bearing is too old. She looks like a young woman, but her features are too round.

The villagers want to sacrifice me in the morning. But that's not how any of this works. Mama is older than Olympus, after all. She gives a wry smile, eyes dark as ink, with black tears trailing down her face. She made me promise never to use her name with mortals. But she's all around us. and she looks up fondly to the night sky.
Jun 8, 2023 8:54 pm
"Misery. Oizys. Then these villagers, are we meant instead to be tools, by which your message is to be delivered to these poor fools?"
Jun 9, 2023 12:02 am
I already told you, Mister Spyros. I just come here to nap and play. There's been plenty of work to do in Troy. And when Mama comes I'll take my leave.
Jun 9, 2023 3:10 am
Nikias nods slowly. "Perhaps, with your gift friend Kouru, Iantha, we should take our leave. If we need not be here when these men arrive, then we should be at camp."
Jun 9, 2023 5:21 pm
At the mention of a sacrifice a slow resolve would visibly take Kouru: his shoulders would tense, his back would straighten, and Nikias would recognize an almost manic fire in his old companion's eye "Blasphemy."

Pulling his bow from its sheath the scout would move to stand on a small dune between the "child" and the distant village "Brother, you should bring the men. We can not allow this outrage to stand, especially when The Starry Lady watched over us this entire war." It was yet dark, but his eyes would already be scanning the distance "Sister, will you aid me in preventing and punishing this obscenity?"
Jun 10, 2023 4:34 am
Nikias sees the look in Kouru's face and a stifles his gut reaction to dispute this course of action. Yet there he sees something - resolve? clarity? He knows the man believes this to be the right thing to do. So instead, he simply nods.
OOC:
Based on distance and layout, could Nikias reasonably gather the men and make it back here in time? Or is this us vs them
Jun 12, 2023 5:57 pm
It is clear on Iantha's face that she is struggling to follow some of the conversation, with Kouru suddenly seeing import in the girl. At the mention of her queen however she stiffens, and her eyes begin to narrow. Even as he child claims no fault her look remains wary.

'The ones coming are foolish. I would stay, even if only to convince them they should not mess with someone claiming a mother in the sky. ' She studies the child with curiosity. '.. besides a sacrifice should be caught in a worthy hunt or challenge, and not a child. Get your men, I can try and bide time.'
Jun 12, 2023 10:35 pm
Iantha's offer allows the others to gather the men.
OOC:
We'll let Iantha's side play out a tad, then I'll bring the guys back in. You can, by default, bring Sinon, Mikros, and Kallon. If you have other plans let me know.
When the others are gone, about a dozen men from the village crest the hill. They're armed with farming tools and torches. Maybe a few of them have hunting knives. Several of the older men bombard you with questions.

Get away from her!

Are you her mother?

Who are you?

She's not what she looks like!

You notice that Oizys has shed her truer form and appears again as a little girl.
Jun 15, 2023 8:25 pm
The warriors takes a stance between the mob and the girl. Her spear is not yet point at them, but she is clearly ready to defend if needed.

'I am not her mother. I am mortal like you. One who realises what you are about to do is a very bad idea. I understand she is not as she seems, but think about it. The trouble she seems to sow.. what do you think her mother will be capable of if you harm her daughter?.'
Jun 15, 2023 9:50 pm
At this a few of the men hold. You make a valid point. But the one in front narrows his eyes.

Not every cursed child is born of the gods. But this one is cursed. Ten years ago this child washed up on our shores. Since then we've been reeling from a lack of trade with Troy, and the mud of war in the waters. And she hasn't aged a day. I don't know what more of an omen you want, but when she's gone, our misery will pass.
Jun 15, 2023 11:14 pm
Nikias laughs, "It is not likely that misery will pass good men! For we have come from the war with Troy and are elated to report that war is over, with Greece as victors. Troy is no more, and thus trade with them will no longer be an option. It would be recommended you look north for your trade. Many fine Ithacan pelts and other goods can be found there."
Jun 15, 2023 11:31 pm
As the small contingency of men returns, the villagers tense.

While we're glad to hear the war is over, we still need to deal with this. The leader gestures to Oizys. Now, will you assist us or let us do this ourselves? We don't have much to offer tired soldiers except a quiet beach, and we pray you worked out your spoils in Troy.
Jun 16, 2023 6:44 am
'So instead of helping your trade partners you one to the conclusion to sacrifice a child?

' Oizys, you said your mother was coining to get you? When? If it is soon then these men have no reason to harm you. '
Jun 16, 2023 12:19 pm
At dawn, the girl replies, when she's done with work.

The leader scoffs. So she's a camp follower?

Oizys ignores him. Mama said I could call her sooner if I needed her, but she warned me it would really scare the mortals.
Jun 16, 2023 12:33 pm
'There. She will be gon soon and you don't need to risk repurcussions you don't want.' She looks eyes with the leader. 'Trust me, you do not what that for your people. Those not even responsible will get caught up. There's a reason we are here, and ut was the cause of another. Do you want other blood and misery or your hands?
Jun 16, 2023 2:09 pm
The leader can tell the others are losing confidence. He shifts in his place.

We can't make your army leave. But if the girl is here after dawn tomorrow, I will have to insist you hand her over to us.

Knowing it's a weak bargain, he gestures to the villagers and they leave. Oizys nods.

It's probably better this way. I would have been fine, but thank you for the help.

With the villagers subdued for now, you can head back to camp for some much-needed rest. Oizys takes you up on your earlier offer for a place to spend the night, and goes to sleep fairly quickly. A few of the men are confused, but are quickly satisfied by a half-lie that you're escorting her home when it's light. You take a short time to finish food, tend to evening pieties, and prepare for sleep.

Sleep comes for you suddenly and with force. You know you're asleep, and can only see yourself in gray light, otherwise surrounded by pitch darkness. You can hear the breathing of the other two in your small cohort, but the sound of your own body is amplified.

WHAT SWEET NAIVE LITTLE MORTALS.

The voice simultaneously stirs memories of your mother's lullabys, and your first truly frightened night alone. Dread and rest twist like wild vines in your heart. Two piercing stars blink to light before you, though your field of vision doesn't change. The feminine voice speaks again, not at all hostile, but undeniably dangerous.

MY LITTLE OIZYS WOULD HAVE BEEN FINE ON HER OWN. BUT YOU CHARMING SOULS STILL TRIED TO HELP HER. IT'S SUCH AN ADORABLE FEATURE OF YOUR KIND. SHE QUITE LIKES YOUR GIFT, AND INSISTED I RETURN THE FAVOR.

Three baubles appear in your line of sight.

A wristlet of 15 dark gray stones
A small gray marble carved to look like an eye

PLEASE ACCEPT THESE WITH MY COMPLIMENTS.

Kouru and Nikias are Shaken, and Iantha is Scared. I like the more gradual progression provided here. That's what the will saves were for.

You all had interesting responses to Oizys, so to make choosing items neutral, I had you roll initiative. Each of these items is a magic item worth 750gp. While different, I think you'd find any one of them useful. Nikias gets first pick, then Kouru, then Iantha. Coincidentally, it means the most flustered person gets the remaining item, so it worked out all right.

I will post what the items are, and any RP responses, in a batch once y'all have your things.
Jun 22, 2023 7:58 am
Nikias is speechless at first, turning his spectral head around in an attempt to make sense of where the voice is coming from. The oppressive words push upon his will, but he finally musters a weak, "Thank you." He steps forward, like stepping through tar, and takes for himself the wristlet of dark gray stones. He draws them close to his chest and closes his eyes, hoping to wake from this dream.
Jun 23, 2023 4:26 pm
It was never easy rolling out of one's cot flat onto one's face, but somehow Kouru managed it: feet tangled in his blanket he'd lay there stretched out, absolutely not making eye contact with one of the Old Gods. He'd stay put, face in the sand, until he was absolutely positive that the goddess had gone, and only then would he peek up and peer about "I think I wet my loincloth" was his only thought as he reaches up, fingers grasping the single eyeball floating disembodied in the air before him.

She's frozen. She knows how to fight creatures. Excels at it. She's a warrior. But the presence , the fear.. how does she fight something she can't see, can't identify? Iantha's eyes darts around as she looks for something, a weak spot, a way to fight. Her mind running through all the possibilities in panic, so much that the words don't break through at first. By the time they've sunk in , and the warriors able to get a clear grip on what is actually happening rather than an attack the others have grasped too of the others.

She reaches a hand out hesitant. A trap? Choosing ones own doom. A presence this powerful and strong, why would it give gifts?

Yet to turn down the gift of a powerful creature...that would be equally dangerous and she takes the black stones.
..Thank you.'

For Iantha: Crush a bead and run the powder through your hair, and you need not fear dropping your guard.

For Kouru: Crush the eye, whisper your question to the night air, and I will answer.

You wake, fear subsided, though the memory lingers like a strange dream. Around you, the soldiers are both packing the boat and preparing to bury the soldiers who washed up on shore. It seems the rest of the tentacle was distributed for breakfast. Oizys is gone.

I hope everything went all right, Sinon says when he sees you're awake. We woke up to see you all sleeping and assumed you took the little girl back home before dawn.

"Well, at least it's easy to wash" was his thought as he waded out in to the... bracing... surf, eyeing the strange bracelet which seems at the same time remarkably suited to him "Aye" comes his ready response "her honorable mother came to pick her up, and everything seems to be as it should." Well, it was true at least. Coming back to shore he'd approach his two captives, holding out the bracelet before the pair of oracles "What do you make of this?"

Helenus looks first. Weirdly heavy. Nice carving.

Cassandra follows up. I don't know if it makes sense, but it feels realer than other bracelets I've had.

Helenus also confirms that Athena's wrath was not aimed at this ship, and that the dolphins were a gesture of good faith from Amphitrite.

"Home, yes," Nikias says.

He quietly prepares himself for disembarkment after confirming the young girl, as she so seemed, was now gone. He knew there was more to her, and so did not search for the girl.

He sees Kouru approaching the twins and joins, listening. Recalling his dream, he looks down and sees upon his arm also a bracelet - the same from his dream. "How strange," he says, "it seems we have been given gifts of a divine nature. We should treasure them closely."

Iantha studies her own bracelet. Nyx. To get a gift from such a being. She could only hope Artemis would not be offended. Perhaps she should perform an hi nt and catch an offering for the huntress before they left.

'Hopefully the others are calmed now Oizys is gone, but we should watch out while we ready to depart.'

OOC:
Is there anything in particular you wanted to address with each other, the burials, or preparing to disembark? I'll narrate past the pieces you're good with.

That said, everyone please drop a "Survival," "Profession: Sailor," or general intelligence check to make sure you head off in the right direction. I do need all 3 of you because on the off chance nobody succeeds, or there's a crit fail, the rolls will impact how far off course you get.

"I will help bury those that washed upon the shore. They should be looked after in preparation for their departure to the afterlife. I would bring Helenus and Cassandra with me, as they can give more proper blessings upon the dead than I." Nikias heads to join the soldiers selected for the task of burying the dead. "Keep your weapons at-hand in case the locals feel inclined to make trouble for us."
OOC:
We don't have to play it out in detail and you are free to narrate the burial, but I see Nikias as doing this while we await disembarkment. Adding the requested rolls below.

Rolls

Survival - (1d20+8)

(5) + 8 = 13

Jul 5, 2023 2:05 am
"A wise and honorable notion" he'd agree, rising up from between the two priests "I'll take a quick wander up the shore, see if we've lost anyone - or anything - else to the waves. Who knows, there could be entire ships beached" With that the scout would take off at a light jog, leaving shield, spear, and armour packed on the ship where they'd been stowed the night before.

Rolls

Survival for the boat - (1d20+5)

(11) + 5 = 16

'I'll watch out for the locals while you all work.. Hopefully they will just let us be on our way.'

Rolls

Survival - (D20-1)

(6) - 1 = 5

The men gather appropriate coinage for the deceased Greeks's eyes, and help arrange them for burial. While they work, others dig a grave in one of the hills on the bluff, and Sinon does his best to paint a grave marker on the nearby stone - an image of four men flanked by flame (supposedly of Troy) and the waves that caused their end. Mikros and Kallon find some wine for a decent libation, allowing Nikias to make the offering.

Iantha notices some of the villagers regarding the soldiers at a distance with confusion and caution, but nobody makes a threatening move. Kouru finds rubble on the beach, certainly pieces of various wrecks, but nothing more distinct than the men discovered last night. As they scout, they can hear Cassandra's voice pick up near the shoreline.

Lady Athena Areia, we know not whether these men angered you or were caught in the path of your wrath, but they were soldiers. Even the most base know to follow orders. Thus direct them on one last time, so they may reach the Dread Gates. Take mercy on us lowly ones, who bury them trusting the Lord of the Dead will judge them rightly.

Oh He who Welcomes Many Guests, accept our meager offerings on behalf of these souls. May they rest in the land most suitable, their names surviving as warnings or hope.

It's a simple burial, but resources and time are fairly short. A few men sing while others close the tomb. Your crew is confident they know which direction to disembark. The question now is whether you wish to make an offering to ensure safe travels - and if so, of what, and to whom?
Jul 15, 2023 8:26 pm
Nikias joins in the singing while they pay their respects to the dead then helps prepare for their continued voyage. Nikias spots the villagers at a distance and holds his hands aloft, approaching in a manner that suggests he wishes them no ill will. "Ho there! Might you be willing a trade, before we leave your shores?"
Jul 23, 2023 9:32 pm
The leader from the night before raises a wary eyebrow.

Well, the girl is gone. I'm not sure how you did it, but that was what we asked. And it'd be poor hospitality to deny you. What are you looking for?
Jul 24, 2023 12:49 am
"Some goats, if you have some to spare. Maybe some other food, for the men, upon our voyage. Enough for a week at sea. How much would you ask?"
Jul 24, 2023 1:18 am
The man takes note and returns to the village to check. He's gone a bit longer than you'd have expected - long enough that if they're curious, Iantha and Kouru can catch up with you. When he returns, he has a goat and two younger men with him.

It's been a while. Troy traded with us for some time, but we guessed you put them under seige. Soon enough it wasn't safe to venture out, but there's some soreness here because of how the war impacted our waters, how they didn't give us good information soon enough, and we lost some good men. And our village's oldest woman recieved several dreams that the war was their fault. So frankly, screw them. I am Andros, and these are my sons Giorgios and Dimitrios. My wife and some other women are gathering what food we can spare. I hope you like dried fish. He smirks at his own joke (or what he seems to think is a joke) and scratches the back of his neck.

I asked around. There's a rumor you killed that beast in the waters. If you did, we'll take as many of its hooks as you were able to save. They're much better for fishing. And we could use a pair of bows and some arrows. They say you soldiers don't consider it honorable, but our hunters use them, and judging from the fires we saw in the distance, you probably got new weapons anyway. And, of course, we want to know what happened.
OOC:
They'll only be able to provide about 2 days' rations, but if you're open to it, you will be able to find the materials they've asked for.
Jul 24, 2023 3:10 am
"Deal," Nikias says. He was hoping for at least two goats, but one would need be sufficient for the sacrifice. They would eat no fresh meat for a little while - he could live with that. "Andros, Giorios, Dimitrios - returns with the food. I will have my men gather what you have asked for."
Jul 31, 2023 4:51 pm
It takes a few hours for them to gather the supplies you've requested, but you meet again closer to the center of town.
OOC:
If you'd like, the PC's can be accompanied by Chryseis, Sinon, Mikros, and Kallon, to carry things and whatnot, unless you'd prefer something else.
By the time the exchange is made, Andros and his son are joined by many members of the village, including the old woman they mentioned. They offer to share a communal midday meal with you. Once everyone is settled, Andros speaks up.

So, ten years, and it's just over like that? Is there even anything left of Troy?
Jul 31, 2023 8:11 pm
"Indeed. Just like that," Nikias says. "By the grace of good King Oddyseus and our war tacticians, we stole into the city undetected and took it from within. A master stroke, though more deceptive than a soldier such as myself is accustomed to. Still, one cannot argue the success. No more sons or daughter of Greece, or Troy for that matter, need meet the end of their lives on the tips of one another's' spears, I hope. Troy itself does still stand, though only time will tell if she shall prosper as she once did."
Jul 31, 2023 10:22 pm
Andros takes a long draw of some water. Well, the gods give, the gods take away, I suppose. We didn't mean to cause undue trouble last night. I'm sure you understand.
Jul 31, 2023 11:06 pm
"Of course. You must protect yours and your own. Angering the Gods is not likely to help, however. Be warned, for I do not think we'd be upon your shores but for their wrath. Yet even we will be out of your business soon enough."
Aug 23, 2023 10:17 pm
And indeed, you are. With any sign of a storm long past, you leave the island behind you and continue towards Ithaca, by way of Sparta.
