Group Creation

Unlike the creation process for your game world, group creation isn’t particularly structured — in fact, it’s mostly about establishing the fundamental themes of your early adventures. When you select a group type, you are saying "Hey, this is how we want to explore the world we just created — we’d really like our shared story to mostly focus on these aspects of it."

Additionally, your choice of group will inform the kind of heroes you will make during the next step of session zero. Don’t take it as a restriction: instead, see it as a useful reference to go back to whenever you are unsure about your character concepts.

You can even give your group a name — such as the Brotherhood of the Griffin or the Queenshields.

If you are the Game Master, treat this step as a precious opportunity to learn what kind of situations, stories, and antagonists everyone is excited about!

[ +- ] BROUGHT TOGETHER BY FATE
[ +- ] GUARDIANS
[ +- ] HEROES OF THE RESISTANCE
[ +- ] REVOLUTIONARIES
[ +- ] SEEKERS

The first part to making characters is figuring out why you're all going to be together in the first place! These can just be starting points, and your aims and agenda can shift once play gets underway and picks up speed, so don't worry too much about these being The Plot Of The Campaign or whatever. This is just why you're together for that moment when the fire hits the fuel and things suddenly erupt into action and drama.

If I can start with a veto, I'm not in love with the first two. As the description for the first one says, it feels like it will lack a bit of momentum. As for the second one, I really don't like Chosen One tropes. I could definitely work with any of the other three though!

I agree with Sam here on eliminating the first two, good call!

I actually see the Seekers more than the other remaining two. Our world seems pretty diverse but not under direct terrible threat, so it doesn't feel like one of the nations would really be a thing to rebel against, and if a terrible power were to suddenly show up, we might lose some of the interplay and nuance between the factions since we've developed them so much.

Seekers would give our characters a clear goal at the outset. But seeking what! That, I don't know.

Concur, though I think we could make any of these work.

Could we do something as loose as we are Seeking a way to stop the sky and the pillars from falling? I think that's loose enough that it could tie into many different parts of the plot threads, and/or have many different avenues that your char might believe they can find that information?

Love y'all so much -- excellent job cutting straight through the chaff and finding what you really want.

I think this is a great thing to be Seeking, I don't think it's too loose at all.

Looking at the follow-up questions...

Š What is it you are trying to prevent or remedy? What are you looking for?
Y'all are trying to remedy the damage to the Pillar of Babel, and prevent a repeat of Koga, yeah? I think it's up to y'all whether or not the idea of the entire sky falling is even a possibility y'all are aware of.

As for what are y'all looking for, that's a good question. Like, are y'all searching for a specific Fomorian lore about damage to the pillars, trying to learn if its ever happened before and what was done? Are y'all searching for a specific Fomorian device that records say could mend anything? Are y'all searching for a descendent or disciple or record of Ol' Gesi himself, the only person to have ever climbed a Pillar, who came back changed, like a man possessed?

Š What do you know of your mission? Who or what gave you this information?
What do y'all know? Do y'all have a timeline to disaster? "The pillar may not fall for years... but by year's end, this crack will have spread into the city's foundation, and everyone here will lose their lives..." or whatever? Do y'all know that someone else has already been sent on this mission and never been heard back from? Do y'all have a starting point? Do you have someone you should be speaking to?

Have y'all been given info from the Emperor of Delos? Is this a mission from the crown itself? Or maybe a Sage within the Empire, a Sage whose ideas aren't being taken seriously by anyone because of how outlandish they must sound? Kind of a Galileo getting in trouble with the state kind of thing?

Š Who doesn't want you to find what you seek?
There obvious answers here in our threats, but are there any other answers? If y'all are being urged on by this Sage working in secret right beneath the Emperor's nose, are their Imperial agents under orders to control the narrative? If you're working with the Emperor, are you opposed by those religious elements within the Empire who hold that the Pillar of Babel is a symbol of God and thus cannot be damaged? Are there sky-pirates who don't want you to find X mostly because they are convinced that X must be something super valuable if you're under orders from the Emperor, and they want it for themselves?

Š What prompted each of you to join this mission?
Lots of good, interesting motivations out there, especially depending on the various little details above. People might be prompted by old mentors, loyalties, professional curiosities, duties and responsibilities, who knows what else.

Okay, I love the idea of the Sage working as a Galileo-like figure because of the additional intrigue and layers of complication it brings. At first I thought, "does it make sense that this would have to be a more covert operation, since everyone can see the cracks in the pillar? Surely the Emperor can see that there's a problem". Then I thought about climate change and it totally did make sense. >.<

Also, the Sage can have contacts from different countries, so it would make sense that the Sage could gather a multi-political group, so we wouldn't all have to be handpicked Delosians.

I love the opposition by the religious elements and the sky pirates. The Meridian can also be a threat, since they are the ones who "know" how to fix things, and think our interference will only make things worse!

As to what specifically we are looking for, I think any of those suggestions are good. Maybe one will lead to the other. Or maybe someone else has other ideas. It should be something concrete but difficult - go to a place and try to find the writings of someone in particular, or find a mythical device, or find someone who can tell us about one of these things, which will eventually lead to a new clue that leads us somewhere else.

I also like the idea of a Sage or Sages, and the opposition by Imperial forces. Yeah, in terms of motivations - are we able to bounce to char creation and then come back to flesh it out?

Sorry to be slow responding. As much as I like the world generation, I will also admit it's a lot and I struggle to keep up with all the exploding frontiers being laid down. I'm a simple man at heart. Or rather, i like to grow into complexity rather than start with gobs of it.

I like seeking to stop the sky from falling. I think I like us knowing, but the average / common folk do not, and they would PANIC.

Dig the sage. Did the Empire opposing us for some reason. Maybe there's an Advisor or Counsel to the Emperor, and they might be the real problem. Maybe they are all about Entropy, or just letting the sky fall because it's supposed to.

What what we're looking for, is it the original architects of the pillars, or the tools of those architects?

I'm totally with Sam. I need to see some character option stuff before I can start connecting those dots...

Totally fine with that! I think we've got our group premise stable enough for now!
