OOC:
Okay, we'll begin now, hopefully Gene will be able to quickly make a character and catch up.
You wake up. It's sudden and you lurch to a stop—where are you? How long has it been since you could think clearly? What are you doing and what are you wearing? You've got on dark robes over your normal garb, and your weapon is drawn. The place is dark, lit only by flickering torchlight, and you see each other standing in a circle. Your companions wear the same dark robes as you, their weapons also drawn, and they look just as bewildered and confused.

You hear a chocked laugh from a figure standing beside you, a human woman dressed in plate armor and dripping with blood. A slender stinger juts out from her chest, snapped off from the creature you now see that she's standing over. The thing at her feet is broken and crumpled like a dead spider, an insectile monstrosity almost in the shape of a man but with a face and limbs like some sort of horrible wasp. The woman smirks, and with one last laboured breath says, "You're finally free...", before collapsing and going still...

The echoes of the woman's armor reverberates throughout the hallways as she slams into the stone, then the sounds of her struggle fade into the darkness ahead of you and silence prevails. As you struggle to try and fill in the holes in your memory, you have countless questions come to your mind. What comes first and foremost is simply what will you do now?
Dec 2, 2023 12:05 am
Eronar groans and holds a hand to his head, his mind foggy. When he hears the woman's voice, he jumps a bit and turns to look, feeling a strange sense of sadness for this woman he doesn't recognize immediately. He staggers to her, moving to keep the insectile creature in view as he feels for a pulse. If he feels nothing, he looks around for a door, wanting nothing more than to be away from this horrible place.
Dec 2, 2023 12:08 am
Harsk gazes around. Trying in rangerly fashion to figure out just what’s going on! What’s all this, he exclaims in orc-mindedness. Even as he approaches the spider like carcass, and stoops low.

Let’s see if we can determine just what this thing is, he says. Or, was.

With the realization that there are others here besides this female warrior that just bit the big one, Scarfs takes a step back. Seeing that the others here appear to have the same headache she has, "She may be dead from poision."

Eronar will notice that this woman is indeed dead. Next to her is a warhammer, and she seems to be wearing a breastplate made from a strange metal, but it looks to be broken. Looking around, you notice you are in a large circular room, about 30 feet across. Along the walls are alcoves filled with what looks to be ceremonially shrouded bones. There is a stairway along the southern wall which spirals upward and into darkness.

Harks will determine that this insectile humanoid is not native to this world.

Scarfs will notice a stairs landing along the south wall (the same Eronar will have spotted) which is flanked by two torches, so she can see relatively well, as much as fluttering torches allow...

If you want to identify that woman, it will require an Intelligence (Culture) check.
Scarfs will be able to find... 5 silver pieces on the woman. Whatever her reason to be here was, it wasn't to spend her money...

You'll notice that her armor is a cold iron full plate armor, however it looks broken in places (it currently has the broken condition). Her warhammer seems to be of great quality, however, both hammer and armor have very unique and distinctive designs on them which might make re-selling them a bit difficult (if not raise some questions at the very least).

It was a kind of creature that parasitically preys upon angels and planar beings. That’s all I know about it. Surprised I know THAT much!

The smallest among the group was examining the creature as well. It fascinated Garbuffel Braffelfrew in fact. Excited him! This creature was strong! Not just physically, poison and all, but if it truly could control minds, or at least befuddle them, it was formidable! And through the shifting magicks he was close to mastering, perhaps he could emulate such traits to make this strength his own!

..That this creature had just had the better of him didn't seem to bother the mad halfling. Why, that only proved its strength!

Chester's mind snapped to attention, the sudden jolt in his environment putting him on edge. He glanced around the room, seeing other figures, robed and confused.

With a flock of his wrist, he coiled the long, leather bullwhip, noting with some consternation that he had seen fit at some point to fit its barbed, scourging tassel. Blackened, hardened fingertips jostled the sharp metal.

"You all seem to be taking this in stride,"
his voice was tense, but level, retaining calm in this... rather bizarre turn of events. "I don't suppose I might ask whose company I find myself in? And what, perhaps, was in that cocktail?"

The faces of your companions certainly feel familiar, but you cannot, for the life of you, recall where you met them, and for how long you've been travelling together, nor who they are. Your long term memories are pretty much intact, so you know who you are, and where you grew up and where you came from, but it seems that more "recent" events are missing, especially pertaining to how you all found yourself in this place.

"I can not fathom that this is without rhyme or reason." The tall, slender, humanoid cervine crouches over the body of the expired woman, rubbing his narrow chin as he took in the scene. Quite a mystery indeed.

He took a moment to self-assess, taking a deep breath to gauge if he had exerted himself recently, tongue running over his teeth and smelling his own breath to hunt for clues of an unfamiliar diet. Gauging his hunger and thirst in general, to assess his need, and perhaps how long it had been since he had eaten. He had never woken from a fugue state before, and part of his brain was quite amused by the puzzle, though most of it was churning to catch up to the situation.

"I would keep the robe, in case our fair maiden did not cut a wide enough or bloody enough swathe for us to escape. Unless one of you has a headcount for this..." he glanced around the windowless room, taking a moment before cresting a brow. "... crypt?"

He rose to his feet after concluding his examination of the woman. "Chester Artorius, by the way. Inspector Chester Artorius."

Chester was a tall, slender creature whose most striking feature was a slender, cervine skull with an impressive rack of antlers. Between them sat a checkered felt cap that sheltered his eyes with a stiffened brim. He was draped in a taupe cape of at least three layers, over a fabric doublet of a similarly drab, darker brown, but accented by dramatic diagonal herringbone quilting. All of which made the reddish tones and white undercoat of his natural pelt seem to stand out vibrantly - and none of which really made the black robe look wholly out-of-place but for its haphazard cut.

At his hip swung both a small sword and an intricate crossbow with an elaborate winding mechanism, no larger than a cubit in either length or span, but the weapon he held to hand was a long bullwhip of almost-black leather, at whose tip dangled a handful of caltrop-like spikes from tiny steel chains, designed to rake, rend, and grip.

"Hmm."

Chester's narrow lip contorted a bit as his tongue worked something out of his teeth, then extended his tongue. He took a tiny nugget of something, rolling it between his slender thumb and hardened forefinger, examining it closely with one eye. "Hard tack. And not my usual vendor for emergencies." His tongue clicked against the roof of his mouth. "And... honey? Or some kind of confection." He eyed the vast, dead wasp with some consternation.

"Whatever spell or witchery compelled us here, it's kept me for at least a few days, if I deigned to eat this." He flicked the spherical crumb towards the beast with distaste. "And it likely compelled us to raise arms against our presumptive rescuer."

Scarfs Looks about the mess she sees. There is this male Humanoid Cervine that claims to be an inspector of sort. A male Half-Orc that says he is a ranger that thinks that spider thang hunts angels or planar thangs. Then there is a guy who is a strange 6' dwarf and looks to be a fighter type of some kind. There is a little male halfling looking around. And this quiet hooded man.

"Well. I can safely say we are mess. That was Annika Crestveil, a famous adventurer who just got knocked off by that spider thing that looks possibly planar like. And all she told us before she died was "You're finally free." Whatever that means."

With another breath, "You all seem vaguely familiar, but I can't place a single one of you. Only thing I'm sure of is that is the way out and all of you look like adventures. Would be nice if the rest of you would at least chirp up a name too."

"Unless you have any other thoughts, I say we find out where this staircase leads to." as Scarfs moves to the stairs after taken down a torch for light. "Lets see where this goes." She is being not particularly quiet and careful. Scarfs has a shortsword drawn in her other hand.

She appears to have decided to leave this place. Post haste. With no idea of where she is. But has decided being here isn't going to solve anything. She can sort this mess out later.

The halfling suddenly looked up from the examination of the wasp-thing and for the first time seemed to take in its surroundings. This place sure felt underground. Which was good. Halflings liked burrowing and living in the earth. But of the incessant babbling of the tall-folk around him was to be believed, this was some form of cult. He looked down at his black robes. Yup. Those were exactly the kind of robes a cult member would wear. He would know. He had been in one. Two now! Progress!

"If I'm a cultist again, I wonder who I have been worshiping. And if I got something in return for my effort!"
Dec 3, 2023 7:31 pm
Scarfs only looks back as she hears and notices the Halfling move. Shakes her head and continues on as she hears some babbling. She thinks. "Yep, it is a Halfing. And probably lost."
Dec 3, 2023 7:32 pm

Dec 4, 2023 1:05 am
Eronar rubs his face, looking haunted, "My name?" he asks, pulling it from the recesses of his memory, "I'm Eronar and I'm a woodsman. I think..."
Dec 4, 2023 6:29 pm
Garbuffel was fascinated with the stylized insect wing on his robes. He rubbed over it, thinking out loud...
"Hmmmm. Bug. Bugs can be strong. Especially the big ones..."

Peeking through the double doors, Scarfs will notice a large 10 ft-wide corridor which plunges into drakness beyond the range of her torches. The whole corridor looks wet and glistens in the torchlight.

Eronar and Garbuffel both examine the altar. Whatever deity it was dedicated to, it must have been a very old or obscure one as they both fail to determine who it is. They do both notice, however, that strange runes still glow in the front of the altar, as if a puzzle had recently been solved to slide it aside and reveal the staircase.

Roark takes one last look at the crypt below before ascending the staircase. This does seem as the last resting place of holy men. None of them seems to be wearing anything remotely similar to your dark robes so Roark is pretty certain they did not belong to the cult you seem to have been recruited (or shangaied) into.

Though he would have investigated further, he seemed not to want to be left alone in such a place. "Dwarf," Chester spoke to Roark as he ascended the stair, "Can you tell our depth?" The lack of windows in a place of worship was a warning sign, but perhaps it was a benevolent dwarven hearth-god's temple, or some sort of benign mole deity...

For their part, Roark, Garbuffel, and Harks will find several boxes of unpleasant but serviceable hardtack as well as a few filled waterskins. All in all, you have enough food here to produce 10 Supplies.
Dec 9, 2023 9:34 am
No worries Chester.
Roark distributes 2 days of food supplies to each before opening the west door
Dec 9, 2023 6:57 pm
Scarfs put away the food supplies in her backpack, "Well that was something at least, but much help to tell us much where or why." while her light green eyes keep alert.

She still has her short sword ready for action and she has pitched her acquired black cultist robes off to side in the room. You can now see she is in just everyday common clothing with a suit of leather armor over it. She now shows off her 5'6" self and you note she is fair attractive red headed woman with long red hair now that she is disrobed.

For extra light, she has taken off a hooded lantern from the side of her backpack and has lite it up. She is holding it in her off hand. Seems she feel the need for individual safe light. Obviously, she is Human and can't see in the dark.

Let’s move quickly everyone, before the acid eats through our bridge!
Dec 18, 2023 9:51 pm
"EEEEHEEEH! Told you! Didn't listen! Now you need new shoes!" Garbuffel laughed at Scarfs.
Dec 18, 2023 11:15 pm
Scarfs weighs the thoughts of, "Let's play handball with the little halfling and see if he roasts in the acid too." but she passes on it. She has had worse to deal with. But the little turd is right about her shoes being messed over. Grrr.

And by looks, it might be a bit tough to brand new spanking ones too. She does like nice soft boots. They don't make as much noise and work well with her nimble self.

With the bridge done, she is more than ready to move. "Lets find a way out of here. I have shopping to do for new boots now."
Dec 19, 2023 12:38 am
With judicious placing of the doors, you can skip enough of the slime so you don't burn (you could've also used the old pews too, but oh well...). You finally make it to the other side where Scarfs is and can notice the room full of broken bones and partial skeletons as well... In fact, as you make your way to this room, two skeletons wearing ancient burial shrouds extirpate themselves from the rubbles and turn empty eye sockets burning with pinprick motes of blue light against a dark void towards you... What do you do?

Chester took careful steps over the makeshift bridge, his hooves clacking on the planks as he brought up the rear. But the sight of the skeletal warriors had him back on his heels.

"Back! They may not be clever enough to avoid the acid..!"
Dec 19, 2023 8:12 am
Scarfs says as she has a shortsword drawn, "They either going to let us pass or going to attack us any moment. I suspect the later now." She is not at all bold enough to take a front if she can avoid it. Stepping back is something she favors.

"Well, if they're not coming, we can pelt them with arrows, perhaps." He reached for the tiny crossbow at his hip, racking up a bolt and taking aim. Not the most effective weapon against a pile of bones, perhaps, but he did not fancy getting too close and having his coat get torn up.

Okay, so right now, your only source of light, IIRC, is a torch carried by Scarfs. The torch provides 20' of bright light and another 20' of dim light beyond that. If you retreated all the way back the corridor to lure in the skeleton, the corridor is 40' long, add another 10' to 20' for the skeletons being a bit further inside the large room and they are more likely in complete darkness right now.
So unless you have darkvision, shooting at the skeletons is going to be very difficult if not down right impossible. I'll let you discuss a plan of action for now, you have plenty of time anyways as the skeletons seem rather uninterested in you at the moment...

One skeleton crumbles from the concentrated fire and the other turns towards you. INITIATIVE!

Note that in a5e, initiative is not always a straight DEX roll, depending on the situation and what can be justified, it can also be a skill check. Also, since you are now fighting only one remaining skeleton, I think we can do this fight in a "theatre of the mind" style for now.

Chester took a step forward, in front of the bowmen, uncoiling the length of his bullwhip. Let's move on
Dec 29, 2023 12:32 am
As the thunder of his bullwhip echoed in the empty hall, Chester peered out into the darkness, the weapon coiling and curling as if it had a life of its own as he watched the silent darkness. Only after a few moments of stillness did he retract it, keeping the compact bundle to hand.

He put out an ear to the darkness, but the only thing he could hear was the subtle hiss of the skeleton's bones reacting with the gooey remains. "I think it's all clear."

Eronar keeps his bow in hand, not taking for granted that they are safe. He waits for someone else to lead the way so he can cover their advance.

There is also a neatly coil or rope on your side of the pit, next to it.

Leaning forwards, he examined the mechanism, to see if it would cause any havoc. He also leaned close to the door, testing it with one hand, seeing if he could peek through it or, failing that, listen to see if he could hear any commotion on the other side.

Which might explain the presence of the nearby heavy rusted lever...

"The real wonderful thing about doors," Chester said dryly, "is that they most often work both ways."

He punctuated that by giving the lever a pull.
Jan 18, 2024 1:53 pm
At the lever's pull you hear the grind of stone and the shine of daylight pours into the darkened catacombs. With a stuttering jolt the door suddenly swings open with a hearty smack and you hear muttered curses from the other side.
Blinking in the light, you see into a cluttered alleyway, the sounds of bustle and civilization starkly contrasting the deathly silence of the catacombs. You spot a halfling, the source of the muttered curses, picking himself off the trash-littered cobblestone and rubbing a fresh red mark on his forehead. He raises a knife and begins to shout but drops it and gasps the moment he sees your faces saying, "Why you little! Ah, heh... forgive me... I, ah... didn't realize I was speaking with celebrities." The halfling gestures to the wall behind him, which you now see is plastered with countless wanted posters each bearing a striking if exaggerated likeness of you and your companions with the words "Wanted, dangerous cultists, dead or alive 100 gold reward."
The halfling then sheepishly looks up at you and asks, "You, ah... ain't gonna cut out my kidneys or whatever cultists do, right?"
Jan 18, 2024 9:05 pm
Garbuffel, who somehow had mastered the slightly crazed look that cultists typically donned to a disturbing degree, stepped out to confront his fellow halfling.
"Eh? No no, what good are kidneys? You need the heart for a proper meal!"
Jan 18, 2024 9:15 pm
Scarfs has a dismayed look on her face upon see that she is a cultist! Kinda glad she got rid of that cultist robe earlier but still there is her picture with a likeness to ruin her. And gesh. Only 100 gp DEAD or alive.

"This is wrong and WE need to fix this. FAST." as she realizes the entire group is effected. She fairly much ignores the halflings existence at the moment.
Jan 18, 2024 11:32 pm

"Well, in that case, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Belton Freedew, at your service. I know a lot about Northminster, the city we are currently in." He continues, "I know that Tariq Crestveil, the captain of the guards, has been trying to stamp down your little cult for weeks now. Don't worry, you're in Redwall, a rather lawless area of town where the guards rarely patrol."
Belton then scratches his chin for a moment, "Hmm, memories wiped by magic... and bugs you say?" he then snaps his fingers saying, "Apple Pie! No... Appleseed! Granny Appleseed did some magical whatsits and he was all better and beating me at cards again. If there's anybody who can fix them memories, it'll be her. With a sad sigh, Garbuffel went back inside and changed out of his cultist robes, which he did roll up and put on the bottom of his pack. For later. Who knows when you need some good cultist robes?

I know one of you is thinking about a haircut, I haven't heard about the rest of you...
Following Belton's instructions, you make your way to Tinbellow's Practice. As if to assure you you're indeed at the right place, the storefront reads "Tinbellow's Medical Practice". As you enter, you make a small bell attached to a door ring, and an older dwarf who's busy making inventory of his stock turns to you with a rather uninterested look on his face.

"Yeah, what is it..." This sounded more like a statement of annoyance more than a greeting or a question...
Jan 30, 2024 5:24 pm
I would like to shave my head. I can do it myself if I can borrow the tools. Please. Belton said that you were the man to help
Jan 30, 2024 5:49 pm
As Roark goes in to negotiate for a restyle, Chester takes a seat on a rain barrel in an alley, producing a small case of accessories. A bit of bootblack rubbed on his antlers, an eyepatch, and a few scraps of the torn-up robe stitched to the cuffs and joins of his coat was remarkably transformative, turning him from an aristocratic burgher to a rough, almost mercenary. His sword moved lower on his hip, looking more menacing and ready, and he inverted one of the layers of his cape, revealing a tartan of dark forest green that broke up the distinctive layered browns of his outfit.

The transformation was quite striking, lending him an air of weary menace that would repel casual inspection. And no need to pay a barber.
Jan 30, 2024 8:40 pm
Garbuffel's attention span was, as the sages would call it, infinitesimally small. Whatever objective the group had, had long departed his mind and as the group entered the shop, the halfling became captivated by the oddities on the shelves..
Jan 30, 2024 10:30 pm
Scarfs walks in with everyone. "dried yewclaw bark" is what is on her mind. She mentions, "You have so much here." as she looks about.
Jan 30, 2024 10:41 pm
Eronar goes inside the building as well, prepared to cut off his hair. It's certainly better than being recognized as a cultist!
Jan 30, 2024 11:25 pm
"Now I don't know what Belton told you, but I'm not about to lend my tools to complete strangers. Get your ass in the chair!" He then motioned to Roark towards the barber chair to one side of the little shop. As he gathered his tools, he then turned his attention to Scarfs. "Dried yewclaw bark eh? Yeah sure, I sell those for 5 gold pieces each. How much do you need?"
Feb 2, 2024 11:49 pm
Scarfs digs out 20 gold coins from her special coin pouch, "I think that this would be enough for some Dried Yewclaw Bark and something to carry it in."

I love that Roark decided his hair was his most distinctive feature, and not his purple skin and markings... XD
"That'll be two gold pieces." Tinbellow says to Roark before grabbing four dried yewclaw bark, wrapping them, putting them in a bag, and handing them to Scarfs. "Now, if you'll excuse me, unless some more of you are in an urgent need of a haircut, I really need to go back to see if I have plenty of medication to take care of this sudden rash of sewer fever here in Redwall..."
Feb 3, 2024 6:03 pm
'I need the 20 gold owed to me by the goblins Muggs and Runns,'

Scarfs inquires, "By the way my good doctor, would you know of a pair goblins named Muggs and Runns?"
Feb 4, 2024 6:30 am
"Yes, I'll get a haircut as well," Eronar says with a sigh, running his hand through his hair wistfully before he sits down.
Feb 4, 2024 6:08 pm
Tinbellow answers Scarf's querry while motioning Eronar on the barber's chair. "Yeah, I know them, couple of ne'er-do-well who were leftovers from a goblin raid on Northminster years ago. Not sure why they stayed here, but they've been a minor nuisance here ever since. They seem to be fond of spending time at the whistling well north of here. If you're looking for them, my bet is this is where you'll find them."
Feb 6, 2024 8:55 pm
".... Anyone else we should know about that spends time at the whistling well?" Now under the wrap of disguise, and not skulking alleys where the scent would give him away, Chester sat near the door to the barber, giving a small puff of tobacco smoke.
Feb 6, 2024 11:20 pm
As Eronar takes place in the chair, Tinbellow asks him "So, do I shave you bald like your friend over there?", then to answer Chester's query, Tinbellow shrugs "The well is a bit of an oddity, it emits this whistling sound, nobody knows why exactly. It attracts the odd curious, at least those brave, stupid, or desperate enough to come to the Redwall district. Then of course, it's also our local source of water, so you'll have the occasional resident coming there to get a pale full of clean water..."
Feb 11, 2024 9:41 pm
Scarfs nod to the man about his answer. She takes up residence next to Chester as she likes the scent of his tobacco smoke. She knows that she has kill time at the moment.
Feb 11, 2024 10:40 pm
Eronar shakes his head, "Just cut it short. Should be good enough or my head's gonna get cold," he says to Tinbellow.
Feb 18, 2024 11:51 pm
Tinbellow cuts Eronar's hair, as requested. "That'll be 2 gold pieces. Anyone else in need of anything?"

Quick TL;DR for @ChrSch so they're not stock reading 10 pages of posts to catch up.

The only thing that makes sense right now is if we pretend you were part of the group all along...

You all woke up in a dungeon with no memories, weapons drawn, surrounding a dying female adventurer who seemed happy that you "finally broke free" before she died of her wounds. Further inspection revealed the wounds were inflicted in a fight against a wasp-like entity which seems to have taken over your minds and enrolled you all into a cult, probably against your will. While you remember who you are, you have huge gaps in your memories, especially where how you got here and how you got involved into a cult is concerned.

You then proceeded through a sort of "reverse dungeon" which had already been (mostly) cleared by the dead female adventurer you had identified as Annika Crestveil.

You eventually made your way out of the complex where you met a halfling named Belton Freedew who informed you that you were in the Redwall district of Northminster, that you were indeed part of a cult and wanted criminals, knew about someone who could help you with your memories, and that he was willing to smuggle you out of town if you were willing to help him with some errands.

Where the party is at right now, you had just taken care of getting the dried yewclaw bark from Tinbellows and were asking the doctor about the two goblins Muggs and Runns... with a few party member getting a haircut hoping it would alter their appearance enough to not get caught...

So, that should be you all caught up.
Mar 2, 2024 8:02 pm
Scarfs arranged the purchase of the dried yewclaw bark and is eager to leave. She quietly stands near the door making like a statue or doll.

having skimmed over the previous posts, I'm assuming that the doctor/barber has some kind of shop?

Yes, Tinbellow's Medical Practice to be more exact.
As Zaiachi waits outside, he catches a fragment of conversation from two passerbys.

"...yeah, found him in that alley over there, wasn't much left o' him..."

"Waddya mean?'

"Just bones and torn clothes really, like something ate his flesh and left the rest behind...
Mar 3, 2024 1:27 pm
After listening to the conversation Zaiashi gets up and goes into the medical clinic to inform his companions about what he has heard but when he spots Roark he throws Welcome to the guild of wise men, Roark into the room before informing the others.
Mar 12, 2024 10:25 pm
So, you're done getting your head shaved, Zaiashi who has always been with you (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) enters and informs you of a rumor he just heard concerning a dead body.

What do you do?

Mar 13, 2024 9:48 pm

Mar 14, 2024 10:08 pm

Zaiashi sighs and silently shakes his head, but smiles a little at how easily Scarfs seems to disregard potential trouble.
Mar 16, 2024 1:30 am
From Tinbellow's and Belton's directions, as well as what you've walked so far, you can estimate roughly the following map...
https://i.imgur.com/Cc5Uj1L.jpeg
With A being where you exited the complex, B being the Thrifty Griffin, C being the Whistling Well (where you should in theory find Runns and Muggs), and D being Tinbellow's Medical Practice, where you currently are all located.
Mar 16, 2024 1:47 am
"Runns and Muggs are close by. Lets take care of them. I can get my new boots afterwards."
Mar 16, 2024 8:44 am
"That seems to be a good idea. Are you all ready to go? a hint of impatience is tinging Zaiashi's voice.
Mar 16, 2024 3:19 pm
Yes, I am ready. Let’s move on.
Mar 16, 2024 4:46 pm
You make your way north of Tinbellow's practice towards the Whistling Well. Eventually, just following the low whistling sound is enough to guide you. Near an old worn well, you spot two goblins. The larger one wears a large sweater and a bowler hat and is currently smoking a cigar. The smaller of the pair is wearing a long trench coat. The area around the well seems large enough to be used as a meeting place if need be, but right now, there is nobody here except you and the two goblins.
Mar 16, 2024 6:52 pm
Garbuffel looks down the well. Will it fit a goblin?
Mar 16, 2024 7:31 pm
Definitely. You can also determine that the whistling sound does indeed come from the well. You also notice that some walls further down seem to have crumbled in part. If air is circulating through those, this would explain the whistling sound you hear.
Mar 16, 2024 9:11 pm
Somewhat disappointed that there was in fact no small goblin at the bottom doing the whistling, Garbuffel sighed with disappointment and leaned back and looked around. Naturally, his attention was drawn to the goblins. Or, more specifically, the big goblin's top hat. What a lovely hat that was. It made him... made him... made... him....

Taller.

"Hey!"
Garbuffel called to the goblins.
"Help me! There's a small goblin in the well! I think it's stuck!"
Mar 16, 2024 9:45 pm
"These turds probably don't care. Whomever owns then didn't tell them to do jack, but they do owe and going to be their problem." Half directed to Garbuffle and rest to the Goblins.

Totally directed at the goblins, "Or do you have a name to save your soles." The athletic red headed Scarfs has her hand neatly on the pommel of her short sword for added thoughts. She looks to be eager to settle this point with their blood. Scarfs needs to learn some Goblin as her Orc is little use here. She stares them down with her light green eyes trying to look menacing.

An interesting point to the party. While Scarfs was inside finding a way out, she fairly much avoided making eye contact and now the last couple times since we have been out, she has always made hard eye contact. This is a noticeable difference to those with keen senses would note.

Sure, we need their money to complete up and all. But Scarfs is really more interest in who is running their show. She has a bit of hate for such people. It is what really gets her gall. There is a line of such people that really like to express their interest in her in very physical manors.

She would have no problems with poisoning this well with their bodies. Scarfs doesn't believe she has lived here as she can't remember any of the places around here. Further that those she has seen, don't recognize her in the slightest. Not that there is too many flaming red headed women around.

Scarfs can't recall what put her here but that doesn't change who she is. She is unsure if she could other means of influence. At least till she fingers out where exactly she is. Being in a city doesn't help. There is lots of them. She wonders if the Noble Mistress Morgana has any pull here.

Then when Scarfs attempts to intimidate the goblins, bowler hat guy turns his attention to her. "Whats yer problem berk? You look stupid with your barefeet. Now sod off before I put yer toes in yer mouth..." Once again, his smaller compatriot echoes the sentiment. "Yeah! Put yer toes in yer mouth!"

Mar 17, 2024 10:33 pm
Garbufel's smile faded away, along with the jovial twinkle in his eyes. Where before his posture was loose and relaxed, his back tensed and his movements became powerful. His eyes locked with the goblin with the top hat and the halfling stepped up to him with fast paces. Up close, he smiled, but it was not a pleasant thing to see. He had a rictus grin, and he lashed out with his right hand, snatching the top hat from the goblin. He then placed the hat on his own head, still smiling, daring the goblin to respond..

Mar 29, 2024 6:47 pm
OOC:
sacred flame cantrip
Mar 30, 2024 5:04 pm
OOC:
Okay, so basically, you produced a flame in your hand to light the area. You can also, as part of casting this spell or in a later round, also perform a ranged spell attack, which means that you can throw the flame at the goblin using your WIS mod.
Of course if you do so right now, you'll make your ranged spell attack at disadvantage because you are in melee with your target seeing as since this is a surprise round, you would have performed your action which would meant that you cannot also move. You could move away from the goblin next round (a normal combat round) to throw your flame it it with no penalties, but doing so would provoke an attack of opportunity from it since you're exiting a threatened area.
Another possibility would be to attack the other goblin instead...
Mar 30, 2024 7:19 pm
OOC:
right I forgot about the disadvantage because close quarters. Would I also attack at disadvantage if I'm attacking the other one? I know the range is correct but my original target would be standing right next to me?
Mar 31, 2024 12:29 am
OOC:
I thought the answer was no, but yes, if you are within melee range of an hostile creature, you make ranged attacks at disadvantage even if the target of the ranged attack is not the creature you are in melee with.
Mar 31, 2024 6:29 am

well in that case I would like to do this instead, if it's okay to redo this:

Imagining Garbuffel's reaction Zaiashi can't help but chuckle at Ugost changing his appearance seemingly at a whim.
To the thrifty dragon then?
Apr 6, 2024 10:35 pm
Provisions was a secondary thought really. Scarfs has 15 days of food on her and waterskin. It was more for new boots at Thrifty Griffin. Extra snacks off course would be nice. Scarfs does miss the pair of boots that got acid roasted.

Looks like we are going to be huffing by foot to the "Appleseed" lady to get our memories back. Being mark as a dire cultist doesn't favor with Scarfs. She wants her story back. She wonders how bad her name and the names she taken have been smeared.

Being dead or alive for 100 gp doesn't set well. Being in a party of misfits (Non-Humans) makes us so much more visible. And yes, I'm sure they can put Ugost in a jar. Thangs come to worse, Scarfs is in excellent shape for running. Her long legs cover ground well.

"Yeah. Right Thrift Griffin" as she corrects Zaiashi Kori.

"Zariana." The pale skinned woman who hadn’t been of much use up till now said with a nod. She’s been following the group with a thoughtful expression on her face and now she appeared to have solved her dilemma. "That’s my name, Zariana, been vexing me since the before we left that temple."

"Sorry," she said with a wave of her hand before smoothing out her skirt, "difficult to be, of use, when one doesn’t know what one can of use for."

Garbuffel looked at the Goo-thing that had most definitely been there the whole time. A fellow cultist and comrade in arms, so he had thought. Until it transformed into the goblin. With the hat. Garbuffel stared at Ugost most queerly, and as the sentient goo man looked back, he saw Garbuffel smile widely with a rictus grin, and his left eyebrow seemed to tremble as his eyes shifted up to the hat that matched the one he was wearing himself.
"Say... that's a nice hat you got there. Heheh."

His club was still glowing. In fact, Garbuffel was squeezing it so hard, magical force seemed to be pouring into it at an unhealthy rate..

Scarfs in custom fitted padded leather armor portrays her of a woman of action and her gear of a traveling sort. Her shortsword & dagger combo on her belt says she can be dangerous. Being barefooted really doesn't make the scene.

"Good. Now you know something more.' Scarfs had introduced herself earlier. Scarfs has plenty of papers on her tell a lot about her, but none fill in the blank. None here recognize her as Mistress Morgana or Bozorina.

Situation between the jelly and shorts just brings a scant smile from Scarfs.

"Well first, I think all of you need to ditch those robes and close that door in order to avoid attracting too much attention." Belton Freedew point at those of you still wearing cultist robes (which at that point I believe is only Garbuffel) and the door to the crypts by which you exited. "As for the Weirwoods, they're not exactly close, which is good for you lot because you wanna put as much distance between you and Northminster. See, I have this wagon and horse, but we'll need supplies. First, I need some dried yewclaw bark form Dr. Tinbellows, who should also be able to give you a nice haircut if you need, then I need the 20 gold owed to me by the goblins Muggs and Runns, finally, as many supplies as you think you'll need for the journey, you can get those out of the back of the Thrifty Griffon. Once you get all those, you can come and get me, I'll be waiting for you behind the Thrifty Griffon.
kalajel says:
"Well, in that case, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Belton Freedew, at your service. I know a lot about Northminster, the city we are currently in." He continues, "I know that Tariq Crestveil, the captain of the guards, has been trying to stamp down your little cult for weeks now. Don't worry, you're in Redwall, a rather lawless area of town where the guards rarely patrol."
Belton then scratches his chin for a moment, "Hmm, memories wiped by magic... and bugs you say?" he then snaps his fingers saying, "Apple Pie! No... Appleseed! Yeah, that's it, Granny Appleseed, a weird old broad, lives out in the Weirwood. My cousin took a real nasty wallop and went all thick in the head, could barely talk. Granny Appleseed did some magical whatsits and he was all better and beating me at cards again. If there's anybody who can fix them memories, it'll be her. Way out of the city too, which is good for you lot because the longer you stay around here the better chance captain Tariq is gonna catch you and lop off yer heads. Now, I can't get you outta Norhtminster for free exactly—I may need your help with a few things before we can get out of here..."

Of course, the real Muggs would have said 'I dun owes you nuttin' instead, but yeah, a pretty convincing first try, I'd say." He then turns to the rest of you. "Hey, you other guys can pull off something like that? It would help a lot in smuggling the whole lot of you guys outta here..." Finally, remembering Scarfs question, he turns to her, happily pocketing the dried yewclaw bark and the 20 gold pieces "Those? Oh, well I was expecting you guys to be able to purchase maybe 2 or 3 of those, but the more you can purchase, the better really. There is no hurry. Besides, I think teh other spellcasters have locked in their choice of spells a long time ago, that, and as I stated earlier, Identify requires a costly spell component that 1st level characters are unable to purchase right away... Right now, what you really need are extra supplies so your character can make the long journey to the Weirwoods. Pretty close. Supplies are mostly used as provision. When in a long rest, you must consume 1 supply or become fatigued, but some class features/maneuvers/feats/whathaveyou allows you to use supplies in creative ways. In addition to their equipment, all players begin carrying a number of supplies equal to their STR score for free. If purchased (to refill used up supplies or carried as extra rations), supplies cost 5 sp (and weight 2 lb. when carried as extra) each.

You get your STR score. Teh party did found an extra 10 supplies in the catacombs that they split amongst themselves (not +10 each, just 10 total to split). So far, I can see that both Harsk and Scarfs seems to have taken 2 each. Garbuffel has 4, but I'm not sure if he grabbed 4 from the 10 of if those were supplies Kuhold bought at character creation, not knowing they started with supplies equal to their STR score... So far, that seems to leave 6 extra supplies to split between Ugost, Vuras, Zaiashi, and Zariana... Also, Ugost has a STR of 10, not sure where that 12 came from...
Apr 11, 2024 7:59 pm
GM: Scarfs eats like any other persons and full of energy all the time. She doesn't tire easily.

13 days rations (due to STR) & 2 days rations (due to 10 split) with Waterskin
Lantern & 3 Oil with Tinderbox

That is it. She doesn't really have travel gear. Like tent, bedroll, blanket or even a mess kit but has gold coins to buy such. And she wants to buy a pair boots as well. Perhaps some extra sacks.

Okay, I see. Seems some people can have more supply in their starting gear. Something I had not anticipated. It's perfectly okay in that case, guess the group doesn't need as much supply as I had expected... BTW, with Harsk leaving, that's 2 more extra supply to redistribute...
Okay, the rules state that everyone begins with a number of supply equal to their STR score. They carry those fore "free" (as in they don't count against your encumbrance) in addition of their starting equipment. If your starting equipment somehow starts with more supplies, those will be counted as part of your encumbrance (or equipment pack's encumbrance). So yeah, it's possible for some of you to be carrying an astounding amount of supplies right now...
For those looking for extra clothes, we'll say that you find a decent fit for 2 sp. For those looking for other type of equipment, we'll be using the regular equipment list, within reason, of course...

For those still wishing to purchase supplies, the owner, an half-elf woman named Ms. Margo, will have, in addition of regular supplies, old canned trail rations that have lost their labels and which she sells for only 1 sp per supply.

Healing potion is 50GP so we might be able to afford it if we sell stuff, like the scroll, or pool our resources. We can ID the 2 potions and salve we got from the goblins once out of town. I dont think we should linger long enough to do so.
Apr 12, 2024 10:40 pm
Scarfs gave Ugost 3 gp from the cache from the Goblins.

Scarfs buys boots (2 gp. She wants very nice ones.), Mess Kit (2 sp), Bedroll (1 gp), 2 Sacks (2 cp), Soap (2 cp), & Two-Person Tent (2 gp)

Scarfs has three sacks hanging off her backpack with a lantern, bedroll & a tent.

Marked off 5 gp, 2 sp, 4 cp. And adjusted her gear as she wiggles her feet in her new boots. At two gp, she probably bought the best that the store had for boots. Yes. We have some ointments, two potions, & scroll to ID. That is one of Scarfs's hanging sacks.

Scarfs is more ready to travel. Scarfs looks well packed up like outdoor's traveler. All of Scrafs's gear looks to in fine shape and of fair quality. She doesn't look cheap at all.

The scroll has been ID'd (and probably taken) by Zariana as a scroll of Chill Touch. She's the only one who can use it.

Yeah, you'll have mostly mundane adventuring items available. I'll say she has 2 spare healing potions to sell (at 50 gp a pop, I doubt you can purchase more than that anyways).
Apr 13, 2024 12:23 am
Cool. Marked the scroll off of Scarfs's inventory. Still have two potion and some ointments to discover. Yeah. Scarfs isn't purchasing any healing potions today.

Just making sure. It is fully decided that Scarfs can't do anything with Spell Scrolls as she has no spell lists.

GM: Just an odd point, should Scarfs encounter a spell scroll that matches her unique ability to cast then would she be able to ID that spell scroll. Should that unique situation ever happen. That spell scroll would have to be "disguise self". Just a asking.

Belton nods at "Muggs'" assessment.

"Yes, I think we've dallied around here en-"

Belton's statement is cut short by an angered scream through the cluttered alleyway of Redwall. Curious, you all poke your head around the Thrifty Griffin to see several town guards cluttered around the secret entrance you emerged from not too long ago. A man dressed in armor trailing a bright red cape emerges from the catacombs, wailing and clutching the body of Annika Crestveil. You can hear him scream. "Sister! I swear I'll avenge you! I'll tear those bloody cultists limb from limb!"

She has no intention on tangling with Tariq Crestveil, captain of the guards, after he found the body of Annika Crestveil. Scarfs was pretty sure that was who the body was and now she is positive of it.

She says to Garbuffel, "Keep up shorts." in a mere look back. (At 5'6" she still towers over him even with the hat.)

Agile Scarfs wonders what a famous adventurer like Annika had dealing with Tariq and why she said "You're finally free" before dying. Mystery that bothers Scarfs.

That and she had only five silver coins on her. Darn Goblins did better. Scarfs is one that knows the value of the coin. Scarfs has been around a lot.

Her light green eyes seem to be rather alert as she watches for trouble and looks much like a traveler but in better looking gear. (Perception 22 system decided to roll again for me. So sweet.)

Zariana follows along behind Scarfs, "Do you know where we're going?" She whispers looking about in the dark.

She does a quick head count of the number of people in the group, "Do you know the layout of the city? Perhaps there's a high wall we can get over to get out."

Zariana had no clue about the city's lay out, it felt as though she'd simply awoken in the dungeon with the dying woman and maybe she had, that was a distinct possibility given the way her life cycle worked.

"I really like your boots." Zariana added. She'd bought a pair herself but they were slung over her pack as fresh blisters during an escape seemed like a bad idea. The skin full of wine on the other hand had felt like a good investment. "They're very nice."
Apr 14, 2024 8:08 pm
Scarfs says to Zarinana, "We just head over to Tinbellow's. Just follow me. Belton will get us out of town. And yes, I do love these new boots. They are worth the two gold coins."

OOC:
Don't worry, you will have had time to purchase whatever you need, this even is triggered once everyone is done with their shopping.
Ugost follows Belton very convincingly all the way to some stable. He grabs the reign of some horse and leads it towards a wagon willed with bedrolls when he notices ha had been followed all along... "Alright, come on Rumynose, time to go... Muggs!? What the hell are you doing he- Oh right, it's you... well, two pair of hands will work faster, help me hitch my horse to my wagon."
Belton is right, two people working together goes faster, so much so that you're pretty sure you made it to Tinbellow's in 3 minutes rather than 5... this is when you meet the rest of the gang.
"Alright, well here's the plan. I have all those bedrolls, I was hoping to sow snuff in them, but they'll do just as well to hide people inside. Hop in. Well, except for you, I suppose, your disguise seems good enough, you can ride along with me if you want." he says to Ugost.
Apr 15, 2024 5:22 pm
At's right. I's a goblin of opportunity. And now I be taking yours. Charun chuckles sinisterly as he climbs up to the front of the wagon. He sets his greatclub at his feet and leans back tipping his 'hat' low to shade his eyes.

Concealed amidst bedrolls and darkness, the wagon begins tenuously rattling along the cobblestone leaving you only with your hushed breath and the tenseness of your thoughts. A few minutes pass until the wheels roll to a slow stop as you hear a gruff voice say, "Hey there Belton—leaving town a bit early for you eh? And with Muggs?"
Your halfling driver replies, "Ah, had a good deal on these bedrolls, you know how it is. Runns told us he found something interesting outside town, so we thought we might go investigate... Oh, by the way, I snagged you some of that yewclaw."
Grabbing it, the guard then replies, though not before mumbling something about weird goblins... "Yer a saint there Belton. Can't keep awake with these shifts otherwise. But that said, I can't pass ya along, not with them cultists running about. Gotta check every wagon, captain's orders."
Belton sounds comforting and smooth as silk as he responds, "Really sad to hear that friend... YHA!" before snapping the reins and driving the wagon forward! After just a moment of shouts and thuds he yells backwards, "Could use a hand here!"

kalajel sent a note to Psybermagi
You emerge from your hiding to find Belton nursing a guard's spear sticking from his leg, the wagon hurtling at full tilt, and several guards on horseback giving chase! Belton turns to "Muggs" (or anyone else willing to do it, though Ugost is definitely closest) while yelling "Take the reins!"

Combat will start! You must now roll initiative, thought since everyone was relying on their Perception this instance (the guards to notice anything suspect, and you to figure out what was going on outside, you'll be rolling initiative using Wisdom (Perception) (except Ugost who can roll normally, or even use wagon proficiency if he has it and takes the reins).

Rummynose is the name of the horse pulling the wagon. It is very much a regular horse. I also noticed I forgot to link the vehicle rules (my bad), so I've edited my start of round post to include them, but here they are again for ease of reference.. Basically, all is required of you is using a bonus action to make the vehicle move or stop moving. There doesn't seem to be any rolls necessary unless you encounter some sort of difficulty.

OOC:
This is a great idea, however, the nearest horse is currently 60 ft. behind you. The problem is that the way chase mechanics work, the target will be left behind, then catch up to you, then be left behind again, then catch up again... This makes using a spell where you must remain within 30 ft of the target at all time a bit difficult. Sadly, the current situation will require a different action, but I do love when players come up with creative solution like that, so I hope this minor setback will not discourage you from coming up with clever ideas like that in the future. Ugost is currently looking for someone else to take up the reins, so perhaps that could be an option?

The guards were not expecting you to jump, so they won't do anything to stop you. They'll simply continue doing what they did last round. The remaining guard up front will attempt to attack the driver, Zariana, and the two guards further back will attempt to attack your wagon in order to damage it enough to force you to stop.

Pretty much only bedrolls and your fellow party members...
May 10, 2024 5:39 pm
Ugost notes the guards all pull back and gages whether to jump to Scarf's aid or just switch to ranged attacks.
OOC:
Well we already threw Scarf at them . . . who next?
Question while waiting my turn
None of the guards damaging are close to the wagon so are they damaging it by riding up then retreating or something? (if so do we get Attack of Opportunity as we are just standing around?) Or ranged attacks?
May 10, 2024 5:49 pm
OOC:
Remember that your wagon's momentum makes it move 20 ft. at initiative 20 at the start of each round. So the guards get close at the end of a round, attack your wagon, then you move a bit away (and move further away later in the round). Since they're not the ones moving away from your wagon, you cannot perform attacks of opportunity here.

As for attacking the guards or their horse, there are always spells, ranged attacks, or readying a single melee attack when they get in range. Yeah, this yo-yo effect is a bit weird and annoying, but it's a result of how combat works and a quirk of the initiative system.
May 10, 2024 9:46 pm
OOC:
if I'd wanted to light bed rolls on fire and chuck it at the horses, what would I have to roll? And what would the success of the 'attack' be dependant on?
May 10, 2024 11:00 pm
OOC:
Oil would help.
May 10, 2024 11:19 pm
OOC:
Indeed, lighting something on fire is not exactly easy, especially if it wasn't prepared to be lit up. But to resolve the action, I'd say the free use item action could be used to take out your flint and tinder and light up a bedroll, then an action could be used to throw the bedroll, I'd say a ranged attack. Then I'd give the rider a DEX save using your maneuver DC to see if he gets blinded or perhaps hindered, though the fire damage would not kick in until next round as the bedroll would need time to really "take".

Of course, if you had a spell that stipulated that it ignites unattended objects, that might work faster, but of course, it might make more sense to use it against the guards...

Finally, even without lighting it on fire, a bedroll thrown in the face of a rider could potentially blind him momentarily, or maybe even trip the horse, giving you some relief.
May 11, 2024 12:19 pm
OOC:
well in that case...
Zaiashi picks up one of the bed rolls and throws it at closest rider.
OOC:
that is not scarfs
OOC:
sorry for the delays.
1d20+dex mod?
May 11, 2024 12:25 pm
OOC:
Yes. If you miss the rider but hit the horse's AC, I'll have the bedroll hit the horse instead, which might still help.
May 11, 2024 1:29 pm
OOC:
unroll it and throw it over the horses face to blind it
May 11, 2024 7:42 pm
Psybermagi says:
OOC:
unroll it and throw it over the horses face to blind it
OOC:
that sounds like a great idea.
Also, those horses look nighty tired from here. I'm sure they appreciate the chance for a nap.
OOC:
for... Gosh darn it... Maybe someone should just throw me at the guards 😅

Zaiashi switches tactics and feebly throws a bedroll out of the wagon which makes Belton exclaim "Hey! My contraband!"

Ugost prepares a strike on the guards...
OOC:
@Zariana: right now, controlling the wagon only requires the use of your bonus action, no rolls are required. This still frees your regular action for something else, like casting a spell.
May 12, 2024 10:08 pm
Zariana, skilled as she apparently is with the horse and cart tosses another firebolt at the guard heading up to take a swipe at her.

Your attack hits the horse (not sure what it was listed as Cha Save), so you can roll your damage (also, you do not have the rare version, rare versions of spells can be given as reward and found as treasure).
May 13, 2024 11:07 pm

Yeah, I just cut and pasted the spell description.

Okay, wow, well, that's one horse taken care of. It falls to the ground taking its rider along with it.

Scarfs is up next!
May 13, 2024 11:58 pm
Scarfs again tries to dismount the rider and take control of the beast. (If I need dice roll. Feel free to wild with them.)
May 14, 2024 1:53 am
No roll needed, but the guard must succeed at a STR Save versus your Maneuver DC. Okay, I still have no idea what your Maneuver DC is, but I rolled so low, he falls (I guess I can always roll his DEX save to see if he falls prone). You now have control of the horse.

Rolls

Guard's STR Save

DEX Save (for shits and giggles)

May 14, 2024 2:04 am
I don't know how a Maneuver DC is generated. I did originally roll a 17 + 2 DEX. Is that the maneuver DC number you're looking for?

Woot. Ride'm Pinto Away...

Nope. Your Combat Maneuver Save DC is 8 + Prof + STR or DEX mod.

So I assume you ride your horse to some spot next to the wagon now?
May 14, 2024 5:21 pm
GM: Ah. What would 'Prof' be? This isn't 5e with proficiency bonus. Would any skills play into that maneuver DC.

Yeah. Scarfs would keep the horse near the wagon as best as possible.
May 14, 2024 5:33 pm
Yes, it is proficiency bonus. I just shortened it. Garbuffel is up!
May 14, 2024 5:40 pm
Oh. I should have figured that out. LOL. Maneuver DC was 12.
May 14, 2024 8:17 pm

Garbuffel will miss the guard. Speaking of guard, seeing his las resort to stop you and have his companions on foot catch up to you is to stop your wagon, he'll once again try to damage it. And he succeeds by inflicting another 6 points of damage to it.

Depends on how you proceed. Normally, it would use WIS, but if you tried slowly removing the spear using steady hands instead DEX would have worked well, if you used your academic knowledge to try and avoid nicking any arteries or nerves in the area INT could have worked, etc. Still, the 17 rolled alone is more than enough.
Zaiashi removes the spear form Belton's leg. "Thanks. With the wagon shaking like that, I was starting to feel every bump we took in my leg."

@ ChrSch: You can heal him next round.

@ Alepous: That's a critical hit, you can re-roll your damage and add it to the total. Also, you might want to add your relevant bonuses to your rolls, this will help your character stay relevant, especially at later levels...
Zariana drives the wagon away and manages to hit the remaining guard with 6 points of fire damage. Scarfs is up next!
May 18, 2024 9:31 pm
Scarfs sees the other rider and decides to race ahead to the wagon on its left side to escape it or lure it closer to the wagon to be attacked. She will even momentarily pass the wagon as she heads around the side of it on 'Pinto'. She plans to get away with Pinto as a prize. She leaves a trail of red trailing from her as she speeds Pinto on.

She is sure the dismounted guard will have an embarrassing story about a redhead woman that dismount him and stole his horse. He probably can't say word about her light green eyes as he never caught her glance much less her face.

Her fear of the horse is getting replace by the excitement of it surging forward. You could see a large grinning smile on her. It's not so hard. She is leaning heavy on it to the front. She can't help but feel it surging forward which is what she wants too. Scarfs is really taking in this new experience. It is a good thing Pinto is a well-trained horse.

She knows Pinto would want an apple. Maybe she will try to feed it one. Maybe. It can't bite her here riding on it. Scarfs really doesn't know how to take care of a horse.

Rolls

shortbow damage - (1d8)

May 24, 2024 4:02 pm
So Vuraz aims for the horse and bloodies it with one well-aimed arrow. Zariana wounds the rider with her spell, and Scarfs shows off her horse-riding skill... Where did she learnt to ride like that? Finally, a well-aimed stone from Garbuffel convinces the guard to break off his pursuit (he's only at 1 HP left and reasons he can no longer stop you alone).

With this fight over, you gain your Milestone and advance to Level 2! After putting some distance between you and Northminster, you'll be able to take a long rest if you feel like you need it (do not forget to consume Supplies if you do).
May 24, 2024 7:07 pm
Scarfs might be a natural for riding horses but most of the credit goes to Pinto probably. Seems it knew what to do. Jumping the guy off was all Scarfs.

While we go for a rest, Scarfs asks and learns how to take care of Pinto. Pinto is better than a bought horse, as it comes with gear. GM: Does it have some horse feed and such with it? Saddle bags? Apple?
GM: How well marked is Pinto? Does it or it's gear scream Northminster?

Obviously, Scarfs plan to ride Pinto the rest of the way.

Scarf's has a Two-Person Tent and Bedroll for the night. Also has a Lantern & Oil if it is needed. Scarfs avoids looking directly at people when the night comes. She seems sensitive that way. During the day, she doesn't seem to care.

"Boy. Wasn't that an exciting get away." She can get out a Mess Kit and enjoy her rations.

It certainly was. I do hope it will go better in the future. Here, I can help you.
May 26, 2024 4:45 pm
Encouraging the group to move the wagon to a point that it will be hidden before backtracking and hiding their trail he returns to help out. I am less familiar with these but know a bit about animals Ugost offers to help unharness and picket the horse. He ensures it has some water before following up with access to grazing and/or feed.

That was not a good way to leave a town. The guards will return and report so soon the town will know the general area we are heading towards. We need to keep moving or get off the road. Trouble is Belton is now associated with us and they may take out their frustration on him.

What do you say Belton, what will you plan to do now?

GM: Does it have some horse feed and such with it? Saddle bags? Apple?
GM: How well marked is Pinto? Does it or it's gear scream Northminster?
May 27, 2024 5:34 pm
Yes, it is quite obvious this horse belongs the Northminster's city guards. It does not have any sort of feed or provisions; the guards were not exactly planning on chasing you for days, they probably expected to quickly apprehend you and drag you back to Northminster (that and they just hopped on the horses to come after you, its not like they took time to pack or anything).
The good news is that the horse is well-trained, and if you leave it unattended, it will make its way back to Northminster all on its own.
May 27, 2024 6:08 pm
Scarfs lets other mostly take care of the horses and such. "Going to need new riding gear for this baby besides feed." as she lightly pats the side of Pinto. "Finder. Keepers. I want Pinto." as she has named it.

"I think we can afford a night here. Besides the horses do need rest time." as she looks over to Pinto.

Scarfs plays. With an arcane word and few hand motions, she looks very much like the Northern that she stole Pinto from, "Yes. Scarfs can have Pinto." and a moment later she looks back to herself. Yes. Scarfs just casted a spell. It appears she has the ability to cast arcane magic like a wizard. You might suspect that is probably all she can do. But can be a rather handy trick. And she is rather good at portraying what she creates with much practice.

Belton quips as Zaiashi tends to his wounds. "You know, originally, I was thinking we could swing by Ringwood and Blackford..." the halfling scratches his chin "...that's looking to be a terrible idea."

He then turns to Scarfs and her query about "Pinto" which is a name the horse does not recognizes yet as being its new name... "Don't worry, I have my own provisions, including some extra feed in the wagon for Rummynose, but the horses should be able to graze for most of the way, so feeding them shouldn't be much of a problem."

After spending some time while there is light to secure resources and increase his knowledge of the plants and animals of the surface world. When gathering he chats a bit with Zaiashi and talks about his life in the dark caverns below the surface and asks questions about Zaiashi's background.

When Ugost returns he spends a moment to ensures their wagons tracks are hidden as well as possible..

What are the chances the town lets this go? There is now way a wagon can outpace a currier or more guards on horseback. Do we need to avoid civilization for a while? If we cant enter Ringwood and Blackford can we still get into contact with someone to help us recover our memories? he asks in general but focuses his attention on Belton, hoping the merchant might offer some insight.

Ugost is not terribly concerned with being wanted or even recovering his memories but it is annoying as it limits his travel options and he really want to express his un-gratitude towards whomever helped abduct him. However he is fine with simply leaving the area but does want to help Belton before moving on.

Zariana sits next to the fire and pulls a book out from a pouch on her belt. Then she takes a small quill out and begins to jot note down, thoughts that occurred to her after their reawakening, any memories that might have bubbled up since then. Skills and tasks she feel comfortable volunteering for and comments she's made. It would seem to anyone reading over her shoulder as if she was looking for clues that might be hidden inside her own mind to some kind of mystery. Of course to anyone reading over her shoulder her diction and scripts are both archaic and largely unintelligible although the quality of her handwriting is impeccable.

"Does anyone recall how they ended up in the prison?" She asks as they're beginning to bed down, "I do not and I find that unsettling."
Jun 12, 2024 4:02 am
No, and the loss of the memory is not a bother so much as what I was made to do while under control of others. Though the one creature was slain I doubt that is the extent of whatever power gained control of us. However the total lack of any clues as to whom or what was manipulating us makes the next step a bit of a problem.
Jun 12, 2024 4:03 pm
"I doubt anyone can help in Ringwood or Blackford. though I might be able to unload my bedrolls there and make a profit..." Belton rubbed his hands together at the prospect... "Oh, your memories, yes. Well, as I told you earlier when we met, I think the only one who can help is Granny Appleseed. But she lives all the way into the Weirwoods. Odd place those woods too, but hey, you want those memories back, right?"
Jun 13, 2024 8:13 am
"Of course I want my memories back! Don't be ridiculous..." says Vuraz with classic dwarf pompous speech as he watches the wood burning. He is also unsettled of what he did, who he was before. He hopes that he did not do anything bad, he does not feel a bad person.

https://i.imgur.com/0qgrdTm.jpeg"I rather think we would all enjoy our memories back." Zariana says looking up from her notes and a quick self portrait. "We cannot very well flit about the countryside with no clue who we are, who our friends were and who our enemies might be."

"And before we begin moralizing or justifying our past actions we were all in prison slated for execution." She waves a hand dismissively, "Very well, sacrifice. The point is someone with access to considerable resources put us there and did not wish for us to get out of there alive."

Zariana closes her book, "It is likely that they are quite put out at this very moment and will in all likelihood be gathering the forces required to put us back behind those walls or more directly into an early grave."

@ChrShr, the praying activity would be a Religion check, so you can add your Wisdom modifier to the total of your check, unless you can justify praying with another attribute.
Your first night is spent without any problems, you can regain your spell slots and missing HP. As you prepare to leave in the morning, you spot in the distance three horsemen coming your way. They are not coming from Northminster, but they are heading in that direction. They seem to have also spotted you and are coming your way, though they do not look hostile. You have a few moment to prepare yourselves before you can start to talk (or fight).

Yep. 'Note'. That is the specs I have written on the character sheet for Pinto too. Of course, wanted to up the HP but I didn't.

Proficiency +2, Maneuver DC 13, Passive Perception 10
Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5', one target. Hit: 1d6+1 bludgeoning damage
Innocently looking Scarfs with sad eyes calls out with an odd accent in her voice, "I'm no criminal! But the guardsman that secretly traded me for this beast should be. It is nice but not nearly as much as I traded for! It doesn't fly no matter how hard I try. Those mothers of pearls were dear to me." She portrays and innocent women with lacking knowledge taken advantage of.

"And now I hope that he suffers greatly to his superiors about losing his horse and whatever story he concocts."

She adds on, "But that is rule of trades, I can't get my mother of pearls back."

She attempts to direct all attention her way and make the party look more innocent.

"It went like this" She says from horseback and with a word to she changed into the guardsman. She then portrays a story of him taking advantage of her in trade for Pinto. She makes him looks rather sintered and threatening to force her to trade. "You see I had no choice, but a trade is final." She makes sure the guardsman image is close but not the same as the others she has seen.

"He knew among my peoples that is the way. Our people seal agreements with images." She makes it appears she is from someplace distant. A foreign culture.
OOC:
Scarfs does what she has done for so long. She portrays another person. Just not the normal ones she has done before. She should get Oscars for her work. Scarfs is an actress (Charlatan) among other things. She still favors "Mistress Morgana". Who knows, who she portrayed while in the cult. She doesn't remember. She has been more herself among the party. Party has already seen her do a similar trick to this.

Jun 24, 2024 5:48 am
Zaiashi bites his tongue while listening to Scarfs then interjects, "We have been on the road for a while but have not seen anyone out of place. Are we in danger from those criminals?"
Jun 24, 2024 2:29 pm
Zariana nods, "We've only been here for the night but the road has been quiet m'lord." She says showing the officer some deference, "Is it safe from where you've come?" Zariana asks pointing back up the road, "We'd really rather not run into a bunch of bandits."
Jun 24, 2024 8:25 pm
The three riders are a bit surprised by Scarf's "sob story", they sort of only half-listen to what the rest of the group is saying... Surprisingly enough, one of them seems sympathetic though. "If you give us your name, we might be able to see about getting your mother of pearls back..."

He gets nudged by the other two riders who take out their bows, point them at you, and glare at their more gullible companion. "We're going to have to ask you all to drop your weapons and come with us back to Northminster..."

Seeing his other two companions, the gullible one also takes out his bow, but is obviously confused as to what is actually going on...

This sounds like initiative time!

Seems that maneuvers replace regular attack actions. Flurry of blows are attacks performed as bonus actions. No checks seems to be required for the disarm maneuver outside the opponent's Saving Throw (unless I'm misreading things, but I really can't find anywhere to you must roll to attack with it). If the maneuver is successful, you inflict 1 point + your STR modifier (though since you are an Adept, I assume you can use your DEX modifier instead). So you can go ahead and roll your two unarmed strike, I'll roll the scout's save against your maneuver DC.

You cannot disarm with your flurry of blow as those are bonus attack actions and not "standard" actions. I know, it's confusing and frustrating at first, I played a monk myself, had to go through this whole "you can't do that" explanation as well. Maneuvers replace one or more "standard" attack actions (specifically stated as coming from the Extra Attack class feature). Bonus attack actions thus cannot be used for maneuvers as they are not "standard" attacks but rather a bonus action. Yeah, apparently in 5e (and I assume a5e as well), there is this world of difference between an attack action and an attack performed as a bonus action (or reaction for that matter)... So right now, your flurry of blow is used to punch one of the scouts. The second one hits, so you can go ahead and roll your unarmed damage.

"Ain't much we can do for him in the state we're in. We better ride back to Northminster and report that we've found their dangerous criminals!"

With this, the riders will move away. One will move 80-ft. along the road, the other, having to take an action to put out the fire will do only 40-ft.

The battle is technically over, unless you want to take pot-shots at the fleeing riders?
Jul 19, 2024 3:43 am
Zariana twists the weave and mutters something under her breath as a ghostly pale green hand takes as swipe at the more injured of the two of the riders.

Before turning to the others, "We need to go, and straight away." She puts a hand on her leg which is still bleeding and winces.

"Do you think we have time for that?" asks Vuraz looking at the unconsious guard at his feet.
Jul 19, 2024 1:55 pm
I dislike speaking of this but the hardest part of hiding our tracks are the horses and cart. If we abandon them we can hide better but then they will likely capture Belton. With two horses we may be able to transfer all to cargo to them and abandon the cart. Or perhaps fins someone to sell it to.

Turning to the merchant he asks I thank you again for your help but by accompanying us you are putting yourself in danger. What do you wish to do?
Jul 19, 2024 9:49 pm
Zariana leaves a frostbite on the leg of the wounded rider as souvenir as she realizes none of her companions are interested in shooting at the fleeing riders...

"Mother did not raise no quitter! A liar and a cheater perhaps, but certainly no quitter! Besides, would you guys know where to go without me? Also, if I stick with you, you now have three horses, do not forget I have Rummynose to help carry even more supplies." Belton exclaims. "That's a shame, that was a nice wagon... I'm going to miss it."

As he watches the riders disappear in the distance, he exhales a long breath as if he had been holding it in. "Well, that confirms the worst I had in mind. So, how about a change of plans?" The smuggler points out into the North Riding grassland. "There's an old smuggler's route out there. It used to be a common way to dodge tariffs. Ever since that got lifted though, there's really no use for it left. I reckon it's probably an overgrown mess now, but it will let us stay away from any roadblocks that are bound to be set up along the roads. What do you all think?"
Jul 19, 2024 10:23 pm
With a flick of her red hair while rightly mounted on her sweet Pinto, "We can travel much faster without the cumbersome wagon. I guess leave the heavily wounded rider to be found. He is in no shape to follow us. He can watch over our wagon."

Her light green eyes are comparing her Pinto to the other new mount. Although she is getting rather used to Pinto. She shows no visible fear of Pinto at all. She even pets him.

Ugost strips the guard of armor, weapons, and anything useful or if value before bandaging his wounds and binding his arms.

Ugost wants to get the guards talking, confirm his origins then explain the story to him. He will highlight their rescue by the paladin and everything he can remember about the cult robes, the creature the paladin slew, etc. He doesn't care if the guard believes him but will stick to the facts and add much detail about the cult as possible. While he will emphasis that they were under the cults control he will not mention the memory loss. Stressing their innocence but frankly admitting their unwillingness to surrender he suggests the guards relay the story to their leaders.

If none of the party object he will proceed with the plan

Grrr. Scarfs could use a nice helpful short bow (Not longbow) and she is already in padded leather armor and has a shortsword to fight with. Don't suppose he had his salary in a convenient pouch. Scarfs likes the sound of coins jingling.
Quote:

Binding isn't necessary and better to leave him at least to defend his heavily injured self. Bandaged is cool.

I can't see a point of telling him a true story since he really will not care. Just kills time. They already decided that we are 'dead or alive'. And we have no proof. Whatever we are accused of it, it has to be horrible and cruel that really 'dead and not alive' was more the issue. And they could do a better portrait of Scarfs. (She holds a pose.)

Zariana binds her leg and apologizes to the unconcious guard. "I really am terribly sorry for all of this bother."

The Deva looks at Ugost, "We're best to get moving sooner rather than later, I don't imagine explaining ourselves to him will do much good."

Then she takes one of the new horses and follows Belton, "Best to get off the roads and disappear from sight as quickly as possible." She says once they're out of earshot of the guard before turning to Scarfs, "Next time when someone asks you if you've seen anyone suspicious the appropriate answer is simply no."
Jul 20, 2024 4:23 am
With a shrug, a very impressive and full body length event for the ooze, he acquiesces. I doubt they would believe it but all this chasing and fighting is not going to give them the impression I would prefer they have.

Once the guard is stable at least he will help transfer goods to the horses.

The shortsword as listed here has the Defensive (medium), Finesse, and Parrying tags, making it a DEX-based weapon. However, it does lack the Simple tag meaning it is a martial weapon. Since Cleric are proficient in only simple weapons, you would not add your proficiency bonus when attacking with a shortsword.

"Going through the North Riding, we'll have about 50 miles to do before reaching Halfpoint. With its history of smuggling, the residents over there will be willing to turn a blind eye to our activities. It will also be a good place to resupply if we need to. Then from here, we can cut through the Crawley Hills to reach the Weirwoods or we can go down to Thornbury and hope we arrive before words of your exploits at Northminster..."

OOC:
What typically seems to matter for distance travel is roads and terrain. We could potentially mess up the wagon tracks if we take it follow along the main road and then cut off on a secondary path along the way. Crossing the river is sure to muddy our trail too.
Jul 22, 2024 12:11 pm
OOC:
I doubt they can track a specific wagon on a road. The road is definitely the fastest way in reality but in D&D it doesn't usually matter other than potential obstacles. The problem with the road is it will likely have more patrols so it is easier to get spotted. I doubt they have great descriptions so a simple disguise would work for most. But Ugost kind of sticks out as there are few of his race. Off road is just to avoid patrols.

I assume we followed the road? If so would we not be on the east side of the river now? What is the map scale? We traveled at a fast pace the first day but we pulling a wagon so ... 16-24, minus late start, miles from Northpoint then whatever we have already traveled today . . . .?

Each hex is 5 miles. You're technically still in the same hex as Northminster (probably very close to its border, remember that Zariana had steered away from the main road after the flight from Northminster and its ensuing combat).

shall we set if we can can cross the river or would that be to favorite at this point? I want to get as far from town as possible without getting speed again.
Splitting up might be the best way to hide out tracks as they would know the number of horses we now have.

I'm going with what the scenario assumes (50 miles puts you either at Northminster or one of the adjacent hexes on the horizontal axis, although, now that I check the map more closely, you could have also crossed the river...), if you want to be further away, I'm fine with that, but you'll most likely have more than 50 miles to make before reaching Halfpoint.
Belton scratches his chin. "The roads are going to be risky, expect patrols and blockades. Some of you can disguise yourselves, as I've noticed, but the rest of you can't. That plus we must keep in mind that we now have two horses with Northminster's markings. I assume we could split up, but that would mean I'd guide one group while the other uses my map, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'd like to have insurance that you'll make it back with my map."
OOC:
There's also the fat that I'd rather avoid making two Journeys for 2 separate groups. Having one group resolve a combat encounter or an exploration challenge will be a bit annoying for the group that only got a scenery or social encounter instead...
Jul 23, 2024 2:50 am
I say we move on as a group and do our best to hide or disguise the NorthMinster markings. Covering the brands, removing any buckles or such on the tack.
Jul 23, 2024 3:41 am
I agree on the party movement as a group. I don't see much to do about the two horses. (We just don't have stuff with us to really do anything about them. Need to get to a town where we can purchase stuff to disguise them. Scarfs in the end probably have to give up Pinto.) For sure off-road movement. Hope for the best.
Jul 23, 2024 3:44 am
OOC:
If we already crossed the river there is no point in heading to Halfpoint, but rather we should go to Ringwood.
But if we are stil on the west bank of the river the smugglers trail sounds best
I am fine either way, just clarifying expectations that with mounted guards 5 miles is not that far so in the future we would want to stop much further than that if we stick to roads. Cross country where there is no set path a couple miles is a lot of area to cover and would be sufficient for us to feel safe I think.

Ugost wonders, somewhat uncertanly, that perhaps the marking on thwe horses could be changed or removed, by blade or flame, then healed? The sadles and bridle should also have their identifying marks and colorations removed or hidden if possible.

Zaiasgi could heal the horses if someone were to burn of their brandings.
And less patrols sounds good, at least until we're a little better equipped.
Jul 25, 2024 3:46 pm
"If we pack horses with supplies, yeah then we should be able to hide most markings with the stacked supplies. And that should last, well, as long as the supples last... Maybe even more reason to resupply along the way."Offers Belton as suggestion.

"Hey, we can even pack up a few bedrolls if we really want to hide those markings... So, anyways, 3 against 1 for heading down the old smuggler's route? Looks like majority wins, even if not everyone voted... Oh, and you might want to wake up sleeping beauty in the wagon before we abandon it, unless one of you feels like giving a piggy-back ride."
Jul 27, 2024 3:31 pm
Zariana nods and heads to wake up our sleeping guide. "Oi," she says giving his shoulder a shake, "we need to move and move fast." Then she grabs as many of the bedrolls as she can and loads them on the back of one of the horses so it hides any markings.

Belton takes one last look at his wagon and sighs. "As much as I'd like to, we're abandoning it much too close to Northminster. It's much to risky to attempt to retrieve it at this time. Maybe later once our names are all cleared, in the meantime, I guess I'll just have to ... ah, huh... borrow a new one."
Jul 28, 2024 4:35 pm
Any chance of selling or loaning it to a local then picking it up later? Better than abandoning it and having it destroyed or scavenged
Jul 28, 2024 4:45 pm
"Oh, sure, if I head back to Northminster, I'm sure I'll find a buyer there, but of course, that would be unwise given the current circumstances... And just finding a random buyer on the road? I doubt it." Belton shrugs. "Listen, such is life, sometimes you get dealt a crummy hand, and when that happens you adapt. I've crawled my way back from worse before, so I reckon I should be fine. I mean I still have Rummynose with me." He pats Rummynose's nose as he speaks that last part, prompting the horse to nod as if in agreement.
Jul 28, 2024 4:50 pm
With another shrug Its your wagon. I just thought a trader such as you would be able to work out something. What farmer wouldn't be overjoyed at an opportunity to get such a good wagon. Sell well below market value or spin a tale of needing to trade off the normal lanes and leasing it to the farmer, payable upon recovery. You don't come back, he pays nothing, you clear your name, and you get your wagon back with a bit of coin. But I guess it would slow us down. let's be off! and Ugost heads off-road towards where they need to be heading...

Alright, you all seem ready to start your journey. You have 50 miles of travel through North Riding before you can reach Halfpoint. The first thing you need to do is choose your Travel Pace. this will not only dictate how long it will take for the group to reach Halfpoint, but will also determine if you gain advantage or disadvantage on certain checks or if it is impossible to perform others.
Note that if you scroll further down, you'll also have rules for Forced Marches, and Tracking Your Supplies...

North Riding is a Tier 1 Rolling Grassland which gives you a base DC of 12 for any Journey Activities, you are also considered to be trying to not attract attention which is considered Multitasking (increasing the DC by 3 to a total of 15). Finally, note that Rolling Grasslands grant advantage on the Busk, Chronicle, Gossip, Harvest, and Rob activities, should any of you be interested on performing those.
Jul 29, 2024 8:32 pm
I suggest we move away from the wagon before leaving the main road. Use existing roads and side trails to hide our tracks for a while before leaving them for the wilds. We should alternate between walking (normal) and a light canter or jog (fast) when not being observed just to cover more ground. Once we leave the roads we should slow to a pace to try and hide our tracks for a bit. After that though I see no reason to not try and move faster. We can alternate fast and normal pacing to save our strength if needed. I can move well and do not require as much food as the rest of you

Athletic Scarfs aimlessly plays her simple flute while upon her faithful Pinto. Simple tunes but pleasant to the ear. Her light green eyes gaze ever so watchfully ahead and her long straight red hair dangles with the motion of traveling Pinto. Occasionally she injects in a more forceful Orcish tune in that she knows for some added flavor.

Her backpack & gear nicely packed on the back of Pinto as she has fair amount of it. Nicer not to have to haul full backpack and all that stuff around as she does own a personal two-person tent. Lucky her is still favoring her new expensive boots.

Still active her wonders what she has done to achieve a crude portrait of herself and dead or alive wanted listing. Acting her hopes that she hasn't tarnished her Noble Mistress Morgana image that she has been dearly working up. Hard to say what charlatan her has schemed and done. Lost her would so much gladly like to recall it all.
