Declan McBride
The crisp wind blowing in off the Atlantic reminded everyone that winter was just around the corner. As you all make your way through the dock warehouses, the wind periodically slaps you with it's chill touch as you step into open alleys. The docks are dark now, normal men have gone home for the day, but your days are just beginning.

The boss Declan McBride demanded you all meet him at his main warehouse, and he stressed that it was urgent. Declan wasn't one to issue commands like that. He was the kind of boss that would "ask" you to do something. Everyone just knew that when he "asked", if you didn't do what he said you'd have bought a one way ticket to the bottom of the ocean. Declan demanding, that could mean only one thing. The boss had found the leverage he needed to make his move against the Sicilians.

As you approach the warehouse, you see a couple of Declan's men loading some sad case into the trunk of a car. Following the trail of blood from where the men had dragged the dead man, you wind through shipping crates packed full of hooch of one form or another to a small corner of the warehouse. A single light illuminates a table that has spattered blood, pliers, hammers and what look to be more than one tooth scattered across its surface. All signs of someone being "talked" to. Out of the ordinary is a small unmarked bottle of hooch sitting to one side of the table.

As you enter the area, you see Declan standing at a shipping table close to the wall. He is methodically and slowly washing blood from his hands in a massive glass bowl full of water. Already the water had taken on a murky quality. Declan calls to you without looking back. Thank yous, fer comin... I'll be wit you in a moment. There was no need to say thanks. There was no choice in the matter.

Manny Zeigler, a portly and balding lawyer in his forties, stood in the dimly lit warehouse, beads of nervous sweat forming on his forehead. He wore a crumpled suit that seemed to struggle against his ample frame. His thinning hair clung desperately to the sides of his head, emphasizing his receding hairline.

"Ah, h-hello there, Mr. McBride," Manny stammered, adjusting his tie nervously. "I, uh, received your message. Wasn't expecting to be summoned to a place like this. Everything, uh, alright?"

Declan turned to regard the lawyer. Blood specks covered the mob boss’ face. He stared at Manny for a long moment, his expression impassive and unreadable. After what seemed like a minute of staring, Declan turned back to washing calling out again over his shoulder Fine.. Fine… Manny. Things are fine… better’n fine...

Lenny walks in expecting his brother to already be there. Mik had left earlier and so he wasn't around when Mr. McBride had told them to come here, but it was always both of them. it seemed that Mr. McBride wouldn't be asking them to kill today, cause it looked like someone had already died. Plus the lawyer was here and he was pretty sure that lawyer client confidentiality didn't extend to watching a killing.

'Was it little Mickey?'

The thought popped into his head and he did his best to quickly dismiss it, he hadn't done anything to get Mr. McBride angry at them, at least not recently and Mr. McBride wasn't the type to kill Mickey for things he'd done, he'd kill Lenny if Lenny caused to much of a problem that was why he had to be cautious, especially around Mr. McBride's brother Jimmy.

"Hi." he said. it made sense to announce his presence after all he didn't think the Lawyer had seen him and the Lawyer was well it seemed he was quite nervous he looked like he might flee if he saw one of McBride's goons walking up behind him, and that's what he was at least in here a goon.

Ah, Lenny! You, uh, startled me there Manny stammered, his hand clutching at his chest. I-I didn't expect to see you around. He laughed nervously.

In a low voice he asked the newcomer
What's, um, what's going on? Why am I being summoned to this warehouse? You’re not gonna… he stopped short but the implication of question hung in the air like the smell of cabbage soup. Or was it the nervous fart that Manny managed to slip out as a silent one.

The lingering effects of cabbage soup from "Pyszny Pieróg," a Polish haven near his apartment, began to assert themselves, causing Manny to discreetly shift his weight from foot to foot. A quiet, involuntary murmur escaped him, accompanied by a wince. The ill-timed discomfort was a consequence of his frequent visits to the eatery, where a beautiful young waitress named Ania captured his attention.

Despite the savory allure of the cuisine, Manny found himself grappling with the consequences of his culinary choices at the most inconvenient of moments.

Declan McBride
"Alright, listen up…" Declan picked up a stool and pulled it from against the wall so that he could sit at the table and gestured for the group to grab similar stools set to the side of the room. Putting his elbows on the table you seen the blood stains that rim his rolled up shirt sleeves. Declan didn’t own many shirts that didn’t have those telltale blood stains in odd bands down the sleeves.

"Two nights ago, Johnny brought somethin to my attention." Johnny was a shrewd old Irishmen who ran one of the renowned speakeasy The Peach Club. Declan looked at each member off the group as he talked, emphasizing some underlying gravity of his words. "Johnny says that a man dropped off two cases o’ new booze to the back door… He says the man didn’t ask nothin fer it… Just said he’d be back later to talk afters Johnny sampled the hooch…" Declan paused and smacked his lips slightly. An annoying habit the boss had when he was excited about something. "Johnny took the man fer a fool, but took the cases inside. Now you all know how Johnny gets… An you know I’ve asked him not to get that way no more… So Johnny gave a sample o the hooch to Ginger and Toots. They’s said it was good and so Johnny start’s sellin it…" Again with the lip smacking. "Johnny says he’s never seen anythin like it. People ate the stuff up… They just kept comin’ back fer more n’ more. Johnny says he can’t walk two steps now without gettin asked when he’ll have more o’ the stuff. I asked aroun’ and learned that one o’ Whelan’s guys made the drop at the Peach. I had a meetin’ with the delivery man this evenin."

Declan paused and impassively looked at the group, but a glint in his eye belied his excitement. "It seems Whelan has a new line on this whiskey. It’s a brand new distillery in some backwater ho-dump. They apparently have been makin’ tons o’ this stuff with a banner crop they had. Least ways, Whelan thinks he’s to be the sole distributor o’ this new whiskey." Declan paused again, smacking his lips and looking around. "So… I’ve a simple task for yous. Yous’re to go straight to the source. We’re to politely tell these hillbillies that they no longer sell to Whelan, they sell to us. Manny, yer to try to set up the contract. I want this business to have all the red tape around it. Lenny n’ Mickey’re to be there if people need persuadin…" Declan turned to look at Mickey directly, "Now listen, Mickey. I knows you’ve had some dealins with some people in the past… but that needs to stay in the past. This booze is the ticket we need to get into New York, Atlanta, wherever. We get this booze an’ the Sicilians… they’ll be beggin us to come to their hometowns. The hillbillies that started this distillery… It’s the Carmody brothers…" Declan paused, staring at Mickey.

Finally, Declan reached reached over and put his hand on Jimmy’s shoulder. "Jimmy. I can’t go on account of the meetings I have to call. You need to go to show these hillbillies we mean business." Turning back to the group as a whole, Declan said, "So… you tell me what you need. You leave tonight. Oh, an I had Johnny send over some of the hooch. I want you all to taste it, so we all know what we’re lookin to secure." Declan gestured to the bottle on the table.

Mickey have shown nearly no emotion since he came back from the war - not that he was before, but still.
Unlike most of McBride's lot when he addressed them personally, he never even flinched; until now.
Until he heard that cursed name - Carmody.
His lips tightened ever so slightly and his hand twitched, as he was barely able to stop it from involuntarily moving towards his neck - reaching for the bullet that a certain Damian Carmody gifted him in a not-so-nice way.
"Fine Boss." he simply said, trying not to glare daggers at Mr McBride - the last thing he needed was to be taken off this job just because he showed any sign of emotion once.

A nearly imperceptible movement - a cower? flinch? - hits as Declan's hand comes down on Jimmy's shoulder. 'Did Declan feel that?' he wonders. "Sounds like an easy job, Declan," Jimmy says with a nod to the other McBride. "Do we know how many men these Carmody brothers got workin' for 'em?"

He considers his brother's question. "If the Whelans feel like defendin' their claim, and we need to ask 'em real nice-like, maybe it would be best for us to put some tommy's in the trunk, as incentive."

Boss, these hillbillies won't dance to the tune of Tommy guns. We need finesse, not firepower. Plus, those guns, they're a drain on the coffers, ya know? We could be investin' smarter. Maybe a subtler approach, eh?

As Manny speaks, he wipes his sweaty brow, beads glistening under the dim, smoky light. Thoughts of cabbage soup-induced indigestion plague his mind, and he fears letting out a potentially disastrous shart.

Manny reaches across the table and grabs the bottle of hooch and swiftly takes off the cap and pours himself a shot.

He looks at it suspiciously before throwing it back.

Here’s to the deal. he says wheezing from the harsh alcohol.

"Who asked you, Manny? The guns wouldn't be for the hillbillies anyway, but for the Whelan men. They might come packin' heat, and I'd like to see you finesse your way out of that. Unless yer used to makin' deals with them?"
Dec 19, 2023 7:13 am
Jimmy, I ain't makin' no deals with the Whelans. Declan, you know me, right? I've been with you through thick and thin. I'm no two-faced weasel dealin' behind your back.

Manny's voice quivers with nervous energy as he pleads his innocence, eyes darting anxiously between Jimmy and Declan. Beads of sweat multiply on his forehead, and the fear of facing Jimmy's wrath amplifies the indigestion-induced discomfort in his gut.

Look, fellas, Tommy guns might sound like thunder, but with these hillbillies, it's like bringin' a sledgehammer to a delicate tea party. We need finesse, not a symphony of bullets. I'm just sayin', let's use our heads and find a way to navigate this mess without causin' a storm we can't weather. But, hey, if that's what you want, okay. I'm just the guy offerin' his two cents here.

Manny, nervously glancing around, continues,

I ain't sayin' go unarmed, but we gotta be smart about it. his hand casually patting the .32 revolver nestled in his pocket.

Lenny looks at the bottle, "You Sure... he asks, looking at his brother and Jimmy and wondering if they're gonna take this taste testing thing to far, it does after all seem like a good excuse to be drunk on the job if one was ever looking for one, maybe even the Lawyer would find himself downing bottles, it'd be hard to say but it wouldn't surprise him.
"Should Not Be Intoxicated During Job?" Lenny says making it sound like he's asking a question when really he's making a statement, hopefully at least Mik will pick up on it.
However he does take a sip from the bottle, because he's curious will he really be able to tell it apart from other stuff?

Declan looks at Jimmy for a moment before nodding slightly. The driver, sadly, was only able to tell me about the Carmody brothers before he had to leave. The body being loaded into the car! Tommys won't hurt as long as they stay in the car until their needed. But Manny is right, the easiest way to get us to New York is just to have the Carmody's sell to us in a sole business arrangement. Failing that, you may need to incent them. As a last effort you may need to figure out how they make booze this good... And you all should know just how good..
OOC:
Declan will insist.

As you sip the liquor you feel the blooming warmth start to emanate from your throat. Opposed to other liquors, though, you feel the warmth seem to linger and flow throughout your body. As the warmth progresses, you feel a vibrantness, a wonderful feeling of energy and possibility that seems to loom right at your fingertips, ready to grasp.

The taste is tangy, almost citrus like with undertones of an odd flavor... something unique that you can't quite put your finger on but is somehow reminiscent of something...

Manny feels the discomfort of his polish dinner evaporate as for the first time in a long time, his stomach feels... good. No bloating, no pain, no nothing...

Jimmy feels invigorated. He didn't realize just how tired he was before. The monotony of his life ever pressing against his psyche had led to him just feeling exhausted, but now. For the first time in a long time, Jimmy felt like he was truly awake and fully aware.
