Chapter 5: Yes More Delays

Jan 12, 2024 2:55 pm
Having handled the situtation with the strange lovers, you continue to Ithaca via Sparta with haste. The men are generally prudent regarding gossip, but they can't help but wonder.

Is it nonsense from the twins?
Eh, Cassandra's a train wreck. I don't think she says anything serious.
Kouru saw something too, though, right?
He's a Spartan. Probably just mad we're not stabbing things and making stuff up.

Fortunately, the seas are reasonable, and you're able to continue without issue. As you mill about the ship, you see another Greek vessel coming your way, still a few miles off. You're unsure why, but at least they aren't flying any distress flags.
Jan 12, 2024 9:23 pm
Nikias approaches Iantha and Kouru - as this voyage continues, he finds them ever faithful and trustworthy allies as they float upon the sea. "We are not in need of contact with this ship, but it is possible they could have news from Greece. What do you think, Iantha, Kouru - should we engage them for conversation or stay our course?"
Jan 13, 2024 3:07 am
After spending some time on the towed fishing ship - more to get a little space in his own head and work for his hands than anything else - he'd look up from the bow of the ship where he was leaning and holding a half-chewed piece of dried fish. As he was addressed the scout would turn and nod in salute, glancing at the amazon before speaking "Well, sir, it's tradition to share news with other ships in passing. Good way to be on the alert for plagues and pirates as well. Speaking of which..." sparing a squint toward the horizion at the approaching ship he'd reach down and absently handle the knife at his waist "... might be a good idea to quietly call the lads to arms, just in case."
Jan 13, 2024 6:33 am
"I'm of the same mind. It never hurts to be prepared, just in case."

He signals a nearby captain and gives him the word to prepare the men for a possible fight.

Alas, no Greek fire left. But it had been a decade.
The crew remains cautiously optimistic as the other ship approaches. It doesn't give any indication it wants to stop and chat, but it's still headed straight for you. You notice the sails are not rigged properly at all, almost halfway done for weather far different than this.
Jan 16, 2024 3:24 am
It was a small thing, but he was proud to have contributed something to his father's design: a youth spent aboard various ships had caused a far younger Kouru to suggest a simple quartet of small holes throw which two loops of rope might be tied, making the perfect place to stand. And stand he did, feet resting squarely in their designed place, one hand clutching the top of the mast while the other shields his eyes. Peering down toward the other vessel he'd frown before calling down to the rest of the crew "Captain?" came his carefully directed call before the experienced sailor would slide down the mast to land grinning before his commander "Very respectfully, sir, dibs" his grin would widen as he'd lean in, whispering for the ears of his companions alone "I suggest we prepare for full honours with exactly half the crew. Full armour, full kit, blow a horn, the whole lot. That there is yet one more prize for the taking, they just don't know it." sneaking a look over his shoulder the scout would chuckle quietly, then wink "Might be we can even convince them to join us peacefully. Not like the Trojans have a city to return to"

"We'll make it so!" Nikias calls up to the man.

"Men, to arms and armour! I want 40 men standing on deck prepared for a fight, now! Turn into the ship's path - we shall run abreast and parlay or board in style, depending on their answer!"

He scans for their leader, or the largest and toughest amongst them, and focuses upon them.

Snapping a quick salute the scout ducks below deck to snatch up his quiver and bow. Reaching down to toss his quiver over his shoulder he'd glance at Cassandra and pause "There may be a spot of trouble. Stay down here out of sight if you can, keep each other safe" before he'd shimmy up the ladder and back up the mast, the thought finally catching up with him "Pay attention to the cast in front of you, not how you'll bind the spearhead to the shaft" came the voice of his father from decades ago. He was already thinking of the pair as members of his household, not prisoners. Brushing the thought away he'd stand back in those stirrups he'd helped design, one hand on the mast and the other waving enthusiastically. "Ἀσπάζομαι!" he called across the water, just like every sailor in history hoping for news from home as he peers down toward the approaching ship "Ahoy!"

LOM, I didn't forget about you, the menfolk just passed the roll, so I figured I'd move along.
The wind settles and the Trojan ship pulls to a bobbing lull beside you. You see disorganized patches of soldiers scrambling into formation. Men on the rigging looking down in a panic. A few who managed to sleep through the alarm waking up in terror. And the captain, leaning over the edge of the ship as if to call to you, but looking over his shoulder with uncharacteristic fear.

And yet as you wait to meet them the air around you is eerily silent.

Every Trojan is frozen in place.

Jan 24, 2024 4:35 am
"A gorgon?!" Nikias hisses. "Look away men - do not pay the passengers on the ship any heed! Stare at your feet if you must!"
Jan 24, 2024 2:40 pm
Come now, no need to be cowards.

The voice is clear as crystal, and bitter.

My wings are bound and I am facing away. Release me, and I will ensure my parents grant you safe passage through the whirlpool Charybdis.
Jan 25, 2024 6:59 am
"Wings?" Nikias says quietly to those closest to him, thinking of the stories he's heard from sailors or wise-people alike. "Does anyone know what sort of creature this could be - if a gorgon or otherwise? We do not know how to approach this safely."

"What manner of creature are you?!" he calls out, "If you desire our help, deception will not be of aid to you!"
OOC:
I'm not sure if Nikias would know enough about Gorgons to think the description of wings doesn't fit. Is a roll needed here?
Jan 25, 2024 4:50 pm
OOC:
Nah, it's fine.
I am Euryale, the far-springer, she calls. Daughter of Ceto and Phorcys, though your kind calls mine "Gorgon." I was taken hostage by the Trojans as a weapon against the Greeks. I have broken all but one bond on my wings. Every soldier I demanded to free me was too weak to keep his gaze averted. Those who refused to try were punished.
Jan 26, 2024 2:03 am
"And should we free you, what is to keep you from setting your gaze upon my crew, my friends!?" Nikias hollars back.
Jan 26, 2024 4:01 am
Ha!

The laugh cracks like a whip across the water.

I have been trapped on this ship for three years. I am hungry and stone is not satisfying. My serpents allow me to see without my eyes, so you have my word I will keep them shut. As for devouring your crew, I am not so foolish as to violate the expectations of a favor.
Jan 26, 2024 4:16 am
"And this whirlpool you mention - Charybdis - it is an obstacle you can help us survive, if we help you!?"
Jan 26, 2024 3:00 pm
My parents can ensure you safe passage through the whirlpool.
Jan 27, 2024 1:17 am
Nikias looks to the others, "What do you think - is this worth the risk, or do we let the ship sail on?"
Jan 27, 2024 12:47 pm
While her face remains calm Iantha's hand tightens on her spear at the mention of being a coward.

'It's your ship, your crew, your call. If she is lying I can do my best to protect them, but gorgons are tricky foes
Jan 28, 2024 12:19 am
At the first admission of divine parentage the sailor's eyes would harden, and he'd made the leap from the spar holding their ship's sail over to that of the Trojan, hooking his foot in a line to grant stability due to the poor rigging. Looking down at his captain, then at the crew, he'd snarl out "They're all our prisoners now, captain. And it's a far better fate than they deserve." leaning over the edge he'd glower at apparent trojan captain, fury writ plain "Tell your men to throw down arms and be peaceful, and you'll live through this. And where. Is. She?"
OOC:
Edited, as I misunderstood
It was a simple matter to hope from one mast spar to the next, though it took a second for the scout to notice exactly what was going on. The feminine voice only confirmed what he saw: Stone. They're all stone. Punished by the Gods. "Well, only one thing for it" he'd mutter, stepping around the (obviously deeply inferior) trojan mast he'd slide down and cast his eyes about "Seems pretty obvious, captain. Nothing good ever came from denying a stranger aid, and I don't know any father whose fury would be unkindled by the thought of someone ignoring his daughter's cry for help"

Euryale chuckles. This crew is much wiser than my hosts were, thank you.

You come across the being sitting on a barrel, eyes shut, hands folded in her lap. She's stunning. Richly tanned skin, far more supple than what would expect after years at sea. Perfectly manicured nails and an athletic yet elegant frame. A simple green dress and a tattered, but lovely, satin cloak. And dozens of thumb-sized braids cascading just below her shoulders.

Except when you reach her, you see her as she is. You can tell her eyes are just a little too big, and you detect a scaly pattern to her skin. Her nails are sharp claws and her build is just a little too lanky. Her tattered cloak is a pair of wounded iridescent wings, like if a bat were portrayed in jewelry. And the braids, the snakes, pick up their heads one by one to follow your movements. She doesn't need her cursed vision to make you shudder.

But as she said, there is a metal bracket clamped between her wings, with a delicate locking mechanism that would be nearly impossible to undo backwards.

Nikias follows cautiously. "To have been kept here, three years, as a prisoner...that is a terrible fate. Need you no food, or water? How is that these men bound you like this in the first place? Perhaps they thought to use you as a weapon in the war only to have it turn badly for them. A fate deserved, perhaps."

He steels himself and reaches for the bracket, attempting to break it with raw strength. "It is no good," he says, "and I have no skill with locks." He wanders back to the petrified captain and checks him over, looking for keys.

There were great beauties to be found in the world of a military scout: the still silence of a misty dawn, the perfection of an arrow in flight, the flash of sun on the tail of a playful dolphin... "... the sunrise over Troy that first day... came into his mind - something beautiful, astounding... and tragic all together. Something that couldn't be properly grasped in the moment "There is more to it than just the plan, son" came the voice of his father "an anchor or an arrow head, a sword or a shield. Everything we create will leave its mark on the world"

Bending down he'd set calloused palms to the device, inspecting it delicately before looking from his companions to the captive "Captain, I can try to unlock it? With your permission, great daughter of the sea."

Kouru's jimmying reveals a weak spot that Iantha is able to exploit, freeing the gorgon from her final bond. A chill goes down her spine when the gorgon turns and, eyes still closed, smiles at Iantha. You think you see one of the snakes wink. She unfurls her wings, cracks her neck, and bows.

You have my gratitude. As soon as I have had something to eat, I will handle my side of the bargain.

And with a final smile that reveals too many teeth, she takes off into the air.

"Might keep their captain. Check and see if we or the crew recognize any of them. It's one hell of a story to bring back home, to be sure. What with one ship as a prize, and towing that little fishing ship, we've done quite well" Opening his eyes he'd grin at his captain, then wink "Going to have to call you Admiral soon"

"Has a nice ring to it, though it is not for me to assign such a title," Nikias says. "You are right to keep the captain - else our story may not be believed."

He commands his men to do away with most of the petrified bodies, offering them as tributes to the sea, but otherwise searching them for valuables before moving into the bowels of the ship to see what it may have been carrying.

He selects a minimal number of crew members to man the seized ship so that it may join theirs upon the journey home.

'I don;t know. Such creatures are fickle. I am used to hunting them rather than bargaining. Still she did not harm us. It is whether she keeps up her end.'

One of the wondrous things about taking a prize whole was cataloging and distribution: everybody got their share as decided by rank, which meant someone had to sit on deck under the supervision of the captain taking note of every jewel, every coin, every nail, and every cracker. It was a good way to sit in the sun and collect one's thoughts "Nothing good comes from angering a god, Captain." came his easy reply as practiced hands counted spans of ships rope "And only a fool would anger the child of a god, especially the child of the god of the sea when we're trying to sail home. Seems the kind of hubris the bards would sing of"
Feb 15, 2024 8:52 am

You continue on, your strange little armada in tow, thoughts wandering to the whirlpool Charybdis. Rather, the great monster Charybdis, who swallows the sea thrice daily. The otherwise calm waters begin to churn and bubble. How did you reach her so quickly?? Even with the speed of the gods, it'd be near impossible to row away from her gaping maw in time. Sinon's pleasant shanty fades into a wimper, then he yells.

There's no escaping the maw. Before his voice is drowned by the roar of the sea, Nikias shouts final orders to the men on the other ships, their scrambling effective against the maelstrom, as far as he can tell. Iantha tosses a rope to Chryseis and spins around just in time to yank Sinon away from collision with a barrel. Kouru hangs from the mast, knees buckling in anticipation of collision.

The wine-dark sea gapes before you and massive teeth glint like lightning in the remaining daylight. The ships flood with water, and your minds flood with thoughts of home, of peace....
To the Gorgon's credit, she promised you safe passage through the whirlpool. Not around it. You aren't sure how long you were unconscious, but when you wake, you find yourself on a soft green mattress. The temperature is mild and pleasant, and you're surrounded by the other crew on a bed of pristine sand, speckled with beautiful shells. Stunning birds and insects you don't quite recognize glide through the air. A low, bright, almost purplish fire crackles in a large ring about 100 feet away, and a couple dozen graceful maidens tend to food and those who have already woken up.

Behind you, the three ships are up on dry docks, and you can just make out the figures doing repairs. To either side, perfectly manicured topiaries of roses and exotic colored plants circle the courtyard, an odd yet aesthetically pleasing contrast to the dark rocky structures outside the border. And before you, shining balustrades of marble lace across the levels of a huge terrace, home to magnificent and foreign architecture.

Sitting bolt upright would bring a white-hot shock of pain seemingly through the roots of his hair to the base of his neck, and after a quick glance around the scout would lay back down, muttering "𐤄𐤉𐤀‎‎𐤊‎𐤁𐤋𐤀‎ 𐤀𐤌𐤉‎ 𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤀𐤉‎‎‎‎‎ 𐤏‎𐤏𐤕‎‎‎𐤀‎". Nikias grunts and his eyes flutter open. He finds himself...well, surprisingly comfortable. He sits up rubbing at his head and looking around. "Kouru," he says, seeing the nearby man sitting up as well. "What is this place? I had half thought we'd drown out there. I...don't remember anything after the maelstrom."

He looks to his other side and sees Iantha laying still peacefully asleep. He gets up, perhaps too quickly as the the world spins briefly around him. After steadying himself he quietly kneels next to the sleeping woman and shakes her gently. "Iantha," he says, "Wake up, are you alright?"

The Amazonian stirs briefly but continues to sleep. Meanwhile, two of the women approach. I am Gallia and this is my sister Hwiz. Welcome! Ceto and Phrocys have informed our lady that this need only be a brief pause in your journey. Your ships should be repaired by tomorrow. Have you need of anything? There is food and drink at the fire, and we can bring it here if you wish.

Sitting up as he was addressed the old soldier would pull himself upright with all the dignity he could luster, gawping at the image of unearthly beauty shown before his eyes before frantically dusting himself off. As his commander's speech finally registers he'd turn, snapping off a quick salute "Sir, first guess was Elysium, but my head hurts, so second guess was... not Elysium." his eyes would briefly flick back over, noting perfect golden tresses in spite of the sea winds "Present company indicates the possibility that we are in Elysium, but that apparently things hurt in Elysium. Which doesn't seem fair." He'd nod respectfully to their hosts and would then lean in toward his fellow warrior "Captain, we should pay them for the repairs. Guest-right is one thing, but this is extremely generous"

Chryseis comes back to Iantha with some food and crisp mineral water, offering her some. I'm glad we ended up in a safe place. It looks like a storm is coming.

With the men, Sinon keeps babbling happily until Mikros cuts him off. Hey, what time of day is it?

And indeed, as you all look around, you see that a few hundred yards outside the borders of this (admittedly large) city, things fade very quickly to darkness.
OOC:
Y'all can roll perception.

Nikias smiles as he sees Iantha awaken, then looks to the horizon.

No direct deity involvement, but you do see all the things.
The border of the city is dark as the depths of the sea. That's when it hits you.

It is the sea.

Mattresses of kelp on the ocean floor. Small schools of fish fluttering past like birds. A purple fire able to burn under water. Topiaries of roses, and coral, and the sharp rocks of ancient days.

Gallia smiles with genuine kindness. There is nothing to fear, brave warriors. Lord Hephaestus has taken great care over the aeons to preserve this site as a wedding gift for his bride. She does so love the waters of her birth, and it would have been a shame if this place were lost forever to its hubris. Rest assured you will be able to return to the surface with no ill effects. He is far more capable than a mere sculptor of automata.

Some of the girls giggle playfully and Gallia turns back to you. But I digress. Welcome to Atlantis!

Nikias gasps, "Atlantis? This place is amazing in many ways, though I can't say I've ever heard of it before. It must be well-protected indeed! We thank you for your hospitality, Gallia. May I ask, who is the sovereign of this city?"
May 29, 2024 5:42 am
Unfortunately the original inhabitants are long gone. Ages before your kin were born, this place was renowned for its advanced technology and elite society. Alas, infighting and pride were its downfall. The gods smote the city and it sank below the waves.

Now, it is inhabited by all of us,
She gestures to the other ladies and the men working the docks. Numerous spirits of the waters, and a variety of Lady Aphrodite's esteemed guests.
OOC:
A history roll of 15 or higher will allow you to have heard the basic legends, though most of that information is the same as what Gallia shared. You can roll history untrained at disadvantage.

OOC:
I had considered including some thoughts about hearing of the rumored city, glad I waited.

Rolls

Knowledge (History) (Int) - (1d20+1)

(11) + 1 = 12

The old scout would simply pause, then sit back down and accept the proffered plate. He'd blink very slowly several times at hearing that word, then look around for his two Trojan royals
Jun 7, 2024 3:24 pm
You're given time to eat, and the assurance that the Trojans (including the statue) are as safe as your other men. After a little while, Gallia and Hwiz return to invite you on a tour of the city before you meet with their lady - who is apparently Aphrodite
OOC:
For those who decline the tour...
Gallia nods and produces a small 2-layer stone from her belt pouch. She twists and clicks it a few times and a pale blue arrow appears on the face. This will point you in the direction of the palace when you are ready to join us. Please be present by dinner. This will fade to bright red over the afternoon. If you follow the directions without sightseeing, you should still have enough time left to get to the palace when this is dark red. Enjoy!
The depths of the ocean flicker with glimpses of the great beasts within. You see the automata continuing to work diligently around the fire and on the boats. You also notice that the topiaries form an aquatic hedge maze.
OOC:
For those who take the tour...
The ladies lead you up the massive stairs, worn down by countless ancient footfalls. There was no attempt to hide the destruction of the city. Repairs were made with contrasting materials, if they were repaired at all. Many sections have been taken over by corals and schools of fish, by new rock formations and plants. Yet instead of a jarring vision, it paints a humbling yet beautiful scene of unity between man and nature. Perhaps it is a parable, that man should not become so proud that he never looks outside himself.
OOC:
You can take any of the bold NPC's in the Meta thread with you to either route.
