Chapter 5: Yes More Delays

Come now, no need to be cowards.

The voice is clear as crystal, and bitter.

My wings are bound and I am facing away. Release me, and I will ensure my parents grant you safe passage through the whirlpool Charybdis.

"Wings?" Nikias says quietly to those closest to him, thinking of the stories he's heard from sailors or wise-people alike. "Does anyone know what sort of creature this could be - if a gorgon or otherwise? We do not know how to approach this safely."

"What manner of creature are you?!" he calls out, "If you desire our help, deception will not be of aid to you!"
OOC:
I'm not sure if Nikias would know enough about Gorgons to think the description of wings doesn't fit. Is a roll needed here?
Jan 25, 2024 4:50 pm
OOC:
Nah, it's fine.
I am Euryale, the far-springer, she calls. Daughter of Ceto and Phorcys, though your kind calls mine "Gorgon." I was taken hostage by the Trojans as a weapon against the Greeks. I have broken all but one bond on my wings. Every soldier I demanded to free me was too weak to keep his gaze averted. Those who refused to try were punished.
Jan 26, 2024 2:03 am
"And should we free you, what is to keep you from setting your gaze upon my crew, my friends!?" Nikias hollars back.
Jan 26, 2024 4:01 am
Ha!

The laugh cracks like a whip across the water.

I have been trapped on this ship for three years. I am hungry and stone is not satisfying. My serpents allow me to see without my eyes, so you have my word I will keep them shut. As for devouring your crew, I am not so foolish as to violate the expectations of a favor.
Jan 26, 2024 4:16 am
"And this whirlpool you mention - Charybdis - it is an obstacle you can help us survive, if we help you!?"
Jan 26, 2024 3:00 pm
My parents can ensure you safe passage through the whirlpool.
Jan 27, 2024 1:17 am
Nikias looks to the others, "What do you think - is this worth the risk, or do we let the ship sail on?"
Jan 27, 2024 12:47 pm
While her face remains calm Iantha's hand tightens on her spear at the mention of being a coward.

'It's your ship, your crew, your call. If she is lying I can do my best to protect them, but gorgons are tricky foes
Jan 28, 2024 12:19 am
At the first admission of divine parentage the sailor's eyes would harden, and he'd made the leap from the spar holding their ship's sail over to that of the Trojan, hooking his foot in a line to grant stability due to the poor rigging. Looking down at his captain, then at the crew, he'd snarl out "They're all our prisoners now, captain. And it's a far better fate than they deserve." leaning over the edge he'd glower at apparent trojan captain, fury writ plain "Tell your men to throw down arms and be peaceful, and you'll live through this. And where. Is. She?"
OOC:
Edited, as I misunderstood
It was a simple matter to hope from one mast spar to the next, though it took a second for the scout to notice exactly what was going on. The feminine voice only confirmed what he saw: Stone. They're all stone. Punished by the Gods. "Well, only one thing for it" he'd mutter, stepping around the (obviously deeply inferior) trojan mast he'd slide down and cast his eyes about "Seems pretty obvious, captain. Nothing good ever came from denying a stranger aid, and I don't know any father whose fury would be unkindled by the thought of someone ignoring his daughter's cry for help"

Euryale chuckles. This crew is much wiser than my hosts were, thank you.

You come across the being sitting on a barrel, eyes shut, hands folded in her lap. She's stunning. Richly tanned skin, far more supple than what would expect after years at sea. Perfectly manicured nails and an athletic yet elegant frame. A simple green dress and a tattered, but lovely, satin cloak. And dozens of thumb-sized braids cascading just below her shoulders.

Except when you reach her, you see her as she is. You can tell her eyes are just a little too big, and you detect a scaly pattern to her skin. Her nails are sharp claws and her build is just a little too lanky. Her tattered cloak is a pair of wounded iridescent wings, like if a bat were portrayed in jewelry. And the braids, the snakes, pick up their heads one by one to follow your movements. She doesn't need her cursed vision to make you shudder.

But as she said, there is a metal bracket clamped between her wings, with a delicate locking mechanism that would be nearly impossible to undo backwards.
OOC:
Please give me a will save and either a Disable Device or a strength check to just break it, unless you have another idea.

OOC:
Of course if the others have any objections they can make them haha

Nikias follows cautiously. "To have been kept here, three years, as a prisoner...that is a terrible fate. Need you no food, or water? How is that these men bound you like this in the first place? Perhaps they thought to use you as a weapon in the war only to have it turn badly for them. A fate deserved, perhaps."

He steels himself and reaches for the bracket, attempting to break it with raw strength. "It is no good," he says, "and I have no skill with locks." He wanders back to the petrified captain and checks him over, looking for keys.

OOC:
Oof. A one! Hey, Niklas, I'm gonna need either a re-roll of that strength fail with a hero point, or a roll to confirm the fail.

There were great beauties to be found in the world of a military scout: the still silence of a misty dawn, the perfection of an arrow in flight, the flash of sun on the tail of a playful dolphin... "... the sunrise over Troy that first day... came into his mind - something beautiful, astounding... and tragic all together. Something that couldn't be properly grasped in the moment "There is more to it than just the plan, son" came the voice of his father "an anchor or an arrow head, a sword or a shield. Everything we create will leave its mark on the world"

Bending down he'd set calloused palms to the device, inspecting it delicately before looking from his companions to the captive "Captain, I can try to unlock it? With your permission, great daughter of the sea."
OOC:
Disable Device please, +4 dex modifier
Jan 29, 2024 4:14 pm
She nods and will let you attempt.
OOC:
Because disable isn't trained, you can either roll twice and take the lower, or if you have a hero point you can spend it to roll that plain +4 dex. I do also need a will save.

Nikias is unable to break her bonds, and while he searches the captain's statue, he feels the unnerving sensation that the snakes on her head want to eat him. Kouru is unfazed, which is good, because the lock is quite involved. Alas, he is unable to open it.
OOC:
I'm ruling that since Nikias is afraid but Euryale isn't trying to petrify anyone, he is instead too distracted to find a key. We'll pause for Iantha. No rush
