Perception check!

Is the DC for the perception check also the boggles DEX check?
Last edited July 10, 2025 4:32 am

Rolls

Perception (Expertise +3) (disadvantage) - (2d20L1+7)

(2010) + 7 = 17

Jul 10, 2025 11:11 am
OOC:
I'm sorry. I did not explicitly say what the DC for Admiral's perception check is. I intended a DC of 15, so Admiral spots the rift jut in time to try to avoid the staff protruding from it as he is on the move. So go ahead and roll an acrobatics check /w disadvantage to avoid the staff, DC 19 (this DC comes from the boggle's DEX check.)

OOC:
Okay, no worries! Here’s the acrobatics check then:

Rolls

Acrobatics (Expertise +3) (disadvantage) - (2d20L1+8)

(144) + 8 = 12

Jul 10, 2025 3:47 pm
Regan huffs in irritation as the hounds just keep coming. Nevertheless, the pulls his hammer back and swings at the nearest one, the telltale hum being heard as it sweeps through the night air.
OOC:
About out of spell slots. Dropping into standard attsck mode -- Booming Blade with the Crusher feat to try and limit an enemies melee counterattacks.

Rolls

Attack (Booming Blade) - (1d20+8)

(12) + 8 = 20

Damage (Bludgeoning, Magic + Thunder) - (1d8+7+1d8)

(1) + (7) + 7 = 15

Booming Damage - (2d8)

(14) = 5

ADMIRAL
Admiral spots the unnerving ripple that passes through the bark at Admiral’s calf and sees a gnarled staff sweeping low to hook his ankle. He attempts to avoid the staff while keeping his pace but the wielder of the staff on the other side of the rippling rift anticipates Admiral's movement and hooks Admiral nonetheless. This causes Admiral to topple over his own momentum, loose his balance, and miss a vine hand hold, causing him to stumble into a large leaf that has nothing below it. He falls through the leaf and continues to fall. There are various vines that Admiral might be able to grab and various limbs that he could either land on...or crash into...
OOC:
The fall takes up Admiral's turn. Please roll a DEX save to stop the fall, regain footing, and to avoid damage from the fall. (DC 15, without disadvantage.) If you fail Admiral, takes 1d6 damage and must take his his next turn to recover his footing.
Jul 12, 2025 3:44 am
Admiral yelps in surprise as the boggles staff sweeps his legs out from under him and sends him tumbling down from the treetops. He collides with a lower branch on his way down and frantically tries to dig his claws in to stop his fall...

Rolls

Dexterity save - (1d20+2)

(18) + 2 = 20

ADMIRAL
Admiral digs his claws into a branch, managing to stop his fall and regain his footing. Regaining his bearings, he spots an intermittent flash of the boggle's staff about 25 feet ahead of him, this time pretty much at the same canopy level. Perhaps the fall was such a set back after all?
OOC:
Since Admiral adeptly regained footing from his fall he will be free to take his next turn. Let's have Admiral and the boggle now roll initiative. It will be important to determine who get's to take the next action.

Rolls

Boggle: Initiative - (1d20+4)

(3) + 4 = 7

Initiative!

Rolls

Initiative - (1d20+2)

(18) + 2 = 20

REGAN
Regan hurls his hammer at the nearest hound (one of the red unit). It crushes the beast with a thunderous boom sending it backward 5 feet and sheathing it in a field of crackling energy. (Red Unit hounds take 20 damage)

All the hounds synchronized with the one Regan hit seem to be affected by the crackling sheath.

The party attacks (the red unit):

Cordey, who lost his crossbow from the last tail lash, lunges at a hound sheathed in crackling energy with his sword.

Taresh, severely injured, sends a firebolt at a hound.

Jin, sends Eldritch blasts at one of the hounds.

Tasya, sneaks a dagger attack on a hound facing Jin's blasts

Mischa, attempts to pierce the mind of a hound with a mind silver.

Khyree unleashes a wave of blows with her staff.

Rowan strikes with his sword.
OOC:
The party deals 97 damage to the red unit. And Mischa's mind silver effects not only the hound she targeted but all the mentally synced hounds in the red unit. So all 7 hounds take 6 damage each for a total of 42 dealt by Mischa.

In total Regan, the party and Mischa deal the red unit 159 damage.

REGAN
The slab is awash with steel flashes and eel-hound scales.

Regan’s hammer strike forces the unit of seven to hold back as the party takes advantage and strikes. As the fighting occurs more waves of hounds claw up on the rim. 4 synchronized units overrun the slab—eighteen predators in all—spilling across the stone like a scaled tide.

Then the packs strike.

Five hounds converge on Regan; glassy fangs dent plate and puncture flesh, and a barbed tail whips him, nearly forcing him to one knee. (Regan 31 damage.)

At the perimeter, Taresh whirls to meet a charging beast, but its serpentine tail lashes high—cracks against his skull—and the monk crumples, staff rolling from limp fingers onto the moss-dark stone. (Taresh takes 13 damage and now has -9 HP)

Jin raises a warding hand—too late. A snapping maw latches onto his forearm with a crunch, and the follow-through tail slams his ribs, hurling him to the ground, his body falling unconscious. (Jin takes 23 damage and now has -6 HP )

Rowan get a tail smacked into his chest and staggers him breathless. (Rowan takes 12 damage)

Two hounds dart for Mischa, but the snake charmer miraculously dives between tail swings just to get locked by jaws. (Mischa takes 22 damage)

It's the player's turn. oopsylon, Admiral has initiative.

ADMIRAL
Admiral’s claws screech against bark as he arrests his plunge, momentum whipping his tail in a wide arc. A pulse from the staff flickers just twenty-odd feet ahead—too close for the boggle to vanish again. Admiral uncoils, sprinting the length of a number of branches, vaulting a gap, and landing cat-silent behind the fey.

Reaver flashes out first: one sweeping cut drives the boggle off balance, a second snarls through mist to carve a bright gouge across its shoulder. Before the creature can twist a rift into being to escape, Admiral’s off-hand shortsword finds its flank in a rapid, punctuating thrust—pinning the boggle to the limb and cutting off its escape in a blur of cold steel.

Blood sputters from the fey creature's mouth due to Admiral's onslaught. It's eyes go wide at Admiral's aggressive form hovering above it and then they roll upward under lids. A periodic illumination of the staff fades in perfect time with the eyes rolling. The creature falls unconscious and the staff loosens from from the boggle's limp grasp. The staff falls down through the remaining jungle canopy toward the jungle floor.

(The boggle took 23 damage and currently has -3 HP)

Then a heartbeat after the boggle’s staff dims...

REGAN
...a ripple of disarray passes through the slab like a gust of wind through tall grass. The synchronized eel-hounds—previously four, disciplined organisms—suddenly stagger out of harmony. Their crackling eyes dull; jaws freeze mid-snap; one lets out a puzzled whine.

Chaos breaks loose. Two hounds at the rim bolt straight off the edge, claws skittering as instinct overrides training, and they scurry down the rock face into the misty undergrowth. Others backpedal, hackles rising, sniffing the air as though they’ve just awakened in a foreign lair. A pair whirl on each other in panic, tails lashing; another lowers its head and slinks between Regan and Khyree, too bewildered to fight.

The pack’s unified growl dissolves into scattered yelps and uncertain snarls—prey sounds, not war cries—leaving the stone platform ringing with the defenders’ heavy breaths and the distant clatter of retreating claws. In the sudden hush, it’s clear the spell is broken; whatever menace remains in the hounds is feral and unfocused, no longer driven by the boggle’s cruel wisdom.

OOC:
So, by RAW characters don't actually drop into negative HPs. They hit 0 and -- barring outright death due to massive damage -- start making death saves. Is that true for this game as well?

I ask because how useful Lay on Hands is about to be will largely be governed by if they have 0 HP or negative HP.
Jul 13, 2025 8:42 pm
OOC:
I only calculated how many points in the negative because if characters go into a negative or that exceeds max HP, they die instantly. As far as death saves go, I will roll them in a bit, just got late last night.

I normally wouldn’t have an NPC like the boggle get death saves, it would just die. But since Regan pronounced that he want the fey alive, I thought that would be a better more interesting way to go.

OOC:
Death saves

Rolls

Jin, Taresh, Boggle Death Save - (1d20, 1d20, 1d20)

1d20 : (6) = 6

1d20 : (5) = 5

1d20 : (2) = 2

Jul 14, 2025 12:24 am
OOC:
Ma, I see what you were asking. Sorry, I didn’t really answer your question.

They don’t really have negative HP. (I basically put the negative number there to note, mostly to myself, that they didn’t go past their max HP number So Lay on Hands healing not have to start in negative numbers before raising HP past zero.).
Jul 14, 2025 12:49 am
Regan rushes to Taresh's side, infusing him with a small burst of life energy. Once his eyes flutter open, Regan makes haste to Jin and repeats the process.
OOC:
Both receive 5 HP from Lay on Hands, one per turn.
Jul 14, 2025 5:17 pm
REGAN
Just as Regan restores consciousness to Jin, winds around the slab begin to pick up. Cordey, who grasps his amulet, tries to step to the slab's edge around a cringing hound who seems to notice the winds as well, but the creature reacts by darting off the of side the slab with a fearful whimper. A frightened posture seems to spread rapidly among the hounds.

Increasing in intensity, the winds begin to swirl, causing the mist to form visible tornado formations.

Clutching his amulet, Cordey suddenly exclaims, "Get to the center and get low! Now!"
