Smoke, scorch marks, shrapnel on the floor and a few flammable items burning is a clear clue as to what just happened here. A tall woman with red skin and a physique like Xaka’s is standing in the middle of the room. She’s ignoring the two others and the damage in the room. Instead, she’s focusing on creating a magical fiery portal. The smell of smoke and sulfur permeate the room.
"Honestly!" Belvedere says with a tut, as the owl saves its own skin. "Why he keeps that bird arou…" he continues until he runs into the scene and the fiery woman.
"Gah!" he gasps, and fishes out his new scroll. He brandishes it against the red woman.
"Go, Devil!" he commands, preparing to summon water into the room!
"Hold your spell, Magician. Can you not see that's what I'm trying to do?"She shakes her head in disbelief and with a final word, the portal opens up. You can see a realm made entirely of fire reflecting in the portal. You can feel the heat like a desert wind against exposed skin.
Belvedere unfurls the scroll, and shunts both hands towards the portal, beckoning for the thing to be gone, and quick. The heat is walloping, and he’s read to cool the air with a water elemental at a moment’s notice.
"Theres no time for tearful goodbyes, I’m afraid! Carry on now! Quickly!" he says, a hint of threat in his voice.
"That's not good. Should we let her do that?" Xaka offers unhelpfully. Her instinct is to charge and slaughter, but she looks to her more level-headed companions first to see if they realize something that she doesn't.
Kendral finishes moving Grimbly to safety just outside the room. Xaka rushes past him and he returns and sees Belvedere taunting the demon.
"Belvedere, facing demons and inter-dimensional portals are above our pay grade, don’t you think Belvedere? We don’t know the intentions of this creature. If the Baron suspected this to be a possibility, I think he should’ve mentioned it to us."
"Whoa, now that's interesting." Katie murmurs as her feet skid to a halt next to the rest of the group, eyes falling first on the apparition in red, then on her wounded companion, and then back to the... demoness. "What is happening here? Is she trying to leave, or summon more demonthings?" Katie's mind races through everything that she might have learned about infernal beings as she watches in a mix of fascination and terror at the procedings.
"I think we’ve agreed that we’ll all be leaving this place in the next few moments. Haven’t we?" he asks the demon, wondering if they might avoid mutually assured destruction.
The red lady winks at Belvedere then 'glides' into the open portal. It closes behind her, first just a string of glowing red light then that even winks out. The heat disappears with the closing of the portal.
Grimbley, although still wobbly, finds that he can at least move on his own.
"She didn't seem so bad for a demon. Hmm...." Katie makes some mental notes and then comes back to the present. "Yeah, I'm with you all on that. What an adventure though, huh?"
Belvedere exhales and finally lets his shoulders drop, once the demon exits the scene. He puts the back of his hand to his forehead, in an attempt at looking faint.
"A dastardly business! Let’s be away! The Baron can come himself and search for his treasures, if he pleases!"
You found that you didn’t have to risk the current to get safely out of the Castle. The Undead had all stopped moving, allowing the sea birds to pick apart their bodies. Limbs that held heavy weapons or shields had fallen to the wall floor plus your weapons indicated no threat. It took three long days to get back to the Baron’s Village; a rainstorm impeded your progress but it probably did not impede your resolve. When you arrived at the rally point, you found the guide there waiting. He offered you the hospitality of the Baron; a bath, a meal and clean garments. Did you accept? If so, we will continue in the Baron’s study again for the final scene.
