West Tower: Bottom Floor
This tower has thin windows overlooking the Creepy Forest below; idea for bow or crossbow fire. It is thick stone and reinforced by oak beams crisscrossing the roof. A sconce is mounted on the wall to hold a torch. There are spiral stairs along one side of the wall to the top of the tower. On the eastern wall a cubby-hole replaces a window with elaborate stonework. Inside rests an Urn that matches the Baron's description. Looks like you just found an item! Its black with a red tint.
Exits
East Door-Open and leads to the Hallway.
Up: stairs that lead to the top of the tower.
The urn looks like it has a swirling red mist inside; sealed at the top with hard wax with a ribbon tied around it with acanic sigils inked upon its clothe.

"Grimbly..." Kendral pauses at the site of the urn. "Is that it!? Let's take it, find the others, and get out of here! Wait...I have an idea. Grab it while I get a note on Moonshadow."
Kendral takes out a bit of parchment and scribbles a note on it with his quill. We have the urn. Let's all meet at the skiff and get out of here.
He shows Grimbly the note. "What do you think? I can send Moonshadow to find the others and hopefully we can make a quick rendezvous at the skiff."

"I agree but I'd be willing to bet it won't be as easy as grabbing the urn. See that swirling mist? I bet that's trouble. But go ahead and send the message so they are ready."

As Grimbly studies the urn, it becomes transparent like glass. The red mist evaporates and is replaced by the image of a young woman with fairy wings. She looks gloomy as her eyes lock on to Grimbly. She points to the lid and seems to be pleading with him.

"Oh! We have to release her!" Staring transfixed at the urn and its contents, Grimbly nods at Kendral. "Yes. We must release her from captivity."
Grimbly carefully grasps the urn and will remove the cover if he can.

EXPLOSION!!!!
The entire room is suddenly engulfed in flames as an explosion occurs with the sound equal to a thunder clap!! Not to mention stray shards of shrapnel from the urn itself!

When the dust clears Kendral sees Grimbly down. Ignoring the fact that a fey could be on the loose he moves quickly to his companion.
"No. No. No! Hold on Grimbly!", he says in desperation.
While putting pressure on some obviously bleeding wounds. He pops open his healing potion vial with his teeth and his other hand and and spits out the cork onto the floor.
"We could have just grabbed the urn with the fey inside and taken it to the Baron that way, but no!...we had to go and open it! And now look what happened!"
He forcibly jams the vial into the back of Grimbly's throat to pour the liquid directly into the overgrown farm boy's esophagus. He then rips away some fabric from Grimbly's garments and ties off and area to slow bleeding and he elevates Grimbly's wounded area above the level of his heart to help slow down the bleeding as well.
Hopefully the potion is all that is needed!

The Scene
Smoke, scorch marks, shrapnel on the floor and a few flammable items burning is a clear clue as to what just happened here. A tall woman with red skin and a physique like Xaka’s is standing in the middle of the room. She’s ignoring the two others and the damage in the room. Instead, she’s focusing on creating a magical fiery portal. The smell of smoke and sulfur permeate the room.

Apr 2, 2024 4:55 pm
Grimbly moans and groans, the pain of his wounds getting the better of the man's pride.
"But she looked so desperate in there," he manages to whisper weakly.
"I'm sorry and thank you for trying to patch me up. I was always a sucker for a damsel in distress. I am glad that you are alright."

"Honestly!" Belvedere says with a tut, as the owl saves its own skin. "Why he keeps that bird arou…" he continues until he runs into the scene and the fiery woman.
"Gah!" he gasps, and fishes out his new scroll. He brandishes it against the red woman.
"Go, Devil!" he commands, preparing to summon water into the room!

"Hold your spell, Magician. Can you not see that's what I'm trying to do?"She shakes her head in disbelief and with a final word, the portal opens up. You can see a realm made entirely of fire reflecting in the portal. You can feel the heat like a desert wind against exposed skin.

Apr 4, 2024 7:06 am
Belvedere unfurls the scroll, and shunts both hands towards the portal, beckoning for the thing to be gone, and quick. The heat is walloping, and he’s read to cool the air with a water elemental at a moment’s notice.
"Theres no time for tearful goodbyes, I’m afraid! Carry on now! Quickly!" he says, a hint of threat in his voice.

"That's not good. Should we let her do that?" Xaka offers unhelpfully. Her instinct is to charge and slaughter, but she looks to her more level-headed companions first to see if they realize something that she doesn't.
Apr 4, 2024 3:11 pm
Kendral finishes moving Grimbly to safety just outside the room. Xaka rushes past him and he returns and sees Belvedere taunting the demon.
"Belvedere, facing demons and inter-dimensional portals are above our pay grade, don’t you think Belvedere? We don’t know the intentions of this creature. If the Baron suspected this to be a possibility, I think he should’ve mentioned it to us."

"Whoa, now that's interesting." Katie murmurs as her feet skid to a halt next to the rest of the group, eyes falling first on the apparition in red, then on her wounded companion, and then back to the... demoness. "What is happening here? Is she trying to leave, or summon more demonthings?" Katie's mind races through everything that she might have learned about infernal beings as she watches in a mix of fascination and terror at the procedings.
Apr 5, 2024 9:57 am
"I think we’ve agreed that we’ll all be leaving this place in the next few moments. Haven’t we?" he asks the demon, wondering if they might avoid mutually assured destruction.
Apr 5, 2024 1:40 pm
The red lady winks at Belvedere then 'glides' into the open portal. It closes behind her, first just a string of glowing red light then that even winks out. The heat disappears with the closing of the portal.
Grimbley, although still wobbly, finds that he can at least move on his own.
Nobody's Soul Weapon is glowing.

"She didn't seem so bad for a demon. Hmm...." Katie makes some mental notes and then comes back to the present. "Yeah, I'm with you all on that. What an adventure though, huh?"
Apr 7, 2024 1:22 am
Belvedere exhales and finally lets his shoulders drop, once the demon exits the scene. He puts the back of his hand to his forehead, in an attempt at looking faint.
"A dastardly business! Let’s be away! The Baron can come himself and search for his treasures, if he pleases!"

The End
You found that you didn’t have to risk the current to get safely out of the Castle. The Undead had all stopped moving, allowing the sea birds to pick apart their bodies. Limbs that held heavy weapons or shields had fallen to the wall floor plus your weapons indicated no threat. It took three long days to get back to the Baron’s Village; a rainstorm impeded your progress but it probably did not impede your resolve. When you arrived at the rally point, you found the guide there waiting. He offered you the hospitality of the Baron; a bath, a meal and clean garments. Did you accept? If so, we will continue in the Baron’s study again for the final scene.

The Baron's Study
After a good long rest which includes a mineral bath, a hot meal and a comfortable night of sleep, you are guided the following evening back into the study. This adventure, it seems, ends where it began; the Baron’s study. It's pretty much the same as it was before, to include a sidebar with refreshments and drink, with one exception; a stone table in the center that is covered with sigils. In the center of the table is a bowl of salt and on five sides are lit ceremonial candles. Those with knowledge of arcana recognize this as protection from dark magical influences. The Baron is sitting in his favorite chair puffing on a herbal pipe. The air smells sweet as a result of his leaf.
"Please place the items on the table, to include the wand I lent you."he requests."One must not be too careful when dealing with artifacts like these. This table will clear you of any curses or influence that may linger."he assures."You will be well rewarded, I promise, but first I would like to hear about your trip. You made good time, I hope there were no complications?"He speaks as if your adventure was a hike in the woods followed by entering an abandoned house.

Xaka is feeling fresh and clean, her wounds itching but seeming to close without infection, thanks to healing poultices and concoctions previewed by her new herbalist friend.
She's grateful to see more food in the baron's chamber, but doesn't fill a platter just yet. Eyeing the table with naked suspicion, she retrieves the heavy Grimoire Katie found, but that she carried. She gingerly places it on the table, careful not to open it up.
The Necromancer's Grimoire is locked shut but it doesn't require a key; it can be unlocked manually without one easily. Its purpose seems to be just to keep the book bound shut. It's made of sterling silver. The book is bound by a dark dyed leather.
Whenever she touches it, she feels a kind of waiting dread, not unlike being in a witches hut and surrounded by mysterious objects of sinister purpose.
She leaves the story telling to the others. For now

The Chalice of Poison is a unholy looking Grail decorated with skull carvings, or maybe actual skulls...
The elf looks at Belvedere "Well...the tale of our 'trip' Belvedere?" prompts Kendral.

"A harrowing tale, I assure you! Every member of this troupe is deserving of a barony and a retinue of servants to carry out their every whim! A ghastly tale… One that I’ve yet to fully put to music. The recency of the thing… Gah! It weighs heavy on both body and mind." Belvedere says, working himself up to the telling.
With some more gentle coaxing, Belvedere will indulge the man in the tale. He adds flair and drama to the whole tale, as is his profession. The dryads, and the hanged man. The perilous sea crossing and the close fought thing in the gut of the castle.
The telling of the story makes it sound a closer thing than it had been. The demoness had become larger, more aggressive, with threats and promises to return with her red horde and lay ruin to the kingdoms of man…
His teeth red from wine at the finish, Belvedere slumps back in his chair, exhausted from the theatrics.
"But by the skin of our teeth, do we sit before you! I hope the trinkets are worth the effort, my lord!"

The Baron cannot help but look somewhat amused by Belvedere's elaborate story
"Keep the wand then, minstrel. You certainly earned it."After a short pause he addresses part of the tale."Efreeti....not a demoness."he gently corrects."A Fire Djinn. Unusual, though, that she threatened to return. I would guess that years of entrapment made the red lass a bit salty. Djinn don't care for our world. Hopefully, her threats were empty ones as a result of her resentment. I'm curious, .....how did she escape the Urn?"
His eyes rest on each member of the party, ready to accept an answer from anyone.

Grimbly smiles and nods along with Belvedere's story, complete with embellishments. When he has finished Grimbly turns to the baron.
"How much will you be paying us then? As you have heard, we are well worth a nice sum. And you had promised good payment."

On the topic of the jar, Belvedere had already practiced an explanation! He nudges Grimbly for speaking without answering the Baron’s question, before going on!
"Aha! Well, when our foul foe found herself beset on all sides by brave heroes, she became desperate, and freed the creature in an effort to save her own skin. A last ditch attempt at victory!"

Xaka listens to the urn story was well, for she just came into the room at the end of that. She thanks the Baron for hiring them. "I hope those artifacts bring you prosperity and hope. They're dangerous, any reasonable person can sense that, and I'm heartened that you know how to contain them. Perhaps now that castle might find peace. "
Apr 11, 2024 2:20 pm
Grimbly looks suitably contrite after the nudge from Belvedere. He has the same wish for the castle as Xaka has voiced. And now he had hopes of a quiet life, at least for a while before adventuring forth again.

"It was a fascinating excursion - undead, efreeti, artifacts of terrifying power. So many things to add to my notebooks!" She beams broadly and adjusts her hat, cocking it jauntily on her head. "It was a little scary on occasion, i must admit, but... so much fun! Even more so in retrospect," she adds with a crooked smile.
"Anytime you need someone or someones to investigate an anomaly or other curiousity, I'd be happy to help," she concludes with a small bow and a bit of excited bouncing on the balls of her feet.

The session ends with a servant passing out leather bags bulging with coins. The evening ends with a banquet to celebrate in which the party is the guest of honors. Plenty of food, drink and 'quirky personalities'. The Baron rarely parties but when he does, he goes all out! You find yourselves the center of attention being approached by some of the most influential folks in the barony which may or may not elevate your status (depending how your PC conducted him/herself lol).
