Are we choosing our character's involuntary reaction or did I miss something? Is this a flavour thing or is there a mechanic behind it?

It's a flavour thing (but might give you away in a situation where you're trying to stay quiet :)

Unfortunately DNDTossToss(Rosana) has decided to step out of the game as they're struggling to use Garmersplane. Rosana will remain for the moment as an NPC.

Lettie wants to do something illegal (take the book so it doesn't get bagged up as evidence). But she is not a criminal, nor would she ever do something like this in other circumstances... What kind of roll would I need for this?

A sleight of hand roll if you want to hide it on your person. As no one (aside from Jack) can see you, you will get a bonus die, rolling an additional d10 as the ‘tens’ and take the best result.

Alternatively you can use social skills to convince the police that the books are your property pursuade, charm, fast talk etc
