The school year kicked off with a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
It was the first day of autumn. A flicker of sunlight through an opening of the cloudy skies cast the city below in hues of greys, the subtle chill in the air and a soft breeze hinting at colder days to come.
A mix of tourists, families, and art enthusiasts milled about the entrance. Some carrying guidebooks or maps, some snapping photos of the building’s grand facade with their phones. Among them were the groups of high school students. Loud and rambunctious, they were herded into the building by teachers and chaperones who were hard at work to make sure everyone stayed together and behaved properly.
It was a typical morning at the Met, but within a mere few hours the police would cordon off the entire area, government agents would bustle about with grim purpose, and news helicopters would circle overhead, reporting live from the scene.
