11th of October, 2023. Westview high, Brooklyn

Students poured into the hallway as soon as the buzzing ring echoed over the school’s PA system. A short minute later, and the once quiet and empty corridor was flooded by chattery teenagers, eager to make the most out of the short recess between their boring classes.

The more seriously-minded among them made a beeline to their lockers to retrieve the textbooks so they could head straight to their next class without delay. Others were more interested in catching up with their friends before their next period started, gathering in small clusters that inevitably congested the crowded passageway.

The clatter of locker doors opening and closing, the squeaking of sneakers over the floor, and students talking over one another, made it hard to carry a conversation without raising your voice to match the pandemonium in the background. The two teenagers standing near the row of lockers did NOT raise their voices. They would have gone unnoticed by all, if not for the evident distress on the girl's face…

A happy-go-lucky young boy, Deion looked uncharacteristically concerned as he stood next to the straw-haired young girl who looked like she just sucked on a lemon. The same girl who forcibly slammed the door to her locker shut with exasperation born of desperation.

"I’m sorry, Angi. I’m sure he will turn up, eventually. It’s only been a couple of days"

The teen resisted the urge to put his hand over her shoulder. He wanted to comfort her, but Angelina looked too distraught to appreciate the gesture - and she wasn’t the most approachable person to begin with.

"You don’t get it. Mr. Sleepy NEVER leaves our front porch, and the only reason he ever goes out there is to soak up the sun. He’s not a street cat. He would have never – " the girl could feel her eyes welling up, hating herself for breaking down emotionally and making a scene in front of everyone. She better get a hold of herself quickly, before the tears start rolling down her cheeks "Forget it" she turned her head to look at her locker, rather than his eyes "-just leave me alone"

Unknowingly to the two, there was another bit of drama brewing farther down the hallway, one which, predictably, involved the Ogre. The monstrous giant always drew the attention of the entire student body whenever he stepped out of the classroom. Only today, the stares and fearful glances were accompanied by hushed whispers and an occasional giggle – and it all had to do with the three Harpies walking right in front of him, their voices carried farther than one would expect over the cacophony of the school’s hallway as the students tended to be much more reserved in the monster’s presence
May 5, 2024 4:58 pm
"Have you seen that Ogre? It couldn’t fit its fat ass into the chair! I can’t for the life of me understand why they are letting it into the school" The stunning blonde was used to drawing attention, but for an entirely different reason. One would think her ego was inflated enough from all the teenage boys constantly fawning over her that she wouldn’t feel the need to put other people down for the sake of feeling superior. And they would be right; Stacy was mean, for meanness's sake alone " - should’ve sent it straight to the zoo. Disgusting animal"
May 5, 2024 4:59 pm
" - or to the Circus. For real" Unlike Stacy, Clohe normally wouldn’t spare a thought for the Ogre. He could be run over by a school bus tomorrow, for all she cared. Or not; as long as he stayed out of her way. But if they were already talking about him, she might as well say where she thought he truly belonged: "Freakshow"
May 5, 2024 5:00 pm
"Yes, totally!" Lisa giggled nervously, but only after she was certain where the winds were blowing, chiming in even though no one cared what she was thinking. Unlike the two other girls, the presence of the Ogre walking a mere three feet behind them made her visibly apprehensive, but not enough that she would say anything to contradict Stacy; she would rather have her spine ripped out of her body by the rampaging monster than lose favor with her two ‘friends’.

OOC:
Feel free to describe where your character is at when the scene starts, what they were doing, and how they would react (if at all) to the Ogre being publicly dissed by the three girls.

Vermite: Angelina lives in your neighborhood, just down the road, but would that be reason enough to get involved in a mundane problem, when you’re already struggling to balance your job, schoolwork, and being a hero?

Another reason to be concerned; Enola’s brother never came home last night. That’s not the first time he’s done it, but it has your mother at her wits end worrying about his whereabout.

Enola closes her locker just as Deion and Angelina finish speaking, having eavesdropped on their conversation with as much subtly as possible. Given the nature of her powers, her rodent friends have given an ample description of Mr. Sleepy, the laziest cat in the neighbourhood. Every time she passes by Angelina's house on the way to work and Mr. Sleepy is lazing about, she can hear how brazen the squirrels and field mice are about walking up to the cat without provoking it. The name is certainly apt. Still, rodent or not, Enola can definitely understand Angelina's worry. One of Enola's pet rats escaped from her enclosure back in Wyoming years back. She was worried sick, and were it not for her powers, she'd have never found them. Angelina does not have that same capability nor does she have any means of finding Mr. Sleepy. However, who better to find a cat than its potential prey? She could try asking the local rodents if they've found a cat matching the description. It might be a long shot; cats are notorious for exploring hard-to-reach areas. Mr. Sleepy however is a special lazy case. Enola figures that she could ask around while looking for Chayton after school. The thought of her brother's behaviour forces a sigh out of her, but she buries it quickly enough to turn to Angelina.

"Hey, uh, Angelina?" she says, nervous of offending her further. "I couldn't help but hear about Mr. Sleepy. I go on long walks around the neighbourhood all the time." Mainly to track down my annoying brother. "I can't promise that I'll find him, but I'll do my best to keep an eye out for him. I've got my own pet at home so I know the feeling of one of them running away. So...yeah."

Jodelle is quick to grab her textbooks from her locker to get ready for the next class. She doesn't have much friends at all in school. Just a few friends. Former friends. Awkward relationships. She's fine with that. Being alone is often quite better anyway.

Sure, she is by far less conspicuous than Sonny, but with her black dresses, green hair and beaded jewelry she's quite notable and quite unpopular herself. Not that she cares. She is who she is. She doesn't want to be like all perfect Stacy who....

Speaking of which...

Jodelle hears the cackling of the harpies in the hallway, insulting Sonny again. One of the few true friends Jodelle has.

With her textbooks held thightly against herself, almost as if hugging them, she stands in the middle of the hallway. Firmly planting her feet to the floor, facing Stacy, Chloe and Lisa directly. She never really cared about getting in trouble too much.

"Hi girls! I come to give you a message from the manager of Walmart. He said he wants his three identical plastic mannequins back. He said that they are easy to recognize, for their heads are hollow."

Ogre had learned to be very careful in the hallway. Not only did he need to watch his head and squeeze through narrow doorways for the next class, but he had to edge around the rush of students. He didn't want to risk stepping on someone's foot and even a gently unintended bump could send them flying across the hall, so Ogre was very, very careful.

For that reason, he couldn't really stop when the three girls in front of him started with mean comments. He had to keep moving with careful deliberation. If he stopped in the middle of the hallway he would cause a traffic jam, that would become a scene, people would start to pay attention to him, they'd probably be more comments, and that was much worse.

So he carefully picked his way, keeping his position behind the three girls.
Jodelle says:
Hi girls! I come to give you a message from the manager of Walmart. He said he wants his three identical plastic mannequins back. He said that they are easy to recognize, for their heads are hollow.
He couldn't help but smile, and was unable to stifle a deep rumbling chuckle. That was so much like Jodelle. Standing up for him. It felt good to hear someone cut the mean girls with an insult even if the last thing he wanted was more attention.

He looks Jodelle in the eye with a pleading look, slowly shaking his head.

Please don't do anything, his eyes try to say.

There’s something visibly wrong with Beau Baines. It’s not the kind of wrongness that draws attention like Ogre, but something else just outside of canny; she’s spent the better part of the day in silence, on the periphery of every room, eyes occasionally sharpening to a deadly focus but otherwise unfocused, as if she were constantly somewhere far away. A far cry from her previous self.

Now is one of those times where looks could kill.

Beau hangs around the edges of the crowd, hands deep in pockets, curly hair falling in front of her dark eyes, dark bruises visible under them from lack of sleep - she’s been tactlessly compared to a future serial killer by her esteemed classmates at least once - glaring at the three girls talking smack about Ogre. She’s keeping out of view, meandering through the halls and getting swallowed by the crowd a bit, but between flashes of movement one might see that wide-eyed glare shooting daggers. On first glance her expression might read as blank as always, but there’s a twitch to her brow, a tenseness to her jaw, the raising of her hackles, that bely a building anger.

With Jodelle now halting their progress, Beau does not pick up speed, but is still approaching the group with a single-minded focus.

Min heard the snipping begin and quickly ducked her head further into her already open locker. This was something she definitely didn't want to get involved in. It wasn't right but she wasn't about to get in trouble in school. So instead as she tried to keep her head down she focused on the near rather than far. So she overheard the conversation between the three students about their lost cat. Now that was something she approved of. If only she could actually help Unfortunately she didn't really know any of them particularly well and it would feel awkward to but in on that conversation so she did what she had done for most of her time here in school, stayed quiet and tried to fade into the background.

Unfortunately for her she doesn't notice that it isn't just the trio and Jodelle, but that troublemaker Beau as well. Ogre she knew was a bigger man, and would be the bigger man, he was a hero after all and Jodelle his friend. Beau though, that girl was trouble and she would have done something if she had noticed that coming down the hall, even if it was just to slip off to try and find a teacher.

"That’s an AWESOME idea" The smile returned to Deion’s face. He didn’t know whether Enola could find the cat or not, but the fact that she volunteered to offer her help would let Angie know she had friends at school who cared for her. She could take comfort in that, at least. "You know what? I’m going to ask a few of my buddies to come over this afternoon and help search for him. We’ll split the neighborhoods into a grid and assign a person to search each area" Deion was starting to get caught up in his own excitement "I’m sure we’re going to find him in no time!"

Like, how far away could Mr. Sleepy possibly stray? He’s probably hiding under a nearby car or something. The ever-optimistic boy didn’t wait for Angelina’s reply. He was busy texting his friends before he ever completed his sentence!

While Deion was asking for a photo of Mr. Sleepy to share with his friends, the situation on the other side of the hallway was growing from bad to worse. The Harpies stopped in the middle of the corridor when the young girl stepped to confront them, a sardonic smile spreading on the face of their leader. Stacy was not one to back down from an altercation. She loved drama and turmoil, and if she was forced to, she would have admitted to being grateful for the opportunity to quash another girl under her heel:

"Oh, I’m sorry. I wasn’t aware you had a thing for the Ogre" There was a spate of laughter from the forming crowd. Stacy didn’t say anything particularly funny, but there was no shortage of desperate boys vying for her attention. Whether or not the two of them were romantically involved didn’t matter either; everyone at school was going to believe that was the case by the end of the school day. Stacy would make sure of that "Did the chimps at the zoo turn you down? Or are you that desperate because a real guy would never ask you out?"

Cold sweat rolled down Lisa’s back. She would rather be anywhere else right now than be the one person standing between the terrifying Ogre, and the young woman heaping insults upon him. She’s seen firsthand how strong he was back at the Met during their field trip, when the Ogre punched that man through a concrete wall. Imagine what he could do to her head? Probably crush it like a ripe tomato, with a comparable sort of splatter that would entail.

She could feel the bitter taste of bile in her mouth. Her heart pounding in her chest. She wanted to run away, but it felt as if her feet were glued to the floor. The only thing that could save her was the bell. How long is this recess, anyways?
May 6, 2024 6:53 pm
"Come on, Stacy. Give her a break"
If anyone thought that Chloe would try to de-escalate the situation, then they haven’t been paying attention:
"Just look at her. Hasn’t she suffered enough?"
May 6, 2024 6:54 pm
"Really?!?" The spat in the corridor was starting to draw more and more attention. This time, it was from a tall, athletic, young man everybody at school knew by name. Jason was the point guard for the Raptors, Westview’s basketball team. He was also handsome and easygoing, but more pertinent to the situation at hand – he was Jodelle’s protective older brother.

"Grow up, will ya?" He had a few choice put-downs of his own on the very tip of his tongue, and he had to hold himself back from ripping into the three airheads.

Quarreling with the Harpies was like mud wrestling a pig; you both get dirty, but the pig likes it.
May 6, 2024 6:56 pm
"Hey there, champ"

Jason was playing for the Raptors, but Cam was the quarterback AND Captain of the Thunderbolts. And unlike Jason, Cam was a temperamental hothead.

Already sensing something was about to go down, the students at the hallway started forming a circle around the two groups of students facing each other off. Some were merely curious, others were eager to see a fight break out, with the ones who didn’t want to be associated with any trouble quick to vacate the area.

"Why don’t you mind your own @#$% Business, huh? Get the @#!$ out of our face!"

OOC:
Jodelle and Ogre – mark a condition of your choice.

Anyone on the Team can declare a Move as part of your response to the developing situation. Provoking someone is obviously a relevant Move (The Harpies count as a single villain. Then there is Jason and Cam). You can use ‘Defend someone’ to potentially clear a condition from the Ogre or Jodelle. Or even ‘directly engage a threat’ if you want to inflict a condition on an opponent (nobody said the blows exchanged have to be physical blows. Though that would eliminate the threat as well 😉 )
