Dead in the Water

"Aw little guy. Come here. We won't hurt you." The poor little fella was a bright spark in Richard's dreary world.

"He looks like he's starving." Richard digs around in his pocket for a tidbit and comes up with a morsel of something he can't identify other than that its food. He sniffs it for spoilage and deems it ok, holding it out to the dog. All else is forgotten. The tension, their lives under attack, the girls in the building, all of it gone for these few moments.

Selena's utterance finally surfaces in Richard's consciousness. "Have you lost all of your humanity?"

Shayna stuffs the revolver in her pants, the ammo in her pockets, the med kit she stuffs under her shirt. "Jackpot, girl," she says to Billie-Faye and leaves the rest for now after showing her.

"Let's get this walker taken care of, sugah." She shows BF the revolver. "Spear and axe? We've made enough noise. Don't know if it works either. Ammo could be duds."
Oct 3, 2024 9:26 pm
"Careful with that mutt," he says to Richard. "It looks scared, you never know how it'll react."

He looks nervously through one of the gaps between the cars forming the barricade, at the open store door behind it where Shayna and Billie-Faye have entered.

"Hey, I appreciate your concern, Owen, but they called me the dog whisperer in a previous life." He continues to hold out what he hopes is a tasty morsel for the pup with no regard for how he will feed it later.

Billie-Faye offers a grin and a thumbs-up at Shayna when they locate the stash, but she leaves everything where it is, not wanting to get loaded down before they go take out what she hopes is the final walker.

"Spear and axe," she agrees quietly.

Quick question KCC -- I'll ask in the Discord too, but this cabinet with the noise... it's metal, correct? Two doors or one? Is there a way to wire the handles together if two?

Will one of us roll for the walker take down, helped by the other?
Oct 6, 2024 12:23 am
When they arrive back at the locked door, Billie-Faye and Shayna move an empty shelf into position on its side in front of the cabinet. If a walker's going to burst out of there, hopefully it'll get tangled up in the metal and be an easier target...

"Ma! Ma! Ma, she’s bit!" come the frantic cries of the man, as he breaks through the trees and towards the ring of cars that surround the hunting supply store!

The summer heat beats down, and the man is drenched through, as he carries the small child in his arms. The tiny body is lolling terrible, and the only movement anyone can see comes from the hurried run of the man holding her.

"Oh shit!" a voice calls from the lookout nest on the roof, and a moment later there’s the sound of feet on ladder steps!

The strain of metal, as the man leaps up onto the hood of a car, and the weight of he and the small child is enough to leave an impression in the car!

"Ma! She’s fucking bit!" the words come again, though this time they sound far more mournful and desperate!

Angry scratching starts up again inside the closet, as the two women go about the business of building a barricade! It wasn’t as sturdy as the cars outside but, with any luck, their opposition wasn’t going to be as plentiful either!

The final wordless communication is had between the women, and the door is thrown open! Billie-Faye readies her blow, and Shayna is there to force the thing back of the biker woman missed her mark!

Richard’s light searches for the thing! It’s only as Billie-Faye is committing to the strike that she redirects her swing to be much lower than anticipated! Dreadfully small and paper thin, the walker meets the barricade and then Billie-Faye’s huge axe puts it in two pieces!

A second swing quietens the child-walkers impotent snarls for good! Quiet falls on the hunting goods store…

"What? It scared me, that’s all!" the young woman says defensively. A dog and a moody teenager. It was as if the world had never gone to shit at all!

The food, whatever it may have been, seems to have sealed the deal. The thing scoots forward, and leaps up onto the car with ease. It’s almost soundless, such is the size and weight of the poor looking creature now.

Tentatively, it smells Richard’s pocket meat. Then it smells it again for good measure. Scooting back, so that it might have the option to escape should it be startled, it gently places teeth around the offering! Pulling a piece free, it gets to work on scarfing it down right there on the car!

A moment later, and it loses some of the stiffness that indicates it might scamper away at first opportunity, and enjoys some more of the evening’s meal!

Richard didn't remember a time in his recent past when he had smiled so broadly. The dog began to trust him, so he tried to give him a good scratch around the years. His up until now tensed shoulders began to release and for a few minutes he felt normal again. Rummaging around for another tidbit, he planned to give the scrawny thing another snack.

"What a good boy," Richard croons. To the teen girl he asks, "This your dog?"

Crouching down near the dead child, the dead thing that used to be a child, Billie-Faye's head hangs, her tangled and dirty blonde hair falling in front of her face. She's quiet for a few long seconds, then she rises wearily, that terrible weapon still in her hands, and she simply says, "Fuck."

A few moments and several steadying breaths later, she's opening the front door. It's clear from the look on her face that something happened inside, but equally clear that now was not the time to ask what.

"It's clear inside," she says to everyone present in her soft drawl. "We can stay here, at least tonight. Place is a wreck and stinks, needs to be cleaned up... but it's four walls and a roof. Door locks, there's a crapper and a bunch of shit left behind by the last crew. Let's get everyone inside before it gets totally dark."

Shayna touches Billie-Fay's shoulder. "That wasn't what it looked like. Don't let it get to you." Grow jaded and bitter like me.

She grabs the child sized things leg and carefully carries it outside, to toss it out of sight.

"Place is a wreck and stinks... what's not to like..." he mumbles under his breath.

He addresses Richard and Selena. "Better go check what needs to be done in there... Looks like we're staying at the Motor Barricade Hotel tonight..."

He hooks the machete to his belt and goes past the barricade, trying to find the route with the least possible fallen walkers...

He enters the store and winces for the stench. " Holy crap... "
Trying to look sparingly at the various human remains, he busies himself to help remove them from inside their new shelter...

"More like motor barracuda if you ask me, which you didn't."

Whatever good mood the dog elicited in the man had instantly dissipated when he entered the hovel.

"Jesus wept, this place fucking stinks. I'd rather be in the fresh air then breathe this toxic soup." Despite his complaint, he begins helping Owen.

Shayna wipes her hand after tossing the child. "Likely give us all nightmares. Maybe we can air it out before sleep."

After ushering the others inside, Cooper lends a hand to the initial clean-up as well… ideally starting with some corner of the store that doesn’t reek so bad. As she works, she muses, "There’s the roof access too, that position we saw from outside. We should check that out… might be a way to sleep up there, safe and out of the stank."

A few of the others share concerned glances as Richard asks if one of them owns the dog, but they shake it off as stress or tiredness weighing the man down!

You’d travelled the river for hours, and the day had been filled with closer calls than you’d usually have to deal with: both human and walker! As you clean out the stink of downstairs, and perhaps investigate the crow’s nest for its suitability as a sleeping spot, you realize just how tired, hungry and frayed at the edges you all are!

The pontoon bobs on the river a ways away, and Vinh had done his best to tie it tight, and leave it bare enough that it wouldn’t be a target for raiders. The cars had been found strong, and secure; as had the front door of the shop, once it was properly closed and locked up.

You realize, as the work of airing out the place continues, that this is the first time in months that you’ve had solid walls between you and the world… between you and the walkers.

Let’s get rid of that stress, folks. You can each write a short bit about how you interact with your anchors, and then you’ll be refreshed!

Oh, and it feels like a good time to gain some XP!

One person can also write a ‘Dearly departed…’ if you feel it might apply!

How are we doing Experience again? Looking at BF’s sheet, I see I’ve marked two boxes of XP. Is that right? Are we going to do the whole question-answering thing from p28? I’m happy to do a Dearly Departed if no one else wants to, and I can probably flow it straight into a scene with Richard if he’s up for it…

Yep! Question based XP! It might be a little light this time around, but it’s quite hard to pace in PBP!
