During the cleanup operations, Owen teams up with Vink.
The duo are soon busy carrying outside refuse of all kinds, that they deposit past the barricade.

It is hard and often unpleasant work, but the calming presence of the artist does good to Owen's spirits.
Keeping busy also helps him to stop thinking for a moment about the awful killing, that very morning.

Shayna spends some time cleaning the place, but as the night grows darker and darker, she finds herself over by the cars keeping watch with Martin.

They'll talk lightly, exchanging concerns and ideas for what to do. In some manner they're both leaders of this little band, as much as any one person is, and it's nice to share that burden. Even put it down for a moment.

How are we doing Experience again? Looking at BF’s sheet, I see I’ve marked two boxes of XP. Is that right? Are we going to do the whole question-answering thing from p28? I’m happy to do a Dearly Departed if no one else wants to, and I can probably flow it straight into a scene with Richard if he’s up for it…
He sure is..

Tired, frustrated, confused, angry. Which of these did Richard feel the most? All of them. All of them the most. This was the first roof over his head in how long? He didn't even know. He no longer recognized himself. He started out this nightmare determined to find a cure. He was a brilliant scientist after all. This was still his goal, but he was distracted with the business of surviving. He snapped at Owen, the boy who in his mind was a substitute for his own son. He leered at the women, all of them except Emma.

Feeling relatively safe now, he allowed himself the luxury of meditation. He hadn't had a chance to do that since the pontoon boat. It always grounded him. Made things clearer.

His contribution to the cleaning complete, he found a quiet corner and began his meditation routine. Afterwards, he felt a little calmer but there was still that undercurrent of apprehension snaking its way around his body.

"Ugh," he groaned, rising up on stiff knees. He needed a friend. Emma was a poet. A deep thinker. He would tell her his troubles. He didn't look upon her the same way as the others. She was welcoming. Genuine. He'd tell her his story.

Dearly Departed

Hell of a day. Supposed to just be a supply run, but after that encounter with the two fuck-heads from what sounds like a *very* fucked-up group of double-Y rapists, well... Owen had blood on his hands, Dick let the other guy get away and then they were on the run. They had all been arguing about whether to leave the pontoon boat or at least the location anyway, so fifty gallons of shit hitting a swampboat fan actually made for a nice reasons to get the ever lovin' fuck outa Dodge.

Then Owen was running them around -- kid was having a hard day -- knocking several survivors into the water. Everyone made it out okay, but then they capped off the whole affair with almost a dozen walkers surging out of the sporting goods store. And there was the kid in the locker. Shayna and Billie-Faye made for an efficient, cold-blooded pair sometimes, but tonight Billie had been shaken by cutting the little girl in half.

So after helping the others clean up and clear the access to the roof, the blonde goes looking for Richard. Sometimes she needs to be looked at, needs to be *wanted*. Tonight was one of them nights, but by the time she gets washed up Kant is talking with Emma. So Cooper instead goes lookin' for the little cunt her best friend charged her with looking after. Tracy was a prick, but he was Christy Devlin's son and so that was that. Billie-Faye was lookin' after him.

She checks in with him, gently, trying to make sure he's okay after the events of the day. Sometimes he reacts okay to that, sometimes it just makes him worse. Bille's hoping it's been a tough enough row that he doesn't have much of his twat father in him tonight...

Morning comes all too quick! It’s feels as if you had only just closed your eyes when they’re back open again! The day before had taken its toll on you, and those not on watch had collapsed into sleep just as soon as the cleaning was done!

And good thing it was done, too. The morning sun beats down with a vengeance, despite winter being right around the bend. Flies buzz about the carcasses you’d moved and stacked a ways away from your shelter. They flit about the dead, and it’s a constant battle to keep them from flitting about you - the living.

You’d half wondered if you might wake up to a fresh batch of walkers trying to clamber over the barricades, given Richard’s discharge last night. It seemed like luck had been on the man’s side…

Martin sat with his shirt open at the front revealing his wiry, almost gaunt, frame beneath. He fanned himself with what looks to be a map from the hunting supply place!

Martin Cater
"Motorcade." he starts, meaning to draw in your curiosity first thing in the morning! "Crash site." he goes on, listing off what he sees on the map. "Refugee camp." he says finally, before placing the map down on a cleared out table!

Tracy groans, as Martin starts his shit first thing in the morning. As if remembering himself, he looks about the room, as the others begin to wake up and face another day!

"Morning, folks! Looks like we’ve got some… news." he says, purposely avoiding attributing the words ‘good’ or ‘bad’ to what lay waiting on the map.

The old map, not dissimilar to the one your own group carried, had been altered heavily by the group who had lived and died here! Thick black lines form three circles on the map. Each circle had been crossed through with a great big red X too, the meaning of which you could surely imagine!

Beneath the circles, the group had guessed what they might find, should they go on a run. Mostly, the space is filled with thick, ragged question marks.

Martin stabs a heavy finger down onto the map!

Shayna wonders why Martin was going to shit right in the middle of him. Nasty man, she thinks, knowing that she maybe dodged a bullet keeping romance with him at arms length.

She keeps and eye out from the roof while the others search the place.

When she sees the map, her eyes immediately go to the school. "Maybe my sister was there. Maybe there is a list of survivors. I want to go there!"

Billie peers at the map as well, when Shayna comes down to take a look.

How far away are the Motorcade and the Crash Site, and are they all in different directions? Curious, are we going to use the 'Going on Runs' rules with sectors and such?

Owen sees the others gathering around the map and takes a look over their shoulders.

A Helicopter crash site ... he tries to remember when was the last time he heard a helicopter sound. It used to be a common thing to hear. Now it feels as rare as a blue moon.

"Does anyone remember hearing a helicopter flying in the area? How long ago was this crash, I wonder..." he asks the others.
OOC:
thinking that, in the post-apocalypse silence, something like a helicopter engine would have been noticed by him, or by others.

Scavenging…
As Owen and Vinh go about the stinking work of clearing up a space for sleeping, they come across a small, child-sized back pack shunted into the corner. It had once been pink, but now was stained dark red with dried blood. The unicorn stitched to the front of the bag got the worst of the gore, it seems like.

Zipping it open, the two men find a stash of candy bars and Haribo Gummy Bears!
Richard, in his efforts to take care of the stray dog, roots around some more, only to find a couple of bottles of water! One of the group here had hidden them away in their now-rotten bedroll. While they’d likely never be icy cold, they seemed sealed, and so surely clean to drink!

Owen scatters the candy bars and Gummy Bears packets he's found over the map.

"We had enough tricks for one day... How about some treats?..."
Oct 16, 2024 1:21 am
Richard's eyes practically glow, not so much at the water, but at the gummies. What a treat.

"You got that right. Small things like this are like ... like heaven really. Let's divvy up the loot, everyone! Try to drink the water slow and easy, savor every drop."

It was telling that he didn't for one moment think about the poor kid that had belonged to the backpack.
Oct 16, 2024 3:52 am
Shayna peers at the candy and of course Richard calls dibs on the Haribo sweets. Just my luck She grabs a Fifth Avenue candy bar which she doesn't remember being very good but a year with nearly no chocolate will improve the taste, she guesses.

"Remarkable. They must have succumbed quickly after getting those cars all setup nice in that line. Or they're the second group to make this a home. Doesn't speak well for it's security, that now does it darlings?"
Oct 16, 2024 6:40 am
Billie is still at the map as the others converse. She's trying to show Tracy how to read it as she replies to Shayna's comment. "Or maybe someone on the inside hid a bite," she says idly, noting on the map that they can hit the helo crash before they go to the refugee camp...

Selena Cabello
"The breakfast of champions!" Selena jokes, as she reaches a grubby hand into the pack of jellies, and fishes out a small handful. She throws them back into her mouth in one go, and takes her time chewing them up!

Eva Cabello
"Has… Has anyone checked those cars outside? Looks like we can’t take the boat to any of these places!" Eva says with a sigh.

Martin Cater
"She’s right! We can go south or west on the road… Walking, unless those cars are in working order. North to the crash site…" Martin says, with a hand on his hip and another on his chin.

Tracy Devlin
"Bet they’ve got some cool shit at that crash site! Military hardware! Bazookas and shit!" Tracy guesses, miming the use of an RPG in front of everyone else.

Emma Gauff
"It could have been a news helicopter!" Emma interjects, which elicits a disappointed eye roll from the young man as he drops his hands.

"But some guns would be nice!" she offers sheepishly, when she sees Tracy’s reaction.

Martin Cater
"Shayna wants to head to the school! We could split up!" Martin offers skeptically. He sucks air in between his teeth as he says it, suggesting he doesn’t think it’s the greatest idea.
