It’s hard to quite make out in the quickening gloom, but Owen does his best from a distance to try and piece a story together. Those fellas up in Fort Lamar had brought news of squabbles between units when it was a sure thing that everything had gone to shit. Maybe that had been what had happened here?

The foxholes, if that’s what they could be called, don’t seem uniform to Owen’s untrained eye! More explosive, than deliberately dug! Something heavy had pounded this place, leaving some holes that bit deeper and darker than others. Something had really given this place, and whoever was here, hell for a time.

The space between you and the helicopter is clear of walkers, you note, as Owen brings his binoculars up and inspects the twisted ruin of metal in the middle distance. It’s hard to guess at what brought it down. The young man sees what could be nicks and holes from arms fire, but it could be pure chance! The thing had flopped down hard on its belly, though the skeleton of it could provide a place to stay for a while! While not a comfortable nights sleep, it seems safe enough… Save for the body the young man spots trapped in one of the cockpit seats.

"Hey, there's a body in the cockpit," he says painting pointing and passing the binoculars around.

"I say we go and check. Could even be a walker who is trapped by seatbelts. Anyone with me? I'd rather not go alone... "

"Wait a sec. Let's see if we can make out any movement first." Richard strains his eyes on a fixed point inside the cockpit.

I'm not feeling strongly one way or the other, where we camp -- so whatever everyone decides. There *will* be watches, though...

Richard doesn’t spot much movement, but he’s been around long enough to know that walkers sometimes lay dormant without a food source or stimuli to grab their attention!

Many a nasty surprise has been waiting in a dark corner on what was supposed to be a quick run for a group of survivors…
OOC:
You could try making some noise, if you wanted to check! Risky! Maybe go up and give him a wave?

Richard is not convinced that the "pilot" is dead or that he isn't a walker. Rummaging around on the ground, if he can find a stone, he will fling it as close as he can to the where the "pilot" is located.

Shayna holds Richard's arm down lightly before she says her piece. "Maybe don't throw that. I'll go with Owen and get close without making much noise. When we are right on top of it, we'll poke it with a stick."

If he wants to throw the stone, she'll not stop him. She waits for his agreement.

"Yeah, yeah, alright. You two be careful, okay?" Richard stands up stoneless.

Billie-Faye nods as well, but she pulls out her pistol and seeks a stump or the like to brace it against in case she has to make a long-range shot.

"We'll cover you from here. Watch yourselves, like he says..."

Owen nods to Shayna and the others and starts heading slowly towards the helicopter with her. He casts a nervous glance at Billie and her gun.

They zigzag around the foxholes to approach the wreck. He readies his machete, blade ready to strike, but hoping he won't have to.

His eyes are on the figure in the seat, trying to catch the least motion.

Owen and Shayna creep forward, hoping that whatever caused these great holes came from above and not below! The last thing they needed was to be traversing a minefield at close of day.

Zigzagging through the foxholes, Shayna and Owen do notice the field littered with chunks of meat. Not very large pieces, and they had clearly been blown apart quite completely. However, every so often the duo come across a piece more recognizable than the rest: a scattering of fingers or a uniformed chunk of shoulder still decorated with the patch of whatever rank and unit the man had once belonged to.

Approaching the copter, you wince as a sudden moaning takes up. Muted through the broken glass somewhat, the moans come on and you watch as the downed pilot begins to thrash about in his seat! His belts hold him fast, though that does nothing to deter his grasping at you! You see no bites from this distance, and his head seems quite intact. Beneath the belts, you notice his ruined and bloodied torso, however!

finally, the dots join in Owen's mind. OH. SHIT.

He stops in his tracks. "Shayna... I think we are walking on a minefield..."
He considers their predicament, glances back at the group back at the treeline. "DOn't follow us, I think the holes were made by mines blowing up! There's bits of bodies everywhere!" he warns them.

When the moans become audible, he reaches for the binoculars at this shortened distance, and looks through it again to observe the thrashing strapped-in pilot.
Nov 11, 2024 3:12 pm
"Shit! Why did he stop?"

Richard Scrambles for his pistol and strains his eyes again to see what he can of the others and the surrounding area and chopper.

Cooper swears and jogs to the side of the rough ground after pocketing her gun. Crouching down, giving Kent a great view of the top half of her American Eagle tramp stamp, she looks hard for indications that mines were indeed planted, struggling in the fading sunlight.

Then, wondering if Richard needs to clean his ears out, she says, "Fuckin’ minefield, the kid just said! Goddamn it!"
OOC:
What’s here that looks like it needed protection? There’s no helipad or anything, right, the chopper crashed in a field? Are their structures / buildings nearby?
Nov 11, 2024 5:11 pm
Shayna has her spear. "I'll try and stab his head. I can reach farther than he can in those straps. Keep an eye out."

She'll move forward and try and jump and scramble through the holes, thinking those are already exploded.

Harrigan says:

Then, wondering if Richard needs to clean his ears out, she says, "Fuckin’ minefield, the kid just said! Goddamn it!"
"Alright, alright. Keep your shirt on."

Or maybe not.

"You must have great ears to hear them over there. Fuck, though. What do we do now?"
Nov 11, 2024 10:20 pm
"We wait," Billie-Faye says, still looking for the signs of any planted explosives. "And we cross our fingers. Be ready to run if they set somethin’ off, Richard. That’ll draw fuckin’ walkers from all over."

Then, glancing up from her crouch, the dirty blonde sees Shayna approaching the moving pilot with her spear. "Shit! That one is still kickin’…"
Nov 12, 2024 8:15 am
"Wait, I'll come too. In case things go south."
Owen follows Shayna using the same foxholes she hops in.

At the copter, he looks around the wreck for other walkers other than the thrashing pilot. His hand tightens the machete handle until his knuckles go white...

OOC:
Let’s get a Close Combat roll to dispatch this walker from Shayna.

1 stress is still on you from that horde! You also get 1 extra dice for Owen’s help!
OOC:
You can’t see any structures from where you are! That’s not to say for sure that there is or isn’t anything here!
Nov 12, 2024 5:17 pm
Shayna swears at herself, Stupid girl, this is stupid, then lunges the last three feet and stabs at the walker's head.

Rolls

STRENGTH, CloseCombat - (3D6, 2D6)

3D6 : (663) = 15

2D6 : (34) = 7

Stress - (1D6)

(4) = 4

Owen's help - (1D6)

(1) = 1
