[OOC GAMEPLAY] Chapter 0: Welcome to Emerald Team

Jul 25, 2024 7:39 pm
OOC:
Welcome to the first gameplay thread... sort of. The purpose of this thread is to resolve any actions or preparations you want to take before going into the dungeon. I'd like to resolve these quickly and mostly out-of-character so that we can get to the delving ASAP. The real roleplaying will start at the entrance to the dungeon, which will happen in a separate thread.

If your character doesn't want to do anything in town, then you can just drop on OOC note here to that effect.

Dungeon Master

You each have your own reasons for joining the competition. You may have travelled from near or far. But you all wrote your names on a scroll and then watched as the divine emissary, the black-robed Dungeon Master, burned those scrolls in their magic brazier. The next morning, you find that same scroll beside your bed. Beneath your name are new words in a different script.
Quote:
Emerald Team.
West Entrance.
Sunrise Tomorrow.

With the scroll was a ring - dull gray metal with a small, uncut emerald. It was by these rings that you identified your teammates. And it was by their uncut ruby rings that you identified your competition, the Ruby Team: three elves, two humans, and a goblin.

You have one day to get to know your party and prepare.
OOC:
Let me know what actions you'd like to take, if any, before starting the dungeon delve. If you want to provide some backstory or describe your character's actions in town, feel free. But I don't intend to do a lot of detailed roleplaying as DM here.

Melayne has coin to spend but can carry nothing more. He’ll buy a sack so as to be able to carry some loot if necessary. If folks are low on coin he could chip in to assist.

Here is some additional information - answers to questions asked in the OOC thread.
The town. We'll call it... Bruga's Hold.

You have all been in town for at least a few days, longer if you wish. The town is simultaneously nothing special and a great place for an adventurer to call home base. There is a market for almost all common goods. Good food and places to sleep. It's home to a wide variety of different species. The nation in which the town sits is relatively stable and not particularly oppressive. Bruga's Hold sits on the edge of a dangerous expanse where civilization collapsed and it has become a wild frontier. This town has always had its supply of adventurers.

The divine emmissary (aka the Dungeon Master) set up a sort of shrine/kiosk in town to "register" potential competitors. The rules were made available, though they are few. The primary rule is you cannot engage the other team in "direct conflict". The divine emissary has refused to provide additional clarification on this rule, but warns that violating the rule is cause for disqualification.

Teams are not technically required to return to town at night. However, the divine emissary says that the entrances to the Shadowdome will be open only from Sunrise to Sunset (7am to 7pm game time, for convenience). There is no rule that you can't stay inside the dome overnight, but you are given the impression that it will be impossible to get a safe night's rest if you do.

The major inn and tavern has become a gathering place for all the competition hopefulls, and you have come to recognize most of them, at least by sight. On the day you received your rings, you all quickly found each other at breakfast in the tavern. You sas the ruby team do likewise. After eating their food, the ruby team left the tavern quickly. By the way they were looking at you, it seemed they didn't want to talk to each other further where you could hear.

Kasin is in a similar situation to Melayne, also having more coin that capacity. Admittedly, he already has some leather armor, a magic staff, dagger, and kit he got a good deal on and is supposed to contain everything an aspiring crawler would require within a backpack. Unlike Melayne, Kasin is not buying anything, as he does not believe he'd be able to carry even a extra sack.

Melayne assesses the other teams with a hint of disdain, but does so quietly.
OOC:
When we return to town, I assume we’ll not be able to carouse or study, right? In other terms, time is of the essence in this competition?

If the gates are closed from 7pm until 7am, I would think that if we return to town we have 12 hours to do whatever we want.

Yes, but carousing takes longer, no? In any case, if you all go carousing, take Melayne along : he'll improve your chances of a better outcome considerably.

Eh. The low end of the chart is "A worthy night."

Sure, the two week debacle isn't feasible, but carousing isn't wholly off the table.

OOC:
I had been planning to allow carousing. I'm envisioning this game as kind of a compressed campaign of sorts, with the party gaining a level or three along the way. I may create a modified carousing table that is more applicable to a single-night of drinking. To balance things out, it seems like training in a skill ought to be available also. That doesn't make nearly as much sense, but I'm willing to come up with a magical explanation to make that downtime option available as well.

Thea is eager to head into the dungeon, there's not much she wants to do in town.

For the record, there's not much Kasin needs/wants to do right now either.

Ditto. After we put a day into the dungeon, we will probably all have stuff to do but as of now? Should be good.
