Axel Thomson
When Eudora floats back to her seat, Axel turns around in his seat to face you, "Hey, you're popular today." He says it like a compliment. He places a piece of Hubba Bubba cherry bubblegum on the corner of your desk.

I take the gum with a grateful smile and unwrap it before popping it in my mouth. "Getting jealous?" I ask. "Speaking of popular, are you coming to Cris's party on Friday?"

"Of course I'm jealous. I should be the belle of the ball, always. And yes, I'm Elena's plus one. Who's bringing you?" Axel taps the top of your desk playfully as he grins.

Kastor rolls his eyes at Axel's antics, opens his journal, and starts sketching.

"Whoa, hold on, you got Elena to take you to the party?" I ask, surprised. "That's great! I mean...right?"

I glance over at Kastor to find him sketching and the corner of my mouth lifts in a small smile. My quiet, leather-jacketed introvert.

Axel shrugs, "I dunno, maybe? I mean, yes, it's great that we're going. But I've been her DD for a few parties now." He throws on a smile, "Save me a dance, Jules?"
Aug 21, 2024 2:13 am
"Mm," I muse softly when he points out his DD status. Then he asks for a dance and I laugh. "Of course. I'd be happy to share a bit of my spotlight with you." I wink, teasing.

Ms. Calliope

Ms. Calliope
Axel grins before turning back to face front when Ms. Calliope clears her throat. "Alright, class. Listen up, please." She steps around her desk to stand in front of the class, her soft brown eyes drawing everyone in. "Today, we're going to begin a journey into narrative writing. Narrative writing is, essentially, story writing. It can be fiction or non-fiction. It can also exist somewhere between the two." She slowly walks to your left, her eyes moving over the class. "At the heart of great narrative writing is memorable characters. If the reader can't engage with the primary characters, the story will be lost, like sand through your fingers. So! I want everyone to work with two partners... and since we have three people in each row, that will work nicely."

She directs everyone to scoot their desks around, and you find that your partners are Axel and Jenny Kiely (Jenny the novel-writer who is totally into Will, of course). "I want one of you to be the scribe for your group, and the other two will be the speakers. Take the first half of the class and discuss the following..." She moves to the dry-erase board and starts writing as she explains the assignment. "Each of you will share a favorite character from a story. It can be a novel, a movie... even a comic book or a poem! You will discuss the inside and outside traits of that character, what makes them interesting and compelling, why you chose them as a favorite. I'll be at my desk if you have any questions." She sits down.

What do you do?
Aug 21, 2024 9:02 pm
I don't want to be the one stuck with doing all the work, so when I see Jenny's in our group, I quickly nominate her to be the scribe. I even flatter her a bit with, "Since you're the writer here," so she feels obligated to do it.

Calliope's direction about narrative writing even being something between fiction and non-fiction gets me thinking. Maybe this is the time to start to bring a little magic into the real world, to get mortals used to thinking about the gods again.

"I'm choosing Zeus," I say. "God of the sky, god of lightning."

I guess even though I'm not his Chosen, I still want to see him restored to his full former glory. ...maybe a little changed for the better.

Jenny looks up with surprise, "Really? Isn't he like... a skeezy guy?" She scribbles some notes on her Moleskin notebook.
Aug 22, 2024 2:42 pm
"On the outside, sometimes, sure," I answer with a casual tone. "But on the inside, there's a lot more going on. That's why I like him so much." I lean forward, getting sucked into this a little bit. "He also cares about his family and Olympus remaining strong. He wants his children to be happy. And, like everyone else, he wants to be seen and known."

"That's so cool," Axel says with interest. "Is this from a book? I'd like to read it."

Jenny dutifully notes your description.
Aug 22, 2024 4:08 pm
I'm glad Axel seems interested, but I wish I had a better answer for him than "personal experience." I don't know if the world is quite ready for that yet. But who knows? Maybe they are.

"I'll have to see if I can find it again," I tell him instead, dodging. "But it's woven into all the stories - the good ones anyway - if you're paying attention. The softer stuff always gets warped by people with their own agendas and opinions. Zeus has really been unfairly represented on the surface, you know?"

"Okay... what's his character archetype? ‍His Enneagram? What is the Lie he Believes?" She looks up. "It's a writer thing. Everyone consciously or subconsciously tells themselves various "stories" about people and the world every day. The stories are shaped by past experiences. And the narrative Zeus tells himself has to be false."
Aug 23, 2024 2:18 am
Jenny shoots more questions at me than I can handle, but I try to play ball. If I can speak her language, maybe I can get her interested too. "Oh, um. I guess the lie he believes is that...that the only way to protect the place and people he loves is to keep them at arm's length. You know, to make sure they see him as all-powerful and in control at all times. To sometimes draw hard lines just to make sure they know he can. He doesn't know how to be powerful and soft at the same time. He doesn't know how to show his love gently while maintaining his position on the throne, and he feels like he has to choose between those two things." I study her face, then invite her in too with, "What kind of character does that sound like to you?"

You can tell she's drawn in by the lie and your description of Zeus' heart. She nods slowly as you talk, then quickly scribbles down notes, "Wicked." When you ask for her input on Zeus' character she sucks in her cheeks as she mulls it over, then smacks her lips. "It sounds like his hamartia - that's the Greek term for a tragic flaw - is compelling. His inflexible approach means the love he feels for his family is never returned. I... can see why you find him interesting." She jots down some notes. "Would make for a cool short story."

Will
That's when you hear Will's voice from the farthest row. "Yeah, My, heh, primary character... is a real tralk. You know, a super cock gobbler. She'll do it with anyone. Anytime. Anyplace. She's done trains, man. And she'll go down on whoever asks. Her name?" He glances over at you and smirks. "Let's call her Juliet. Like in the Shakespeare play or whatever. But like, everyone is her Romeo, you know?" He laughs loudly, while Skylar shakes his head like he can't believe Will is pulling this kind of dren.

Eudora giggles when Will laughs. "Will! That's so mean." She pauses to start scribbling notes - because of course, they made her be the scribe. "What do you, uhm, like about her? This character?" She glances over at you when she asks the question.

"I don't. I don't like anything about that skag," Will replies sharply. Again, he glances over at you, then back to Eudora. "It's just a character. People like reading about zarking tralks. Whole websites dedicated to it."
