I frown, about to argue with Galinthias that we should just find a way to do magic lessons while I’m in class here. Two birds, one stone. But the text distracts me. The fact that Annabelle says she works FOR Riley - no, for MISTER Riley McCabe - is so bizarre. And I’m sure that she calls it a "dinner date" doesn’t mean a "date" in the high school sense of things.

I consider her questions and how to respond then text back:
Hi Annabelle. Thanks for coordinating. I’m free tomorrow or Wednesday night. No allergies. I was raised in Honolulu so a taste of home is always welcome, but that’s basically impossible around here, so I’m always up for some yummy spicy food too.
Oct 13, 2024 8:14 pm
Annabelle's number comes through with another text:
Honolulu? Oh, I love Hawai'i! I was stationed there for a few years in the Navy. I cook a mean Huli Huli Chicken*! Would you be interested in coming to Mr. McCabe's place for the meal? I could send Carter - Mr. McCabe's driver - to pick you up tomorrow at five.

If you'd rather eat at a restaurant - which I completely understand - I'll make reservations at Kobi Q. It's the best Korean BBQ in the city. Carter can also pick you up at five tomorrow for Kobi Q.

Which would you prefer, Ms. Parezzi?
OOC:
* - A staple of Hawaiian barbecues, huli huli chicken is marinated in a sweet and tangy sauce, then cooked on a rotating spit, allowing the meat to baste in its own juices. The term "huli" means to turn over, and during cooking, the chicken is flipped multiple times. This results in a succulent, flavorful bird with crispy skin.

So...Mr. Riley McCabe's "personal assistant" was in the Navy? Iiiiinteresting.

I file away the detail as another bit of information on the mystery of Riley and focus more on my good luck to get an invite to his house. So many more clues waiting there, I'm sure. Part of me wonders if Riley knew that's what he was signing up for when he offered dinner, but I'm not about to give him the opportunity to back out by asking. Annabelle offered and if she gets to be the voice of Riley, I'll take it.

Huli Huli chicken sounds amazing! Do you need my address?
Oct 13, 2024 10:59 pm
Annabelle texts back:
I do. Carter will be there at 5 PM sharp in a black Escalade.
Oct 14, 2024 1:29 am
I start typing in the address for home - with Dad - but then I hesitate. If Galinthias is right and Riley does have some sort of dark cloud around him, maybe I don't want him or his "people" coming too close to Dad. I delete what I'd started and put in the address for Knox's apartment building instead.

I'll be ready

Then after a moment's more thought, I add:
Is there a dress code for this event?

I feel silly asking...but I also realize that this isn't likely going to be just a casual night over at a peer's house.
Oct 14, 2024 1:50 am
Annabelle responds after a moment:
Dress nice, but don't stress about it. If you send me your measurements, I can have Carter bring you an outfit, too.
Oct 14, 2024 3:38 am
Wow, these people really aren’t messing around. Once more, I’m reminded of Zeke and how he offered me a whole closet of what was once Annika’s clothes at his house.

Tempted as I am to take Annabelle up on the offer, I don’t want to make it seem like I’m desperate or taking TOO much of an advantage of the situation.

I have something in mind. Thanks.

Annabelle sends back a confirmation just before the bell rings, bringing an end to Stats class. It's lunch time!

What do you do?
Oct 14, 2024 7:32 pm
I'm both eager for and dreading lunch. Eager to see if the chatter about Teddy has died down - not to mention the chatter of me crying in class earlier - and dreading that both are still somehow buzzing around the school. But still, I'm hungry and not chicken enough to skip completely. I head toward the cafeteria, hoping to find a friendly face like Axel or Belle to eat with.
Oct 14, 2024 10:17 pm

The cafeteria air hits you with a wall of smells - greasy pizza, canned green beans, and chicken nuggets that somehow look soggy and burnt at the same time. Today’s Italian-inspired lunch is spaghetti drowning in watery red sauce with a brittle breadstick that snaps in half just by looking at it. There’s a hard brownie, too - probably more dangerous than the dodgeballs in gym class. You grab a carton of chocolate milk and try not to think about Chloe Schmidt’s rant about the food. For once, she wasn’t wrong.

With your tray in hand, you pause, taking in the chaotic rhythm of the lunchroom. Everyone has fallen into their usual groups, some deep in conversation, others pretending they don't care if they have anyone to sit with. You feel the familiar tension - choosing where to sit can say a lot more than you’d like.

---

Riley McCabe catches your eye first, stationed in the corner. His phone is propped against his juice carton, and he barely pays attention to Skylar Pascoe, who’s leaning in too close, grinning like he’s trying to charm his way into Riley’s good graces. You overhear bits of their conversation - Skylar's going on about some exclusive club in Kansas City, probably hoping Riley’s connections can get him in. Riley looks mildly bored, but he’s letting Skylar talk.

---

At a nearby table, Axel Thomson is chatting with the speed and enthusiasm of a caffeine addict. He’s explaining his latest science project to Theodore Brown, who shifts nervously in his seat, overwhelmed but still trying to keep up. Cooper Nelson is there too, throwing in sarcastic remarks that somehow make Theodore laugh. It’s light, friendly, the kind of energy that’s easy to fall into.

---

Across the room, Belle Noria sits alone. Her spaghetti is untouched, and she picks at her breadstick like it’s something far away. She glances toward the exit every few minutes, as if she’s already planning her escape. You know that look - you saw it earlier by the dumpster. Her phone rests face-down on the table, a deliberate shield. No one bothers her, and she doesn’t bother with anyone.

---

In the corner by the windows, Pen Dominguez is scribbling in her journal, fully absorbed in whatever world she’s creating today. She catches your eye for a moment and gives you a small, understanding nod. There’s no pressure in it, just an invitation - if you want to sit in silence, she wouldn’t mind.

---

At another table, Hannah and Melony are sitting close, heads tilted toward each other, their voices low. Hannah looks frustrated, her brow furrowed in that specific way that makes you think it’s something to do with Menoetius - her betrothed. Melony listens like an all-knowing queen, giving advice with the smooth confidence of someone who doesn’t really care what happens, as long as it doesn’t affect her.

---

Henry Cooper, Oliver Green, and your new nemesis - Teddy Strauss are swapping stories about last week’s game, their voices loud and filled with that easy, athletic camaraderie. Oliver throws his head back in a cocky laugh, but when Teddy spots you standing by the door, his grin falters for just a second. It’s subtle, but it’s enough. The tension between you lingers - unfinished, unresolved. He has a big frelling bandage on his face.

---

Over at the far end of the room, Steph sits with Eudora, the girl who feels more like a force of nature than a classmate. Steph mutters something about the latest underworld drama, her voice low and conspiratorial. Eudora listens with the calm of the ocean at night, unbothered by the chaos of the lunchroom. They look like they belong to a different world entirely.

---

You stand there for a moment longer, your tray feeling heavier by the second. Before you can make up your mind, Axel spots you and waves, grinning like he’s genuinely happy to see you. "Jules! Over here! Sit with us!" His voice is bright and infectious. He pats the seat next to him, eager to pull you into their conversation.

Then you glance back at Pen by the windows, and she lifts her pen for just a second, a quiet gesture that says, If you want to be here, that’s okay too.

Two invitations. Two very different energies. The question is: Where do you want to be?
Oct 15, 2024 2:28 am
It's at least nice to know that I have options, but standing around for too long is just asking for trouble. You have to be decisive in the cafeteria, or you're a target.

Part of me wants to go sit with Belle, so she's not all alone, but maybe alone and escape is exactly what she wants right now. She probably doesn't want any of the attention I might draw shifted to her by proxy. In the end, my momentary indecision means I just react to the first vocalized invitation and I head over to Axel's table with a smile, taking the seat beside him.

"Are the breadsticks even worth trying today, or should I skip it altogether?"

Axel

Axel
He lights up like you just asked him the most exciting question in the world. "Oh, man, definitely skip it. I tried one earlier, and it tasted like... I dunno... cardboard that’s been dunked in dishwater?" He shudders dramatically, as if the memory is still haunting him. "Do yourself a favor and save your taste buds."

Theodore Brown looks up nervously when you sit down, like he wasn’t expecting you to actually join them. His face flushes as he fumbles with his fork, and he offers a quiet, stammered, "H-hey, Jules." You notice him glancing at Axel, probably for reassurance, but Axel just grins, oblivious.

Cooper
Cooper Nelson, on the other hand, greets you with a playful smirk. "Well, look who decided to grace us with her presence." He gives you a once-over, his eyes twinkling mischievously. "Senior queen herself, sittin' at the kiddie table. What’d we do to deserve the honor?"
Oct 15, 2024 5:49 pm
I grimace at Axel's description of the "breadstick" and move it to the edge of my tray with two fingers like it's diseased. "Thanks for the warning."

I pick up my fork and mix up my noodles and sauce a bit, mostly trying to resurrect a few errant tomatoes from their watery graves among the noodles. I look up when Theodore greets me, wondering if his hesitance is because he hates me or...likes me? Maybe he's just intimidated. He should be. But before I can say anything to him, Cooper jumps in and that seems more fun anyway. I straighten my back and lift my chin imperiously.

"I..." I start dramatically, "am a noble queen. Happy to spend time among all of my subjects, so long as they remain loyal and faithful to me." I relax with a short laugh. "Really, how could I deny an invite from Axel? He's clearly got you two enthralled over here."

"So enthralled! I'm like the duke!" Axel agrees happily. He shifts gears to a more serious expression as he asks in a low tone, "Are you okay, bee tee dubs? I heard you and Teddy had a face-off.... then you tore his face off?"
Oct 16, 2024 1:06 am
I grow more serious when Axel does, my mouth tightening a bit. "Yeah, something like that. I'm fine." I push out a short breathy laugh. "It really is a case of 'you should see the other guy,' right?" I look at the other two at the table to see their reactions to this whole stupid thing.

"Queen! Kick zok and take names! I love it!" Cooper says in a playfully celebratory tone. "I hate that jock zokhole. But like, aren't you worried about his whole team or whatever?"

Theodore laughs nervously, then looks down at his tray to move some food around. He's nervous around you, specifically, Jules. Maybe he's scared of you?
Oct 16, 2024 8:40 pm
I give Cooper a smile. "Psh, I'm not worried about the whole team. Bring it on, I've dealt with scarier things than them." It's true - I have. I've walked through Tartarus, faced angry gods, battled giants. What's a stupid football team going to do really?

My gaze shifts over to Theodore. Maybe he just needs some reassurance? "Don't worry," I tell him. "I won't hold it against you just because you and Teddy share a name. Theodores have been some of my best friends." Theo. Ted. My original boys. My heart aches with a twinge of bittersweet longing at the memories.
