Cris
Cris reads your entries and grins his quiet approval and nods. He notices Mr. Cooper is looking your way, so he goes back to writing down some ideas.

After a few more minutes, Mr. Cooper divides the class into small groups. You are placed with the following students:
* Lilli Lederhausen
* Henry Cooper
* Isis Underwood

Lilli
As the discussion begins, Lilli kicks things off with a dramatic flourish, pulling her outline close. "Okay, so, I just went all out on ‘gender roles’ and ‘fashion stereotypes,’" she says with a grin. "I drew a big ‘tutu’ on one side and then some serious ‘power suit’ action on the other. Gender's like this costume, right? We all put it on, but what does it even mean?" She shrugs, trying to mask the earnestness in her voice with a quick laugh. "I mean, do girls have to like pink? Do guys have to look ‘tough’? I just don’t get why we box ourselves in like that."

Henry

Henry
Henry, sitting across from her, fidgets with his outline, glancing over at you with a small, nervous smile. "I, um… I wrote down things I’d noticed growing up. Like, how people assume you’re supposed to ‘man up’ or never cry if you’re a guy," he says, glancing at his paper. "And I put a section for ‘strength,’ but…that’s more than physical. My mom taught me to be strong by, you know, taking care of things - showing up for people, being dependable." His voice is quiet but sincere.

Isis
Isis, composed as ever, gestures to her outline with a small nod. "I used a mix of traditional roles and some personal experiences. Like, I grew up with a sense that women should be elegant, reserved - and men, well… they should be the ‘providers.’" She pauses, choosing her words carefully. "But I think it’s… different now. Society’s changing, and while I still respect those values, I added ‘ambition’ and ‘independence’ to both sides. To me, it’s about staying poised and showing strength, no matter what." She gives a small, confident smile, making clear that she values tradition but isn’t bound by it.

I wish I'd been put into a group with Cris, and I spend the first bit of discussion time stealing glances over at him. But the group seems to actually be taking this discussion seriously, so I try to pull my attention back. When I'm the last one to go, I shrug, smirking almost guilty.

"I mostly wrote down physical things, you know, literal body parts. I know not everybody fits into a box," I say, glancing at Lilli to acknowledge her point. "But I guess I see it like less of a constraint to fit into and more like a...way to set expectations. You might say someone has masculine energy, and it's helpful to know what we mean by that without getting all bent out of shape about it. Or if you're signing up to get physical with someone, it's only fair to know what to expect going into it. So I guess I don't see it like a box. More like...advertisement or something. A way to let people know about you."

Isis
Isis tilts her head, intrigued but thoughtful. "I get that," she says slowly, her voice measured. "Setting expectations is important, sure. Especially in relationships, so people know where they stand or what you’re bringing. But I guess…" She pauses, choosing her words. "Sometimes, people lean on that ‘advertisement’ too much and never get to know the person beneath. There’s this whole part of us that doesn’t get seen because we’re put in that…role."

Henry
Henry’s eyes stay on his paper, but he nods at your explanation. "Yeah, maybe you’re right. Sometimes, we make assumptions based on, you know, how people look or what they say about themselves. But when you’re someone like me…" He hesitates, then goes on. "Sometimes the world expects things of you you’re just not. So, yeah, maybe it can be helpful, but only if we, like…leave room for flexibility, you know?" He gives you a quiet smile, as if grateful for the chance to talk about it.

Lilli
Lilli, for once, looks almost serious, her usual humor softened. "Hmm," she says, tapping her chin. "I think you’ve got a point. Like, if I said I was looking for a best friend with ‘big dork energy’," she gives a wink and nudges your shoulder, "I’d probably be advertising for someone like me. But that’s only one side, right? There’s so much else that we hide behind those labels."

Isis
Isis traces a line down her outline. "It’s funny," she says. "Growing up, my parents were always telling me to be ‘a lady’ - whatever that meant - and there was this huge pressure to look and act a certain way. But I look around now, and I see so many definitions of what a ‘lady’ or a ‘gentleman’ can be. And it’s… liberating, I guess. But sometimes, it’s still hard to shake those expectations."

Henry

Henry
Henry nods, leaning forward as he speaks. "I get that. My mom always had high expectations for me, too. ‘Be respectful, be tough, don’t let people push you around.’ And that’s all fine, but then you’re thrown out into the world, and it’s like…" He gestures at the room, as if trying to capture all the complexities he’s still sorting through. "It’s like you’re supposed to know exactly who you are, but you’re still just figuring it out. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever get to that point."

Lilli
Lilli catches your eye with a wry smile. "I guess this assignment hit a little deeper than expected, huh?" She laughs softly, then sighs. "I came into this thinking we were just gonna talk about skirts versus jeans or something. But I like this better. Makes you feel…real, you know?"
Nov 3, 2024 7:22 pm
The way Lilli nudges my shoulder after teasing about looking for a best friend makes me wonder if it's less of a tease and maybe she actually is feeling a little friendless, maybe she is trying to advertise herself here, in her own way, to show off what she's bringing to the table.

I nod at Isis and Henry's words, then laugh with Lilli when she points out how serious this has gotten. It feels a little weird, getting into something like this in class, but she's right that it feels real too.

"I guess it's better when people can choose how they want to set the world's expectations for them, instead of having those expectations come from outside pressure."

Isis
Isis smiles, nodding in agreement. "Exactly," she says. "It’s like… having that agency, that freedom to define yourself, makes all the difference. I think everyone deserves that. We’ve just been so conditioned to see ourselves through everyone else’s eyes - it’s refreshing to imagine we don’t have to."

Lilli
Lilli chimes in, grinning as she crosses her arms. "You know, it’s kinda revolutionary, what you said. We spend all this time trying to fit into these molds, but who says those molds aren’t, like, totally outdated? Let’s make our own rules, right?" She glances around the group, her expression challenging and full of a new confidence.

Mr. Cooper announces, "You've got three minutes, folks. Let's start wrapping things up."

When Lilli brings up how things have changed - are changing - I can’t help but feel a bit of a glow. My mantle settles on our conversation like a golden halo, at least that’s how it feels. I bask in it, sitting back a bit with a satisfied smile, content to simply listen as the others extol the freedom of change.

The four of you talk for the last few minutes before the bell rings and it feels warm and unguarded, like chats with Soph sometimes feel. You changed their minds - changed their lives, Jules. You feel a trickle of power from them pull into you (you may remove a Condition of your choosing).

I didn't expect this class to be anything but boring, and maybe a little annoying. Getting this surge of positivity from it is totally unexpected, and it makes me feel like I can hold my chin a little higher as I head out of class toward the hall. Whatever's waiting for me, I'm more than what people think of me - I can set my own expectations, break whatever rules I want, and I can change anyone's mind.

You step into the crowded hallway, and the usual mix of chatter and shuffling sneakers fills the air. Clusters of students are gathered at lockers, some sharing hurried bits of gossip, others laughing at some meme someone’s showing off. The smell of Axe body spray and faint, lingering cafeteria food mingles around you, grounding you in a chaotic rhythm. A couple of juniors sprint by, trying to make it to their next class before the bell; one nearly barrels into you, mumbling a quick, breathless apology as he zigzags ahead.

When you reach Food and Nutrition, the vibe feels entirely different - almost serene, like you’re stepping into a calmer current. Mrs. Korsgren, with her floral apron tied around her waist, is already setting up a demonstration table, and a few students are clustered around her, eager to see what’s on today’s agenda. The rest of the class filters in slowly, chatting softly, a noticeable shift down from the energy of the hallway.

There’s a mellow sense of anticipation here, almost as if everyone’s looking forward to the practical escape this class brings. Food and Nutrition has a way of giving people a break from all the usual high school noise, a class where it’s okay to focus on mixing and measuring, chopping and tasting. A few students pull on their aprons, and you catch a couple of friends in the corner whispering excitedly about trying a new recipe at home. It’s relaxed, a little like stepping into a home kitchen where everyone’s just here to unwind.
