Northlands Saga 0: Spears in the Ice

Viðar couldn’t bear it. Hard is it for a true warrior to win a spear-maiden for another. Aye, to spend one night with her and not to think what should have been his ever after. It ate at him like a worm in the guts, all those nights Olaf retreated with Hrist into her tent. And Viðar thought he even saw some change in the Warrior of Wotan, in the day. It was something in her face, as if she misthought herself, as if she sensed that something about her man was not part of the one who had won her that first night, and thus she wondered just why she continued to give herself to him.

So in time Viðar approached her, told her all, and told her, moreover—or so the hirðmen say—that he claimed nothing of her now; he only wanted her to be undeceived of his treachery and the trick that two men had unfairly played on her.

Astrid contemplates Olaf’s daughters, whose arms are full of flowers, as they near completion of their tasks in the field. This lasts until a cloud briefly dims the noonday sun.

A trick, by the way, which some say was a potion from a Sagæstreland witch bargaining for her life, or from a ring stolen from a lost caliph, or from a sacrifice to Loptr, made by the two of them, the blood of a cat and of a hen, the hen in the act of laying an egg.

Astrid pierces Ulfarr with a lingering glance.

Tell me, old friend. What do you suppose Hrist said to Viðar, when he told her all this? What would you have said, were you in the place of Wotan’s chooser of the slain?
Feb 19, 2025 8:02 am
The weight of it all has Ulfarr wincing. Even were this father not one of these two honorless men...

It is small wonder Viðar never told his son. But more surprising is that he let the boy wonder into the gleaming fangs of Silvermeade, where he was certain to hear these truths. And as forthcoming as Astrid is with the story -- and with different versions of it, Ulf is left with more questions than answers. Certainly he does not know the right thing to say when the young woman stops and presses him with her own uncomfortable question.

"I don't know the ways of the Warriors of Wotan," he begins slowly. "But I know this was a grave thing my father and Olaf did. A treacherous thing."

He wants to ask if she ended herself to punish them, but the words will not form on his tongue. Instead, he says, "She must have been a fury. Did she... challenge Olaf to combat?"
Feb 19, 2025 3:59 pm
Astrid smiles, as if she is pleased with Ulfarr's answer.

Not so dramatic as all that. We Warriors have a reputation to uphold, a tendency to cold rather than to heat. Nay, she left them both, but the way the skalds would have it--and these tales are never sung in Olafshall, of course--is that Hrist left heartbroken, for she favored your father as the better man. In fact, it is probable that Viðar was moved to confess precisely because sparks sprang between them.

Again Astrid's gaze meditates on the glade.

Olaf never forgave your father for it. He blamed Viðar both for the loss of his wife and for his shame. He judged it as a betrayal, which I suppose it was, though, being men, they had not considered the treachery they were conducting against Hrist. Anyway, you know the rest of it, Ulfarr. Olaf made it known that he never would see Viðar again on penalty of death, whereas Viðar made Olaf promise, in return, that Olaf would keep a place of honor for Viðarson in service in Silvermeade Hall. And so it has been done.
OOC:
And then...
Quote:
The faint snap of a breaking branch in the tree line catches your attention. Looking in that direction, you can just make out the dark forms of two burly men, well armed and armored, crouching in the shadows of the brush. They hold between them something large and heavy, a shield-sized stone plate with carvings on it. A rather tattered and dirty woman is standing behind them, muttering to herself and waving her arms above the stone tablet.
OOC:
And to anticipate any questions, here is more direction from the adventure text itself (seriously, this has been great fun, an experiment, running an actual published "adventure," according to its "rules"):
* Anyone that spots the figures can begin a combat with a free surprise round
* The group is 80 feet away and has cover and concealment due to the trees
Feb 20, 2025 6:10 am
Ulfarr is still processing everything Astrid has told him, but few things stir the man to action and clarity of thought faster than seeing armed men and what might well be a witch within a long axe-throw of the sisters he has been charged to protect.

"Girls!" he barks as he pulls a javelin from the trio he carries on his back. "Get back! To the other side of the glade!"

Stalking forward, moving dangerously and taking aim at one of the two men, he adds, "Astrid! Do you know them?!"
OOC:
Moving to close the distance, hoping to get an answer from Astrid before hurling a javelin -- or not!

OOC:
Fun! Fun! Fun! Also, this could get crazy.

We are using S&W Complete Revised. I suggest that we use, for a base upon which to form our rulings, Initiative and Order of Battle on page 35. From there we get wibbly, recognizing that this adventure was written for Pathfinder 1e, (inexpertly) converted to S&W Complete, and now being run with S&W Complete Revised. The Revised rules have changed Movement Rates, and that threatens to drastically change what I expect were the intentions in this scenario. But I don't care!

I assume Ulfarr is unencumbered. Hence his base movement rate is 12. Outdoors, that means you can go 120 yards in your Movement Phase! That means you can zip up there and attack someone at will during this "surprise round. Wow! I bet Ken Spencer didn't expect that!

That seems to be the optimal choice, because, with Cover, a thrown weapon, though easily within range (because of outdoor measures) will receive... to make it interesting I will say -1 vs one of the men and -2 to the witch, since she is just behind them and partially covered not only by the brush but by the men, for the attack roll.
What is it you see?, calls Astrid behind Ulfarr. Then, in the same breath: Oh! And it becomes clear to Ulfarr that Astrid now has spied the burly men. But they are too much in shadow for Astrid to distinguish, just as they are for Ulfarr.
OOC:
So are you throwing a javelin, or do you want to rush upon the group? And, if you're attacking, which of the three figures will be your specific target?
Feb 21, 2025 7:03 am
OOC:
I better double-check my inventory if we’re doing things by the book. Looks like I just hammered things down, and I don’t remember doing an encumbrance calc.

120 yards?!

Are these one minute combat rounds?
Feb 22, 2025 5:49 pm
OOC:
Ha ha! These are one minute combat rounds.

Now definitely is the time to discuss!

About encumbrance. You almost certainly won’t have an encumbrance penalty (but I’ll look over your sheet, too). In S&W, weight carried is weapons and armor + 10 lbs. in a reasonable amount of gear. Getting coins (XP) out of a dungeon is what encumbers a character!

Hey! It’s gamist, not realistic. Just like one minute combat rounds. 😜
Feb 23, 2025 11:42 pm
OOC:
Nothing crazy in his inventory, but he -does- have a lot of weapons.
[ +- ] Possessions
One minute combat rounds. One of the core things that drove me from AD&D. :)

I will give this some thought -- might indeed rush the group, perhaps just to disrupt whatever they are doing. Will post tonight.
Feb 24, 2025 2:01 am
OOC:
Alright, he's indeed going to charge into the brush and try to interrupt the ceremony or ritual or whatever it is. Can he draw axe and shield and charge all the way over, shield-bashing one of the men?
Feb 26, 2025 4:40 pm
Harrigan says:
OOC:
Can he draw axe and shield and charge all the way over, shield-bashing one of the men?
OOC:
Is your only goal to shield bash one of the men? If so, yes, certainly. I'd rule that as an attack roll. Success is you'd do 1d4 damage (the equivalent of a club). Even if you don't succeed, the person would be knocked down.

But I see you also drawing your ax. Is that in preparation for next round? Alternatively, I'd let you bash one character and strike at another with your free arm, your ax. The ax attack would be at -2 and the shield-bashed target would be knocked down but take no damage.

This is a free surprise round. If it weren't, I'd negate the +1 AC for the shield for using it in this way.
Feb 26, 2025 9:05 pm
OOC:
Ax (sic) is drawn only to be threatening. Real intent here is to charge in and disrupt what they are doing by slamming one of the two men with my shield.
"They perform some dark rite!" the man says harshly but lowly, knowing he cannot wait for Astrid’s answer, as there are too many shadows and leaves betwixt them! So drawing his skeggøx and hefting his rönd, Ulfarr breaks into a run — straight for the trio, straight through the brush. He means to foil their ceremony, and slam one of the men to the ground while doing it!

Rolls

Shield Bash To-Hit - (1d20+2)

(17) + 2 = 19

Potential Damage (+1 if STR applies) - (1d4)

(4) = 4

Feb 27, 2025 3:54 pm
[ooc]+2 to hit? Well, you get +1 for your Strength, because you're a Fighter. But Fighters don't get +1 to hit for their level until level 3. What, do you think we're playing Pathfinder here? 😉

Also, at 15, your Strength isn't high enough for a damage modifier./ooc]

With a satisfying crunch, which Ulfarr hopes is his opponent's bones and not his own shield, the man holding one end of the stone plate tumbles into the foliage, and the implement falls where his hold slips.

Astrid is right beside Ulfarr, spearing at the figure on the other side of the item, because its girth functions as a shield, providing cover to the witch on its far side.

Rolls

Astrid spear attack (I don't know why I have longsword listed in her stats--maybe that's optimal) - (1d20)

(17) = 17

Spear damage - (1d6)

(4) = 4

Feb 27, 2025 3:59 pm
Ulfarr grins as he hears a shriek from Astrid's foe.

The heavy stone object falls from between the two men, into the underbrush.

Both men, one tumbled onto his back, the other backing away from Astrid's spear, reach for their own weapons. Ulfarr's foe is armed with a battleax, but he currently is lying on it. Astrid's foe fumbles at a short sword strapped to his side.

Between them, on the other side of the fallen stone plate, the witch mutters and raises her arms. In her wrinkled face, her eyes blaze with malevolence.

Rolls

Initiative roll for next round - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Feb 27, 2025 5:18 pm
OOC:
Hm. I actually know that about Fighters in S&W, but I must have gotten turned around -somewhere- on it, as… well, look at my weapons…
[ +- ] Erm…
Looks to me like I need to adjust all those numbers down. Will do so shortly.

Also rolling for Initiative. Are you using phases / an optional system, or what? If we’re doing declarations and phases, Ulf intends to strike the man on the ground in front of him if he’s not already incapacitated.

Also, what’s your ruling on what it takes, in the middle of combat, to draw or switch weapons?
Last edited February 27, 2025 5:27 pm

Rolls

Initiative - (1d6)

(5) = 5

Feb 28, 2025 4:50 pm
OOC:
Looks like your side has won the initiative!

What this means is that you go first, in each phase of combat, before the other side does. I'm using this system:
Quote:
Check for Surprise.
Roll Initiative.
Prepared (memorized) Spells.
Declare (memorized or known) Spells.
Movement and Missile 1.
Melee and Declared/Prepared 2 Spells and Missile 2 (for ROF 3)
Missile 2 (for ROF 2) and 3 (for ROF 3)
Quote:
Surprised characters have a 1 in 4 chance to drop objects in hands. Even if surprised, Monks and Rangers do not drop items.
Moreover, Fighters have the additional benefit over other classes:
Quote:
Fighter. Whenever there is damage left over after reducing a target to 0 hp, the Fighter may automatically apply this remainder to nearby targets in range (as long as the initial attack roll hits that additional or any other character’s AC, as well).
And, incidentally, Astrid is an NPC, so she may not qualify, but Paladin PCs have this additional benefit:
Quote:
Paladin. Paladins with Cha of 13+ add +1 to damage vs Chaotic and "evil" creatures. Paladins can Turn Undead as a Cleric one level lower than their actual, current Paladin level.
There is no need to declare actions (unlike in VsD) except for what you're doing in each phase of the round. But, for expediency's sake, we might as well express our intentions before each round as a general overview. I've already indicated that my NPCs are going for their weapons and the witch seems to be chanting a spell of some kind.

Generally, drawing/changing a weapon should occur in the Movement phase. If you start doubling and tripling movements, we can make an in-moment ruling, which usually is a -1/-2 to any relevant rolls for what I call Combining Actions.

And, if you are going to strike the man on the ground, I will give you +1 to hit that target.

And, if your bearded ax is a two-handed weapon, it delivers +1 damage on a successful hit.
Feb 28, 2025 11:58 pm
OOC:
You’ve, uh… clearly thought about this!
Ulfarr should target the witch — he should take the woman down before she finishes her chant. But he is green still, and only sees the man in front of him, on the ground, reaching for steel.

Stepping forward, hefting his axe, he means to finish him!
OOC:
Melee attack with the one-handed axe, so I think other actions happen first…
Mar 1, 2025 3:48 pm
OOC:
Remember, all of this is negotiable. Since you asked, I'm simply defaulting to what I call my Preferred Way to Play. I'll link you its contents in Discord. It's, in my view, a perfected form of old school resolutions based on my years-long home game before Covid.
The unkempt man below Ulfarr scrambles and rolls in the underbrush, trying to get to his feet while also avoiding Ulfarr's bearded ax. At this time, Ulfarr also notices that the man has a single javelin within a ketch at his hip.

Ulfarr hears, behind him, Astrid's keening war cry as she thrusts with her spear.
OOC:
Go ahead and roll your attack. +2 to hit (+1 Strength, +1 to your target's condition). I'll go ahead and roll my NPC's counterstrike, now, as he gains his feet and swings his ax. If you kill this guy, of course, this counterattack is void.

Rolls

Ax counterattack!

Damage!

Does the javelin fall out? - (1d6)

(4) = 4

Mar 1, 2025 5:22 pm
"What foul ritual is this, trespasser?!" Ulf shouts at the man as he strikes at him.
OOC:
I'm cool with what you've presented so far -- and it sounds like it's been playtested! I've read the doc, but will probably need to be reminded of various things.

Edit: Oho! If perchance that takes the guy out and Ulf can make it to the witch, he'll try to brain her with the flat of his axe. (Wants her alive.)

If she's too far away and Astrid's foe is still up, chop him down next.

Rolls

Axe Blow - (1d20+1+1)

(15) + 2 = 17

Axe Damage - (1d8)

(7) = 7

Mar 1, 2025 10:43 pm
If Ulfarr’s shield bash probably bruised or cracked some of his opponent’s bones, his ax swing is certain. Blood gouts, staining his hand and smattering on his shield.

But—by Wotan!—the man still lives, rolling onto his feet from his knees and sending an ineffectual ax-swing that Ulfarr sidesteps with ease.

Rolls

Astrid spear

Astrid damage - (1d6)

(4) = 4

Astrid’s foe’s short sword

Short sword damage - (1d6)

(3) = 3

Mar 1, 2025 10:46 pm
Ulfarr hears behind him a man’s strangled cry followed closely by a sound—something between a grunt and a whimper--that he never heard from Astrid in his earlier youth.

And then…
Quote:
[The witch] has just completed [her spell], and even if she is damaged, the spell still activates in the next round. It is possible that a lucky shot might kill one of the ambushers, though if the characters did not detect the start of the attack (or once the spell takes effect one round into the combat) the following things happen as a result of the tablet’s spell.

First, Inga stumbles over to one of the characters and collapses. A few moments later, Fastvi falls out of a tree, unconscious. Bogi the dog turns to bark at the trees, but falls over sideways to the ground. Runa starts walking toward the edge of the meadow, her eyes wide and vacant ...

These are the last things the characters see before darkness shrouds their eyes, and they fall into a deep, enchanted slumber. Once the characters
fall asleep from its effects, they remain asleep for 2d4 hours and cannot be woken by any means but a dispel magic.
OOC:
Pretty awesome, huh? What fun! 😏

Also, after that little combat, I have some things to share/discuss regarding "classed" NPCs. I think I have to depart from my usual practice in something regarding this campaign.
