The copper-skinned man blinks his golden eyes, burning with sweat, as his brain threatens to split in half with the terrible knowledge of demonkind he sifts through.

Varmock. A wicked god with dark tastes. He was almost pedestrian in his lust for wanton evil. To know this and to hear the demon speak of requiring a life, it was the closest to normalcy that Mahluk had experienced in some time now."I must succeed, no matter the cost. I must. And so I vow that the life is yours, though the blade be mine. For this, you must be bound to me until you have completed one task of my choosing. Wait in the shadows, for the time may be nigh."
It was a vow not made in good conscience, for Mahluk was already scheming the ways to betray the demon. After all, it was he who summoned and controlled, not the other way around! The Red Desert suffered no fools. He would outwit this demon after making his escape. But first, the escape.

A low, resonant thud echoes through the vaults, the unmistakable beat of a distant wardrum. The gaolers nearby, if there are any, pause abruptly, their heads tilting in eerie unison as though listening to some unheard command. The drumbeat comes again, louder this time, a slow, steady rhythm that pulses through the stone walls like a heartbeat. It repeats, gaining strength with each strike, until it's clear that this signal is spreading through the Vaults. Whatever message it carries, it feels heavy with desperation and foreboding. Something ominous is about to unfold.

Are the footsteps still stopped? Are they approaching once again? My original plan was to use the demon to slay the gaoler.
